Readalong is stalled for a bit, but I promise it will resume eventually. I decided kind of late to do a re-read (well, re-listen to the audio books) for my other fandom series before the new novel comes out February 16. I have to put 5-6 hours a day into it to finish on time, so I haven’t had time to read TGCF (even though I really really really really really want to read TGCF)!

If I make my goal of finishing February 10, that gives me 5 days to enjoy TGCF before the novel is released and that fandom demands my focus for a bit :)

I talk about Mastodon every so often, so I tend to want a quick "and here's how to join" guide I can link to. Here it is! (updated Sep 2024)

First: the fandom side of Mastodon is great. There aren't a lot of us, but it's cozy and well-moderated. We have nice conversations and fun events. I'm currently running a daily mini prompt game, we've had ship bingo games go around, I want to get back to running character tournaments, and danmei read- and watch-alongs pop up every so often (there's a TGCF readalong ongoing). It's a bit like a cross between Tumblr and a Discord server.

Also: YOU CAN POST PORN. Full-on cocks in holes and everything! Or you can easily avoid it, because marking it as NSFW is required, and the filtering options are excellent.

Anyway. How to join:

The server I recommend is blorbo.social. It's an 18+ multifandom server, and it allows personal posts as well. The mods are fandom people who care about fandom creators (attributing works, preventing harassment, etc.) There is a 3,000 character limit per post (about 750 words, a bit longer than this post).

If that sounds good, here is a walk-through to minimize confusion. Of course, please do what you want, but I find that a lot of people want to be told what to do here!

Don't look at the app store yet.

Sign up on the website (blorbo.social/auth/sign_up) in your browser. No need to write an essay, just mention fandom

Wait for your approval email

NOW check the app store. If/when you want an app, search for "Ice Cubes" (on iOS) or "Moshidon" (on Android) (not "Mastodon")

When the app asks, your "server" or "instance" is "blorbo.social"

(You can also just use the website - I'm adding app instructions because everyone seems to want them!)

Add something to your profile to show that you're a real person, just like on Tumblr: you can add a profile picture and bio, and you can make your first post! You can introduce yourself and list tags for your favorite fandoms (it can be as simple as "hiiiii I like #TGCF!"). Pinning that post is also good.

Follow a bunch of people and hashtags, since there's no algorithm. You can search for "xieliansbignaturals", if you'd like to follow me!

From there, you'll figure it out! I'm very happy to answer questions, but I don't want to load this post with so much information that it's overwhelming.

There was something else I got spoiled but I can’t remember and ah! Well I know MuQing has a mother and that may or may not be very important, like I know she exists but not for what purpose

omg you're making me think that qi rong is kind of the opposite of xue yang for me? XY has the genius and charisma and tragic backstory, but in execution, he squicks me out. QR on the other hand is an annoying fuck, an annoying fuck, and an annoying fuck, but in execution, he's, ,, hilariously charming??? like don't get me wrong he's a fucking bastard in every way but i don't mind his presence at all lmao. as for his redemption arc, i'm not too mad 'cause i don't think he was meant to be redeemed in a way that matters, so whether or not it succeeded can totally be up to the reader.

oooh yeah the banyue situation!! confused as in what happens? it's so funny 'cause Dafan Mountain and Banyue kind of exist in the same category in my mind, where the first and second times I read their respective texts, the thematic resonance didn't click for me, and they both felt like utility arcs than anything that stuck with me? But that's just 'cause i'm illiterate. The Banyue arc totally makes sense now w the revelations for XL and the parallels with Banyue herself. Maybe I still don't totally get Dafan Mountain but that's fine

I LOVE THE XIAN LE TRIO SO MUCH. Mu Qing is so fucking good. I reread the scene where he brings medicine to XL under house arrest, and he's like, 7000% schadenfreude "omg, you got revenge? you went out there and done did the dirty and you're not as glowing and good as i have an issue with you being?" He's Shen Jiu's best friend and that's just the truth, bitch boys unite.

I’ve been reading tgcf at work and well I just reached ch. 35, i love everything I’ve seen so far and gosh I really like the wind master a lot ❤️❤️❤️ but I just can’t help but feel uneasy with Jun Wu and idk why djfkgkg like the way he talks to xl just makes me stand on edge… he kinda gives me the creeps a bit and I can’t help but think he will cause trouble </3 and I’m so excited for xl and hc to meet again gosh I’m already loving them a lot and, according to my iPad, I’ve only read 16% of the book, that’s barely anything and I’m very terrified of whatever happens next and the ring oh my god alright well I’ve come totally in blind to the series so idk shit and my best guess is, since ashes can be turned into something else, the ring might have something to do with them, oooooor maybe not and it might be another item or whatever

I think the donghua's really vibrant, and it interprets San Lang in a way that doesn't necessarily come through in the novel? At least in his Book 1 appearances. I'm interested if you see any differences, or if anything in the book has been unexpected so far!!!
