i didnt watch stream today but ive seen twitter talking about it...... i think its really interesting seeing peoples reactions to scar not thinking hes attractive. prefacing this by saying yeah he IS attractive i wont him so bad. but i think a lot of physically disabled people (especially those with visible disabilites, e.g. a wheelchair, a breathing tube) do think of themselves as lesser in a way? especially with the popularity of someone like scar, where people constantly draw a character very similar to you as either not disabled at all or with different, "lesser" aids, such as a cane.

There’s something so intimate with seeing another disabled person in public. I was walking down the street with a friend to a cafe, my red cane in hand. Coming down from the opposite street was a young women with her friend. I saw her bedazzled cane, covered in stickers and art then looked up to her eyes. She had been looking at my cane, covered head to toe in stickers, before looking up to me. We both smiled and kept walking.But with no words spoken there was a message.

“You’re just like me. We are both here, living our lives, walking with a friend like everyone else. We exist, not just online but here in person, we are not alone.”

Hi just saw the cane ask, as someone who actually has to use a cane for joints + will be using it with my Link costume to the ren faire the ask just made me way more hyped for both Legend using one and just the idea of a sword in one hand and a kneecapper in the other. played the game ok boomer at my family party today, ended up explaining to a room of ~20 of my relatives what fanfiction is so they could understand the question, “in fanfiction, what does AU stand for?”. and then the card’s definition of “AU” was wrong so i also had to get into the concept of “canon”.

can u believe. in front of my whole family. a room full of people, aged 3 to 80. all staring at me intently as i explain the difference between an alternate universe and canon divergence. at one point my mom was like “daina i think we get it” and a cousin and two aunts were like “wait no we’re interested please continue” and i had to say to my own mother in front of god and my i am kenough sweatshirt “sorry but unlike you the rest of them DON’T have to listen to me talk about fanfiction on the regular”. my uncle is a retired judge. my one cousin worked for the federal government in a job that was so classified that for years he literally couldn’t legally tell us about ANYTHING he was working on. and today those men sat and patiently listened to me define “coffee shop AU”.

also, not one, not two, but THREE of the answers for the young folks, i knew solely because they were either plot points on stranger things or they were things i found out whilst reading stranger things fanfics. and then i was the only person in our age bracket (10 people, ranging from ages 9 to 42) that knew who anne rice was, and had to explain yet again that the reason i had this knowledge was because… fanfic.

it was surreal. also my aunt, aged 68, may or may not begin attempting to read fanfic now because, according to her, “there are so many stories where there are these small side characters and i’d just KILL to hear their backstory or like what was going through their minds during the main action!” i’m very happy for her. today was wild.

I was wondering what the reaction would be to the ‘Royal We’ joke!!! I am loving your reactions to Loop. I am more than okay with a character being condescending towards me if I find it funny, so it’s pretty interesting seeing Loop’s first interaction actually having the intended effect… rather than my immediate desire to draw them.

We rarely take well to condescension. It's part of why we choose to take on this persona, rather than something more "casual" - we rarely take kindly to anyone attempting to position themself over us, and this sort of semi-formal syntax both allows us to set ourself up as, at the very least, someone who won't take kindly to being talked down to - in addition to the fact that it lets us at least attempt to illustrate our thoughts in detail. Loop is immediately rubbing our setae the wrong way, and though we're certain they have some redeeming features, we find it difficult to see them at the moment. There's only room for one all-knowing asshole in this room, and that all-knowing asshole is us.

Their design is very cool. It was very fun to draw, despite the difficulty of doing negative-space sharp edges in watercolor. Very unfortunate that the one to bear such a well-designed body should be such a dick. Their personality doesn't live up to the hype. Give off the vibes of the sort of person who would have tried to Help Us by taking the handles of our wheelchair when we were using one. We do not think that we could productively coexist with them in a physical space. We are having difficulty productively coexisting with them in a digital, fake one.

You mean lots of people can do evil things?? How fascinating! How new! How unheard of! That completely erases any and all need to try and understand our past, doesn't it. That makes everything that's ever happened okay and not worth examining. Evil is so pervasive that we just don't need to fight it, ever, at all, because if we can't approach a situation by separating people into good and bad categories along lines of ethnicity or nationality, then it's just too complex to think about. It's better to go on without examining our prejudices, because other people are prejudiced too, so prejudice is now a cool and good thing!
