To Return To Your Demise

You poor little puppet.

You were subject to a cruel fate—born a blank slate, with no conviction or will instilled in you that roars like the mighty thunder you hail from. Born a blank slate, like the light and airy silks your creator draped over you, just as a mother would swaddle an infant. The naivety that you possess renders you vulnerable to the world’s cruel teeth that will devour you whole. It is almost pitiful, and my heart aches for the one you cannot attain.

From the lightning that looms so ominously, its piercing strike shall call upon rain to shower. Rain that will splatter violently upon the fabrics you hold so close to your chest as though it is all that remains of a purpose you are waiting for, rain that will force you to trudge upon puddles of earth that stain your precious garments. Your clothes—the pinnacle of your innocence and delusions—shall be tainted and brought to ruin like the battered land of the place you once deemed your home. Not to mention, the winds that will mercilessly tear at you, just as sharp and swiftly as the forged blades you once so proudly brandished before your masters. You will hide underneath that shoddy house with that child you believe so faithfully to be of your kin, when you know very well, that you both must part. From the ashes of a house that leaves no heart behind, you will walk on that path of freezing snow that bares its bitter fangs at your feet. And it will be very, very cold.

But that won’t matter to you, would it? You little doll, who clings so madly onto your own imagination you projected onto reality as the blatant truth, couldn’t care less. You willingly venture into dark caverns and tunnels with no end in sight, stubbornly believing in pessimistic introspections and lies you have fed yourself with, because nobody else In this world could have been bothered to feed you with a wooden spoon themselves.

It was your life’s wish and mission to return to your original state of being. The very one that inevitably surrendered you to the ruthlessness of this life. The one where, you are not plagued by the curses of worldly filth. A time so long ago now almost forgotten, where you had yet to be defiled by the sins of others. So, now that you may be granted this wish through the power of Irminsul, does it make you happy? Are you at peace, knowing that you will return to your endless slumber once more? To be undisturbed, without any trace of emotion. To be erased and at stasis, just as the eternity that she yearns for?

No more tears, sorrow, hatred, and helplessness. To be free from being controlled at last by yourself and others.

To never have had an ounce of humanity at all…

Is that indeed what you yearn for, wanderer?

Chapter 15: The Epilogue

That's it, Folks! I'm a little sad to ending it, but all good things come to an end. I can't stress enough how much I appreciate the support you guys have given the story! Thank you :D

“Want some hot chocolate, Izu?” Papa asks. 

‘Yes, please. I think dad wants some too.” He motions to his dad who's been fiddling with an Ikea chair for the last two hours. They watch him try to fit together two pieces that obviously don’t fit. His shoulders slump in defeat. His hair, which he pulled back into a loose ponytail, has already come (mostly) loose.

“Good call,” he tells Izuku, reaching over to ruffle his hair. He straightens and calls into the living room. “Honey?”

“Yes!?” 

“Come take a break with Izu and me.”

“I’m almost done,” he calls back. 

Papa snorts, adding whip cream to the top of their mugs. “Well, when you’re done fighting furniture, we have hot chocolate.”

His dad seems to consider this, putting the pieces off to the side. “....With whip cream?”

Izuku jumps up and down. “Yep!”

“Well, okay, then I have to take a break.”

He joins them in the kitchen. A tiny space that fits the rest of their apartment. It really only fits the three of them (and Uncle Sanshirou or Hikage when they come to visit). But it’s theirs and it’s home.

A picture frame painted in red and decorated with the words in blue glitter glue is, “Captain Hero is the best” sits on a side table. In the glass frame, dusty from years of just sitting around, is a photo of a group of people. Notably, a green-haired, preschool-aged boy, a young man with curtain of white hair and green eyes, and a man with red eyes and red, spiky hair. There are others there as well, but none that All for One can place. He sort of recognizes the little boy, close to his son’s age, with choppy hair and a nervous deposition (that would later become the only One for All user that would go unnoticed by him, but he digresses). 

He would need to take this picture and its frame. His son made it, and he doesn’t have many photos of his family.

There isn’t much else in this abandoned apartment building. It’s amazing it held up this long. Still, he isn’t in a rush to leave this place. 

If he is silent, he can remember his son’s tiny, contagious giggles. His little feet pitter-pattered across the carpet in an effort to ‘scare’ him. All for One wonders if his son did that with Yoichi and his menace of a boyfriend. 

He hopes not. 

All for One makes one last sweep of the apartment, taking anything of note (a teddy bear here and a wedding and graduation photo there), before calling his warp gate. 

Some people say it’s better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all. 

The portal opens, and as he steps inside, never to return to this place again, all he can think is:

I’d rather have never loved in the first place, because if I hadn’t, maybe I’d never know a loss like this. 

The portal closes, leaving the apartment abandoned once again.

Final Bug Fact:

The world NEEDS bugs. They keep the soil healthy, pollinate, control pests, and contribute to the worlds' ecosystem. By the end of the century, it is estimated 40% of insect species may go extinct due to habitat loss. Yes, that is very scary. But with even one beetle spared, one caterpillar rescued, and one Hollow Knight comic of all things, things will change. Because I know there's a lot more Dewi's out there than most people realize. Stay curious.

Comic Thoughts and Pictures Below!

I wanted to put here how amazing and sweet everyone has been with this comic. I finished a 75 page comic in 3 MONTHS. I am at a loss for words. That sounds crazy and it IS crazy. But man was it fun. Even on days were I wasn't able to draw due to fatigue or business, I loved working on it from start to finish. And guess what!? This is my first ever FINISHED comic :D I'm so proud of myself. I know there's some things I want to change and the art is wonky in most places...... but I'm content to let it be. What an amazing summer adventure!

I'm hoping to post the full comic on another Comic website. I may or may not edit some of the art ^w^ So I'll let y'all know when I release it.

Interested in learning what you could do to help your local insects? This is the basic stuff. Maybe make some Insect Hotels if you have the time!!! And never forget to spread the word about bugs. They need our help just as any animal on earth.
