okay, I just finished rewatching TGP season two (or what we have of it so far) and it’s THEORY TIME. (spoilers through 2x07.)

*Jason voice* This might sound crazy, but...I think Derek’s creation (and subsequent banishment to the depths of Janet’s boundless void) might have had something to do with Shawn becoming aware of Michael’s shenanigans. 

Now, the obvious reason for that would be because Vicky encountered Derek before the others found him in the tree, decided enough was enough, and called Michael. But...why would she? She’s using Michael’s secret to hold onto power; if Shawn found out, would he actually reward her or anything, or would he just send her off to her next menial task, like, flaying people alive or whatever? Also, this show just doesn’t go for the obvious answer.

I think something else happened. Maybe Janet had to do some hinky shit to make Derek in the first place--sure, she can “make” just about anything else, but a whole person might take some extra supplies, perhaps from elsewhere in their multiverse. Maybe, in gathering such supplies--or just in doing whatever fuckin witchcraft she had to do--she caught someone’s eye, and that person (well, demon) reported it to Shawn. She would, of course, try to lie under questioning, but we all know that doesn’t tend to go super well for her, and also Shawn probably has an extra Truth Cube somewhere, so. Yeah.

THAT SAID, if Shawn had gotten to Janet, then how would she have seemed so much like her normal self when she returned to them? Could Shawn have selectively removed her memories? Because rest assured, she’d have warned Michael if she knew. So I’m gonna assume she didn’t. So....what, then?

So...maybe DEREK tipped him off. Maybe the void-banishment didn’t work as planned, and Shawn (or one of his minions) noticed the glitch in the multiverse that is Derek’s very existence, and brought HIM in for examination. He probably doesn’t/didn’t know enough to actually tell on them, but hell, it’s Janet’s void, so he’d know what neighborhood to start taking a closer look at, and it’s not like he didn’t already have his suspicions about Michael.

November 3: The Good Place 2x07 [Derek]

A few thoughts on this week’s The Good Place because watching that episode was the only thing I did today besides working and taking an ill-advised nap.

“Stone Cold Steve Austin’s head on Tahani’s body” / “Or vice versa” = official canon confirmation that Eleanor is bi tbh. I mean she was already pretty obviously bi before and of course this isn’t actually how bi people conceive of attraction (well I can’t speak for anyone else but I don’t lol) but given that what it actually signifies is “an impartial analysis of your comments reveals that the being you would most appreciate as a significant other is a combination of a man and a woman” it’s kind of hard to refute as a narrative coming out. But people probably will because bisexuality is always conceived of as either a joke or something Very Very Serious about which we do not joke or even talk so.

I ship Chidi/Eleanor hardcore so seeing that video come back was like !!!!!!!!!! The way this story line is going combines my two favorite incompatible things: slow burns and just-get-in-bed-and-cuddle-already. Amazing. Seeing Eleanor struggle with her love feelings remains fun but I want to know more about what Chidi thinks/feels.

How is this simultaneously a bizarrely surreal show with like random penis-wind-chime 7-hour-old boyfriend substitutes and out-of-nowhere weddings and also a long-term meditation on core philosophical questions? Gah Philosophy 101 classes should just show the Trolley Problem episode because reading that work was one of the core parts of my freshman year experience and, even though I was never that deep into philosophy, moral or otherwise, still the show gives me Major Flashbacks on occasion.

I feel like TGP’s chapter-format and its (sometimes frustrating!) habit of ending each episode on the eve of the next episode’s story line (aka how I ended up watching the entire first season in 2 days) makes the term “cliff hanger” not totally appropriate but given that format/habit and the almost two month break before the next ep, I knew there was going to be something AAAHHH -inducing for the final scene but I’m such Chidi/Eleanor trash that I kind of assumed it would be about them. Which was dumb because the actual cliff-hanger-thing was obviously telegraphed. Still, I did go AAAHHH.

I shipped Jason/Janet back in the day and I still ship Jason/Janet but I also bizarrely ship Jason/Tahani, even though I also find it weird trying to conceive of Jason in a serious adult romantic relationship at all but also I’m totally on board with his obvious affection for his partners so yeah I’m enjoying this story line basically even though I don’t know why. Maybe I’m just really easy. I watch something casually and suddenly any shot of a couple cuddling in bed and being sweet (Would you like to try....reabsorbing me?) has me going it’s true loveeeee.  (Nevertheless in the case of C/E it actually is true love for sure.)

I think it’s cute how Jason just really obviously wants to get married.
