(1) Song of the year?

I live under a rock and never listen to recent music because my tastes, like most people, largely calcified in adolescence. So! My criteria for this is going to be "song that is new to me as of 2024" and is in the "most played" list on my phone, which makes it.... a specific remix of Close by NESZLO & Matt Rysen (song originally by 3LAU, whose tunes I adore) that has less than a thousand hits on youtube. The original song I almost really, really liked but it fucking CHOKED on what should have been the climax of the song and this guy fucking fixed that. warning: this is dubstep. and my usual dubious taste in music.

(18) a memorable meal this year?

back in our old apartment, there was a very, very fancy steakhouse within walking distance. (the sort of place where one expects to spend $100 a head on the meal) well, one month they ran a special on the weekends to get new customers that was a dinner for 2 for $100, so for a treat for beau's birthday, it and i and dressed up all fancy and walked over. it was, unfortunately, indeed the best filet mignon either of us have had in our lives. hate it when expensive things ARE actually better. everything was fucking delicious. also beau got drunker than it has ever been in its life because we ALSO managed to arrive in time for happy hour, and after it had gotten its FIRST cosmo off the happy hour menu, its only intended drink because it is a LIGHTWEIGHT and takes responsible drinking VERY seriously, a group of middle aged women came in and got a looooot of cosmos, but apparently one of them changed her mind on it, and our extremely cool, very professional waiter gave it to beau for free because he was extremely pissed about the idea of wasting alcohol. 2 drink beau was perfectly fine in public but not to be repeated. and we added the cost of the drink to cool waiter's tip, bc he was a super cool dude.

(22) favorite place you visited this year?

oh, we went to lots of fun places this year because we knew we were going to be moving, so we went full on tourist in the city we'd spent the past three years living in. but i have to say my favorite was pittsburgh's PNC park for a pirates vs dodgers game. it was my first time being to a MLB game, and while i'm not terribly into sports, I do enjoy baseball from time to time, and my dad is from the LA area so im passingly familiar with all their teams because he's a big fan of them all. beau and i both had a fantastic time, even though the dodgers lost. it was a magical experience. super fun. it's one of the nicest baseball parks in america and i have to say they earned that accolade. they put on a great show and it was really cool place.

What if the plant body hadn't worked out, and the Holy Mausoleum solution had actually taken a long time to sort of "fix" Shen Qingqiu's body and fully call his soul back to it, so that hundreds of years passed and civilization in PIDW/SV world progressed to the point of something like the "modern era"?

Imagine Luo Binghe trying to delicately introduce his shizun to such strange concepts as smart phones and credit cards, while Shen Qingqiu is just desperately trying to figure out how dumb he should play this. Would it be believable for him to get everything on the first try? There have to be some differences between what he knows and this world's versions, right, because of the demons and cultivators and things? Right?? But it's not like any of this actually IS difficult for him to grasp!

Small(or not) what if scene 👀 What if Mushroom Boy didn't have the ability to hypnotize people, but just read their minds???

Like an AU where his powers are different? I'll indulge since the scenario does seem interesting! 🍄

If Mychael didn't have hypnosis but instead read minds under cut:

Mychael's hypnosis is pretty much his main go-to for survival. As a pacifist (or at least he tries to be) the fastest way to de-escalate a hostile situation is throwing a hypnosis blanket over the threat and make them docile/non-aggressive. If it has a mind he can manipulate why go about it any other way? And keep in mind it's a one-way street. He can feed thoughts into your head but the only way he knows it's working is you reacting externally like with your words and actions.

But suppose he can't manipulate minds but only read them? I think it would shift his entire personality. Knowing people's true intent and what they think of him would change his survival behavior. Instead of placating the threat directly and just force people to accept his presence (albeit under mind control), he'd have to adapt on the spot more often.

He'd have to say and act in whatever way that would earn others' trust enough so they won't hurt him, or just turn and run if he feels like they're out for his blood. He'd be more manipulative, less open and honest, and wear several more masks than he already does now. He'd never give away that he knows what you're thinking at any time, since that's basically his only tool to survive so he wouldn't give up that information easily.

And I imagine after hearing "WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT" over and over and over every single time he meets someone new, he'd just accept nobody wants him at all. So would he even begin to yearn for company? Absolutely not.
