On Prythian and Fairy tales

Here's the thing about ACoTaR that drives me insane; SJM had the perfect set up for a Lunarian Chronicles-level of fairy tale retellings. The first book is literally a ya fantasy version of beauty and the beast. She did all the work setting up and then abandoned the concept! Why? Seven Courts--seven books, each for a different fairy tale. You could even keep the Hybern/Koschei meta-plot, just have it carry through the seven books and end with an MCU style final battle. She did something similar enough in ToG.

Anyway, this is a very long way of leading in to what I think each of the court/fairy tale match-ups should have been.

Spring; Beauty and the Beast. Done. Perfect. Give Feyre and Tamlin a happy ending instead of the BS from book 2.

Autumn: Cinderella. Beron is finally insistent that his eldest marry. Problem--Eris discovers his mate is a servant; someone his father absolute would never allow.

Summer: The Little Mermaid. A naiad/siren saves Tarquin's life somehow and he tries to use it to improve faerie rights while the naiad tries to use him for her own gains. Except they fall in love.

Winter: This one I'm the least certain about. The Ice Queen is right there of course, but the original is FUCKING AWFUL. So, something about a cursed artifact--the Trove perhaps???--getting Kallias and Vivianne forced to work together. Childhood bffs to lovers pipeline.

Dawn: Snow White. Thesan's niece/something goes missing after Amarantha is killed. Turns out some of the priestesses are planning a coup and the niece is a problem. Enter...someone?? Nuan maybe. Idk, we know very little about Dawn y'all.

Day: Sleeping Beauty. An ancient stronghold is discovered but is deeply cursed. To prove himself as a worthy Heir, Lucien has to go in and discover its secrets--and in the mean time finds an ancient seer that was sealed away from the Age of Legends.

Night: RAPUNZEL. Literally built for it, smh. A Hewn City lady--Thanatos's unnamed daughter perhaps?--is locked away inside the mountain. Enter Rhys, who needs to get a hold of his people and a political marriage is his best bet. ALTERNATIVE: Mor is Rapunzel and Az is her Flynn Rider. Depends on how you want to take it.

Do you see the vision? Do you understand what we could've had???

For now, I can only say that over the past few months, the only game I've truly relaxed with has been Hades. (Yeah, the league of legends has been put on hold for now with all these changes.)

Scythes, as a type of weapon, have always felt quite captivating to me. I believe Libra will get a second part dedicated to another character. The first version, the one you're looking at now, is inspired by Thanatos. And honestly, I’ll need similar ones in the game myself in the future—no point in hiding it.

Low energy Devotional Acts for when you don’t have a lot of energy (or time, or money, etc.)

- listen to a devotional playlist for Him

- listens to ‘dark ambient’ soundscapes

- learn about butterflies

- if able, visit a cemetery

- learn about the work that death doulas, hospice workers, funeral directors, morticians, cemetery caretakers, and grief counselors do

- if able tend to the grave of a loved one (tidy it up, bring new flowers/decorations, etc.)

- talk to deceased loved ones (doesn’t have to be anything fancy- I talk to my dead dog all the time I say good morning to him and when we leave I tell him we’ll be back etc. whatever you wanna tell them you tell them!)

- learn the stages of grief and how complex grief is

- if interested and able (I know this can be touchy) learn about the process of dying and what happens to the body after death

- learn about what you can have done to your body after death- there’s lots of interesting options out there! Burial at sea is still very much a thing that can be done, I didn’t know that until I got curious and looked this stuff up!

- if able and willing talk to your loved ones about what your wishes are for when you die- what do you want to happen to your body, what do you want your funeral to be like, etc. (I include this because I used to work in assisted living and nothing is worse than your family just not knowing what your wishes are for when you die, I’ve heard too many horror stories)

- learn about death magic and spirit work

- learn about the Victorian era spirituality craze (like the uptick in things like seances and all that, it’s all very interesting)

- learn about the many ways to communicate with the dead

- destigmatize death- death has become a very hush-hush subject which doesn’t really do us any favors in my opinion so don’t be afraid to talk about it, talk about your wishes, etc.

- learn about funerary practices throughout history and around the world

- learn about the meaning of death throughout history and around the world

- listen to songs about death

- read poems, books, plays about death- there’s a lot of them and they’re quite interesting

- watch movies/shows about death (my personal favorite is the seventh seal)

- if able and willing reflect on your own thoughts and feelings on death (can be death in general, about your own mortality, etc.)

- look up cemetery symbols and symbolism! And whenever able do a cemetery scavenger hunt

- wear black

- learn about how to help someone who is grieving

- listen to goth music

- be kind to spirits

- learn about haunted locations

- read ghost stories (idk if this counts but my personal favorite is The Legend of Sleepy Hollow)

Sky isn't First's reincarnation, Warriors is.

Heads up, this is just a headcanon! I am using LOZ canon in parts to help fortify my thinking but again, this isnt to prove a point!

Also tagging people below! I was going to reblog my og post but this came out too long and would just be better as its own post!

I believe that Sky isn't the reincarnation of Hyila's chosen hero, but instead the hero's incarnation. While both the fandom (loz and lu) and the canon use the two words interchangeably, they truly do have two different meanings, even if they are considered 'small.'

So does this mean I believe Warriors to be the hero's direct reincarnation? In a way, yes I do. I believe that there are some threads in canon that can stablize this idea, but most are based on personal preference and headcanons.

If you wanna know more, ill be going more into it under the cut!

Firstly, the difference between reincarnation and an incarnation!

Reincarnation, defined as “a person or animal in whom a particular soul is believed to have been reborn”

an example of this would be Sky, Sun and Demise. We see many of these reincarnations, but most notably and factual would be Demise’s reincarnation to Ganondorf. They share the same soul, at least the one from OOT does.

Incarnations, Defined as “a person who embodies in the flesh a deity, spirit, or abstract quality.”

Now, there arent any solidly proven instances in LOZ but most can assume that Nayru, Din and Farore from the OOS and OOA games/mangas are incarnations of the deities they are named after. But a more well rounded example would be to look at mythos in the real world, specifically Greek mythos with their gods Gaia, Thanatos, Nyx, and more.

Sky, or SS Link, has been believed to be the reincarnation of the First hero (“First”), is it even easier to prove him to be a incarnation. Sky, in the canon of Skyward Sword (“SS”) is not proven to be the direct reincarnation of the chosen hero- he is said to be the chosen hero, and plays such roll in the story of SS but there is nothing that says he is the direct reincarnation of First. Perhaps there is evidence that states otherwise, that is likely in the vast canon of Legend of Zelda, but it feels (and is stated) that the cycle of ‘reincarnation’ starts with SS link and his Zelda.

An incarnation feels like the better fit for the character of Sky. He is, and would be, the incarnation of the Chosen Hero, a heroic spirit known for his courage and loyalty to the divine. Hyila in the uncanon manga stated that she would meet First again, but again we do not get any notion that this refers to any reincarnation like the goddess takes.

Now for Warriors, or Hw Link, there are obviously the visual similarities that connect Warriors with First as both are the only one seen to wear scarves, as well as the one shoulder pauldrons. But it should also be noted the similarities in the stories both partake in. The main concept is very similar to the rest of the courageous heroes, but these two seem to be the only was who have fought in war of sorts, both battling against a dark army as the only hero able to fall the mighty leader.

Now, most of the rest of these thoughts would be based on the frames of headcanons rather than facts, as the idea behind this thought was of the poetic similarities between the two characters rather than facts within the LOZ or LU canon

Warriors and First being the 'leaders' of a war, neither being ready for such responsibilities yet being forced to none the less because they are the only ones able to hold such responsibilities

Both feeling unworthy of holding such power for being 'unpure' (First; being imprisoned for 4 years, Wars; encounters with Cia and/or having Dark Link being created)

Being experienced, infield fighters compared to dungeon crawlers, both of which are used to working with others in planning/fighting

First has been characterize within the fandom (and canon) as a recluse, naturally from his trauma of imprisonment yet even then he still has this authoritative status and energy to him. And while Warriors is seen as anything BUT a recluse in the fandom, it is still canon within the canon that he was infact a mute. So, its interesting to note how similar the two's nature would of been if certain characteristics in canon werent there (ie, HW link getting overconfident and prideful, which First shows little to no traits of in his appearances)

Back to characterization, both tend to be depicted as chivalrous men, either because of their roles as important 'military' figures or their natural personalities.

These are really just my beginning thoughts on this! Im....I like this idea a lot- as you can tell!

Nevermore headcanons, since it’s been a while (modern au)

Lenore, Pluto, and Duke all meet up to play Hades every once in a while

Duke’s favourite character is Thanatos, Pluto’s is Hypnos, and Lenore’s is Meg (since she reminds her on Annabel)

Eulalie and Berenice join sometimes, but neither of them have a device compatible for Hades, so they borrow one of the other’s

Eulalie’s favourite book series are tied between Miss Peregrine’s home, and Asylum

Annabel would never admit it, but her favourite band is Siouxsie and The Banshees

Of course, all the misfits also listen to goth music

Lenore likes Bauhaus, Eulalie’s favourite is Blackbriar, Duke likes Joy Division, Berenice likes Robert Smith, Morella *adores* Depeche Mode, and Pluto’s favourite band is The Cure

They can all agree on The Sisters of Mercy. Specifically, First And Last And Always

The group all like watching Descendants movies. Whether it’s genuine, or just to make fun of it varies from person to person

⊹ ₊Hypnos & Sarpedon ₊⊹

One thing I find quite beautiful in Hypnos' mythos, is His relation to death, and no, not just from His brother Thanatos, but specifically His (albeit small) role in the myth of Sarpedon.

I'm speaking more in the sense of passing away in your sleep or a peaceful death - feeling like you're falling asleep even if you are dying. It's something I find quite nice; He'll lull us into His embrace before passing us on to His brother. I don't know, it's just something I personally find comforting.

So today, I've decided to go into a bit of a deep dive on the myth of Sarpedon and Hypnos' involvement in it - along with commentary from me - as well as looking at artistic depictions of this myth! (there are more than I thought there were)

Who is Sarpedon?

"In Greek mythology, Sarpedon was the son of Zeus, the king of the gods, and Laodamia, the daughter of Bellerophon. He was a Lycian prince and a hero in the Trojan War." - Russell-Cotes

If you go searching, you will most likely come across multiple versions of Sarpedon, atply named Sarpedon 1, Sarpedon 2, and Sarpedon 3. Both one and two share parentage with Zeus in the myths, whereas the third one does not, and does not seem to be related to the other two, simply sharing a name. For ease of talking I will refer to the Sarpedon we are talking about today - Sarpedon 2 - the Hero who fought and died in the Trojan war. Some writers tried to reconcile the longevity of the myth of Sarpedon by stating that the first was the grandfather of Sarpedon 2.

"The ancient sources that claimed that Sarpedon had been blessed with long life, subsequently state that the Sarpedon at Troy was the son of Zeus and Europa. Writers though believed that this longevity was itself a myth, sought to reconcile the appearance of Sarpedon at Troy, by stating that he was the grandson of the first Sarpedon." - Greek Legends and Myths

He was a Prince of Lycia and led the Trojan armies in defence for Troy, alongside his cousin, Glaucus, the Captain of the Lycian armies. Sarpedon then became one of the most highly revered defenders of Troy, trailing just behind Hector.

However, the glory and fighting could not last forever:

"It had been prophesised though that Sarpedon was destined to die at the hands of Patroclus at Troy; and a one-on-one fight would occur between the two when Patroclus put on the armour of Achilles to defend the Achaean camp." - Greek Legends and Myths

And so came true the prophecy. Zeus had wanted to save His son from his demise, but it was then brought to His attention by the other gods, including His wife Hera, that their children too were fighting and dying in the war. Why should Sarpedon be an exception? Thus King Zeus recoiled, and did not interfere with His sons fate; Sarpedon was slain by Patroclus.

"A struggle took place for the possession of his body until Apollo rescued it from the Greeks, washed it, anointed it with ambrosia, and handed it over to Hypnos and Thanatos (Sleep and Death), by whom it was conveyed for burial to Lycia." - Brittanica

Hypnos' role in the myth:

"[Hera speaks to Zeus about his son Sarpedon's fated death :] ‘But after the soul and the years of his life have left him [Sarpedon], then send Thanatos (Peaceful Death) to carry him away, and Hypnos (Sleep), who is painless, until they come with him to the countryside of broad Lykia (Lycia) where his brothers and countrymen shall give him due burial with tomb and gravestone.’" - Homer, Iliad 16. 453 ff  [theoi.com]

After Sarpedon's death on the battlefield, he was taken by Apollo, prepped for burial, and handed over to Hypnos and Thanatos to deliver to back to his homeland, Lycia.

Something sticks out to me in the above passage - "and Hypnos (Sleep), who is painless". Painless; sleep is painless. Seems like we've known that for centuries; that the best way to die is in your sleep. I also think that having Hypnos present as he dies gives Sarpedon his due respect. Although it may be their career or their livelihood, soldiers still hold the right to not have to die brutally and without peace. Of course Sarpedon met his brutal fate, yes, but I believe the horror of it was lessened by the soothing painlessness of sleep washing over him - letting his transition into death be a gentle one. A respect for the life that he held. This due respect given may have also been a nod to Sarpedon's godly lineage, being King Zeus' son. Unfortunaetly, I doubt many had the time to carry every soldiers body off the ground and give each and every one a proper burial rite.

"[Sarpedon was killed at Troy and the god Apollon rescued his body from the fighting :] Then [Apollon] gave him [the body of Sarpedon] into the charge of swift messengers to carry him, of Hypnos (Sleep) and Thanatos (Death), who are twin brothers, and these two presently laid him down within the rich countryside of broad Lykia (Lycia)." - Homer, Iliad 16. 681 ff [theoi.com]

"But the highest god [Zeus], mighty with his thunderbolt, sent Hypnos (Sleep) and Thanatos (Death) from snowy Olympos to the fearless fighter Sarpedon [to carry off his body for burial]." - Bacchylides, Frag 20e (from Oxyrhynchus Papyrus 2081) (trans. This is also not the first time that Hypnos has been said to usher someone on the brink of death to His brother.

"At the end of his life, having reached a very great age, Gorgias of Leontini was overcome by weakness and lay gradually slipping away into sleep. When one of his friends came to see him and asked how he was, Gorgias said : ‘Hypnos (Sleep) is now beginning to hand me over to his brother [i.e. Thanatos, Death].’" - Aelian, Historical Miscellany 2. 34 (trans. Wilson) (Greek rhetorician C2nd to 3rd A.D.) [theoi.com]

Hermes?

You read that right. Hermes was sometimes identified with Hypnos, and had giving sleep as one of His domains. Whilst Hypnos and the Oneiroi personified (Daimones) sleep and dreams, it was sometimes Hermes who was named as the giver of sleep and dreams. Whilst in Homer and many other writers' works Hypnos and Hermes are seperate divinities, it is thought that at one point they were regarded as the same entity.

These are just some examples among many others:

"He [Hermes] caught up the staff (rhabdos), with which he mazes the eyes of those mortals whose eyes he would maze, or wakes again the sleepers. Holding this in his hands, strong (kratus) Argeiphontes winged his way onward." - Homer, Iliad 24. 339 ff (trans. Lattimore) (Greek epic C8th B.C.) [theoi.com]

"And he [Hermes] took the rod that lulls men's eyes for him, at his pleasure, or awakens others when they slumber." - Homer, Odyssey 24. 1 & 99 ff [theoi.com]

"May Maia's son [Hermes], as he rightfully should, lend his aid . . . by his mysterious utterance he brings darkness over men's eyes by night, and by day he is no more clear at all." - Aeschylus, Libation Bearers 811 ff (trans. Smyth) (Greek tragedy C5th B.C.) [theoi.com]

"[...] He found the Phaiakian lords and rulers pouring libations from their cups to the keen-sighted (euskopos) Argeiphontes (Radiant One) [Hermes] to whom by custom they poured libation last when they turned their thoughts to the night's rest." - Homer, Odyssey 7. 137 ff [theoi.com]

But why am I bringing this up? Because I think it's important to account for one of the (pressumed) origins of Hypnos - stemming from Hermes. Hermes is a psychopomp, a guide of the dead, leading souls to the underworld. Similar to what Hypnos does when handing over sleeping people to his brother, Thanatos (Gentle Death). Whilst it is not considered one of Hypnos' domains, I (UPG) like to consider it as one. Of course it's not a major part of my worship of Him, but something I take note of. It only makes sense (to me), given He is twins with Death Himself.

The above does not explicitly state Hypnos, but as Him being sleep personified, it also kind of does. Either way, I thought it relevant.

Previously I had never seen this artwork before, and I must say I find the interpretation of Hypnos (orange cloak at the bottom, blonde hair with flowers) quite lovely. As well as the depiction of Thanatos (wings and inverted torch). It gives these loevly Underworld deities a sense of life to their characters - yes, the irony is slightly intentional. But I think the clouds which Lord Hypnos is resting on is quite fitting.

Now I couldn't find distinct names for these ones but they all depict the scene in a similar / same way, so I will place them all together. (Yes, one was shown earlier)

This has been a bit of a ramble, I'm aware, but I hop it has managed to get my point across about Hypnos' relation to death - without focusing too much on his brotherly relation with Lord Thanatos.

I had felt Lord Hypnos pulling me to re-read the myth for about a week now, and so I finally did, with a tumblr post attached! I would have gone into a bit more in-depth analysis if I had the time, but it's currently a lot later than I would usually stay awake, so I'm rushing a bit to get to bed.

It’s an ongoing thing amongst the members of Revolutionary Army, they even have a bet to see whoever can make their beloved leader wave that cherished white flag of surrender.

The chef makes speciality dishes, spiced to the point kitchen staff are bursting into tears at the stench of Dragon's meal and then actually do begin to weep as they watch him take a bite, hum and reach for the bottle of hot sauce.

The scouts, while having downtime on their missions, scour libraries for answers to their boss's iron tongue and indestructible gut.

One day Sabo returns triumphant from a mission, Koala greets him as she always does (half crying and half beating his ass) when she notices him holding a wooden box close to the chest. Before she can begin to question he’s pulling her along to Dragon's office where both he and Ivankov await, a clipboard in the latter's hand. He sets down the box and clicks it open. Koala immediately reared back in horror, the mere wafting of its sent caused her eyes to burn. Inside laid a large black pepper twisting at the end like a wet lock of hair.

Dragon looks at the blonde, then at the box and gently picked the pepper by the stem. He regarded with his usual look of indifference but a sparkle of interest shined in his eyes.

“Thanatos.” Dragon grinned. “A good choice.”

Sabo nodded eagerly, tears and snot easily streaming down his face as he watched his father in rapt attention.

Dragon unhinged his jaw and swallowed the pepper whole, leaving on the gnarled stem in his hand. He chewed thoughtfully and leisurely, like he was eating something named after a guide of souls in the underworld.

The three watched with bated breath as he finally swallowed. He opened his eyes to meet their curious stares.

“It’s….okay.”

Immediately Sabo erupts in cheers while Ivankov takes note of Dragon's review, muttering something to the effect of this clearly being at least a seven. Koala…petrified doesn’t begin to explain her feelings.
