North: adults are the most insanely stupid people I have the displeasure of interacting with. Ian, referring to himself and the Clan: even us? North: especially you guys. Hamish: petition to kick Killough out so he stops insulting us. Malcolm: seconded.

It's been forever since I've mentioned any books so I just wanted to shout out a few of my favourites from this year so far
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mapping The Interior by Stephen Graham Jones
This little 100ish page novella was my very first read of the year and I truly could not have started with better. It follows a 15 year old Native American boy who believes he sees his dead father walk through their house one night and his mission to recreate the experience to find answers. It's an exploration of grief and trauma, and whether or not these cycles can be broken
Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay
This is so not for everyone lol. I've read four of Tremblay's books this year and this is my favourite. This book is about a horror movie that was never released. A couple of decades later, after a few scenes and the screenplay made it onto the internet, the film has gained a cult following and the only surviving member has agreed to be a part of a much anticipated remake. This is told through excerpts of the original screenplay, the autobiographical audiobook by "the thin kid" and the current timeline of the film getting made. It's weird and uncomfortable and I ate it up in a single day
Sea Change by Gina Chung
Obligatory sad girl seeks peace entry in the list. Ro has just turned 30, works at a mall aquarium, and her boyfriend has just left her to go to Mars. Estranged from her family and sidelined from her best friends life as she plans her dream wedding, Ro spends her nights drinking sharktini's and generally making bad choices. The only light in her life is a giant Pacific octopus, Dolores, who she sees as her last real connection to her missing father, and what happens when Dolores is put up for sale. It's sad and melancholy but with a throughline of hope that slowly blossoms into what my heart needed to read lol
Siren Queen by Nghi Vo
I loved this so much. This book follows a Chinese American girl named Luli Wei as she breaks into 1930s-ish Hollywood and her journey to becoming a star as the monster known as the Siren Queen. I know that's a short summary in comparison but that's because the sale is absolutely in the vibes which are basically 'what if classic Hollywood was Faerie and make it sapphic' and if any one of those words appeal to you in the slightest then I beg you to try this one. I took out an American library e-card just to get my hands on this and it's best decision I've made all year. Please read it lol
Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson
This audiobook y'all. The book follows Lillian as she reconnects with her childhood sort of best friend from boarding school who has written to her begging for help with her politician husbands two children when their mother suddenly passes away. Lillian, living the life of the persistent down and outer, agrees easily, it's just for the summer and she can't turn down the money, after all how hard could it be? There's one little catch though, sometimes the kids burst into flames. When I say this audiobook broke my heart and then healed my soul I promise you I am barely exaggerating. I'm sure you could just read it and it would still be good, but Marin Ireland's narration brings so much heart to this story that I physically cannot bear to recommend it any other way lol. If you only listen to one book this year then this is the one it should be

RTD's defence of doctor who being put on Iplayer and Disney+ at 12am GMT is stupid.
And not stupid in a "why is he doing that" way, stupid in a "he's talking shite" way.
Don't get me wrong, I get he has to defend it to keep that disney money or whatever, but his responses to how this change affects fans of the show are bad, and to feign that it suits the viewers better is just a mockery.
He's, for some reason, saying kids should stay up till 2am to watch it and comparing it to midnight H*rry P*tter book releases, like an episode coming out ever week for a season and a physical book coming out once every 2 years or so is the same situation with the same spoiler risk I guess???
RTD has also said that it was easy for him, the 60 year old man, to avoid spoilers for Game Of Thrones while that was coming out in the morning so why can't we all just do the same. And also said if you're in any Doctor Who fan spaces online you'll get spoiled before the episodes come out anyway! Because people leaking the show, and Americans being able to watch and talk about the show before you because of how the release time suits them better is the exact same situation I guess!
Also him talking out his arse with "well the show being on at 6.30 made it so people working Saturday night shifts couldn't watch it so there's no release time that'll suit everyone" is really the cherry on top of him using shite excuses.
TLDR: While I understand why he has to defend this decision, his responses to the valid annoyances to the main audience of the show that live in a GMT time zone, or who will want to watch it on BBC 1, are out of touch, and the least he could do was come up with better excuses.

Hiii cubana here, living in the united snakes. Miami can be fun with the right ppl but it's also gusano land so I can only take it in small doses. In general we have wayyy more things (clothes, electronics, food, wifi, medical supplies etc) than Cuba but we are constantly at risk of losing really important things like housing. There are so many homeless individuals and families. Most people, even people who are considered rich, are a medical emergency away from homelessness. Also our urban and suburban design sucks, you have to drive everywhere in most places. If your car breaks and you can't fix or replace it you are fucked since public transit is typically unreliable or takes hours (some cities like NYC this isn't the case but in general transit is pretty bad here especially compared to other parts of the world). Something I do love about living here though is my community. I love them infinitely. And it is really lovely being around people from all different cultures and learning from each other. But the fascism 😐😐😐 the brainwashing 😐😐😐 the racism 😐😐😐 we in the trenches here. Trying to kill the beast from the inside.
some of the responses I have gotten from people including you makes it sound horrible oh my goodness 😭
I've never planned on going to the United states (Especially since my parents themselves hate it)

Been thinking about Nancy in the cfdau (as I always am) and I think one of the things that I’m sort of struggling with in this fic that I haven’t really been able to name until now is that she is just…so alone.
And Robin is a very lonely person who has lost a lot of people in her life, so she was also very alone during the original fic! But also she almost always had Steve. So all of her lowest points, as disastrous as they were, were also Steve’s lowest points. She always had someone else to take care of or to take care of her or at the very least be miserable and messed up right next to her. There are zero long periods of time when Robin is completely isolated.
And it’s not like Nancy is on her own all the time, but she so rarely has someone she can genuinely open up to and share her internal thoughts and feelings with. It’s an interesting comparison from a story standpoint but from a writing standpoint hoo boy, this story feels so internalized sometimes. Because she doesn’t really have someone to bounce off of. No one is there to force her to reflect or get out of her own head in the way that Steve (or even Max!) so often does with Robin. And it does lead to some interesting things, like all the ways Nancy pretends for other people and for herself, and one-sided conversations where Nancy is responding honestly in her own thoughts but dishonestly with her words. And I don’t think it’s bad or worse than the cfdau or anything like that. But it’s different and it’s interesting and idk I just felt like talking about it

the uk is so fucking stupid i cant believe i have to be neighbours with them. they’ve turned match of the day into a culture war tactic so now you have actual tory MPs saying that yesterday’s stripped-down, 20-minute, no-commentary, no-punditry edition of MOTD because of the staff boycott/strike was somehow better than what it was before. “no waffling or ‘experts’ sharing the opinions. get rid of them and save the taxpayer millions”. as if your taxes will somehow be lowered astronomically because shearer & wrighty won’t be on your screens for 40 mins on a saturday. cop the fuck on. also you’re all obviously lying, you useless boring sacks of shite, because match of the day has been going on for FIFTY-NINE YEARS and no-one ever complained that the commentary & punditry was futile. sports fans want analysis of their team’s match. i wanted to be shown proper replays and have the presenters talk through richarlison’s goal given as offside by VAR. but alas, no. i mean for fuck sake, i don’t think any snotty tory MP saying that MOTD was “far better last night” had ever even watched the programme before! as a profession, footballers (and since most pundits are ex-footballers, my point stands with them) are more likely than nearly any other high-earners in the UK to have come from working-class backgrounds. football has been, historically, a working-class sport. so can the rugby-watching, polo-playing, right-wing, snobbish cunts of conservative MPs stop patronising what is one of the biggest solidarity movements in football to date concerning a man potentially losing his job for criticising the government.

me getting an email that my package was delivered so i happily skip down the stairs because i figured it was the special edition of mdzs that i preordered online, only to see a very flat parcel on the front porch that definitely isn’t a book. maybe it’s the extra fanart associated with tthe special edition that just came in before the book??? MAYBE??
it’s labeled with a message that says “extremely urgent” so it’s something important, but i didn’t order express delivery for this book…..what else can it be then?? it has my name on it so let me just open it and se—
MY PASSPORT(?(?)))?/)/€:&,&:8:829292915161
#❣️#I GINALLY GOT MY PASPORT HOLY SUIT#GUYS#GUYS PLS UNDERSTAND#this isn’t just about the fact that i even have a passport in the first place now (although it is really cool)#but when i put in my application for the passport it was in a very critical time slot#the us is an absolute shitshow right now processing passport applications bc there’s been a huge influx in the past couple months#which naturally makes processing times stretch out a bit longer so#it’s very critical that if you have somewhere really important to travel you send in your application MONTHS in advance#because the processing times for regular applications are 10-13 weeks / expedited (express) applications are 7-9 weeks#because of my very poor time management and other circumstances i turned in my application at a time where#it was not guaranteed i’d get it in time for my class trip to ireland near the end of may#this was entirely my fault but there was simply nothing i can do but hope it came in in time#which it did thank the gods—but more thanks goes out to my professor because when i expressed to her my concerns#she went above & beyond to get into contact with people she knew who worked with the department of state and who work at the passport agency#that processes these applications#and i ended up signing this official form which was basically like an appeal letter (i have experience with this lol so it was pretty easy)#but even with all that there was just no way for me to know i would get it in time#the next option would’ve been that if i reached the 14-day window for my trip and still hadn’t gotten my passport—#i would’ve had to call this emergency contact and go to buffalo where there’s this other agency that helps out with issues like this#BUT I DONT HAVE TO NOW#again-this was completely my fault and i would’ve had no one else to blame but myself if#i wasn’t able to go on this trip#but because i had reached out to my professor about it instead of ‘hoping for the best’ (which i still kinda was) i’m able to go#so like….excuse me while i cry because i really wanted to go on this trip and now i will :’)#anyone who reads all this gets a gold star ⭐️#personal
