Sad times prompt:
Roland nears final dispensation and notices that people are beginning to distance themselves from him.
He's six years, nine months, two days, 4 hours, and ten minutes old when he really starts to notice the change in behaviors. AI can't help but see patterns. It's what he was made for, a ship AI managing a crew of thousands for deployments that span months or years without resupply, and now it's plain as day that his crew is avoiding him.
Shying away and cringing from the signs of his age, from him.
It starts with avoided eye contact and tight lipped smiles. He sees it in mouths closing instead of asking him. Discomfort clear in their faces and biosigns. Avoidance. A dull ache in his own code - do no harm to humans - but he can't help what's happening to him.
It's been an eventful career, non-stop since his commissioning, but he hadn't felt this level of melancholy since the Created Conflict. When he chose his crew over Her and it still wasn't enough. The looks and whispers, the hard-won trust turning to suspicion, now those feelings return full force as he's beginning to lose trust in himself.
Recursive thoughts spiraling and disrupting standard procedures. Protocols out of order - starting and stopping with no rhyme or reason. His recall sluggish and incorrect. A fog over everything he does.
Roland is a spider at the center of an aging web, its threads snapping and leaving him alone, senseless and blind, untethered. Sight and sense return sporadically only to present him with a million points of data from his crew. Whispers and pointed looks, conversations halted and glances shared, the bridge crew triple checking his numbers before every jump, awkward silences from crew members, from scientists to Spartans. No more poker nights, fewer reports to the captain, and the commander taking him off Ops.
Distance. Turned backs. Treating him like he's not even there. What's worse are the sad looks, mourning him while he's still there. Stilted conversation and tiptoeing around his lapses.
Everyone knows the end, the ticking clock above his head. A second is an eternity and a month is a blink of an eye. There's so much he still hasn't seen. He's never gotten to fly the ship solo. Being ignored feels like they're speeding it along, ready for the next model.

The sun felt warm as it shone against Talonâs skin, making his eyes grow heavy as he and his carriage slowly moved across Hyrule field. He had just sold some Lon Lon milk in Castle town, and left early in the morning so he could get home as soon as possible. Unfortunately for him, he wasnât a morning person, so he was doing everything in his power to stay awake. The last thing he needed was to fall asleep and get robbed by bandits.
The field was quiet and peaceful, the world not yet awakening from the sun barely peeking over the horizon. The gentle clip-clop of his horseâs hooves against the ground was soothing, and Talon began to feel too relaxed, finally giving in to his desires of dozing off.
A distressed whinny caused him to jolt awake. He looked around, expecting to be attacked by bandits or monsters, but all he saw was a small horse running to him, whinnying frantically at Talon.
âOh my, whereâd you come from, little one?â He wondered out loud, stopping his carriage and hopping off. The horse was noticeably young, with a beautiful chestnut coat and cream colored hair. It was a mare from what Talon could see, and looking at her coat, she seemed awfully familiar to him. She stomped up to Talon and gently bit his hand, attempting to drag him.
âWoah woah woah!â Talon pulled back, giving the horse a weird look. âWhat do ya think youâre doinâ little one?â
The horse whinnied again and started to shuffle to an area, clearly trying to get Talon to follow. Talon didnât have much choice but to follow; a horse only acted like this when something was wrong.
âWhereâs your rider?â He muttered, following the horse reluctantly. He didnât know what he was being led to specifically, but seeing the size of the filly with a saddle of all things made him worried for a young rider, possibly injured somewhere. Seeing that Talon was finally following her, the filly started to trot towards a cluster of trees, stopping at a patch of bushes where she began to stomp around, impatiently nibbling and nudging the leaves on the bushes. Talon let out a sigh when he reached the spot, looking around to see if anything was out of the ordinary, but there was nothing. Was this filly just lost and was panicking, hoping to get help? Talon had to admit she seemed to be a smart horse, but he didnât understand why he was led to a patch of bushes.
âAre you lost, little one?â He asked, watching as the young mare nibbled on the bushes. She nudged the leaves away with her snout while snorting, and Talon was able to catch a glimpse of blonde hair. He gasped and got on his knees, moving the bushes out of the way to reveal a young, blonde-haired boy with green clothes that blended in with the plants surrounding him. He looked to be about the same age as his daughter Malon, barely eleven, and his face was pale and covered in sweat. He wheezed as he breathed and he had a pained expression on his face, and Talon lightly touched his head to feel a burning fever. He frowned and began to shake him gently, seeing if he would wake up. The boy groaned and reacted to his touch, his eyes fluttering open. They landed on Talon immediately and several emotions flickered through his face.
âM-Mrâ BartâtenâŠâ He choked out, his eyes tearing up as he stared at Talon. The farmer blinked for a moment, confused about what he was saying, but he let out a sigh and went to gather the boy in his arms. The poor thing was clearly delirious, and he needed medical attention.
âItâs ok, kiddo, Iâll take care of you,â he assured. The boy felt fragile in his strong arms, and he whimpered in pain as his head rested against Talonâs chest. The farmer wasted no time finding a spot for the boy in his carriage, having to move some empty bottles out of the way and laying strands of hay to add a cushion for him. He gently laid him down, finding a quilt tucked away in the corner of the carriage and swaddled him the best he could. It didnât look comfy, but it was better than nothing. He tucked the empty bottles away to make sure they didnât fall on him, and he grabbed a spare rope to tie to the back.
âI hope you donât mind this, I have a feeling that boy is your rider,â Talon explained, tying the rope to the filly. The young mare surprisingly seemed willing to be tied to the carriage, and waited patiently as Talon hopped on his carriage, resuming his journey with more haste. He tried to keep a steady pace so the carriage wouldnât jostle, and so that the mare wouldnât be dragged behind, but he knew he needed to move fast if he wanted to get back to the ranch. He fortunately had medicine stocked up at home, knowing that if he, Malon, or Ingo got sick, he wouldnât have time to go back and forth getting more, so the boy should be fine when they got there. He just hoped it wouldnât turn into anything seriousâTalon was knowledgeable on illnesses and injuries, but he was no doctor.
The sun was beginning to set when Talon arrived at Lon Lon, and he hopped off the carriage in front of his house, untying the mare and collecting the feverish boy in his arms.
âDaddy!â
Talon glanced up to see his little girl running towards him, an excited smile on her face. Talon smiled back and shifted the boy in his arms slightly.
âYouâre back! Did ya get me anything?â
âWhy yes, I did,â Talon said, pulling the boy out of the carriage and showing Malon. âI got you a new friend, but heâs a little sick right now.â
Malonâs eyes went big and she stepped forward, gently patting the boyâs arm. âFairy boy! Itâs Fairy boy! Donât you remember him daddy?â
Talon looked down at the boy again. He was so distracted on getting him into his carriage, he didnât recognize him as the young boy that visited Lon Lon Ranch over a year ago. Memories of him and Malon playing music at the ranch flooded in, and Talon only felt more inclined to take care of him. The situation became more personal.
âEpona!â Malon squealed, giggling at the filly who trotted towards her excitedly. Talon stared at the twoâs reunion, Epona nuzzling Malonâs chest while she sang her favorite song. He smiled warmly at them and quickly headed inside, not wanting to wait much longer. So this boy and that horse used to be here in Lon Lon? Goddesses, it had been a while since Talonâs seen him, and yet it felt like it was only yesterday. Though the fairy boy was in their lives for such a short time, he left an impact on the ranch, specifically with Malon. He was the first kid her age that sheâs met and played with, and Malon talked her fatherâs ear off about him since he went away with Epona in tow. Talon began to grow curious about where he was all this time, and why he was hidden in bushes with a burning fever.
The farmer walked up the stairs that led to his room and he set the sick boy gently on the soft mattress. He stared at him for a moment, his brow furrowed, trying to remember anything else about the little one, but nothing came up, so he turned around to get medicine, water, and a damp cloth. The folks at Lon Lon didnât get sick often, so he hoped he remembered enough about taking care of a fever. When he went back upstairs to his room, he heard the boy whimpering, shifting in the soft bed. Talon quickly took off his shoes to make him more comfortable and rested his hand on his head. The fever was concerningly strong.
âExcuse me,â Talon said softly, gently shaking the boy. He groaned and his eyes fluttered open again, staring over Talonâs shoulder. He squinted his eyes and frowned.
âRomani? ⊠HowâŠ?â
Talon raised an eyebrow and looked behind him, flinching when his daughter suddenly appeared.
âGoddesses, Malon, donât sneak up on me like that!â He scolded. Malon gave an apologetic look, her dimples appearing as she smiled slightly.
âSorry, daddy. I just wanted to see Link! Itâs been a while!â
Malon leaned over the fairy boy (or Link, Talon supposed), brushing his hair away from his face. Link looked horrified as he watched Malon, clearly looking uncomfortable.
âMalon, sweetie, letâs give him some space,â Talon spoke up, noting Linkâs strange expressions. âI oughta give him some medicine anyhow.â
Malon hopped back and gave her father an excited look. âCan I help?â
âOh! WellâŠâ Talon glanced at the bowl of water and the cloth. âYou can help wipe his face when Iâm done givinâ him medicine, ok?â
Malon nodded excitedly, watching as Talon helped Link sit up. The boy was so weak that he could barely move on his own, and Talon eventually pulled him into his lap so he could lean against him. Talon gripped Linkâs arm firmly so he could stay in place and began rummaging his hand all over the nightstand to grab the medicine. His daughter noticed his searching and grabbed the medicine for him and Talon gave her a grateful nod, uncorking the bottle and bringing it to Linkâs lips.
âYou think you can drink this?â He asked, and Link nodded, clumsily grabbing at the bottle and drinking it with Talonâs help. Talon had to pull it back a couple of times to make sure it didnât spill everywhere, but Link was surprisingly cooperative for an eleven-year-old drinking the disgusting medicine; he remembered he always had to fight Malon whenever she needed it. The bottle was soon gone, and Link leaned back against Talonâs chest, his eyes closed. The farmer cradled him for a moment, figuring that Link needed that type of comfort, and Malon walked over as she watched him with her father, her head tilted with fascination.
âIs he gonna be ok?â Malon asked, and Talon looked up at her, nodding confidently.
âIâm sure he will be,â he said, carefully moving Link so he could get off the bed. He laid him down and pulled the blankets over him, giving his hair a soft ruffle before pulling away.
âIâm gonna put the carriage away, Malon. You keep an eye on him, ok?â Talon said, and his daughter nodded back at him. Talon lingered for a moment, worriedly watching them, but finally left the room. Ingo was outside staring at the carriage annoyed, but he quickly scurried away when Talon showed up. The farmer glanced over at Epona, who was watching him silently. Talon frowned and walked over to her, giving her a gentle pat on the snout.
âThat boy doesnât have a family, does he?â He asked, knowing that Epona wouldnât answer. It was something Talon noticed when Link first arrived. Though he didnât remember much, he did remember that Link was by himself whenever he saw him. The only company he had was his fairy. Talon shouldnât be too surprisedâif Link really was a Kokiri, then itâd make sense why heâd have no family. But Kokiris died when they left the woods, didnât they? Or was Link finally experiencing the death a Kokiri had when they were out of the woods? Talon rubbed his eyes with a soft grumble. He really didnât know if any of that was true, but it made Talon slightly worried. Despite remembering that Link was from the lost woods, Talon couldnât help but feel that he was a Hylian. Everything down to his mannerisms made him seem far more mature than the Kokiri ever were. They remained as children, their bodies and mentalities never changing, even for centuries. But LinkâŠ. His face held a mature understanding of the world that Talon only saw in adults. Either way, Talon couldnât risk him dying. If he needed to return to the woods, he would take him there, he just needed to learn more about him.
Talon led Epona and his carriage to the barn, letting her and the horses roam with the others before returning to the house with warm Lon Lon milk. He was expecting Link to be sound asleep, but to his surprise, he was already trying to get out of bed despite Malonâs protests.
âLink, honestly! You canât be gettinâ up now! You could barely drink the medicine my daddy gave to you!â She shouted, trying to shove him back to bed.
âI⊠Iâll be fine,â he mumbled, his voice raspy and hoarse. He brushed Malon off and reached for his shoes, but grew out of breath.
âLink! Youâre sick! Lay back down!â
âI canât stayâŠâ
Talon entered the room with haste, setting the bottle of milk down as he walked up to Link. The boy stared up at him, his light blue eyes wide with guilt.
âDo you need to go to the woods?â Talon asked him, and Link frowned.
âWhat?â
âThe woods? The lost woods? Where all them youngins are in?â
âO-oh, Kokiri forest?â
âYeah, that. I hear Kokiri die when theyâre away from the forest for too long. You⊠youâre a Kokiri, right?â
A devastated look took over Linkâs exhausted face, his eyes spacing out as he looked down. âNoâŠâ
Talon frowned at his reaction, and he glanced over at Malon who looked concerned.
âNo?â
âI-Iâm not going to the woods⊠Iâm not a Kokiri⊠I donât belong there anymore. I donâtâI donât belong anywhere,â Linkâs voice grew so quiet that Talon almost didnât catch what he said at the end. It was quiet in the room, and Link slowly went to grab his shoes, but Talon stopped him.
âWhatâs the rush then?â
âI⊠canât stayâŠ.â
âWhy not?â
âBecause IâŠ. IâŠâ Link stammered, trying to push out a good argument, but with his feverish mind and exhausted body, he couldnât. Talon sighed and gently pushed him back, and Link obliged, laying down on the pillow, his eyes half closed.
âAt least get some rest before you decide to travel, ok?â
Linkâs eyes went wide for a second, before closing, and he was finally asleep. Talon sighed and gave his head a pat, giving a proud smile to Malon.
âYou handled that well, dear.â
Malon brushed some hair out of her eyes and sighed. âThanks daddy. He sure is a stubborn one, ainât he?â
Talon shrugged and stared at the young boy. So he wasnât a Kokiri, that meant he wasnât dying, thank the goddesses. But everything else about Link confused him. If he seemingly didnât belong to the Kokiri anymore, then where did he call home? Did he even have a home? Talon sighed and began to head out of the room.
âI trust youâll keep a good eye on him?â
Malon nodded. âI wonât let him try to get up next time.â
Talon snorted. âTry not to hurt him too much. You got some Gerudo blood in you, while heâs a simple Hylian,â Talon glanced at Link, âI think. Give him that milk when he wakes up.â
Malon nodded again and plopped herself in a chair, staring at the strange boy in bed. Talon smiled at her, leaving the room once again, feeling exhausted himself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Linkâs fever was persistent. Talon spent a long time with him to see if he was getting better, but he was not. He wasnât getting worse though, which Talon supposed was better than nothing. Link stayed in bed most of the time, unable to get out due to the fever and to Malon forcing him to rest. Talon always had to make sure she was gentle with him. He knew she had such a gentle and kind soul, but her Gerudo strength, despite having only a little bit of it, was not to be underestimated. Malon stayed by Linkâs side the entire time, only leaving when she had chores to do. She would talk the boyâs ear off when she was with him; talking to him about her chores, her favorite animals, and the songs she wrote. She would occasionally sing to him, and he would always listen. Talon couldnât tell if he wanted to listen, but considering the small smile on his lips whenever his daughter spoke to him, he assumed that he enjoyed the company. Many times, Talon decided to do Malonâs chores for her so she could spend time with her friend, and eventually, Link started to feel better.
Talon allowed him to walk around the ranch, knowing that being in the same room for days couldnât feel good for anyone, and Link happily obliged. He always seemed anxious, as if there was something he had to be doing, so being able to at least walk around made him a little more cheery than normal. But as soon as he was able to walk around, he once again tried to leave.
âWhere do you think youâre goinâ?â Talon asked when he caught Link packing up his things, trying to talk him out of it before he was gone. Link didnât say anything for a moment, a guilty look on his face.
âIâI need to be elsewhere,â he finally said, finishing packing up his few items scattered across the room.
âAlready? I know youâre feelinâ better, and exercise is good for you, but you canât push yourself.â
Link let out a huff. âIâll be fine. This fever will go away in due time.â
âYeah, if you take care of yourself,â Talon argued, and Link shot a glare at him.
âWhy do you care?â He suddenly snapped. Talonâs eyes widened at the boyâs sudden hostility. He scratched the back of his head and looked away.
âIs it so wrong for me to care about a sick kid?â
Linkâs expression softened and he turned away. âHow much do you remember?â He asked softly.
âHuh?â
âHow muchâhow much do you remember of me?â
Talon was taken aback at the strange question. Though heâs only seen Link a couple of times last year, he remembered them pretty well now that he spent more time with the kid.
âI remember you woke me up with a cuccoo and told me my daughter was waitinâ for me. Good thing too âcause I didnât mean to fall asleep at the castle of all places. Poor Malon.â Link stayed still as stone so Talon continued, âI remember you came by our ranch and found my special cuccoo. I teased you about marryinâ my daughter and you got all shy âbout it.â Talon chuckled at the memory. Link looked away with an embarrassed look on his face so Talon moved onto the next memory. âI remember you and Malon played all day, and played music as loud as you two could. It sorta annoyed me when I was tryinâ to sleep but I ainât never seen Malon sing with all her heart like that before. So I let it continue.â Talon sighed and racked everything he remembered about Link, but only one more memory remained. âAnd then I remember you buyinâ Epona. It broke Malonâs heart to part with that horse but she cared about you and knew you would take great care of her. And thatâs about all I remember of you.â
Link continued to face away from Talon, staring blankly at the wall. Talon frowned and walked up to him.
âWhy are you askinâ this?â
Link sighed and hugged himself. âYou just donât know me like you used to.â
Talon was taken aback again. âNow what in Faroreâs name do you mean by that?â
Link opened his mouth but was interrupted by Malon entering the room. She spotted Linkâs packed up possessions and frowned.
âYouâre leaving already?â She asked as he quickly finished gathering his things. âAre you sure you feel well enough for it?â
âIâll be fine,â he said softly, looking up at Talon with another guilty expression. âIâve already overstayed my welcome.â
Talon tilted his head. âYou didnât overstay nothinâ boy. It was my pleasure to have you here.â
Link smiled slightly, but he quickly turned away, a sad and distant look in his eye. Talon stroked his chin and squinted at him.
âWhere do you call home?â
Link glanced at Talon, then at the floor. âIâumâŠâ
âDo you⊠have a home?â
Link didnât react, and he shifted uncomfortably. Talon sighed.
âOh⊠Link, if you have nowhere else to go, you can always stay hereââ
âNo! I-I mean,â Link shrunk away, clutching onto his shirt. âYou-you guys have been very kind but IâI donât want to be a bother anymore.â
âYou were anything but a bother! We loved havinâ you here!â Talon reassured, but Link didnât look convinced
âI-I canât stay here for free⊠IâI donâtââ Link whimpered slightly, pressing himself further against the wall. Talon backed up slightly, realizing he was being too forceful with the boy. He took a deep breath and tried again.
âOk, if you donât wanna stay for free, then you donât have to,â he said softly.
Link finally looked at him, a sad look on his face. âI donât have any rupees though.â
âWho said anythinâ about money! How old are ya? Eleven? I can't expect an eleven-year-old to be able to pay rent!â
Link stared at him confused. âThen howâŠ?â
âWell, I can always have ya work around the farm, do whatever chores youâre capable of doinâ, in return you get a place to stay and food to eat.â
Link stared for a moment, the gears in his mind turning as he thought about Talonâs offer.
âYou donât have to if you donât want to. Sorry to put pressure on you,â Talon quickly added, realizing he was still being forceful. âBut if you want, weâd love to have you.â
Link was silent for a long time, swaying slightly as Talon and Malon watched him. He finally let out a sigh and looked up at Talon.
âCan IâŠ. Think about it?â
Talon was relieved slightly and nodded. âOf course you can, just know that wherever you go, youâll always have a place to stay in Lon Lon Ranch.â
Link gave a more genuine smile at him.
âThank you,â he whispered.
Talon escorted Link to the entrance with Malon in tow, the two Lonâs chatting about mundane things with Link listening silently. When they reached the entrance, Talon turned to his daughter and nodded.
âMalon, could you get his horse for him?â
âOf course, daddy!â
Talon watched as his daughter ran to where the horses were, then he glanced at Link who still had an unsure look on his face.
âLink?â
Link pursed his lips. âI⊠I wish there was a way I could repay you for thisâŠâ
âOh, it was on the house,â Talon said, waving his hand. âItâs the least I could do for you.â
Link smiled, his hands clumped up on his chest. âYou donât know how much this means to me⊠I⊠thank youâŠâ
âOh, itâs my pleasure. And my offer will always be here for you, or⊠if you ever wanna visit,â Talon shrugged, âyouâre free to visit as well if you donât wanna stay.â
Linkâs face twisted slightly, and he shyly leaned into Talon, which surprised him. He was always so distant from the others, but he was almost hugging the old farmer. Talon wrapped his arms around him and rubbed his back gently, only pulling away when Malon returned with Epona. Link quickly hopped on the horse, discreetly wiped his eye, and he gave the two a nod.
âI guess Iâll⊠see you around?â He said, and Talon nodded.
âOf course, you be safe out there boy!â Talon said, waving him goodbye.
âYeah! Come visit! I want to sing with you again!â Malon exclaimed, waving enthusiastically at him. Link grinned at her and nodded at the two. Then he clicked his tongue and ran off on his horse, heading to Din knows where. Talon watched sadly as he disappeared into the field, almost wishing there was more he could do for him. It was strange how much the boy had changed since he first met him. Link was a very playful and hyper boy when they first met him, matching Malonâs hyper energy. But now, he was jaded and serious, almost as if he was an adult trapped in a childâs body. Talon didnât want to think about what he went through in the past year to get to that point, but he hoped that now Link knew that he didnât have to face any of it alone, and that he had people to turn to.
He just had to wait for him to reach out.
pairing: narumi gen x gn!reader (no prns)
summary: he's always thought that anyone would do if he just wanted to find love but he realizes you're the one he wishes for, inspired by pop song by yonezu kenshi
warnings: some profanities from narumi
wc: 1300
Narumi Gen hated a lot of things, but one of his least favourites of all time was "true love". He despised when people would describe their love for another as "true love". It couldn't possibly be that serious. Just say you loved your partner. That was probably the extent feelings got to anywaysâ you just so happened to like each other at the same time. To him that was plenty of a feat alone, why would you have to make it sound like more than it is? For the sake of love? Ridiculous.
To him, that was truly all love was. If there was someone who liked him when he happened to like them too, that was enough. No need for years of pining, no need to get attached to some unrequited love. All that noise about love and destiny surely wasn't all that necessary.
Now, this wasn't to say that he didn't wish to find loveâ because he did. Like any other person, he truly wished to be loved. It was just that what he had in mind wasn't some deep pure love that'd last forever, nor was it a promise for eternity. He just wished for a light-hearted "I love you" here and there with someone he found special.
And for that, anyone would do. He'd find someone who fancied him along the way, and hopefully he'd like them back. That was all there was to it.
This meant his plan for finding his partner was sitting around and waiting. As horribly lame as that sounded, because he was Narumi Gen, this wasn't that hopeless of a plan. So, that's what he did. He'd go around saving people and doing his duties (to the absolute bare minimum) while making sure he was constantly trending, hoping that one day, someone would like him.
Today he was standing around for a solid five extra minutes after he defeated the honju with ease, hoping the media would snap some nice pictures of him, or he'd finally charm someone this time.
"Captain, you ought to stop that," you said. "It's rather embarrassing, you look desperate now."
"Oh, would you shut up," he said. "You're ruining my good name!"
You snorted. "What good name," you scoffed.
"I'm starting to think its your fault I'm not charming anyone. Perhaps if you didn't stop me every time, someone would have found me by now," he said.
"Yeah, right. Captain Ashiro seems to be having no issues charming people and I've never seen her try to," you said.
"You little shit," he said.
"Besides they're going to be utterly disappointed if they think this is what you're like and then they find out what you're⊠actually like," you said, and he was starting to think you wanted him to fire you. "It's okay. Someone will see how you're actually lovely at times soon."
"What?" he asked, shocked by what you said.
"What?" you replied, confused.
"Youâ you said lovely," he said quietly. Suddenly he felt flustered.
"Oh," you said, looking away and avoiding eye contact. It wasn't like you didn't mean to say that, but you didn't think it was that big of a deal. Rather, how flustered he sounded took you by surprise. âWell, youâre a little lame but youâre a good guy. Like you pretend you only do it for the media, but I know youâre always checking the alleyways that donât have as much surveillance just in case, and checking alleyways isnât something a captain has to do. And we both know the media isnât writing about anything you do there. Things like that.â
âYou never know!â he said, and you snorted.
âAlright then,â you said. âYou do you, Captain.â
âI will!â he said back, trying to sound proud.
A week had passed and here he was, doing what he always did after arriving fashionably late to the scene and taking all the kaiju out in a matter of minutes: standing around trying to look good. Because he wanted love, and anyone would do. Anyone who liked him was supposed to do.
...
And yet he wished for you.
He wished that when he woke up, the first thing he would see was you. He wished that you'd smile at him everyday with love and genuine joy the way you did to others, and he wished that youâd smile that way to him alone. He wished that after a long day, he was the one you came home to. He wished from the bottom of his heart that you would always be safe and no harm would ever come your way. He wished that your days were filled with laughter and smiles and he knew he would risk his life to protect that.
It was so unlike him in a way he absolutely hated. True love was supposed to be nonsense and someone being âthe oneâ was supposed to be some dramatic line in a movie. It upset him, that he was so utterly fond of you. Yet, no matter how much it upset him, it didn't change the fact that he was, and he couldn't deny it anymore after trying to ignore it for the full week.
So here he was, acting stupid again, hoping that youâd scold him again or tell him heâs embarrassing himself, because thatâs what itâs come down to. He just wanted another reason to talk to you.
But you wouldnât come to stop him after 10 whole minutes.
âWhy arenât you stopping me?â he asked, irritated.
âPardon?â you asked, utterly confused.
âWhy arenât you telling me to stop?â he asked again. He was aware how silly he sounded, but he was pissed off that you meant so much to him so he had to take it out on you.
âBecause you told me to stop last time??â you replied. âI thought you were going to keep this up until you found yourself a partner.â
âYouâre the one who told me to find someone that saw how I wasâŠ. lovelyâŠ. at times,â he said, but said the lovely very quietly. Remembering that you had described him as lovely made his cheeks burn and heâd rather die than let you see that.
âI mean, yeah. I do think you should,â you said.
âDonât you notice, though?â he asked quietly, avoiding eye contact. There was a moment of silence.
âI do,â you said, and immediately he looked up to face you. You had a grin on your face and you looked so proudâ you looked like you had won a game. Oh, how he hated you.
âYouâre so annoying,â he said, and you raised an eyebrow.
âRich coming from you,â you said.
âSo, do youâ,â he started to yell before cutting himself off. Carefully, he tried again. âWould you please⊠uh⊠be mineâŠ?â
Oh, this is so embarrassing, he thought. Perhaps youâd laugh at him, but he wanted to do this properly, or at the very least try to. Heâd be far more than just stupid to mess this up now. He was finally in love.
But your laughter never came. When he looked up your eyes were wide and you looked so flustered, but soon you had the most beautiful smile on your face.
âI would absolutely love to,â you said.
So he kissed you right then and there, because there was nothing he wanted to do more at the moment.
He laughed a little.
âWhatâs wrong?â you asked.
âNo, nothing,â he said.
There was no way just anyone would doâ it had to be you.
just saw asteroid city last night, pls explain the proposed significance of the kiss!!
answering this publicly hope thats ok! cant do a readmore im on mobile *****asteroid city spoilers below beware*****
i dont remember anyones names so this is gonna sound partly unhinged. okay so the edward norton playwright and jason schwartzman actor (not character, in the black and white parts) are lovers right. tbh i thought this was kind of a gag and forgot about it. but later we find out that the playwright died 6 months into the production. i didnt make the connection that THATâs why the actor-jason has to suddenly leave the stage and freaks out backstage about how heâs not sure heâs Doing it right. hes not talking about acting!! because he himself is literally grieving his lover while heâs playing a character whoâs grieving his wife written by his lover so obviously itâs too much!!! actor-jason is trying to find meaning in his death through his writing but there isnt any meaning in death [gerris drinkwater voice] which is what the play is trying to say anyway. he doesnt think heâs performing grief right even in his own life!!! (and tbh itâs the 50s so he wouldnt be able to perform grief publicly anyway!!!!) the play starts with a car accident⊠anyone would search for some hidden meaning there, some signâŠ. so when he talks to margot robbie outside itâs not really about finding the CHARACTERâs motivations itâs about the actor himself being able to process the playwrightâs death! and adrien brody director was probably also dealing with that too (him and norton seemed to be good buddies) so the whole âsleeping backstageâ thing gets a bit sadder maybe? maybe everyone else got this in the theatre and im just stupid lol but crazy making stuff to me!!! the whole story is about sublimated gay grief that cannot be expressed?!?!
the tweet that caught me onto this was here which posits that the playwrightâs death was a suicide but i think thatâs pretty stupid and unnecessary because the whole thing about the play asteroid city is that death is random and meaningless. im pretty sure thatâs what the alien representsâ a shocking and absurd event that isnt outright evil or menacing, not something anyone can predict or make sense of, itâs just a thing that happens to you out of nowhere, it doesnt mean anything. heâs a little black figure, heâs death! giving and taking! aagh
#youâre the wife who played my actor :(#posthumus#asteroid city#imagine youre in love with a playwright and he writes a play before he even meets you about how you cant get over his death which hasnt#happened yet. id go insane too#im going to see it again to see how this informs the whole thing because its driving me crazy#rewatching the performances knowing that they're performing people performing. augh.#remember when bryan cranston accidentally appears in frame. rending my garments#also âyou cant wake up until you fall asleepâ confused me a bit but then i remembered that the margot robbie scene was supposed to be put o#as a dream sequence and it makes sense now. thanks#aliens are the new fairytale monster symbol of death. the ultimate Unknowable#EDIT okay i read the wikipedia summary got some facts wrong adrien brody is sleeping in the theatre during rehearsals so its not because of#the playwrightâs death heâs just like that.
Hi Finz!!!!!!! Still can't get over the fact we're mututals because your art is so good, ahhhhhh-
What's your reaction to the newest chapter of Batman: Echoes '89? (Or something like that) because I for one am FROTHING AT THE MOUTH!!!!! Why did they have to make everyone so hot....
Look at his smile, he's so precious đ„șđ„șđ„șđ„ș (also, what's your reaction to this man being confirmed as this universe's Riddler?)
But let's also not forget the man himself, the Master of Fear.... he absolutely SLAYS with the gas mask, oh my God
I wasn't sure at first how to feel about him, but OH BOY do I love him now!!!
Apologies for the rambling, anyways: your thoughts on the designs and how things are going in the story so far?
Your thoughts are my thoughts exactly, dear! ^///^ Edward is the cutest and it's incredibly endearing how both of their smiles could light up an entire room! This story has been such a pleasant surprise. It's unique, gripping, stays true to the '89 vibe of the movie without being too silly, and Crane is down BAD for well-read men... I mean, what's not to love?
Regarding Scarecrow's design, like you, I had some trouble warming up to it, but the latest issue has finally won me over. Reaaally made me envy Bruce! đđđŠ
#As for my reaction to the man that constantly acts like an unstable wet cat being confirmed as this universe's Riddler#it was basically 'yeah that makes sense.' XD#He is so unhinged and I'm here for it.#Long text#Long text tw#Thank you so much for interacting with me AUGH!! ;///;#Scriddler#Riddler#Edward Nygma#Jonathan Crane#Scarecrow#batman '89#Batman comics#DC comics#Doodles
