However, there's more than enough amusing entertainment to enjoy despite some characters not having as much to do and plenty of red herrings.

I am so so so glad I finally tested Covid negative and got to see The Marvels in IMAX!!! This movie is so visually rich with so many tiny details and gorgeous colors and like. Teyonah Paris’s freckles!!! Brie Larson’s hands!!!! And I got a flerkitten promo! His name is Duck.

This will definitely rank as one of the most underrated gems of the year. It seems to have been lost among the shuffle of bigtime summer blockbusters. Netflix has a genuine hit for anyone looking outside the mainstream cinema fun.

It blends some genres together with near perfection. You could classify it as a comedy, a thriller, and a sci-fi adventure all rolled into one movie. John Boyega stars as Fontaine, a small town drug dealer mixed up with the wrong crowds. After he visits Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx) and is shot and left for dead, Fontaine wakes up in his bed as though nothing had happened.

The mystery that surrounds this plot is rather simple, but the way it is presented is what keeps you invested in these characters. Foxx is hilarious, as is Teyonah Paris, in a supporting role. Boyega plays off of them well as the hardened type who, after learning the truth, desperately wants answers.

There is a ton of political and social commentary about how we are being manipulated by the mass media and product consumption. This film takes a lot of conspiracy theories and rolls them up to make a wild and whacky film about cultural exploitation.

What it does well is remind you that while there is all this existential stuff happening, the core three are grounded in the reality they have been living. They truly have zero clue what the scope of this thing is until they are smack right in the middle of it. That is where the talent really shines through from the three actors. The comedy continues, but some major character growth also occurs, which allow all of them all the chance to shine.

It is a very engaging movie from start to finish. You can watch it and enjoy it for the various things it does. It provides comedic commentary on some poignant social issues, and it also gives you an adult R Rated mystery vibe as the core three constantly remind us "They are not detectives."

The Marvels (2023)

First off, the best CBM (comic book movie) in 2023 remains Across The Spiderverse (my favourite live action CBM remains GotG3).

But The Marvels is a really fun, action packed film that had us laughing throughout. Really enjoyed the fight sequence choreography in particular. This film also looks good (except 1 "Superman" flying scene at the start).

For the first time since Shang Chi & No Way Home in 2020, there were great cameos that actually helped make it feel like part of the greater connected universe something that's been sorely lacking in the MCU since 2020. Yes Dr Strange had cameos, but most of those were nothing more.

However, there's a scene about 60% into this rather short, quick paced film that feels superfluous & wholly unnecessary: a singing, colourful "Disney" esque planet, which pulled me out of the film completely.

And I can understand the desire to tap into the K Drama, K Pop world's recent surge in popularity, but Park Seo Joon (What's Wrong with Secretary Kim, Itaewon Class) can't speak English, and it shows.

Ok Taecyeon (Vincenzo, Bring it on Ghost), Ahn Hyo-seop (Abyss, Business Proposal, A Time Called You) are both fluent in English. Heck, Song Joong Ki's English would have sufficed.

Finally, it's absolutely baffling that a problem Captain Marvel solves at the end, the quick solution somehow escaped her realization for 30 years??

Despite these complaints, this is a really fun, face paced, but flawed film. Brie Larsen isn't given enough to do, Teyonah Paris *is* Monica, but Iman Vellani steals the show.

Clark bringing it up to you, another meta, and Bruce to Selina. Clark blushes and fumbles through the confession, but eventually he asks what you think. Shock hits you first, but then the more you think about it, the more appealing it becomes.

The 4 of you decide that this will be a way to explore yourself and your partner better. Almost like a couples retreat! Although you all are excited to learn new tips, tricks, and honest feedback that you wouldn’t otherwise get, you all agree it’s best to come up with rules and safe words ahead of time.

Let’s meet our cast shall we? :

Y/N :

The Jack of all trades. Making a name for herself along the eastern seaboard, Y/N is a black freelance artist who works as a museum curator. Her power allows her to have superhuman strength, speed and endurance, while her meta gene allows her to bend, absorb, and manipulate solar energy. Much like Clark, her power comes from the sun. Known as the Golden Gladiator, her heroics are only brought up in times of severe crisis. She often prefers her civilian life and the privileges it affords, as her secret identity has only been shared with those she can trust. Wild card : Likes when she and Clark can let go of being cautious and careful. Since they both have similar energy sources, their lovemaking can actually be a way to transfer solar radiation. Whether it’s in the middle of a battle or at home, this has proven to be extremely rewarding over the course of their relationship. Because the two of them are metas, they can focus on each other rather than their ✨destructive✨ actions. Extra Bonus : Y/N is curious to see how this experience will improve her skills and impact their relationship.

Note : Although this is not an OC, as I write Y/N I am imagining some of Teyonah Paris’s characteristics.

Kal / Clark :

Strong and Sensitive. This big boy is the definition of the “Country boy I love youuu!” Vine. Between his responsibilities as a reporter and as earths biggest hero, he always makes sure he has time for you. His biggest asset is his attention to your senses. Over the last few years of marriage, you’ve found that he can always tell how you’re feeling before the words even leave your mouth. His size comes as an added bonus, but his wild card is using it in his knack for overstimulation. As an attentive partner, he’ll make sure that all your needs are taken care of and catered to at the utmost importance. All he asks in return is that you try to keep up with him. :) King of Aftercare. Will talk you through it while showering you with his praise. Both physical touch and words of affirmation are his ways of showing his devotion. Extra bonus : He becomes a slight tease when you’re loopy. Won’t let you cum until he thinks you deserve it. Will make you beg in the best way. Has a knack for public play and shibari. All his travel and escapades has made him extremely aware of his likes and dislikes, so it’s very unlikely you’ll surprise him with any requests. He’s usually playing brat tamer so this will be a nice change of pace. Wild card : Is not afraid of his sexuality or pushing his limits. He shows his adoration in gifts rather than words. His past consistent lovers would usually be showered in parting gifts, for example Selina’s Tiara collection. You would be no exception to this rule and in his aftercare you will look up things you want. He will get annoyed if you speak up about prices; and as punishment he’ll make you add more to your cart. Selina :

Sensual and Clever. Selina will play her partners like a symphony. The woman is the perfect match for the man who plans for everything. I guess I have to give credit, I’ve never seen anyone else make this inane claim against Lizzie. 

Perhaps against my better judgement, I decided to read up on Lizzie’s relationships with her PoC costars to see if any of them thought she was a bigot. And surprise surprise, they don’t. In fact, Anthony Mackie has said she’s a joy to be around, Teyonah Paris has said a ton of nice things about her from their time on WandaVision, Xochitl Gomez has straight-up said she loved being around her, and even Don Cheadle has said she’s a sweetheart. Look it up.

So yeah, I have no idea what this person’s “evidence” is, but I’m gonna go ahead and say it’s some BS.

Yay friend yay! John, Jamie, and Teyonah are always brilliant, but they were truly electric in this. And Junebug! Him calling Fontaine a Squidward was so valid lmao. I loved Yo-yo and all her Nancy Drew knowledge.

It looks like they had so much fun making it. I'll probably watch it again because there was so much happening, I'm sure I didn't even catch it all!

They Cloned Tyrone is so good like really good. This needs to be Top 1 in Netflix right now. Everybody go watch it right now. The themes the film touches was clever. John Boyega and Teyonah Paris and Jaime Foxx are a powerhouse delivering stellar performances.
