"Ariel was stupid like she gave up her life in the ocean for a boy-" Well, if you actually watch the movie, before she even meets Eric, Arield shows interest in going to the surface and learning the ways of the humans. She collects artifacts and hides them, along with her trips to the surface from her father, who is prone to anger and hates her interest. He blows up her cave filled with said artifacts and bans her from ever going back to the surface (and seeing Eric, but the surface aspect and him go hand and hand). You want me to believe that you wouldn't book it at the first opportunity you got? Like yeah, the context of the deal was sketchy as hell, but when your dad is the literal ruler of all the seas you don't have many options. Also, in the sequel, Ariel is still connected to the ocean and can go back, especially after Ursula's sister dies so, in all honesty, my girl still wins in the end.
#the little mermaid#the little mermaid (2023)#tlm#tlm2#ariel#princess ariel#like the big wave of hating princesses comes up again & again but sometimes some of yall just want to hate over things that makes sense#i might make a post about cinderella too bc im tired of yall victim blaming around her all the time#ariel got her man a new life & her old life and two kingdoms? my girl was winning!#that's why she's still one of my faves#“she's not a good role model!” well not every fictional character has to be but if u want that than maybe look at how#it's important to have healthy relationships with your kids & be able to talk with them so they don't hide things & seek out dangerous peopl#prepare them for the dangers of bad people while your at it so they can avoid being hurt as much as possible (within their capabilities)#even the og message wasn't that bad: u can find love & happiness without giving up your old life or your interest#and even if you don't feel like the message was that great there's an opportunity to talk with your kids and educate them on it#maybe even see their opinions on why they might feel differently and work from there instead of calling a fictional teenage girl “stupid”

fantasy faire || yoon jeonghan
summary: [apart of the seventeen stars to the right series] jeonghan figures babysitting his niece at disneyland can’t be that bad, but it definitely gets better when he finds out you’re the cast member assisting his niece’s favorite princess, cinderella.
genre: fluff, cutie uncle!jeonghan || wc: 2.3k
a/n: yes I did take too long to post this and yes I did go overboard... i’m sorry
I’m definitely the only college kid that has to spend their Saturdays like this, Jeonghan thinks to himself for the second time that month. When he had spent all those nights in high school imagining the crazy parties and wild events he’d attend on his Saturdays in college, there was never any 4 year old niece involved, and definitely no Disneyland either. Yet here he was, his right pointer and middle fingers wrapped tightly around his niece’s hand as she tugs him towards the opening gates of the amusement park. Despite the fact that he did want to go out day drinking with his friends like normal college students did, he also couldn’t complain too much. A free year pass to Disneyland and getting paid just to spend the day with his niece every week? There’s worse things to do on a Saturday.
Still, Jeonghan curses his need for money in the back of his head when a mere 15 seconds after stepping into the park his niece won’t stop begging him to go to the Royal Hall, of all places. “Uncle Hannie pleaseee you told me last time that you’d let me meet Cinderella!” He tries not to groan at the way his niece looks up at him, eyes pleading and much too big for his dwindling resolve.
“Why do you want to go there?! Don’t you want to, like, ride Space Mountain or something?” Jeonghan complains to her as they walk down Main Street, wearing matching Mickey and Minnie Disney ears while weaving through the overwhelming crowds of families and couples.
His niece lets out a whine just as they pass some teenager asking her parents for pictures in front of the castle, “I want to meet Cinderella! She’s my favorite! Uncle Hannie pleaseee!” Her walking halts and she begins to stomp her feet in protest. “You’re such a meanie, you told me last time we came that we would see Cinderella and the time before that and the first time and-”
“Fine!” Jeonghan thought he was first at a lot of things in life, but his niece definitely has him beat in the whining and persistence departments, “We can go see Cinderella at the Royal Hall, but only once today okay? We’re not going over and over again.”
His niece pouts, but doesn’t complain further as she makes her way to the left where the hall was located. Disneyland was always fun - it was Disneyland - but Jeonghan wishes he could enjoy it to it’s full potential rather than being dragged around to visit people in costumes and watching the same shows over and over again.
-----
The boy watches as his niece makes small conversation with the cast member dressed as Ariel. They had to wait in line for 45 minutes to get into the meet and greet and his niece only looks half amused when the princess asks her if she’s met any new fish friends lately. Jeonghan doesn’t say much during their interaction aside from taking a few pictures to show his aunt later and thanking the cast members for their time.
Almost immediately after Ariel bids her goodbyes, the little girl goes taking off around the corner, calling out a, “Cinderelly Cinderelly!” in excitement. Jeonghan rushes to keep up, and right as he rounds the corner himself he sees his niece happily jumping into the arms of the woman dressed in blue.
He already knows this is going to take twice as long as Ariel’s meet and greet did; his niece is already spewing off about how she wants her own castle with a mouse named Gus Gus and a carriage shaped like a pumpkin. With a slight puff Jeonghan makes his way to stand next to the cast attendant with Cinderella and for the first time today it’s his heart that goes pumping with excitement.
You stand next to the pillar with a smile watching the interaction between the princess and Jeonghan’s niece. You loved your job of attending to the princesses at the Royal Hall - the way a few magical minutes in someone’s day always makes the tiring hours more than worth it. You beam as Jeonghan’s niece claps her hands while speaking to Cinderella, questioning her on whether or not the King and Queen of the kingdom forced her to eat broccoli, too.
Since starting your job at Disneyland, there were many days where you and your favorite coworker would talk after a shift to discuss the cute guys that would funnel in and out of the parks. Turning to look at the man who came into your area with the little girl, you knew today would be one of those days. “Is she your sister?” You decide to ask, you know, for good measure. He technically looked old enough to have a child around the girl’s age, but you learned the hard way it’s better not to assume.
“Niece,” He answers with a small smile once he settles next to you. Jeonghan lets a few moments pass as he watches his niece happily bounce next to the princess, but in the corner of his eye he’s watching you. You were probably one of the cutest people he’s ever seen - if not the cutest. Knowing he only has a limited amount of time before the family on the other side of the wall moves on to get their meeting with Cinderella, the man attempts to strike up a conversation, “My sister makes me bring her to Disneyland every Saturday.”
“Every Saturday?!” Your eyes get wide, turning to fully face the man, “Did you have to buy an annual pass for that?”
“Nah, they pay for it.” The boy decides to face you completely in response while rubbing his fingers together, “My sister married well.” For a split second he wonders if he should’ve lied and said he did pay for it all himself - to impress you or something.
Your mouth opens to reply, but you’re quickly distracted when you catch the two girls posing for a picture. Despite your desire to talk to the cute guy, you know you’re technically still on the clock, so you cut the conversation in favor of taking pictures of his niece with her favorite princess. Jeonghan decides to do the same and pulls out his phone for pictures, but really, his attention is on you the entire time.
-----
When his niece first begged to meet Cinderella, Jeonghan fully prepared to tell her every week following that they can’t go the Royal Hall for whatever made up reason and somehow convince her to go on a ride instead.
However, with the thought of you, the cute cast member replaying on his mind like a loop, he doesn’t complain for a second when his niece asks to see the princess in blue. In fact, it’s become a habit to head straight to the left whenever they enter the parks. Sometimes Jeonghan even takes his niece through the meet and greet twice if she behaves well (but she doesn’t really have to do anything. He just wants an excuse to see you again).
With their new routine in play, you and Jeonghan become more and more familiar with each other. You learn each other’s names, where the two of you go to school, and even things as in depth as Jeonghan’s love for basketball and the story of how you came to work for Disney. He figures out that your shift ends at 3pm every Saturday and he always seems to make it at least once before you’re off. Coming to Disneyland goes from babysitting his niece to borderline using the little girl as an excuse to talk to you. The bond you two create is simple, and definitely unexpected from your job of working with families and couples more often than not, but it’s special; even magical in a way.
So when Jeonghan’s niece makes a move to go right instead of left one Spring Saturday, Jeonghan nearly gets whiplash, “What are you doing? Don’t you want to go to the Royal Hall?”
To his surprise, the little girl shakes her head and points towards Tomorrowland, “Can we try Space Mountain instead?”
For once in his life, Jeonghan is rendered speechless. His niece never turned down an opportunity to go see her favorite princess. He does nothing but blink at her for a bit, trying to understand her sudden fixation with the opposite end of the park, until he’s pulled back to reality by her tugging on his hand again, “Do you want to see Cinderella later, then?”
Jeonghan’s okay with going on the ride first - as long as they get into the Royal Hall by 3pm. “No,” His niece suddenly answers and the boy can only imagine how high his eyebrows raise, “I don’t really like Cinderella anymore.”
“You what?!” Jeonghan drops down to the girl’s eye level to shake her shoulders dramatically, “What do you mean you don’t like Cinderella?! She’s your favorite!”
“Not anymore, I watched Frozen yesterday and Elsa’s dress is prettier. She’s my favorite now!” He’s sure this could go in a Youtube compilation of Top 10 Anime Betrayals, “I wanna go see Elsa today instead!”
“Screw Elsa!” Jeonghan forgets for a second just where he is, catching a middle aged mom in the corner of his eye covering her daughter’s ears. Clearing his throat and bringing his tone down, he continues, “You like Cinderella, okay? When we get back to your house later tonight we can watch all the Cinderella movies and I’ll even buy you a doll today! But we're not going to see Elsa! We’re seeing Cinderella!”
The small girl, as expected, isn’t very happy with his demands. She begins to stomp and whine like that first day he took her to meet the princess, and although she got the best of him that time, it’s not happening today. “Why can’t we see Elsa?!”
“Because-” Jeonghan pauses to bring his voice down once again, “Cinderella’s friend is really, really cute, okay? And Uncle Hannie really wants to get their phone number. So, we’re going to see Cinderella and later on when Cinderella’s cute friend doesn’t have to work anymore we can go see Elsa, I promise.” With his pinky stretched out, he’s hoping his explanation suffices. His niece was young and maybe she won’t understand just how desperately he wants those two or three minutes with you every week; but it’s worth a shot.
For a second, she does nothing but stare at his outstretched hand, almost as if she’s weighing her options. Then, with a small smile, she lifts her small hand to meet his and hooks their pinkies together, “Okay.”
-----
Today, Cinderella is placed at the end of the Royal Hall, and Jeonghan’s sure that his niece knows exactly what she’s doing when she nearly flies through the first two princesses with little to no conversation. He decides not to point it out though, and just goes through the routine of taking a picture and thanking the workers.
Jeonghan wonders how the interaction between his niece and Cinderella will go; will she pretend to be interested? Will she tell Cinderella that she’s found a new favorite? Or, worst of all: will she take nearly no time with the princess, and Jeonghan will be forced to talk to you for less than a second before having to leave?
Surprisingly, his niece does none of the three. Without even sparing Cinderella a glance, she immediately marches over to you standing in your usual spot against the pillar and says, “My Uncle thinks you’re cute.”
Silence. Jeonghan, despite being a naturally confident guy, doesn’t know what to do when you look up from his niece with an amused smile. Even Cinderella seems to lose character for a few moments when she slaps her hand over her mouth to conceal her laugh. Before Jeonghan can open his mouth to redeem himself, you look back down at his niece, “Oh? Does he?”
“Yes! I told Uncle Hannie I wanted to meet Elsa today but he made me come here because he said you’re really cute and he wants your phone number,” The girl replies and Jeonghan wonders where kids learn this stuff. “Can you give him your phone number so I can see Elsa now?”
Jeonghan sighs. This would happen to him. It’s probably karma for using his innocent niece as a way to talk to you. What is he even supposed to say now? Breaking into an awkward smile, he grabs his niece by the shoulder and shrugs, “Uh, kids, right?” Damn kids.
You laugh for a few seconds before lowering down to his niece’s level and grinning at the girl, “Tell your Uncle, that I think he’s really, really cute,” You spare a glance at the man briefly, “And that I’m flattered he’d like to get my phone number. But it’s against the Disneyland rules for me to give it to him.”
Of course it is, he thinks to himself. Leave it to the happiest place on Earth to ruin his chances with you. Jeonghan’s about to nod in understanding and motion for his niece to (very quickly) finish her meet and greet and he can stuff his face with churros for the rest of the day. But before he can make any sort of moves you continue, “However… If you and your Uncle were to see me at the castle around 3:30 after my shift today… I’m sure Mickey wouldn’t mind, right?”
“He wouldn’t!” His niece answers happily before jumping up and down, facing Jeonghan to say, “Can we see Elsa before then?!”
Chuckling (mostly to mask his sigh of relief and excitement), Jeonghan nods and points to Cinderella across the room, “Finish saying hi to Cinderella and I’ll take you to meet Elsa right after this.”
The little girl squeals in happiness before running over to the woman in blue, who he knows is giving him a knowing look. Jeonghan fits into his spot next to you, whispering through a smile, “So… churros at 3:30 then?”
You beam at him, nodding, “It’s a date.”

All the Disney Princesses Ranked From Worst to Best.
(Sorry, no Vanellope.)
14. Merida
I know Merida has really badass archery skills. She’s also outspoken, strong willed, and clever. But she’s still my least favorite princess. I just didn’t like her. Maybe it’s the fact that she wanted to change her mom. And she actually went through with it. Of course, she didn’t actually know what was going to happen, and the journey brought them closer together. She grew as a character and that’s good. But just seeing her disrespect her mother, especially publicly in front of all the clans, is hard to watch. It doesn’t help that I thought Brave was one of Pixar’s weaker movies and essentially Brother Bear all over again.
13. Anna
Not gonna lie. I hate Anna. She’s so damn pushy and combative. I know, it’s all her parents’ fault. All of it. But still. She doesn’t listen to Elsa at all. She pushes and pushes triggering Elsa’s ice outbursts, which become more visible as they build along with her anxiety. Every uncontrolled “accident” Elsa has in the first film is because Anna didn’t listen to her. Of course, she also didn’t listen to Elsa’s warning about marrying Hans either. She foolishly left the kingdom in the hands of an outsider, someone she didn’t even know.
She definitely shows improvement in the second film. She becomes more sensitive towards Elsa’s feelings and her powers. She’s also very loyal and brave, risking her life for Elsa, yet again. She’s still very clingy and desperate for people’s love. It manifests in her fear of losing Elsa and Kristoff. I do not like her humor or awkwardness. I don’t find them relatable, but rather annoying. But I do appreciate that those insecurities are real and that’s what makes her more relatable. Her relationships with the other characters, especially Olaf, is what saves her from being last on my list.
12. Tiana
There’s nothing wrong Tiana. I think she’s great. She’s hardworking, determined, and a realist. Those are great qualities that I’m glad Disney decided to focus on too. The downside of this is that she comes across as rather boring. The film relies on other more colorful characters to bring the personality and charm. I think that’s a shame. She also suffers from starring in a weaker film.
11. Aurora
I like Aurora. What little we see of her anyway. We can tell by the way she interacts with the fairies, woodland creatures, and Prince Philip that she’s smart, sweet, shy, kind, cautious. She’s a dreamer, but not foolish. It’s too bad we didn’t get to see more of her.
10. Snow White
Snow White, in my opinion, does not get the respect she deserves. Was she stupid to take that apple from the very obviously evil hag? Yes, she was. But people have forgotten all about the really great qualities she possessed too. When she walked into the dwarfs’ cottage, it was a disgusting, unlivable nightmare. The dwarfs were pigs. They didn’t clean their home or themselves. They bickered all the time. Snow White changed all of that. She created order where there was disorder. And she didn’t do it alone. She delegated chores to each of the animals and made sure they did them right. That’s some managerial skills! She got a bunch of unruly little men to wash, sleep at a decent time, and behave. That’s authority. Those are some real life skills I wish I had more of. Yes, she cooked, cleaned, and sewed, but Snow White wasn’t a servant. She was in charge.
9. Cinderella
Like Snow White, Cinderella has gotten a bad rap over time, but I will defend Cinderella anytime anywhere. Those who say she “needed a prince to save her” lack compassion and are completely missing the point. Cinderella was a young woman who was abused by what family she had left. At a young age she experienced loss, grief, then neglect and emotional abuse. But Cinderella was resilient. That abuse didn’t stop her and it didn’t change her. She could’ve become mean, bitter, and jealous. She could’ve continued the cycle of abuse like her stepsisters. But Cinderella didn’t allow their mistreatment to define her. She remained kind, empathetic, patient, humble, and hardworking. She also didn’t allow herself to become a victim. She didn’t mope or give up on herself. When the ball was announced, she worked hard and believed she would go. When she got help from the fairy godmother, she accepted it and rocked that ball gown. She didn’t go to the ball to be rescued. She went because she wanted to, and she did. Moral of the story is do not let others’ treatment of you determine who you are or what you’re worth. Cinderella had awesome inner strength.
8. Ariel
I will admit that as an adult, Ariel’s appeal fades. She made really bad choices and sacrificing her voice for a boy is a terrible message to sell to kids. But for a 5 year old girl, only two things mattered. She was a mermaid and she could sing. The Little Mermaid kick started Disney’s renaissance and set a new precedent for its movies. Unlike previous princesses, Ariel was the first princess full of life, passion, and adventure. She had an exciting and lovable personality and a Broadway singing voice. Credit goes to Jodi Benson for bringing Ariel to life and the writers for getting the world to fall in love with her. She made a huge impression (hello, mermaid craziness everywhere!), even if she was a total idiot teenager.
7. Jasmine
What’s great about Jasmine is she can see through people’s BS and she doesn’t put up with it. She isn’t impressed by the superficial suitors that come her way. She stands up to Jafar. She catches on pretty immediately that Prince Ali is actually Aladdin. She sings like Lea Salonga, Disney and Broadway legend, and she has a pet tiger. What’s not to love?
6. Pocahontas
Pocahontas was the first Disney princess to not go after her dreams, but instead chose family, community, duty, loyalty. That’s incredibly mature and selfless. She taught a racist, arrogant, ignorant man to love and respect others different from him. She followed her intuition, was one nature, and dove off cliffs. The only minus is falling for John Smith over Kokoam. I don’t know what she was thinking!
5. Moana
Moana is not qualified for her mission. She has no experience and no skills required for sailing across the sea, finding Maui, and defeating a lava monster. But it’s her purpose. She was chosen. So she sets out and figures it out along the way. That’s an inspiring example. It’s not until the end that we find out why she was chosen. She sees Te Ka for who she truly is. Te Fiti. The image above is one of the most powerful moments in all of Disney’s films.
4. Rapunzel
Similar to Cinderella, Rapunzel has been abused throughout her childhood. IMO, Rapunzel had it worse because she believed Mother Gothel was her mother. Their relationship was nonstop manipulation, infantilization, and gaslighting. But Rapunzel was brave enough to go after what she wanted and smart enough to find a way to do it. On top of that, she was creative and artistic, incredibly strong from years of hauling Mother Gothel up the tower, and had magical hair with healing powers. In the end, she does what we didn’t get to see in Cinderella. She stands up for herself and confronts her abuser. She’s a real survivor and victor.
3. Belle
I love Belle because she is a true introvert and a true individual. She’s not very social, doesn’t gossip, doesn’t fawn over Gaston, doesn’t follow the townsfolk’s way of life. She literally just does her own thing. For that, she’s misunderstood and judged by the village. I think that’s very relatable. But she’s also intelligent, curious, adventurous, honorable (she keeps her promise to stay with the Beast), and stands up to the Beast when he’s out of line. She’s the only one that truly challenges the Beast and he grows because of it. And she saves him.
2. Mulan
Similar to Belle, Mulan is a bit of an outcast, because she’s individualistic in a society that values conformity. She’s socially awkward, clumsy, but brave. That bravery saves her father and all of China. She’s a true badass warrior.
1. Elsa
Elsa is technically not a princess, but a queen. She still counts and she tops my list. Out of all the Disney princesses, she is the most real and fully developed. She’s beautiful, kind, brave, strong, but also very flawed. Many people have identified with Elsa in different ways because her flaws are so real and so relatable. The LGBTQ community has adopted her as a symbol of their own. For me personally, I see a mental health issue. I think she’s a highly sensitive person with anxiety. Her ice powers are a beautiful symbol for that anxiety and the struggle over her mental health. Her journey to accept herself for who she is, to embrace herself for who she is, and to find her place in a world that deems her different is truly beautiful and empowering.

A Cinderella Story - II

“Where the hell do you get off?!” Stiles barged into the throne room after returning to the castle.
“Try again,” his father warned without looking up from the papers he was shuffling through.
“A ball?! Really, dad?! And why is ‘every eligible maid’ invited specifically?” Stiles continued.
Noah looked up from the papers at his son and let out a breath. “Well, you weren’t at the meeting and your mother thought it was a great idea to help you find a bride.”
Stiles looked across the room at the queen with flared nostrils, pursed lips and furrowed brows.
“You did this, mom?!” Stiles accused.
The queen shrugged and spoke calmly as she walked closer to her son, “I think it’ll be good for you to socialize… You are expected to wed soon, after all.”
Stiles grumbled under his breath for a moment and turned back to his dad. “How do you even know I like girls, huh?!”
“You’re not gay, son...” the king said and turned back to his papers.
Stiles’ jaw dropped. “I—I could be!”
The king looked his son up and down and at a guard named Daniel who was married to a man. Daniel closed his eyes and shook his head with a flat mouth.
“Not in that outfit,” the king concluded.
Stiles took a deep breath. “For your information, I met a girl today.”
“Really? What’s her name?” his mother asked.
“…shit,” Stiles said and remembered that he never got the name of the woman that hadn’t left his thoughts.
“Her name is Shit?” his father asked.
“No, I... I didn’t get her name,” Stiles admitted.
“Well then all the more reason to be excited! She’ll be at the ball, especially if she’s single!” Stiles’ mother said with a smile. “Cheer up, darling. We want what’s best for you.”
Stiles grumbled. “Fine. I’ll go along with this. But ONLY because I don’t know her name or where she lives or... anything about her.”
“That’s the spirit, son,” Noah encouraged with a small smile.
Stiles groaned and walked off to change out of Scott’s clothes.

Ella spent the whole walk home daydreaming about the man she’d just met. She had never seen him before, but she hoped that he would become a regular part of her visits into town.
“You look happy! Was your shopping trip good?” Ariel asked once Ella returned to the property.
“I ran into someone. He ran into me actually, but… he was very charming,” Ella explained and Belle squealed.
“Was he handsome?! Tall?!” Belle asked and flew closer to Ella’s face. Ella laughed and nodded.
“He had the most wonderful brown eyes I’d ever seen. They were almost a dark gold color…” Ella said. “Ah, well. Just another dream.”
She made her way into the house and delivered the herbs to her stepsisters and decided to deliver the news of the ball to the three of them.
“Stepmother?” Ella said to Winifred, who was in the music room with Malia and Allison practicing various instruments.
“What is it, child?” she asked.
“Well, I was just in town and the royal steward announced that there is to be a masquerade ball in two days to honor the prince and the whole kingdom is invited. He said that every eligible maid to is attend, and by the end of the night Prince Mieczyslaw will choose one of them to be his bride,” Ella said. Malia and Allison perked up and gripped each other’s hands.
Winifred stood up and smiled widely. “This is it! This is the chance we’ve been waiting for, girls!”
“Oh my gosh, a party in the castle!” Allison exclaimed.
“I, um… I was, well… Um…” Ella stammered.
“Spit it out, spit it out!” Winifred demanded.
“Well, the proclamation said that every eligible maid was to attend… so I was thinking… that maybe I could go, too…” Ella said sheepishly.
Winifred snorted and laughed maniacally. Malia and Allison’s faces dropped and looked at their mother worriedly.
“Oh... oh dear. Oh goodness, that was hilarious. You? At the ball? Oh, you’ve lost your head, girl,” Winifred cackled. “You think YOU have a chance to marry the prince?”
“Well, of course I don’t have a chance with the prince, persay, bu—”
“Then that settles it—you won’t be going,” Winifred interrupted Ella.
“Mother, if the king wants every eligible maid there, then Ella should go… so that we aren’t going to get in trouble,” Malia stepped up cautiously.
Winifred’s face soured at her daughter and then turned to Ella, who felt like she was on fire.
“Well. I suppose if you get all of your chores completed and IF you can find a suitable dress to wear, then you can go,” Winifred finally ceded.
Ella’s face lit up and she smiled widely as her heart filled with hope. “Oh, thank you, stepmother! I’ll get everything done, I promise!”
Ella smiled and rushed through her chores that day and when nightfall came, she pulled out her mother’s old evening dress. The colors had faded slightly to a neutral blush tone and off-white instead of their original rose and white because of age, but Ella thought with a few modifications the dress would look just as wonderful as any other.
“What do you have that old thing out for, Ella?” Snow asked from Ella’s window.
“Oh! Did you not hear about the ball that the castle is having day after tomorrow?” Ella said excitedly.
“Oh, we heard about it… Is that what you’re wearing..?” Ariel asked.
Ella nodded excitedly. “It needs a few modifications, but I think it will do just fine, don’t you?”
“Oh, I think it will be lovely, you’ll look absolutely gorgeous in it,” Cindy commented.
Ella smiled widely and looked through her sewing books before finally drifting off to sleep. She dreamed of Stiles and dancing at the ball, and she hoped that she could get her dress finished.
The next two days were packed full of things to do for Ella. From the minute she woke up to the second her stepmother and stepsisters went to bed, Ella’s plate was overflowing with things to do. She managed to complete her tasks just in time to help Malia and Allison into their dresses for the ball. Ella was sad that she hadn’t gotten her dress done and therefore couldn’t go with them, but she was happy that at least her stepfamily would be gone for the night.
“Stepmother? The carriage has arrived,” Ella informed Winifred when the horse and coach arrived at the mansion’s front door at six o’clock.
“Excellent. Malia, Allison! Let’s go,” Winifred commanded her daughters. Ella walked to her room with a sad gait past her stepsisters, who shared a look of pity and guilt.
Ella opened her door and heard the chimes and bells of her friends that illuminated the room and the completed dress of Ella’s vision. She smiled widely and teared up at how gorgeous the gown looked.
“Surprise!” Belle announced.
“Hurry, before the coach leaves!” Ariel said. She and Cindy lifted the dress and handed it to Ella.
“You.. you guys did this for me..?” Ella said through a choked up voice.
“Of course we did! Winifred tried, but there was no way she could stop us!” Jasmine said.
“Come on! Get dressed!” Snow urged. Ella smiled and quickly put the dress on. She didn’t have time to admire herself and she ran down to the foyer where Winifred, Malia, and Allison were headed out the door.
“Wait! Wait, please!” Ella called out. The three women turned and looked at Ella. Malia and Allison’s expressions were ones of silent happiness and Winifred’s was one of utter disgust and surprise.
Ella approached them with a bright smile and twirled her dress. “IT’s not nearly as grand as yours are, but I think it’ll do, don’t you?”
“It looks lov—” Malia began, but Winifred closed her daughter’s mouth with a wave of her hand.
“Hm… It seems to be a bit old, yes? A whole night of dancing may… wear it out,” Winifred said in a manner that was vaguely threatening.
“It was my mother’s dress. I made it over a bit, so I—” Ella started to say, but in an instant and with a brutal tearing sound, a sleeve was gone from Ella’s dress. Her eyes welled up with tears at the sight of the hard work being ruined, but she held strong despite Winifred’s sabotage. Ella stood strong as Winifred continued to tear the dress in different places—ripping off ruffles, bows, and beading that Ella’s friends had put so much work into.
“Mom, we have to go,” Allison said abruptly. Ella looked at her stepsisters and saw the slight tears in their eyes and Malia’s hands covered her mouth in shock.
“Pity,” was all Winifred said. Ella stood in the foyer in complete shock and heartbreak for a little while longer. She had thought about everything that she had been put through—the death of her father, never knowing her mother, slaving away and being ridiculed and manipulated into being a slave for her stepmother—and decided that enough was enough. Ella clenched her jaw and stormed back to her room with tears streaming down her face.
“Oh, Ella, I’m so sorry,” Jasmine offered.
Ella shook her head. “No, I’m sorry. You put so much work into this truly beautiful dress and she just… tore it up. And I couldn’t stop her.”
“Oh, it’s not your fault, sweetie. Come on, we can get a new one going!” Belle encouraged, but Ella shook her head.
“I’m not going to the ball,” Ella said and began to fill bag with the few belongings she had that meant anything to her.
“Ella, what are you doing?” Ariel asked.
“I’m leaving. I can’t stay here any longer. I don’t know where I’ll go, but it can’t… it can’t be here,” Ella said through tears. She felt the weight of her life and disappointment pull her to the floor and she sobbed for a while until she heard a knock at the door. Deciding to pull herself together for a moment, she answered it and didn’t care who saw her in such a terrible way.
“Pardon me, miss, but I seem to have heard some crying?” a woman with green eyes, strawberry blonde hair and porcelain skin said at the door.
“Um... um, yes that was me. I’m sorry to have disturbed you, I thought I was alone,” Ella said.
“Oh, dear, you’re never alone,” the woman said with a smile.
“Can I ask who you are..?” Ella said.
“I’m Lydia, a light witch,” she said with a cheery smile.
Ella smiled politely. “I’m Ella. How can I help you?”
“I know who you are, dear. But the better question is, how can I help you?” Lydia said. Ella’s brows furrowed and Lydia beckoned her to step outside.
“You know, everyone knows how you’re treated… I had hoped to see you in the coach with your stepsisters, but... no such luck, I suppose. So I came here to offer my services to you,” Lydia said with a smile.
“Your… services…?” Ella asked with a confused look.
“Let’s see. You’ll need a coach, horses, footmen… Let’s see what we have to work with here…” Lydia said and pulled a long and pointed white baton that glowed from her inside pocket.
“I’m sorry, I don’t understand,” Ella said apologetically.
“Well would you prefer to walk to the castle? The ball would be over by the time you get there, so I recommend carriage,” Lydia said and waved her wand. Suddenly, a pumpkin that was growing in the garden was hoisted into the air and became a magnificent golden carriage. Ella’s eyes nearly bulged out of her head—even Winifred’s magic wasn’t that magnificent.
“Wow… it’s so beautiful…” Ella commented.
“Thank you, sweetie. Now stand back, I’m going to give you horses,” Lydia said and Ella stepped back. Before her very eyes, four field mice were turned into magnificent white horses and attached to the carriage. Ella felt like she was dreaming and pinched herself to make sure she was awake. Lydia waved her wand once more and an owl that was perched on the tree above them took human form and sat in the driver’s seat.
“Alright, and now for you, dear. Let’s see… For a masquerade ball…” Lydia said and thought for a moment while looking over Ella. Lydia’s expression changed and her face lit up in a smile. “Hold still!”
Ella held perfectly still as she was engulfed in a bright white light. She began to feel her skirt grow a bit heavier and her hair curled itself. She felt a necklace form a band around her neck and shoes form around her feet.
“There! Oh, you look even lovelier than I had hoped!” Lydia gushed and formed a mirror out of thin air in front of Ella.
Ella looked in the mirror and could barely recognize herself. The gown she wore was a grand ballgown that shone silvery blue and sparkled in the moonlight. The simple black band around her neck pulled the look together with her curled hair. She lifted the gown to see what her shoes looked like and she saw the most stunning pieces of footwear that she’d ever seen. The shoes shifted through all colors of the rainbow and sparkled much like her dress.
“Are these—” Ella began, and Lydia finished.
“Diamond shoes? Why yes, they are. One of a kind!” Lydia said with cheer.
“Lydia, I have no way of paying you back… this is too much. Surely I can’t accept these wonderful gifts…” Ella said and walked over to the witch.
Lydia smiled and held Ella’s hands. “You deserve to be happy. It is my mission to make everyone I possibly can happy. Unfortunately, this happiness will only last until midnight, so be sure to make it back by then, okay?”
Ella shed a few tears of gratitude and gave Lydia a tight hug.
“Thank you… Thank you so much. I’ll never forget your kindness,” Ella said and climbed into the carriage. As Ella was waving goodbye, she noticed that her fairy friends were trailing behind the carriage and Lydia disappeared from view. Ella smiled to herself and looked down at her magnificent gown and shoes. She couldn’t believe her good fortune and memorized every detail of her carriage. She smiled to herself the whole ride to the castle.
Once she arrived, she realized that she was slightly late to the party, but the guards helped her into the castle anyway. Before walking in, she placed the intricately detailed silver and blue mask that matched her dress over her eyes. She made her way through the grand halls towards where she could hear music and chatter. Before long, she found herself among other masked folk. Nervously, she readjusted her mask and started to step into the crowd.
“How lucky it is that you’re here,” she heard a familiar voice say from beside her. She turned and saw a man with chocolate brown hair dressed in the traditional formal attire for all men of the kingdom and donned a bale blue mask over his golden honey brown eyes.
Ella smiled widely. “Stiles!”

Rest In Peace: Chapter Five
Title: Rest In Peace
Chapter: 5
Summary: A part of Faithless Fairy Tale, a more in depth look at how they brought Laura back to life. Appearance of old faces, creation of new ones and if you’re looking for canon, it left a long, long time ago. If you squint you might be able to see some pieces from the book.
A/N: There is a very bastardized version of Buile Shuibhne, or what Mad Sweeney is based off, in this chapter. I admit to just reading the wikipedia article on it. Judge me, for I judge myself.
“A tale may have exactly three beginnings: one for the audience, one for the artist, and one for the poor bastard who has to live in it.” -Catherynne M. Valente
+
If she says believe one more time, he was going to pop a boner.
He doesn't even remember the last time someone believed in him, that knew his story. Not just faith in the little people, but who he was. Before all that, his own history has been muddled by time and twisted into tales by those who wanted to demonize his kind. The truth was, he didn't even know where to begin. Usually he only thought about it when he was drunk as hell, and alone.
Never has he shared it with a mortal, with no faith in her heart.
But she's lookin' for it, she's searching for a reason to try ain't she?
It was better than nothing.
It was better than a lot of things.
“It's not a pretty lil fairy tale.” He says, giving her a small out. If she insults him, he can use that to change the subject. To push her away.
“Yeah, well I hated Disney as a kid and liked the original Grimm fairy tales more so I think I can handle it.” She replies, not earnestly but frankly. She is not going to play to his ego, attempt to smooth out her personality for him. For one, he would instantly be suspicious of it and for another there isn't much she can hide from Sweeney for whatever the reason.
He knows the truth of her sad life. How miserable she had been just to exist, the stupid things she tried to do to fix that. How she failed.
Mad Sweeney was there at her gory end, the very reason of it and knows her. From her sharp poisonous tongue to her rotted guts, and all the nasty edges in between. Unwillingly, he would say, but he knows it better than anyone else never the less.
He knows the real Laura Moon, and now she's asking to know him.
It's pathetic how he feels a little undone because of it, like she's pulled on some hidden sting that undoes his knotted complex wall of bitterness and exposes his heart. If she was kind, if she was soft with batting lashes he could call her a liar but no. She's Laura McCabe, alright. Tight little frown and dead eyes, looking and demanding for truths from a world that didn't want to share.
She’s takes them anyways.
“You would, wouldn't you?”He sighs, giving in.
“My mother hated it. Actually everyone hated it, I constantly reminded them how those stories really ended. Ariel kills herself, Cinderella's sisters hack their own feet off. Sleeping Beauty wasn't exactly awake to consent. I was the asshole kid who read too much, it's a surprise I'm sure.”
“I've had bigger.”
Laura gives him a smug grin, radiating a mean sort of mirth that makes his insides clench. He hates how much power she has over him already, and they haven’t even started down this dangerous journey.
“That's what she said.”
Sweeney chuckles, because god damn it, he walked into that one. “Aye, alright then. Come on Dead Girl. Let's go find a place in this hell hole to sit down. It's a long tale.”
+
“Your real name is what?” Laura's laughter cracks through her words, she has to bite her lip -which isn't a good idea because they aren't bleeding as so much leaking but seriously. Who wouldn't chuckle at that name?
“Buile Suibhne was a perfectly fine name in my day!” He defends, but there's a flush along his cheeks and the bridge of his nose.
She laughs wickedly, but attempts to keep silent. They've literally only just started, his first slice of truth being a name he hasn't been called in decades. Even she is aware that this is delicate thing, and will open the door to other secrets. Laura is greedy enough to want them regardless of price, big or small, she privately likes the idea of getting all of him.
Not in that way, perv. (Not while she's dead as a door nail)
Laura mimes zipping her mouth shut, and throwing away the key. Looking up at him with what she is hoping is a wide eyed expression of innocence. Mad Sweeney Suibhne responds with a look of disgust.
“Stop that, Dead Girl. You look like you're on drugs.”
“Okay...Buile Suibhne.”
“...I regret telling you anything.”
She ends up laughing anyways.
+
Turns out he really was a king. Long ago and once upon a time, in a different place completely; but this time Laura looks at him while he tells her and believes it. Wishes she could explain it, wishes further still she could tuck away the knowledge of what he looks like when he knows she's listening; it feels like she's stolen something, like she did it with him watching and its so intimate she nearly wants to touch him.
She knows he's real, but the urge is there never the less.
Laura keeps her hands to herself and instead questions him.
“So you really were a King. As like, a mortal guy and they just, what? Made a religion about you?”
Sweeney shakes his head. “Not as simple as that, Dead Girl. Belief doesn't always mean scripture and prayers. It doesn't even have to be truth, because the real truth is that I died. The mortal man that I was, and what I am now isn't half of what left that battle field but in that moment I was what they believed I could be. More than a man, stronger and unbroken. It was better than the truth.” His voice isn't soft by any credence, but it does sound different. Like his accent has got stronger or his tone lighter.
Like he's shed off some weight from his shoulders, and maybe he has.
+
Laura doesn't say anything at all when he tells her about Eorann. His wife, the only one he has ever taken. Mortal or otherwise.
She merely gets this expression on her face, that reads as constipation but just as easily could be her feeling sorry for him. Which he hates and she seemingly hates to express so he glides over that part.
He doesn't tell her about Eorann's pretty red hair, or cruel smile. About her brazen attitude or the number of children they had.
He doesn't tell her that Essie looked just like her, and that in the right light, Laura does too.
Sweeney has already made vows to himself never to confess these things, because that isn't going to make her trust him. Those aren't anything but weights. Confusing bastard ones, designed to send him mad again. Ain't nothing to put on her shoulders and expect her to deal with.
So instead, he tells her how the cloak Eorann gave him unraveled. How he chased the massive idiot saint around stark naked in the freezing cold of daylight.
Her uneasy expression shifts into delight.
+
He tells her of the mistakes he made, of his personal war with the churches on his land. Of the curses they laid upon him because of it. Of the fire he saw his death in, combined with the taunting roar of war coming for him. How it all drove him beyond madness, pushed him to lose himself. How he was cursed to become a bird.
“What was it like?” She questions, curious despite herself.
Sweeney shrugs. “Better. Easier. Not a hard life, being a bird.”
+
He tells her of his flights, of being captured and escaping. How the sad truth was, everyone was expecting more from him than he could give. Even without his madness. A bird, was all he was, cursed besides. Coward down to his bones. Instead of capturing him, they should have shot him down and roasted his fluffy ass.
“And Eorann?”
“I told her to get a new husband.” He admits. “Hardly a marriage if only one person is in it.”
Laura's nails leave an imprint on the meat of her palms.
“Maybe to her there was still two.”
He doesn't have any defense to that, because deep down he knows she's right.
Eorann kept believing in him even when he wasn't able to believe in himself.
+
“Wait, wait. How the hell is it your fault that she died, not like you pushed her, right? Also, what the fuck. How the hell did you get taunted into a contest of leaping. Is your ego that big that you just have to be the best at leaping? I thought you said you got your sanity back.” Laura needles, only to lean back into her seat, “What the fuck is leaping, anyways?”
“First off, she was a madder bitch than I. And second I was still healing! Third...” He pauses, and she waits several long seconds.
“...you don't even an excuse, do you?”
Sweeney doesn't.
“How the fuck was I to know she was his mother-in-law?”
+
By the time he has unearthed all his secrets, the sun has set.
Shadow and Ostara are gone while they had chatted, off on their own adventure they both presume. Without so much as a goodbye or note on the fridge.
Sweeney isn't too bothered. He's smart enough to know while the Goddess has so graciously allowed their stay, and offered her own libraries, that doesn't mean they are not being watched by probably a hundred beady eyes.
Laura and Sweeney part ways after story time, he to look for food. Her to think, he assumes. The dead don't need to sleep or eat, and it will take more than his tale for them to trust each other.
It's a start, this sharing, small as it might be. Where he's not just some random asshole to her, and while he wouldn't call them friends he can't say they don't mean anything to each other.
Outside nothing has changed, but he can feel a hint of power returning. Less like strength and more, like he's shed an invisible weighted coat or just took an hour long shower. Refreshed.
Telling Laura about this feeling however, feels like a mistake. Either she'll tease him till kingdom come or she'll think he's being emotionally weird. Which, he can't say he's not.
He's trying his best not to be, because that's not what this is about.
It's about getting her life back. He owes her that.

Sully and Mike show up on balcony with many doors fro Monsters Inc
Giant Door opens as “open the door” is sung
Toy balcony facade returns, balcony comes to life to sing in a spotlight “That’s what friends are for” in a solo low deep voice
Choir starts singing “Never Had a Friend Like Me” while facade changes to a more neon and lights appearance like the movie’s scene, with various girls from the same scene dance around the castle as Genie performs; voices transition to Genie’s instead of Choir
On finishing big note, tallest tower rockets off into the sky
Family segment
Facade looks more like a castle with big open windows again, Olaf appears on a snow-covered balcony
Olaf: “Some people are worth melting for” with a sigh
Slow acoustic cover of “Love is an Open Door” plays, a big moon rises across facade
Wall-E and Eve fly across facade
Music transitions to an Instrumental version of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”
Facade looks pink, covered in flowers, and waterfalls as Simba and Nala nuzzle
Music transitions to a cover of “You’ll Be In My heart”; family scenes flash across facade
Kala hugs baby Tarzan
Riely and her parents are playing around
Baby Dory is hugged by her parents
Russel runs into Carl’s arms for a hug
Dumbo gives his mother many kisses
Judy hugs her parents
The Parr family shares a group hug
Romance Segment
Facade changes blue and purple, silhouettes of Disney couples appear across the castle
Ariel & Eric
Tiana & frog!Naveen (WHY IS HE A FROG IN THE ROMANCE SCENE???)
Cinderella & Prince Charming
Belle & Beast
Aurora & Phillp
Snow White & her Prince
Jasmine & Aladdin
Rapunzel & Eugene
Aladdin (as Prince Ali) and Jasmine fly across facade on the Magic Carpet as instrumental version of “A Whole New World” plays briefly before transition to “I See the Light”
Lanterns from Tangled start to appear, floating up the castle, it darkens toward the end
Silhouette of Rapunzel and Eugene at the bottom of the castle, glowing before they let go of two last lanters that fly up to illuminate a couple of the couple sihouettes once more
Small instrumental of “A Whole New World” finishes the song
Villains Segment
Facade transitions to the Emperor of China’s palace
Emperor appears on balcony: “A that flower blooms in adversity is the more rare and beautiful of all.”
Shan Yu appears in the tallest tower before Mulan as Ping appears in the balcony fires off a rocket, which launches off the castle and flies off as a firework
Syndrome appears at the tower and shoots a bolt of lightning at an Omnidroid, which starts destroying the castle’s facade and blowing holes in it, the Parr family appears in those holes
Ocean rises up from the bottom of the castle before a giant Ursula wearing Triton’s crown and wielding his trident rises up from it, her tentacles wrapping around the castle spires (New animation from Eric Goldberg) Prince Eric is standing the balcony before he jumps into the waters as Ursula shoots lighting at him from the trident; she returns under the depths as a bolt of lighting cracks and the water recedes
Orange smoke rises from the bottom of the castle, revealing Pride Rock in flames as Simba and Scar duel and silhouettes of hyenas and lionesses watch; giant shadow of them fighting is in the background as well
Orange smoke plumes quickly up to reveal Jafar as a giant snake. Aladdin drops down from one of the mid-level spires with a sword. Jafar lunges at him with fangs bared as he jumps to the next spire and swings around it before jumping down to swing his sword at him. He jumps down once more off to the bottom of the castle where Jafar follows (New animation from Randy Haycock)
Facade quickly changes green as black thorny vines wrap around it, Maleficent appears, cackling in a blast of green fire as the castle is shocked with lightning. Prince Phillip on Samson rides across the bottom of the castle. In purple smoke, she changes to her dragon form and blows green fire at Prince Phillip’s shield in the balcony
Fire changes orange as music (which had been playing their respective instrumental soundtracks to the fight scenes) transitions to the Pirates of the Carribbean theme. Castle is on fire and you see a silhouette of Jack Sparrow and another pirate (i’m not quite sure who it is) swordfighting, various silhouettes of known characters that fight flash across the facade like
Eric at the wheel of his ship(?)
Aladdin with a sword
Merida with her bow
Mulan with a staff from I’ll Make a Man Out of You
the Parr Family
Phillip throws his sword into the heart of dragon!Maleficent
Facade darkens to a rainy scene with a dying fire at its base as sparks fly up
Hero segment
Face of Mufasa appears in the dying flames at the mid-level of the castle as the music of “I Can Go the Distance” starts building up
Mufasa: “Look inside yourself. You are more than what you have become. Remember who you are” the “remember” fadingly echoes twice
Castle facade darkends as cover vocals of “I Can Go the Distance starts”
Aladdin appears at the bottom of the castle, looking sullen for a moment then stands proudly looking in the distance (New animation from Randy Haycock) - he fades away
Tarzan appears opposite of him, standing up like he finished fighting Saboor then fades
Mulan appears in the bottom of the tallest tower holding the village girl’s doll and kneeling down to place it before fading
A glowing, newly-annointed-god Hercules appears in the balcony holding Megara in his arms as he rescues her from the underworld
Interstumentals build as flash of triumphant scenes show like
Moana cheering
Snow White being embraced by her Prince after waking with the dwarfs cheering
Ariel in her silver dress being spun in Eric’s arms
Cinderella waving from her wedding carriage
Vanellope receiving a trophy
Aladdin sealing Jafar and Genie ruffling his hair
Elsa and Anna hugging
Tiana and Naveen running down the aisle after getting married
Facade turns gilded as slowly the windows start being covered by stain glass featuring with Choir singing “I Can Go the Distance” ending chorus:
Cinderella with her glass slipper
Aladdin
Tarzan
Woody
Merida
Elsa & Anna
Mulan
Peter Pan
Alice
Snow White
Pinocchio
Moana
Tiana in her green dress, holding frog!Naveen
Aurora
Beast
Belle
(and a few more I think; youtube videos make it hard to see those tiny details)
Narrator: “And so our journey comes to an end but yours continues on. Grab hold of your dreams and makes them come true for you are the key to unlock your own magic. Now go; let your dreams guide you. Reach out and find your happily every after.”
“Happily Ever After” starts playing as fireworks go off, the stain glass facade changes to the ornate castle.
A Brief transition in the song changes to “You Can Fly” as Tinker Bell flies out of the tallest tower across the sky and the song goes back to “Happily Every After”
The ornate design of the castle keeps changes colors in bursts with accompanying fireworks until finale
#happily every after fireworks#magic kingdom#happily ever after#walt disney world#This is where we create happiness#i worked on this for like an hour and a half almost two hours idk who has a life i don't

so this is basically a long-ass rant disguised as a review of Little Mermaid II that I originally posted on a different blog. maybe someday I'll actually get back to that blog, but for right now the theme is broken and I can't read anything on it anymore.
so for now, this will live right here instead c:
------------------
Everyone's already taken their shots at the notoriously bad Disney sequels made in the late 90s and early 2000s. They're basically a walking punch line just by existing. But really, not all of them are completely worthless, and a couple of them are even pretty enjoyable, in a hilarious "I can't believe they actually made this" sort of way.
But I'm here to talk about only the most heinous of cinematic disasters. And let me make one thing perfectly clear: this isn't just Kit being a bitter and cranky old fogy with a chip on her shoulder because the shitty sequel ruined her childhood. I mean, I am bitter and cranky, but The Little Mermaid II couldn't possibly lower my opinion of the original -- there's not really anything lower than rock bottom. (yeah I hate The Little Mermaid fight me)
This movie is just flat out that bad.
word count: 3070
------------------
I'm just gonna get one thing out of the way right now: nothing about this movie frustrates me more than the cast. This cast is made up of particularly well-known voice actors, and it's heartbreaking that they all got wrangled into doing this shit. Jodi Benson (Ariel), Samuel E. Wright (Sebastian), Kenneth Mars (King Triton), and Buddy Hackett (Scuttle) all return to reprise their roles from the first movie, and Pat Carroll who played Ursula is here to play Morgana, the main villain and Ursula's conveniently-never-before-mentioned sister. Yeah. They're doing that. And on top of getting so much of the original cast, they also roped in:
Rob Paulsen (Eric)
Tara Strong (Melody)
Clancy Brown (Undertow)
Cam Clarke (Flounder)
Rene freaking Auberjonois as Chef Louis
and one my favorite VAs Stephen Furst as Dash, one half of the Timon and Pumbaa knock-offs for the film.
When just looking at the cast list pisses me off this much... I don't think this is going to be much fun.
A quick recap for those who have been living under a rock since the late 70s: The Little Mermaid is the story of Ariel, daughter of the ruler of Atlantica, who at the completely world-wise age of 16 decides she's had enough of life under the sea and wants to live with the humans on land. She turns to the sea-witch Ursula for help, and in exchange for her voice is given a pair of legs and a deadline: kiss the man of her dreams within three days or join the shriveled legion of Ursula's previous victims. Naturally the witch doesn't play fair and Ariel fails, and King Triton offers himself in exchange for his daughter, thus sacrificing his washboard abs and obscenely powerful trident to Ursula. One climactic battle later, Ursula's dead, Triton turns Ariel into a human, and she and Prince Eric live happily ever after.
Until the sequel, of course, where Ariel and Eric have a baby girl, Melody, which makes me question the exact biology of this bizarre offspring. I mean just look at this thing:
She was just born but she's got a full head of hair and disturbingly large blue eyes. It's freakish. But anyway, this is where movie number 2 begins.
And we're off to a good start: smacked in the face with a terrible music number. I would say get used to those, but there aren't really enough in the movie to warrant it -- which is pretty bad when you consider this is supposed to be a musical. Also, "listen to Ariel's Melody"? That's... wow. I can't even say that's cute in a sarcastic way that's just terrible.
But oh no! The party is interrupted by Morgana, who is, as Sebastian so eloquently puts it:
Oh good. I can see we'll be dealing with truly ingenious writing here.
So after stealing the baby Melody, ranting and raving about being better than her sister Ursula, and attempting to feed the baby to a shark (all while Ariel, Eric, and Triton stand there doing absolutely nothing), Morgana flees to the arctic. Wait, the arctic? Well, alright, you need to escape pursuit to a barren wasteland, that's fair. I won't linger on this for now, as the geography problems will get a lot worse later.
One of the main MacGuffins of the movie is a gold locket with Melody's name inscribed on it, that projects an image of Atlantica and plays a lullaby when opened. King Triton was giving it to the baby before Morgana came onto the scene, and after failing to find her in a massive search of the sea, Triton drops it in the water and leaves. This strikes me as odd. Wouldn't you want to hang onto it? As a keepsake of your family? Or at the very least dispose of it more properly, just in case Melody might one day, oh I dunno, find it and realize her mother and father had been lying to her her entire life? Nah, I'm sure it'll be fine.
Fast forward 12 years. A giant wall has been built on the shore to keep Melody and the ocean apart, but being a tenacious kid she naturally figured out a way around it. Or rather, under it. Which raises the question: if this child could figure out a way out, why couldn't Morgana figure a way in? It would have been a simple matter to slip under the wall, scale the outside of the tower with her suction cup-riddled tentacles, and kidnap the baby to hold for ransom. Why was it so imperative to wait until Melody found the locket before enacting her plan to steal the trident?
Oh, yeah, that thing I mentioned before about her finding it? Lo and behold, she discovered the damn thing on one of her jaunts to collect seashells (which are comically huge by the way). If only Triton had done literally anything else with it, this whole mess might have been avoided.
But no time to worry about that now; there's a birthday party to attend!
Through a convoluted mess of trying to hide her seashells and pretend she'd been in her room the entire time, Melody accidentally ties Sebastian into the dorky bow on the back of her party dress. I'm sure this will have no consequences down the line at all--
Huh. Didn't see that one coming. This leads to a ridiculous scene of Chef Louis chasing Sebastian around the ballroom like some sort of crazed lunatic. I know this was a thing from the first movie, but this guy is out of his fucking gourd; why do they keep him around? Ultimately, Melody runs off to her room out of embarrassment.
I really don't want to linger on anything for too long since this movie doesn't deserve that much energy, but there's two things about this scene I need to address. One: so basically if Sebastian had just remained calm and waited it out... none of this would have happened? I think the blame for this one falls on him. And two: why the hell are all these other children making fun of Melody? I know she's ~weird~ and all, but she's the freaking princess. Don't you think they'd know better than exclude the princess of the entire kingdom? I would want to stay on her good side is all I'm saying.
Anyway. Melody finally takes a good look at the locket and realizes something's up, confronting her mother about Atlantica. Okay, Ariel, here's your chance. If you just explain the situation, she'll understand and maybe you could even take her to Atlantica under heavy guard or something so she can finally meet her damn grandfather.
Or you could just get mad. Getting mad is good too.
Naturally after that Melody decides to take off, rowing a rather conveniently placed boat out to sea to try and figure it all out for herself. While she meets Undertow and agrees to follow him to Morgana, Sebastian is back at the castle psyching himself up to tell Ariel that Melody ran away.
WAIT. YOU DIDN'T KNOW? IT'S BEEN TWELVE YEARS AND YOU HAD NO IDEA SEBASTIAN WAS KEEPING AN EYE ON MELODY??
So in the end, a) Ariel is the least observant person in the world, b) Sebastian never once told her about Melody's excursions beyond the wall (remember that for later), and c) Triton didn't bother to let Ariel know he'd assigned Sebastian the job, continuing the family cycle of not communicating with each other. In hindsight all this bullshit family drama isn't that surprising.
Back to Melody and Morgana (yes, somehow Undertow and the manta ray minions hauled the boat to the arctic in just a couple of hours), Morgana is doing what she does best: whining about Ursula. Honey, I don't think your mother favored her because she was the oldest; I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the fact that Ursula was actually competent and managed to accomplish her goals. Plus her magic is clearly more powerful than yours, since you have to use one of her potions to turn Melody into a mermaid.
OH MY GOD A SONG. I forgot this movie was supposed to have those. It's an upbeat little tune about learning to swim with her new tail, which quickly evolves into a duet with her mother and finding their "worlds:" Melody finding a place she belongs underwater, and Ariel keeping Melody safe. It's boring, but at least Tara Strong can sing well, and Jodi Benson can still belt it out like she could twenty years ago.
Morgana tells Melody that the spell will only last for two days, and that in order to make it permanent, she'll need the "powerful trident that was stolen from her." I'm sure you're as shocked as I was when it was revealed that she didn't just want a puppy and someone to make her pie. So off Melody goes with naught but determination and a map carved into a block of ice. Wait. That seems... poorly designed.
There aren't even words on it. Now I'm no cartographer, but that seems like a pretty major flaw for a map.
Meanwhile, Ariel has joined the search for Melody as a mermaid again, because apparently, according to Eric, "You should go. You know these waters -- and you know our daughter." Um. I'm not even sure where to begin with that one. Let's just say I agree with half that statement; I'll give you one guess which half.
Back in the arctic-- Stop. Okay look. I liked Timon and Pumbaa well enough. Timon had his moments of obnoxiousness, but Nathan Lane was likable enough to always bring it back, and Pumbaa is still my favorite character from The Lion King. But lemme tell ya, I HATE what Timon and Pumbaa did to Disney for a while. They wanted quirky, amiable sidekicks that would keep the kids entertained and distract from the lion sex happening in the background. I can understand that. But when every kid walked away singing Hakuna Matata and the Disney execs realized what they'd stumbled on, every movie afterward that was bound to fail miserably tried to shoehorn in a pair that would have the same appeal to sell more merch. Timon and Pumbaa themselves wound up with their own movie and a SATURDAY MORNING CARTOON SHOW. YEAH. THAT REALLY HAPPENED.
Why do I bring it up? Do you really have to ask?
Meet Tip and Dash, your knock-offs for the evening.
They are, as they put it, "adventurers slash explorers." That might have actually been a good way of setting them apart from the lackadaisical Timon and Pumbaa -- except that in their very first scene they attempt to save a baby penguin from a shark and completely botch the whole thing by being complete cowards. And then when the penguin family gets upset and berates them for their piss-poor job, the movie has the audacity to frame this like we should feel sorry for them. Movie, I refuse to sympathize with them when all the criticism against them is CORRECT. Also sharks don't live in the arctic. Neither do walruses. Just throwing that out there.
From there they bump into Melody, and she convinces them to take her to Atlantica, since Morgana was an idiot for carving the map into an easily-breakable piece of ice. By the way, for the record, Dash is the only likable character in this entire movie, but even then that's not saying much when you consider I'm biased because of his VA. He's the one that actually agrees to help Melody because she's "a damsel in distress," and doesn't care that she's actually a human-turned-mermaid. Come to think of it, this could have been a really good analogy for trans youth, but that probably would have been way too complicated a subject for a shitty Disney sequel.
Also I was gonna skip this part but it's stuck in my head so I'd like to introduce you to the CATCHIEST AND MOST OBNOXIOUS SONG IN ANY MOVIE EVER. Like damn! That would be an accomplishment if it wasn't so terrible. And I'm not exaggerating; I'm completely immune to It's A Small World, but THIS? This garbage sticks to me like glue. (and if you decided to skip the song you now have It's A Small World in your head so either way you have to SUFFER WITH ME)
Ahem. Moving on.
The Three Stooges here finally make it to Atlantica, just barely missing Ariel, Triton, and Flounder going the other way. Flounder, in the past twelve years, has had about five annoying kids and developed a dad belly. It's not really relevant to anything but it's just hilarious to me that even fish can have dad bellies. But there's only a half hour of this turd left, so let's keep chugging along.
On their way into the palace they bump into a piece of-- what? Fish jailbait? Jail fish bait? Eh, whatever. THEY BUMP INTO THIS KID:
Yes, as a matter of fact it was. Even though Atlantica is clearly in tropical waters. Starfish, sea urchins, and crabs all live in tropical waters, whereas penguins live in colder climates. This geography is seriously messed up. I don't think anyone on the creative team even bothered to so much as glance at a map while making this -- which would also explain the terrible ice map, I suppose.
Melody swipes the trident and heads back to Morgana's lair. Cloak and Dagger, the two manta ray minions (I know, subtle), follow behind, and Ariel catches sight of them. She and Flounder in turn follow them, discovering the witch's hiding place in the arctic. Personally my first thought was "So, we've looked everywhere actually means except there because it's cold as balls and nobody wanted to?" but Ariel's a bit more focused than I was by this point.
Ariel tries to send Flounder back, to let Triton know where they are, but Flounder, being an idiot, says he won't let her go in there alone. DUDE. GO GET HELP. Who does, in fact, go to get help? Why Scuttle, of course!
And it's all your fault, bro.
Ariel rushes in in the nick of time to stop Melody from handing over the trident, but naturally the two of them get into the argument that puts the final nail in coffin. Melody actually says "You knew how much I loved the sea!" but I'd like to refer you back to the facts. Melody and Ariel never had an honest and open conversation about, well, anything. The closest evidence we have to support this statement is that Melody thought Atlantica was just an old fish tale, which means at some point Ariel told her stories about it and the mermaids. Otherwise there's just genetics: your mother's a mermaid so you must love the sea too. That's an awfully big leap. And there's the fact that Sebastian never told Ariel about Melody's adventures outside the wall. She had zero idea about any of it. So how could she have possibly known how much Melody loved the ocean, outside of sheer guesswork?
Oh, but "you know our daughter." Well if you SAY it it MUST be true!
By the by, Melody's little realization here of "I have made a horrible mistake" when she gives Morgana the trident is just priceless.
De-licious.
Finally we've reached the big battle. Morgana builds herself a big fuck-off tower of ice, and we're ready for action.
Scuttle, in a rare moment of non-stupidity, comes soaring in, tailed by Prince Eric's ship. Before blasting it to pieces Morgana asks, "Come to join the party?" and I have to agree; where the hell have you been for the last 40 minutes, anyway, Eric? ALSO
And I present you the only funny line in the movie:
...If it feels like I'm rushing through this it's only because I am.
After getting the trident, Morgana had sealed Melody and Flounder into an ice cavern. Unfortunately for her, Melody's two days are now up, and she turns back into a human in a chamber full of water. Tip and Dash rush in to save her, and come face-to-face with a full-sized Undertow. Through a not-at-all suspenseful sequence of the shark chasing them around, they manage to trick him into ramming the ice wall trapping Melody and Flounder, and get her back up to the surface. Where she just. wakes up. No coughing water or dizziness or trouble breathing. NOPE. Her eyes open as soon as she hits air and she's good to go.
Disney: showing the lighter side of almost drowning.
As Morgana fulfills her power fantasy of getting everyone to bow down to her and shrieking "WHO'S YOUR FAVORITE NOW, MA" (yeah I'm pretty sure it's still Ursula), Melody scales the ice tower in an attempt to retrieve the trident. If nothing else, this movie shows a very inaccurate portrayal of trying to walk on ice. Unsurprisingly, Melody succeeds and tosses the trident back to Triton, who seals Morgana in a block of ice to rest forever at the bottom of the sea.
So Ursula was literally stabbed through the chest with an entire boat and died but Morgana gets punked out in a block of ice? Weak.
The family reconciles, Melody takes the whole "grandfather" thing a little too well, and the movie ends with them tearing down the wall so the humans and merpeople can interact freely from now on.
I only have two questions before I finally shut up about this stupid stupid movie:
1. So does the whole kingdom just sort of take it in stride that a) merpeople exist and b) the prince married one? 2. How can a movie that's only an hour and ten minutes long sans credits feel SO MUCH LONGER
This whole thing was ridiculous from the jump. Who was demanding a sequel to the Little Mermaid of all freaking things? Who really wanted to see sequels to any of the movies from the Disney Renaissance? And there are quite a few of them. Like I said, some of them can be pretty enjoyable if you like cheesiness. But most of them are just terrible like this one, and if you're wondering whether you'll be seeing more of the Dark Age of Disney, don't worry. Their days will come.
