i haven't read the isekai one yet but official's blessing is definitely my favourite one. i really like xie lian as a main character. i really enjoy xie lians and hua chengs dynamic. i really liked the side characters. and most of all i really like how almost all the serious confrontations have this sort of, looney toons type insanity to them. how the actual seriously depressing and horrifying moments are ones you can see coming but still shock you because it was way worse than you'd thought it'd be. how it'll immediately hard switch to something very silly after a very serious scene where one or more people die. it's..very lighthearted in a way? like you can feel xie lian's "it is what it is" 800 years of acceptance radiating off the words. also just, the whole him snapping out of his murderous rage because one person was kind to him hit extremely close to home. that theres still kindness even though the world is cruel. and oh god i just realised that was also a parallel to him saving hua cheng and one act of kindness that fundamentally changed how his story was going to play out im gonna be sick theres so many fucking parallels in this novel xie lian im going to get you with my hands

I'm still in the trenches of reading book three and I can't get pass this scene 😩😩 In one way this was so lovely and heartfelt and yet so bittersweet? Mmh I hope I can do this scene justice because it's been living in my head rent free for the last two weeks!

For Hua Cheng this is a pivoting point in his faith, it literally flips his life upside down and sets him off to become his daixia's most important believer.

But for Xie Lian this comes right after an honestly terrible day. No matter where he went or who he talked to, they had already determined that he wouldn't do much; couldn't do much. Although he put so much effort into bringing back water to his people, the masses where bored with it; almost angry at it. In the end, he could only achieve one thing that day and it was to feed a child. And even then he was chastised for it :(.

I want to put some symbolism in this but we shall see if I'm able to pull that off 😅.

i was today years old when i realized that hua cheng's ascension was him protecting xie lian's dream; the biggest question i had about the story of his ascension has always been "why would he protect a bunch of strangers?" and, obviously the answer i gave myself was "for xie lian, because he still wanted to protect the people of his god".

i had the answer right in front of my eyes and couldnt see it. we are blinded by xl's pov and tend to forget thay hua cheng is in fact evil, he did a lot of bad things that granted him his influence over the three realms. yet for his god, for his lover, he managed to ASCEND in heaven while already being a GHOST. he sacrified himself, a part of himself or even better, the part of himself he hated the most so that he could persevere xie lian's dream of saving the common people. his soul was about to shatter but instead of feeding on the livings trapped in mount tonglu (they would have died either way since no human being can survive that place), not only he decided not to arm them - meaning almost certain death - but he decided to sacrifice himself AND protect them. and all this was AFTER the wu ming arc. after he watched xie lian losing himself, seeing him thirsting for revenge and doing all that stuff, after seeing that just one single person decided to stop and help his god. and this isnt something granted coming from a person like hua cheng, but the very thing is that he undersrands xie lian's true self, and that's why he did what he did. he probably saw all that was happening and decided not to intervene because he knew what xie lian needed, and saw what that one person meant for xl.
