First Impression: Okitsura: Fell in Love with an Okinawan Girl, but I Just Wish I Know What She’s Saying

Teruaki Nakamura is a high school boy whose family just moved down from the Japanese mainland to the sunny southern island of Okinawa, and even in that short time, he’s fallen in love with a bubbly classmate named Hina Kyan. There’s just one catch: he can’t talk to her—literally. Hina defaults to the old Okinawan Japanese dialect of Uchinaguchi and has a *very* thick accent to boot. She’s effectively unintelligible to a mainlander who grew up on textbook Japanese. But luckily, Hina’s BFF Kana Higa is usually on hand to translate. Of course, there’s a wrinkle in play given that Kana is crushing on Teruaki, so we’ve got some love triangulation here. Doki-doki and hijinks both ensue as Teruaki manages to get hit with every case of Okinawan culture shock in the book, from activating the “Higa” Trap Card to accidentally shouting “I love you” in Uchinaguchi, to getting buried under a small mountain of sata andagi donuts. The episode ends with a hint the next episode will include… Honestly, we don’t know what, because Hina explains in Uchinaguchi, which the subtitlers have transliterated but not translated as part of the joke…

Five years is a long time in professional wrestling, it turns out.

With this post, the Strong Style Story blog is five years old today. (The Twitter account turned 5 last night, the podcast will do its 5th Anniversary Show next episode.) You can read the introductory post here, in which I talk about Hiroshi Tanahashi & then-Young Lion Yohei Komatsu (YOH for those who don't recognize his government name) showing up in DDT for a match against HARASHIMA & Ken Ohka. Within a few weeks, we (well, *I*) would talk quite a bit about what the future of New Japan Pro Wrestling was going to be like after Shinsuke Nakamura, AJ Styles, Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows departed for WWE.

It turns out, the answer was "pretty OK," as the company weathered the storm, made new main eventers in Kenny Omega, Tetsuya Naito & Katsuyori Shibata, two of whom would be faces of the company for years to come (the other one having to quit wrestling following one of the most gruesome events to ever happen in a NJPW ring).

(The second post on this blog was complaining about how NJPW [and CMLL at the time] were overlooking the popularity of Los Ingobernables. This would turn out to be a common theme over the years to come as well...)

But the company has evolved, year on year, since I've been covering it. There is no way to really quantify just how much things have changed in New Japan over the last five years. Between sold out shows in the USA, and COVID-19 lockdown, there have been ups and downs, creatively and business-wise. Wrestlers have debuted, and left, either for pastures new (i.e. Nakamura et al above, the Elite departing to form All Elite Wrestling), or retired either after a storied career (eg. Jushin Thunder Liger), or due to injuries (we still all miss Katsuya Kitamura, and me personally, I do think Teruaki Kanemitsu and Tetsuhiro Yagi coulda woulda shoulda. Whatever DID happen with Takumi Honjo or Mitsuhide Hirasawa [Captain New Japan]?).

It's clear that the New Japan of November 2015 and the New Japan of November 2020 are completely different beasts. Back then, there was One Story -- Hiroshi Tanahashi v. Kazuchika Okada. Now NJPW has a Big 5... 6, if you count EVIL, who is now on the splash page for NJPWWorld along with Tanahashi, Okada, Naito, a returned Kota Ibushi and Jay White. As the company got bigger around the world, suddenly there was something for everyone. Even YOSHI-HASHI, or Yoshinobu Kanemaru, or even Yoshitatsu (now wrestling for All Japan Pro Wrestling) have their fans. And of course, NJPW and DDT are no longer partnering at this stage.

For myself, doing this, and the podcast, has opened quite a few new horizons. Getting to be at the G1 Special shows in Long Beach with my co-host @damascenocs​ as well as numerous other folk from the podcast, Twitter, and even real life, was a very special event that I will cherish forever. I've made some real friends for life doing this, and it's humbling to say that. And yes, I've stepped in it a few times on Twitter too (and if I have ever caused you any pain or grief, I do apologize unreservedly). But overall, even at times when we nearly quit the podcast, or I thought about winding down this blog as it was getting to be a bit of a chore, this has been an overwhelmingly positive experience. I never would have expected this to be such a core part of my creative activity for the last five years, but I am grateful for it. It especially came at a time when I was feeling very down about some other creative ventures (writing comic books, specifically), and this has helped a lot dealing with some of my frustrations there as well.

I don't know if I will make it another five years on this blog, but I'm not planning to end it anytime soon either. Thank you one and all for reading this, listening to our podcast, or following me on Twitter, over the years. It's been a pleasure.
