bit of an insane take i'm aware but i do firmly believe that the trend of meta moral guilttrips contributed at least a little bit to people thinking that consuming certain media and doing so in specific ways is somehow activism
#vtxt#either that or they were warnings#litmus tests even#of finding out which kinds of people are capable of critical thinking#like i love meta games as much as the next guy but at the end of the day they're nothing but code#no choosing genocide in undertale does not make you some kind of great ontological evil#like you can ilterally reset the game there's no harm in killing pixels for shits and giggles#in universe i understand *why* they acted like that like it makes sense they'd try to guilttrip you#i just wish the players who were so rabid in insisting other people never did the genocide route understood why as well#or at the very least understood that the game isn't real and that hurting real people is several hundred times worse#than hurting fictional ones

Keep scrolling if you blame Spider
Spider, who is literally still a child by human standards.
Spider, who never gave away Jake's or the Omatikaya's location.
Spider, who cares about the Sullys' safety over his own.
Spider, who didn't want any blood on his hands or a guilty conscience if he left someone to die.
Spider, who just didn't want anyone else to get hurt.
Spider, who never betrayed the Na'vi (unlike Jake but hey, who's counting that, right?)
Spider, who had to fend for himself to survive the toughest events because he didn't have an adult who would tear the world apart for him like the Sully children do.
Spider, who loves Pandora and Eywa.
Spider, who just wanted to be one of Her children because he never knew what it was like for a mother to love him.
Spider, who probably understands Eywa's whole "balance of life" meaning more than others.
Spider, who already lost Neteyam but he couldn't afford to lose anyone else in his life, no matter how terrible they are as a person.
Spider, who helped Jake save Kiri and Tuk when everyone else was still too shocked to move.
Spider, who chose mercy over violence/death.
Spider, who did what he could to survive (I'd like to see how YOU would react under such pressure. It all seems obvious and easy watching from the other side of the screen, right?)
Spider, who was likely being misled, brainwashed, and gaslit by the Recoms.
Spider, who is clearly a victim but hey, let's blame him for simply being a decent human being, right?
Spider, who likely thought he owed Quaritch after he saved him from being tortured.
Spider, who likely thought he owed Quaritch for giving him life.
Spider, who just wanted a father who was proud of him.
Spider, who has been clearly neglected by the heroes (Jake and Neytiri) but doesn't openly or verbally blame them.
Spider, who doesn't purposely threaten children's lives like Quaritch and Neytiri do.
Spider, who just wanted to be one of the People.
Spider, who wouldn't have made those difficult choices had he been properly loved and raised.
Spider, who is as easy to blame as Lo'ak for endangering the people they love (but again, no one's counting, right?)
Spider, who is clearly not a villain, just misunderstood.
Spider, who wasn't raised by the village but didn't burn it down to feel its warmth because he's not petty, not vindictive, not evil, and not a killer.
Spider, who is. A. Child.
#i am sick of seeing the exact same comments on tiktok#sick and tired of always see “its spiders fault”#like what???#no one blames jake for betraying the na'vi but think what he did was better than what spider did#thats fucking crazy#ppl holding the labeled heroes up on a pedestal but forget that spider was literally the one who sunk that ship#ppl praising jake and neytiri for the same things they blame spider for#i hope no one is out there bullying jack champion for portraying a fictional character they simply dont like cause “its his fault”#and yes i understand neytiri went through a lot of trauma and pain#that doesnt excuse harming a child to harm his father#neytiri deserves love and support but so does spider#everyone who says otherwise is a hypocrite#neytiri didnt need to have to stoop to quaritch's level and hurt a child but she did#i hope at least kiri holds her accountable in the future because i would resent my mom for hurting someone i loved#spider avatar#atwow spider#spider soccoro#miles spider socorro#avatar 2#avatar the way of water#atwow#avatar 2009#avatar#james cameron avatar#james cameron#miles quaritch#neytiri te tskaha mo'at'ite#jake sully#neytiri sully#no one blames lo'ak for getting his siblings captured BOTH times but ppl will blame spider for letting his father live is crazy

being obsessed with yakumo is a job and baby i’ve never called in a sick day!!!!!
#nu carnival#yakumo ♡#you could not pay me to ramble this extensively about anything else#but yakumo’s trauma?? his childhood?? his growth?? his fears and insecurities and how they affect his current relationships??#his abandonment issues and jealousy and darker desires???#and how he’s so scared he’ll hurt others even though it’s far more likely he’ll be the one getting hurt??#how he’s not violent or scary at all but after years and years he’s been conditioned to think he is??#the significance of his relationship with eiden??#the significance of his ‘platonic’ relationships with the other clan members??#how important his grandparents were in raising him??#how his desperate want to hide his serpentine features and be ‘normal’ is a perfect allegory for autism??#the fact that he’s been treated horribly in the past and yet still chooses every day to be kind??#how he probably definitely has bpd??#the burden he has to carry just because of who his ancestor is??#the fact that it almost seems like what he does doesn’t matter because the actions of his ancestor will always be looming over him??#how he’s been hurt so many times both physically and emotionally and yet his heart is still so open to loving others??#how he has a tendency to push down his traumatic memories until he thinks they no longer affect him??#and how even when he’s suffering because of that trauma he would still rather suffer alone than bother someone and tell them??#how slowly but surely he’s unlearning all of the harmful ideas burned into him since his was a child??#and how he’s learning that people do love and care about him and he’s not a burden and he deserves love and care??#and that the serpentine traits he tries so desperately to hide aren’t as disgusting as he was meant to believe??#that his dark desires don’t define or control him and that it’s okay that he has them??#that just because he has them at all doesn’t make him a bad person???#why he makes soup for his loved ones so much!!!! yes that is important actually#i will sit and write about that for hours and hours for FREE#my favourite fictional character of all time he’s so so real#he’s so well written and his trauma and growth are handled with such care and consideration

Can you expand on what you mean by Baron being "too cool" to really fit a horror monster? It's a very interesting concept and I'd love to hear your thoughts. Is it that they're too active/involved/tangible and it detracts from their scariness?
I feel like I should preface this with a wall of disclaimers lmao 1/I am a hardcore, down-to-the-marrow, avid, deeply sincere horror enthusiast, esp. horror creatures. this usually means my mileage is vastly different from the average populace's, and my scaredy bone has been disintegrated by longterm exposure. most things in a piece of horror media won't scare me! so I practically never use that on its own as the scale to talk abt horror experiences, but when something does scare me it's always a special occasion to be treasured. 2/canon d20 is never really meant to be horror horror, and for good reasons: it doesn't fit the company's output, it takes a kind of carelessness in production estimation that is always a huge risk, it's often vulnerable in a way that kinda goes against how TTRPGs usually facilitates vulnerability, and for most people it's just! stressful! d20, even with the "horror-themed" seasons, generally just plays with horror tropes and stays focused in its goal of being a comedy improv tabletop theater show. 3/fantasy high's chosen system is DnD, which as I've mentioned before is before all a combat-based game system, which means the magic circle of play is drawn based on stats that facilitate and prioritize combat. want or not this affects every interaction you have in the game, and given fantasy high's concept from the ground up (everyone's going to school of DnD stuff to get better at DnD) it's doubly relevant. 4/This Is Fine I have no quarrel with this. my meters are internal, I do not ask this show to be anything it doesn't advertise itself to be, and what it is is fucking great! I like it! when I expand on this ask's question it will be like a physicist going insane in a lab. that's the mindset we're going in with.
disclaimers done. my stance on horror as a genre is that it's a utility genre rather than a content genre or a demographic genre; it is the discard of narratives. it's the trash pile. horror, above being scary, is about being ugly and messy, it's the cracks on the ground any story inevitably steps over to stay a genre that isn't horror. the genre's been around long enough to develop a codex and a general language that medias and makers and enthusiasts of the genre can use to talk about and build onto, but if you go into individual pieces there's really no unifying Horror Story. one person's beautiful life can be another's horror story, it's just how it is.
this makes The Monster a deeply intriguing piece of the genre. thing is a monster is in a decent percentage of any story - it's just when the antagonist force steps into something past a certain line traced out in the story's world. monstrousness is in pretty much every western fantasy story, it's in any story with a hero and something to vanquish or win; more than anything it's a proxy of that thing up there. the line in a narrative's world. the monster is the guard of the unknown lands, where heroic, civilized people don't tread.
what does this mean in the context of horror? the genre is about that perceived lawlessness, that "unknown land" so to say. we're in the monster's home. that's the literary context that we often walk into a horror piece with; the monster knows more than you about where you are. it may not understand you, but it holds more information than you, and with that it moves swifter than you, has more covered than you, and is more assured in its existence in this context than you. it's a struggle to catch up to it, it's nigh impossible to get one over it, and you're never sure it'll 100% work, because you just don't have the information necessary to.
with that framing you can kinda see where I'm coming from here: horror's often about the breaking of rules. I always think a monster's most effective when it breaks well-established rules of both existence and visual storytelling. think Possum (2018) or Undertale's Omega Flowey or the Xenomorph Queen - unique change in medium, unique change in graphic, unique change in design language, etc. in that sense I actually really like how canon baron plays out: they don't really function like anything else in the fantasy high universe, the bad kids have not managed to kill them when they've felled literal gods, their domain in fhjy literally introduces new mechanics to encompass their existence! from an experience design standpoint they slap mad shit. BUT! I can't help finding their character, like as a character riz (and the other bad kids, eventually) interact with, to be very... coherent? in design. this is kinda hard for me to articulate in words, it's more often a sense you get once you've looked at enough of these scrumptious fuckers, their general design and the way they show up is just kinda too clean, so to say. always kinda newly made? fresh unboxed. it, once again, makes sense for their lore - they are looking for more about themself from riz - and their function - they're an antagonist in a game experience, they're meant to be interacted with in a way that produces results and meshes with the existing magic circle - but that shininess takes away from the implied history they should have dominion over and the person they're haunting doesn't.
from another angle there is kinda something there about how put-together canon baron is as a concept; the domain they call home is riz's deep-seeded fears, extremely vulnerable things he's drawn borders around to quarantine and refused to walk into. things that from his perspective would irreversibly shatter certain pleasant fictions his world is built on top of. canon baron, While Extremely Cool, I feel is kinda too neat to connect with and signify the apocalyticized mess that'd result from this paradigm shift. the part where they're in riz's briefcase and looking through every mirror is Very Cool And Fucked Up! but ultimately the show draws a line around them as well, by making game-physical, tangible spaces they're in (the mirrors and the haunted mordred manor) and put riz and the bad kids there only when they need to confront stuff. riz is meaningfully narratively away from baron's unknown land for most of fantasy high.
with that and all of my disclaimers in mind my conclusion here is if canon baron wants to be a Horror Monster they'd have to cross way more lines. be a Lot more invasive. hence (holds up my class swap baron like a long cat)
#ask#not art#tldr a lot of fantasy high's and d20's nature plays against having a Horror horror piece in it. there's no space for emptiness or dread#that's one of the most attractive things to me about horror. the monster signifying a new world you don't understand#you see something on the deserted streets and you realize: oh. the world doesn't work how I've been thinking it does#if u've noticed how much this has in common with queer experiences haha. yeag#man. actually I should also put the I Am Not White disclaimer in there too lmao a lot of the notion of The Monstrous is! traditionally#about maintaining and upkeeping a ''social order'' (read: the powers that be)#and a Lot of Wilderness Fiction is deeply and maliciously colonialist#so when I say ''the unknown land'' and ''the monster'' I am pretty much speaking From one of those unknown lands#and from the position of one of those monsters#the fear of the monstrous is so very often the fear of being consumed by - or becoming - the monstrous yourself#and well. when you're already there in the eye of the zeitgeist. You Can Do What You Want Forever#all that to say it Is important to me that baron is made of riz's lies. even more so in this funny class swap thing I make for fun#like as a horror protag he makes me insane. he loves lines! he loves lines he drew himself. he replicates these borders in himself#that mirror the world he lives in that's so hostile to him. that kid Loves rules. he bows to even the ones that hurt him#like. u get where I'm getting to right I did make a whole comic kinda near this subject he's Already The Other#baron is a monster's monster. baron is a mirror image. GODs I cant help but wish they were messier#it's kinda why I make class swap baron to be like. an ever nearing realization. like I warble abt all this but I genuinely do also find#canon baron to be just as visually coherent and thematically perfect as riz if not more. it's hard to beat how cool the mirror stuff is#it's hard to beat that doll face in iconic visuals! I have to strike according to my strength rather than trying to beat canon#so instead of reflection it's captured moments. instead of a blank face it's the lack of one. mmm. maybe I'm just kinda breaking things#for fun also but that's My prerogative in my house awooga <3#well. thats kinda my thoughts on the general subject. thank u for listening. I will bake something soon dyou want some

Wanted to send an ask as well to hopefully provide some distraction from…recent events.
Are there any parts of world building in the TF IDW universe that you wish were explored/expanded upon more? Or that you want to explore in your writing? Like certain aspects of pre-war Cybertron, cybertronian culture, post-war Cybertron, etc?
Okay this is actually perfectly timed for a rant I wanted to go on about the way mnemosurgery is written in IDW1 because I hate how JRO basically made it an ontologically evil field of medicine both intrinsically and in terms of the average person who does it, like
First of all I want to preface this by saying I'm not accusing JRO of having any particular beliefs, this is just my commentary on how things came off and how his writing style contributes to both virtues and flaws in his writing. So I might say "he's basically saying this" but in the sense of "unfortunate implications, accidental or purposeful, in his writing."
But like... it makes me so mad because the worldbuilding around mnemosurgery kind of makes no sense to me? It seems like a really fucking wasted opportunity to cast basically every mnemosurgeon in the continuity as evil and to make it so that even just doing mnemosurgery is basically a toxic, destructive act that will literally kill you? Honestly, I don't think JRO even came up with mnemosurgery as like, "here's a thing that exists in this world and how it works" so much as, he took a character-first approach to writing (as he always does) and wrote mnemosurgery to work whatever way would work best for Chromedome and other character-related conflicts and plot points.
Like, mnemosurgery can view/alter memories from a living person but from a dead person it can only get moments from right before death. Makes sense. Mnemosurgery slowly kills you every time you do it??? Uh... honestly that comes off more as a handwave to make it so that any time the LL needs information they can't just needle it straight out of whoever's mind they need bc of course Chromedome can only do it when it's really important after all. Mnemosurgery... is only ever used for brainwashing people? Like, literally every mnemosurgeon except Chromedome is evil (and cartoonishly so, for Trepan and Sunder, like literally unredeemable monsters in every way) and any time they actually enjoy their field of medicine it's bc they're a sadist that likes to manipulate and oppress people? Kind of... uncreative.
Mnemosurgery is ADDICTIVE?? You're addicted to needling people's brains because mnemosurgery is ontologically evil and then it literally kills you? Okay like... do I even need to explain how tone-deaf it is to incorporate addiction of all things into the worldbuilding here? "You're an addict which makes you dangerous to society. The good ones stop doing the addictive thing because they're morally strong/care about others/aren't hedonists, but the bad ones who only care about doing their drug of choice are evil because the fact that they don't quit shows that they don't care about other people and OF COURSE the main/only fate that awaits addicts is their inevitable death by their own addiction!" Like, we get enough of that shit in real life, JRO. Did you really have to take an already heavily stigmatized condition like ADDICTION and slap it onto your ontologically evil mnemosurgery where the evil ones are evil because they love abusing/manipulating people and don't care enough about dying to stop being addicted to mnemosurgery? Come the fuck on.
Like, I understand that "the science of studying/altering memories" is heavily laden with nightmare fuel as is, and I don't have a problem with that (and stuff like the Institute) because the mind/memories are an intrinsic part of personhood, so any scientific field around it (or any government that wants to sponsor it) will abuse that knowledge just like with any other field of medicine. But to use human examples, why the fuck does mnemosurgery have to be inherently evil? What about stuff like Alzheimer's that degrades ppl's memories to the point of not even remembering a few seconds ago? Wouldn't it be beautiful if mnemosurgery could help with that? What about psychological issues where maybe people with intense PTSD/trauma/etc could have their worst memories be removed/dulled so that they become mentally stable enough for psychiatric/therapeutic interventions to become effective? What if someone has a TBI and wants help recovering the memories they lost?
What about non-scary, non-medicinal applications of mnemosurgery? What if someone just really treasures the memory of a particular day with their best friend and visits a mnemosurgery every couple years so that information creep doesn't slowly alter their memories of that precious day? What if it was possible for mnemosurgeons to intensify memories, so that maybe someone could have a happy memory intensified and think of it any time they're sad, struggling, having mental health struggles, etc? What if mnemosurgeons could take/copy memories from people's brains and convert them to video format in a way that other people could watch it? Imagine the sheer potential present in that when it comes to preserving history through literal firsthand testimonials of what happened! What if a mnemosurgeon could transfer memories from one person to another-- what kinds of breakthroughs in empathy, communication, and understanding others could happen if you could LITERALLY see a conflict from another person's perspective? In those ways, mnemosurgeons would basically be able to act as a hybrid of doctor, psychologist, diplomat, mediator, and archivist all in one!
But no... instead we just got "Mnemosurgery is evil and pretty much only used for brainwashing, 99.8% of all mnemosurgeons are evil creeps, oh by the way it's also addicting and will literally kill you if you do it too much." SMFH.
#squiggle answers#meta#idk if my contempt for the addiction part comes off strongly enough. like#as it is addiction is already spun as a moral failing by ppl who only care about getting high and not about hurting themselves/others#so like. why would you take addiction and apply it as an element of worldbuilding where indulging that addiction literally makes you evil#(or rather where the only ppl who continuously indulge their addiction are evil and just like doing it)#you wanna know something? IRL more addicts get sober than die of overdoses. ODing and being addicted forever is THE MINORITY#BEING AN ADDICT DOESN'T DOOM YOU TO DYING BY YOUR OWN SUPPOSED VICES AND LACK OF SELF CONTROL#getting clean is THE NORM and not the exception! so why in the hell would you write it into your fictional story#and make it so that not only are most of these addicts evil people but they'll also all inevitably die bc of their addiction???#this sort of worldbuilding literally propagates the idea that addicts are doomed to die in the majority of cases (patently untrue)#and like frames the ppl who are addicted as basically being evil and choosing to continue needling people#that's not how real life addiction works. like at all. irl addicts don't destroy their health w drugs bc they love doing it#but yeah in general JRO kind of has this issue with black and white morality. you see it pop up everywhere in his writing#his depiction of mnemosurgery comes off as one of those trademark JRO#'here is your sign that this character is evil and unredeemable bc they do this thing that's inherently evil'#kind of things. and as someone recently getting into studying addiction as a social issue it sucks ass

I'm going to draw Taffy ship art tomorrow solely out of spite.
And perhaps post it in the server.
If I'm feeling extra petty.
#you cannot demean the one being I actually feel comfortable like. being this way with. and just think I'm going to be okay with that.#like him being fictional doesn't take away how much I care about him. you even acknowledged that before. why does it change now?#I actually feel comfortable caring about him BECAUSE I know he can't and WOULDN'T do anything to hurt me#not just can't. I know he WOULDN'T. he wouldn't WANT to hurt me. fuck you for so clearly wanting to.#just because I don't care about you.#I'm going to care about that man so hard it'll make him real and then it'll fucking kill him#just to spite you#you know what?#Nicky isn't the only person I'll say I love anymore#I'll say I love Taffy too fuck you#I love Taffy more than I ever loved you and you can suck it#I'll probably change my mind on that by tomorrow but for now I fucking LOVE Taffy#and y'know what I'm going to draw the most sickeningly sweet ship art of us tomorrow even if it kills me

the way harrow the ninth manages to convey the longing for connection that can happen not only between people, but also within an individual, when something goes wrong enough inside them. and the horror-hunger desperation and displacement of being severed from yourself that suffuses every other part of your existence, with all the repulsive rotting wrongness of stagnant water you can't get away from because the well is within your own heart and that bitch just keeps pumping away even when you wish it wouldn't bother. anyway. I love that book a normal amount
#the locked tomb#harrow the ninth#unfortunately harrow may be the most relatable protagonist in literary history. I also do not like this but here we are#this is part of what annoys me about the 'but griddlehark is not a healthy relationship!!' idea#like 1) do you think salt is too much spice in your metaphorical life. c'mon. and 2) they are fictional characters not real people!#they are metaphors as well as people that's what narrative does! they carry other meanings than just themselves!#separately and together! religious meaning psychological emotional societal political -- meaning on every axis you care to name#it's just as much a story about parts of a self struggling to come together and resolve to become coherent#in a way that doesn't hurt too bad to live with. will they do that? who knows! but that's in there beneath the surface#it's not ONLY about that but it is part of a reading one might make and there is real Stuff in there to work with#the effects of trauma are that deep in the narrative to me it leaks out everywhere it's baked in#I also want them to kiss about it but that's just because of some things that are wrong with me as a person I think

i went through this on another fandom:
if you're getting angry at a female character for showing interest in another character, especially as a game mechanic others partake in too but the woman doing it is bothersome for some reason, there's something to look at inside your head and heart.
that being said, every person who's not necessarily happy about it/a character/ship isn't a bad person. both can be true.
#you know that thing about women doing anything criticized and seeing in worst context. that can happen to fictional and real ones.#sometimes you try to protect woman in a way that circles back to being misogyny#i don't have a good way of putting it without sounding like i care more about point b than point a bc that's not ture#i saw all sorts things from both sides#but it's easy to hurt real women and people if we don't look at it calmly#i went through this exact scenario. multiple times. but this one is also reminiscent of dorian x iron bull so i'm definitely cautious#i have never learned how to spell misogyny in english#dav#dragon age veilguard

get out of the main selfship tag you pred
ctrl v much
anyway posting this in main tags again, but anon, you can always just use the safeshipping tags if you don't want to see proshippers. we aren't invading your space, it's a communal space with subgroups. that can apply to any fandom or any community, there will always be subgroups you don't like, but fortunately there's usually more specific tags that cater to you! there's also the block button if my content makes you uncomfortable in any way, and I highly suggest you use it if that is the case (though, something is telling me you didn't look at a single post i made).
Have a great day anon! /gen
And to everyone in the main tags, anti or proship, I hope you have a good day and remember: your f/os love you!
#antis can interact but please note that i am not one#also i hate kids and the concept of interacting with children in any capacity is awful#so i dont know how i could be a pred but i appreciate the gesture!#selfshipper#self shipping#self ship#op is a proshipper#selfshipping community#selfship community#self shipper#self ship blog#self ship community#self shipping community#selfshipping#selfship#gonna talk more in the tags down here: im dx'd with a paraphilic disorder#and my therapist does in fact suggest that I do this (take my fantasies out on fictional characters) rather than bottle it up#because it's hurtful to bottle up your emotions and shame yourself for your own mental illnesses and disorders#and whether youre anti or pro harassing people in your community isn't cool#if you dont like my content you can block me! tumblr is so much better if you use the block button religiously :}

"Ariel was stupid like she gave up her life in the ocean for a boy-" Well, if you actually watch the movie, before she even meets Eric, Arield shows interest in going to the surface and learning the ways of the humans. She collects artifacts and hides them, along with her trips to the surface from her father, who is prone to anger and hates her interest. He blows up her cave filled with said artifacts and bans her from ever going back to the surface (and seeing Eric, but the surface aspect and him go hand and hand). You want me to believe that you wouldn't book it at the first opportunity you got? Like yeah, the context of the deal was sketchy as hell, but when your dad is the literal ruler of all the seas you don't have many options. Also, in the sequel, Ariel is still connected to the ocean and can go back, especially after Ursula's sister dies so, in all honesty, my girl still wins in the end.
#the little mermaid#the little mermaid (2023)#tlm#tlm2#ariel#princess ariel#like the big wave of hating princesses comes up again & again but sometimes some of yall just want to hate over things that makes sense#i might make a post about cinderella too bc im tired of yall victim blaming around her all the time#ariel got her man a new life & her old life and two kingdoms? my girl was winning!#that's why she's still one of my faves#“she's not a good role model!” well not every fictional character has to be but if u want that than maybe look at how#it's important to have healthy relationships with your kids & be able to talk with them so they don't hide things & seek out dangerous peopl#prepare them for the dangers of bad people while your at it so they can avoid being hurt as much as possible (within their capabilities)#even the og message wasn't that bad: u can find love & happiness without giving up your old life or your interest#and even if you don't feel like the message was that great there's an opportunity to talk with your kids and educate them on it#maybe even see their opinions on why they might feel differently and work from there instead of calling a fictional teenage girl “stupid”

some of you never grew up in a small conservative town as a (gay) nerd that was bullied, harassed, and excluded for years on end for not fitting in and for visibly and enthusiastically liking geek things—geek things that then branded you a satanist in everyone's eyes and as something Other, Lesser, and Undoubtedly Unworthy of Basic Human Decency even though you were literally just an actual child with harmless interests and not a satanist or an evil disgusting subhuman thing, and it shows.
you cannot apply modern views and beliefs to a show that is set in the eighties, especially not when it's set in conservative midwest eighties which is a whole other beast. being a socially awkward and nonconforming geek is something that people STILL get bullied for if you don't do it in a way that the majority deems "acceptable", especially if you live in a conservative, religious area.
your experiences are not universal and your inability to relate to a certain motif or story does not make it "lesser" or "bad writing."
#stranger things#mike wheeler#<- tagging and then disappearing into the mist again bc i don't like it here lol.#girls when they love stranger things because they finally see characters just like them with the same exact experiences written with such#care and respect for those that have been Deemed Other but people who have not had those experiences refuse to believe that they're#realistic and STILL happen to people bc if they're fortunate to have not gone through that then clearly that means that it doesn't exist#and if it does then it's not Traumatic Enough or a good enough plot to cause such inner turmoil in the characters who experience that#💥🛼#i got bullied for being a nerd in the 2000s and 2010s. you can absolutely get bullied for being a nerd and being a nerd is enough reason#for social exile in some places. when dustin said that no one was nice to him or mike? when lucas said that girls laughed at them? and it's#all because they're deemed freaks and satanists for liking fantasy things? that's Real and it doesn't hurt any less just because you think#it's not a good enough reason to bully someone.#i was called a satanist to my face by adults. people acted like i was some Creature or whatever just because i liked fiction and wasn't#interested in what the majority was interested in and wore dark clothing sometimes. like.. hello. school shooter jokes? the way#that neurodivergent people get treated when they're visibly ''different'' and enjoy things passionately? the way that liking star wars was#a thing to ridicule until it suddenly became Acceptable and Popular to like? i feel like i'm living in a different reality than so many#people here with the way that they talk about certain things in this show. and don't even get me started on the way people approached#the angela and el situation....#maybe just be glad that these things did not happen to you and stop acting like it's lesser or a bad story bc of that? just a thought.

watching Astarion break up scenes on youtube because I'm not strong enough to do that myself, and OUCH.
#bg3#astarion#he's just so upset!#the ones where he's mad are less painful than when he's just like 'of course. this was inevitable.'#he's just someone who believed that no one could ever really love him#and it proves him right#it hurts me deeply inside#sitting here on the couch weeping about a fictional man again

i fear my heart will always go to and for the fictional boy that so desperately wants the girl but still respects her choice at the end of the day even when the blatant rejection verbally kills him, sweetest male characters ever are the only ones that get that storyline and it makes me actually go insane thinking about it - bc you just know no one would have major problems with them if they weren’t a part of a damn “love triangle” that shouldn’t be considered one-
daniel miller from every witch way and jacob black in twilight are the main reasons for falling for them + for that trope and it’ll most likely continue if my patterns and who i love in books, films and tv series continues
#the only exception to this rule was marco/ levi in the kissing booth films and books#let’s add jeremiah fisher into the mix as well bc oh my god that one stings and i’m not even team jeremiah#normalize letting people feel freely about fictional characters bc some takes i see online are insane#it’s also perplexing because normally i’m not even shipping them with the main love interest- i despise bella and jacob as a ship#i get hurt and upset for them and want to take them all away from the setting and situation they’re in#i was a team daniel girl though- still stand by it#daniel and emma will forever be my nick endgame idc about the end of s3 or the entirety of s4 (which was a big mess)#daniel and emma are my exception because they dated first and still had feelings for one another after the breakup#but other than that#i am an anti shipper for my favs whoops#and i can not stand jeremiah and belly together bc she can’t see anyone the way she does conrad#so it’d be ridiculous to ship them bc there’s no point in them when she’s so obsessed with his brother let’s be so brutally honest

I've never liked this feeling.
This feeling I've felt since I was 13. A yearning, a need to be loved. Yes, I know I'm loved by so many people who came, stayed, and left, but this ache is something that real people cannot heal.
Is this the curse of being in love with so many fictional characters? To long for their existence, to wish they were real, to touch and see them. It's something I can never get rid of.
I thought if I grew old enough, that pain would go away. But no. It stayed, and it even grew with me. The longing has become stronger, and I can't ignore it anymore.
Why must I be cursed with love for different artforms? To fall for every character my eyes laid eyes on?
- (mind blurb)
#lazyyy thoughts#i can't tag every fandom I've appreciated through the years#but it's so many I can't even remember some of them#yes this is a constant feeling#the way it eats me inside and I wake up lonely even tho I'm currently loved#it's so stupid but it burns so much of my soul to even think that somehow maybe these characters have a real person counterpart? you know?#idk#I'm tired of this feeling but I keep on nurturing it everytime because I would rather adore a fictional man than a real one.#they can't hurt me like how real people do.#maybe it's a coping mechanism idk#bye

"This show is SO good, you should watch it!!"
I gotta be honest. If I look at a character list on Wikipedia and get five characters down without seeing a single woman, it's probably not for me.
#I have no patience for 'there is exactly one woman in the main/supporting cast' anymore#unless the writing is INCREDIBLE and the themes are explored with a type of depth and nuance I can't get anywhere else (like shiki)#(daily media plug for shiki)#then I just. probably will not vibe with it. if there are no women. (also shiki DOES have interesting female characters in it)#and this isn't to say that like. things involving men or talking about men or that have a male protagonist are Not Worth#My Time that is NOT what I'm saying at all. I just want like. several women. who show up and affect the story. like LITERALLY that is all I#am asking for. I feel like that's just. the bare minimum. but alas.#mel screams about fictional ladies again#there are plenty of things that are male-character-focused that I enjoy and even genuinely think are good! but I do want people to#ask themselves why they aren't willing to go to bat for media that DOES have more women in the cast than men.#(I mean. the answer is misogyny. but I want people to be. aware of that. and evaluate accordingly)#(evaluate meaning 'acknowledge I have some biases I need to continue deconstructing' not 'drop interest in everything tumblr#user musical-chick-13 personally doesn't like')#I feel like so many times we get trapped in this space between overcorrection via 'don't like ANYTHING that's pRoBLeMaTiC in ANY way'#and people taking the 'it's fiction it's not that deep' to the conclusion of 'because I cannot actually hurt fictional characters because#they're not real that means I am incapable of hurting irl people when they talk about those characters'#like there is. nuance here. there is a middle ground. and most people have NO interest in finding it lmao#and like...if you carry your biases from irl (which EVERYONE HAS. INCLUDING ME. COURTESY OF LIVING IN A PREJUDICED SOCIETY.) into a#direct and one-to-one evaluation of stories or characters that allow you to exercise those biased ideas. then that reinforces those biases#like. no hating...for example every anime lady isn't the same as structural misogyny like the pay gap or anti-women violence#but if you automatically associate the idea of 'female character' with 'lesser-than' it strengthens the already-present societal idea that#women are not as important or dynamic or worthy of support and attention as their male peers. if you are willing to see every (white)#fictional man as having interiority and depth but struggle to see that in any fictional woman then it adds to the things society is already#telling us about women. it creates an association of 'women' with 'inferiority' and uh. that's what misogyny is.#it is not the same as misogynistic crimes against irl women but it IS a reflection of the rhetoric and societal impulses that lead to them#and even if it's a reflection and not the actual thing. it's still important to break down and examine and reevaluate because#if we don't examine our OWN biases. then even if we tear down the greater oppressive structure we'll just end up building it back up again#no your thousands of words of m/m fanfiction or liking late 2000s shonen anime isn't responsible for misogyny nor are these things#inherently misogynistic. I just want like. some acknowledgement that something being 'for fun' doesn't automatically mean that bias/#prejudice is nowhere to be found
