The Fool: Where did Rook's journey begin? What were they doing before joining the Veilguard?

Daea was happily (kind of) being a warden. Because they were pretty outspoken about who seemed to get prioritized when deciding which darkspawn sightings to reply to first, theyve not really climbed up the ladder, even though they've been in the order for ten years by veilguard and are otherwise competent and efficient. The inciting incident for the warden background, saving the village by deciding to attack rather than wait for reinforcements, was the last in a long streak of incidents, which Daea gets away with in a sense because what's the first warden gonna do, fire them? well, turns out he can do the next best thing and assign them to work with Varric, preferably far away from his sight. oh well. Daea wasn't too broken up about it.

The Empress: What does family mean for Rook? It means a lot! Daea is from a dalish clan in the Anderfels. Their mother passed when they were seven from illness, and they had a very adversarial and fraught relationship with their father after that, until they raised the alarm and fought when the clan got attacked by darkspawn, getting tained and subsequently being shipped off to the Wardens to attempt the Joining. Their relationship started mending after that - their father broke down when they almost died and realized he did not want their relationship to end like this, and they missed him and their clan terribly in Weisshaupt. They write a lot - i imagine for letters to get to dalish clans there has to be a specific system, maybe letters being sent to a postmaster in Hossberg, then passed on to elves directly in the alienage, and from there dalish clans either come collect them or courriers get sent to deliver them where they know a clan is staying? Either way, letters to and from their clan and father regularly. They've also managed to visit them, though only a handful of times, as they're not particularly free of their movements or in good favor of the higher ranking wardens. They consider themself dalish first and warden second, even if the warden part is what takes up the most space in their life now.

The Hermit: When Rook is alone with their thoughts, what do they think about? Is solitude a blessing or a curse for them?

They don't mind a bit of solitude from time to time, but don't deal that well with it! Going from their clan, which was tight-knit and where privacy was a luxury, to the wardens, living together in Weisshaupt or camping out in tents most of the time, they've rarely been truly alone. There's always someone around to bother them, or even just Be There. So they do enjoy the little snatches of solitude they get - until they're in the Lighthouse with their own room further from everyone and adjusting is actually hard at first. They have a lot of trouble sleeping the first couple months, and do spend some time with Lucanis then.

They do often think of their clan - how they're doing, going through memories - but during the Veilguard timeline, they also think a LOT about their gods. It seems elves already know that the Evanuris were not entirely benevolent - my personal headcanon is there was an Arlathven in those ten years between DAI and DAVG and the information was disseminated amongst dalish clans - but it's not something they've had to confront that directly until now. They reflect on their own worship, what they believe and believed in, how they perceive their gods - Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain are clearly not the figures they thought, but they're also blighted, horrifically so, and the one insisting they were always evil is Fen'harel, god of lies. They just think a lot about it, about who they used to be, what they became, and how, and what they have to do now, and if they are still their Creators now.

if you’re ever in the position to choose between giving up and accepting defeat, and actually trying to fight the ancient unkillable god that is about to peel apart reality like a string cheese, remember this: scientifically speaking, you might as well give it a shot!

1.there were trees at the beginning of the world! there were trees so long ago that they predate bacteria that causes wood to decay. when a tree fell, it would lie there in stasis and there wasn’t any way of breaking down wood xylem on a molecular level in that way.

2. it seems obvious to say, but wood eating bacteria are literally incapable of comprehending what they’re breaking down. It’s just not information conciously available to a microorganism. they don’t know what they’re deconstructing, where it came from, bacteria have no way to even fathom the existence of a tree as a concept.

3. Regardless of the facts above, the world we live in today is a world where wood inevitably decomposes

it is worth fighting the unkillable god no matter how pointless it seems. it is worth taking the risk even though youre trying to accomplish something impossible. the reality in which you live was also once reality in which trees didn’t rot. You live in a reality that allows for existence before the possibility of destruction. you live in a reality where uncomprehending microbes break down matter that is so far beyond the scope of their comprehension that it feels comical to specify something so obvious. you live in a reality that occasionally allows unshakeable physical truths to be altered with no warning.

It is worth fighting the unkillable god because trees are so old they predate the source of their destruction, and it still did not spare them. It is worth fighting the unkillable god because bacteria rots unthinkingly, because there is room in our cosmos for destruction without comprehension on the part of the destroyer. It is worth fighting the unkillable god because now and then reality retracts the promise of immortality without fanfare, and when that happens there is no mercy for the ancient. the unmaking is not softer for the desecrators ignorance. for all things, existence is endless until the exact point where it ends.

so you might as well try to kill the unkillable god. it doesn’t seem likely, but at the beginning of the world, trees didn’t rot. so you never know! you never know
