reminded me of Thanaka (Burmese face paint) which is a paste made from tree bark with antifungal and UV blocking properties. It's been used in Myanmar since the 1100s!
#i like to use physical (as opposed to chemical) sunblock since it doesn't sting your eyes as much if it gets in your eyes#but it does leave a white residue#some times when I get self conscious about this I kind of pretend in my head that I'm wearing Thanaka like these beautiful people#it makes me feel prettier even though I'm just playing pretend

My Spider-Sona I keep re-designing this guy but I feel like I’m pretty satisfied with this desgin
His name is Phyu Zar and he’s a bit tired
The yellow streaks on his face are thanaka, which is pretty much like sun screen but Burmese. The “dress” he wears is called a longyi, which is a garment worn by men and women commonly in Myanmar. The hat is also, your typical straw hat, except 100% fancier or so.
Yeah 🍷(^_^o) thanks for looking by!
#my art#spiderman oc#into the spider verse#he’s Burmese/Arankanese#btw#oc#across the spiderverse#spidersona#spiderman#he’s also a bit gay#atsv#I wish for more representation of my country

Kenzo Amour
Noses: Daphne Bugey and Olivier Cresp
notes: rice, white tea; frangipani, cherry blossom, heliotrope; vanilla, incense, musk, thanaka wood
Kenzo Amour is a straightforward gooey rice pudding fragrance, powerful and sweet.
Ironically, given the “Asian-inspired” marketing campaign, it’s maybe the ultimate in lactonic (milky) scents that put dairy front and center.
Despite my well-known distaste for sweet gourmands, I find Amour surprisingly lovable; the milkiness is comforting, and the powdery heliotropin makes it stop short a half notch from the over-rich dessert zone and remind you it’s a perfume.
If you’re looking for a canonical, real-deal sweet milky vanilla comfort scent, this is the one.

Kayan Lahwi / Padaung
A subgroup of the Karenni / Red Karen people.
One of the recognised ethnic groups that make up the Hill Tribes of Thailand. They are an ethnic minority of Myanmar, (formally known as Burma.)
The women are famous for wearing brass neck rings (historically copper and gold were used) which give the appearance of elongating their necks.
It is common to see women and children using thanaka paste on their faces, especially the cheeks and nose.
It can be rubbed on or drawn on in elaborate shapes.
As well as being considered attractive, it provides some protection from the sun.

Thanaka - A Traditional Burmese Skin Care Product
Thanaka is one of the essential ingredients in traditional Burmese cosmetics and skin care. Native to Burma’s arid central region, the perennial trees traditionally matured 35 years or more before their bark and root were considered to have practical cosmetic use. Today’s thanaka cultivation operations proceed on an expedited timeframe, with trees providing a quality product after only three to seven years of growth.
While the trees used to create a paste-making powder varied from region to region, the most common is hesperethusa crenulata. Depending on the region, common names of hesperethusa crenulata include thanaka, theethee, and wood apple. Logs of the thanaka tree are common in Burmese markets and range from an inch to six inches in diameter. The use of thanaka as a beauty ingredient extends at least 2,000 years, as attested to by stone grinding slabs at ancient archaeological sites. The first written record of thanaka is found in a 14th-century Burmese poem.
According to Burmese tradition, making thanaka paste involves grinding a log of thanaka tree, with the bark still attached, on a kyauk pyin. This stone slab comes in various sizes and is often around the size of a small pizza. The log is wetted with water and rubbed against the stone, which produces a paste for facial application. This paste is runny and colorless until it starts to dry on the skin when it takes on a rich and golden hue.
Those considering grinding the paste on their own should note that significant elbow grease is involved. Today’s consumers often purchase thanaka as a dry powder, which they add water to, or as an already prepared paste.
Applying thanaka is a simple process that starts with adding a thin layer over the entire face and neck, as when applying daily moisturizer. On top of this, one applies a thicker layer focused on the forehead, nose, and cheeks, which are most susceptible to sun exposure. Ideally, this is accomplished by a single stroke against the skin with a past-covered finger, much as when finger painting.
The use of thanaka is not limited to women: parents often apply it to children’s faces, and some men wear it as sun protection. Other types of makeup typically do not supplant thanaka but are worn to complement the traditional cosmetic. While Burmese boys often stop having thanaka applied at around age 10, the daily use throughout their younger years helps avoid issues of childhood sun damage and leads to smoother, healthier skin as an adult.
Thanaka’s traditional uses extend to various medicines for stomachaches and even purgatives. With antibacterial properties, it’s used as an insect repellent that can help prevent the spread of malaria. It’s also commonly used in acne treatment and prevention. The vitamin E present in thanaka gives it anti-fungal properties, while the Tyrosinase enzyme enables melatonin synthesis, which improves complexion and brightens the skin.

I bought thanaka powder at an herb shop and did a face mask and now I feel thoroughly and refreshingly degreased. May have to do this a couple times a week.
