First impression: A little bit of a brat. Somewhat understandable between juggling teenage angst and adjusting to Ron's, uh, Ron-ness (affectionate <3), but would it kill him to be a little nicer about it? :/

Impression now: THAT'S MY FUCKING SON AND I MISS HIM TERRIBLY!!! So sick and twisted of Anthony to do that to him 😭😭😭 He's been through so much and he just wants to be there for his stepdaughter like his stepfather was there for him and!!!! Dissolves into a puddle of tears.

Favorite moment: Either the entire Thing that was the end of Tower of Terry or when he spotted Scary picking up the lunch he made for her and smiled about it :') I love him so much

Idea for a story: Hhhhhh this is one I've been meaning to actually write for a bit and have talked about a ton on Discord but! AU with seasoned vampire Terry Jr attempting to take fledgling vampire Scary under his wing. Scary is Not Having It, obviously (and is even MORE adamantly against it once she figures out he's coincidentally the new guy her mom's been seeing), but eventually she falls super ill bc she hasn't had blood in awhile and so Terry guiltily takes care of her while she's too out of it to argue. It only further complicates things that they were both Turned by the same man (Willy Stampler, obviously). They end up having a bit of a heart-to-heart on what it is to be a monster and how to live with yourself when you have to kill to stay alive sometimes and when you have the knowledge that you'll outlive everyone you know and love. Terry has no idea if she'll remember any of this conversation once she gets a good day's rest, but it feels like something of a breakthrough to him :')

Unpopular opinion: Hmmm idk the general opinion the fandom has bc it seems like things are mixed rn. The only "unpopular" option that's coming to mind for him right now is him just. Not coming back. But I do want him to come back in some way, so??? Hm. Oh! I think it would be cool if he switched classes between seasons from a caster to more of a fighter - not ONLY would it explain why Anthony is constantly referring to him as a "swordboy" and why he hasn't cast a single spell, it also gives him another parallel with Scary - they have both given up some element of the past selves (Scary, her peppy persona, Terry, his wizardry) in order to pursue what they think will serve them best. Also, it's quite possible that Terry associates his talent for learning magic with his trauma from Faerun and is attempting to distance himself from that (his mother is a therapist, after all, so I think that if one of the kiddads is going to make a single choice in favor of their own mental wellbeing, it's probably him). Anyway. Is this anything.

Favorite relationship: Terry and Scary I think! They just mirror each other in SUCH interesting and complex ways and episode 36 has only further solidified that for me 🥰

Favorite headcanon: Not so much a headcanon as a series of predictions, but I LOVE the idea of Terry coming back as a vampire. I also saw someone mention the possibility of Terry coming back as an Aasimar, which would be soooooo fucking neat, especially since it draws an interesting dichotomy between himself and Nicky. Angel/demon imagery and all that. I can already feel the desire to make Terrick content if that ends up being the case. That said, I hope he comes back and I hope he comes back Wrong :)))

- Terry Jr. started writing the journal the teens read, before the forgotten realms trip, it was something his therapist told him might help with how angry he used to be, he just ended up using it to also record all of the things that happened in the forgotten realms (it went from angsty teen bs to horror stories real quick)

- Nicky has a minions tattoo

- Grant would skip most of his PE classes except when they were playing soccer

- Lark has beef with one of Normal's teachers at Teen High because Normal said she was being rude and stressing him out (he went to Norm's parent teacher conferences just to threaten her, Sparrow had to hold him back)

- Nicky once drank a glow stick, not on a dare or anything, he just wanted to know if it would make him glow (it didnt)

- Sparrow learned to paint and draw from Mercedes

- when Lark pisses people off who he actually doesnt want to be pissed at him, he'll bake them a pie (for some reason thats always his go to for apologies, luckily Sparrow really likes pie)

okay. let's talk about black terry jr.

TL;DR: terry jr is black. that is something that should not be erased. regardless of your access to or willingness to search for the canon material that confirms this, you should not be depicting him as white. whitewashing terry by refusing to think of him as black creates an unsafe space for our black community members, and you should re-examine your personal biases if you choose to insist on continuing to see terry as white.

i will concede that it is something that you might not spot if you listen through the podcast casually. it's something that i didn't know was actually official in any capacity until recently. and i would like to note that i do not have and have never had access to the dndads patreon. i have not listened to any of the teen talks in full (even the ones released to the public. it's just not my jam.), and any information or spitballing contained within is something that i have either been told second-hand or am completely unaware of. i also didn't look at the official poster (the "everything is alright" poster) that depicted both terry jr and samantha as black.

but the fact of the matter remains that terry jr and samantha are black and have been acknowledged as such within the source material.

once again, i myself didn't seek this information out enough to know it was official canon. so then why have i always depicted them as black anyway?

well when i started engaging with the fandom, i saw what was being presented to me in the fandom was overwhelmingly that terry was indeed black or at least popularly interpreted to be black. and my first and only thought was that that was nice. so i decided to roll with it.

if i really wanted to check if that was canon and it being canon was important to me, i could always have asked around. i could've sought out information from official sources. because if they were black and i just missed it in some way, i would've wanted to check myself. especially because doing so would lead to whitewashing.

but i didn't feel the need to do that because i think that just the added racial diversity was really cool to see on its own.

for argument's sake, there is still the possibility that you'd think it is simply just popular fanon. let's say you chose to not check for yourself whether or not he was canonically black. or let's say that, for whatever reason, you think that what is available isn't enough to sufficiently deem him canonically black. so let's discuss why terry should still be depicted as black even if it was "just" fanon and there were no official artworks to go off of.

i am not of the opinion that fanon in general should be taken as gospel. in fact, there are quite a few things within dndads fanon itself that i personally disagree with and choose not to engage with. the reason why this interpretation in particular is a sore spot is the question of why, after seeing the popular portrayal and recognizing the ability to create racial diversity in a space where a good amount of appearances and identities can be up for interpretation, someone would still choose to depict him as white.

why do you choose to depict him as white? do you have any personal biases that make you think that he would or should be white? do you think that it is unimportant or inconsequential to not depict him as a person of color?

what would be so compelling about making him white that you would choose to go against this interpretation? why is it so important that you continue to see him as white?

who are you ignoring in the process?

i do not think it is deliberately malicious to initially think that terry jr is white. it is the unfortunate truth that white tends to be considered the default. but it begins to rub me the wrong way when anyone chooses to stick with that idea when presented with any evidence or argument to the contrary.

though i will admit that i am not black, i am still a person of color. and i think that creating a fandom space where we can highlight, create, and celebrate racial variety means creating a space where people of color feel safer. and because i would like to uplift the black fandom member who tried to voice their own personal take on this matter, i would like to link back to [this post from vivalapersistence] as the reason why i felt compelled to talk about this in the first place.

i don't want to talk over him, but i want to point out his statement that having this kind of solid representation is important and means something to him as a black person in this community. erasing terry as black means that you would be, intentionally or not, erasing and silencing black voices. it takes away that element of representation within the fandom and does real harm to the black people within when you decide that that representation isn't important. there are real racial connotations to the argument here, and it's frankly a little callous to pretend like there's not.

so maybe let's be nice to the BIPOC in our community spaces, okay?

If you browse far back enough on this blog, in the past I used to headcanon him as something of an orphan 'Bruce Wayne, inherited my wealth at an extremely young age and left to come to my own conclusions about the world...so happens most of these conclusions were extremely unhinged because I had no actual guidance or parental figures' kind of character because his parents either died, suicided or self destructed in some way and by proxy, Terry Silver became a billionaire long before he's ever become an adult (and him going to Vietnam could've been acting from an act of sheer patriotism, volunteering or Terry just yearning for a devoted community he no longer had), but now, as things stand, since I'm not making any predictions, Terry might've personally eclipsed his father somehow, removed him from power, outwitted him, terminated him or a whole Succession type drama that would put Logan Roy and his children to shame went on sometime before the timeline of The Karate Kid ever took place...which seems plausible.

I imagine Terry's father was his first ever rival in life.

That he's the first person Terry's ever beaten at the game of power grabbing, the first person he's ever cast down and the first person he's ever stepped over before he himself could've been stepped over --- it's a dog eat dog world; it's very plausible he had a hand in ending his own father or his father's influence, but since Terry does almost everything but outright murder (...or does he?) I almost imagine Silver Jr. spending the remainder of his days in a closed sanatorium for the ultra wealthy somewhere, maybe in the aftermath of some severe stroke or some sort of disability caused by none other than Terry himself, the result of which is him witnessing his son outsmarting him and taking everything over and being unable to handle it mentally. The sadism of that. Dear papa is alive but he can't move, stand, see or even fight. Matches Terry's philosophy and combat style perfectly. As for his mother? I envision she was out of the picture long before that; either having died, left or simply never having been tremendously present. Or maybe Terry was taken from her by a domineering, powerful father with way more influence than she will ever have and Terry simply never forgave that, vengeance being inneminent the minute he grew up enough to scheme?

In any case, doubt any of them were there for him as late as the 80's.

We will never know, but we sure can speculate.

dndads s2ep45 spoilers

re: that one quote that absolutely emotionally obliterated a decent chunk of the fandom

alright fuckin bear with me i have some Thoughts and Feelings about particularly how the Close-Foster-Swifts deal with a) parenting and b) intergenerational trauma Anthony: 'As you're saying this, without even wanting it to, tears are rolling down your cheeks. And in that moment, you, and Taylor, and Nick all realise... That there is no fixing this. That this is as good as it's going to get. That you are stuck with each other in the forms that you are now.' this fucking DESTROYED ME and, from what i can tell, a lot of other people in the fandom also. i think this brings up some really important points that resonate w/ me personally about intergenerational trauma, and that are super important to talk about like with the wilsons and the oaks, they manage to (in varying degrees) realise what they did wrong, or what they could do better, and actively try to do better. they actively try to go out of their way to fix things, which is great! breaking that cycle is important, and it takes a while, but they're trying. with the stamplers (+ marlowes), specifically ron and terry jr, they do the 'acknowledging i havent been good enough' to 'trying my best to be what you deserve' pipeline and its Beautiful. and we get a little of that with terry jr and scary too, with terry jr just trying to do his best and scary slowly coming around to realise that she does, actually, care about her stepdad. and its so wholesome and good. it really pays homage to the ron and terry jr relationship i feel, where they end up before he died (F). BUT THE CLOSE/FOSTER/SWIFT FAMILY. i fucking. it hurts. but its the one that hits the closest to home. 'This is as good as it's going to get' fucking resonated with me. im sure it resonated with a lot of people. intergenerational trauma and the effects it has on people is such a core theme of dndads, and the way its handled so differently through each family line is honestly artful. but an important part of the story of intergenerational trauma is when it's not something that you can fix, or go back and apologise for, or something that you can become better from. sometimes trauma just is. sometimes you can't recover from it. families will break up, lineages will die out, stories and lives will be forgotten. and as tragic as that is, as much as it hurts, it's so real. in a way, its a double-edged sword that they all still talk to each-other, that they still cling to what they have, what they wanted to have. especially in the case of Taylor, who does spend a lot of the series with questions about his dad but ultimately thinking he's pretty neat, to then break down to wishing there was time travel so Nicky could be there for him, so they could re-do childhood. i just. screams. thats such a pivotal moment for him. to finally come to terms with and admit the fact that no, things aren't okay, this isn't what he wanted, and if given the chance he would go back and fix them himself. that his father, and his father's father, have failed to do it, and now it falls upon his shoulders. (this also resonates very well with the whole 'our parents unleashed the doodler and both our grandparents and parents failed to fix it so now that's our burden to bear') i wonder if we'll ever get to know if the teens from this series go on to have families. if Lincoln ever introduces his children to grandpa Grant, or if Normal ever feels, well. normal enough to even consider the possibility of raising kids. if Scary ever takes her children to visit Terry Jr's grave, or tells them about his exploits, or recounts to them the things he did for her before she grew to appreciate him. i wonder if Taylor will ever even consider the concept of having a family, upon looking back like this at his own, upon knowing first-hand the stakes if he gets it wrong. would he think that he can break the cycle? that he could be better? or is it, truly, as good as it's going to get?

“Why Glenn Close Deserved His Kid”

because yes, I am enough of a nerd to write two essays upon request but not enough to outline before I type, so you know... my hot takes (/s) on Dndads Glenn Close (not the actress) under the read more

Other people have talked about Glenn earlier (nick-close’s good takes on the whole and other good individual posts on Tumblr) and more articulately than me (ajaystillblue for example), so this isn’t my own initial, or likely original in some parts, thoughts. But still, as with good analysis, people point out details and you start to think about them on your own. So:

1) Glenn is a single father, and there is the idea that fathers are essentially their kid’s babysitter that the other fathers, with their wives, have leniency to accept or reject. Is there a father who takes care of their kid over 75% of the time? Hard to say, but it is not indicated. (As much as I like Ron, at the start of the podcast taking care of Terry Jr. is likely, at max, 15% to Samantha’s 85% in childcare duties. Now imagine Ron as a single father at the start of this podcast. Yeah.) Glenn doesn’t have another person. His father is dead. He doesn’t mention his mom, friends, or siblings. It is literally him and his thirteen year old, who opens up emotionally less than Glenn does despite Glenn asking to check up on him (ep 30, 38). Glenn hates people forcing conversation and hates showing emotion in front of people (ep 23’s conversation about Morgan, where Glenn explains why he wears a wedding ring despite being a widower and then immediately tries to cover sadness and move on by going, ‘Chicks dig married men haha’; ep 26 letting everyone hug and keep everyone grounded with ‘they aren’t dead yet’, which gives Ron focus; ep 66’s intervention that he flips back on Henry). For the same reason he hates people forcing conversations, he treats Nick how he wants to be treated (which isn’t healthy but Glenn keeps things bottled). It feels a bit like ‘fake it until you make it’ except Glenn has sort of become that dog meme of ‘everything is fine’ as the house burns around him. But he doesn’t come across that way! And he doesn’t defend himself ever from the other dads! (On ep 39 he just laughs off Henry telling his sons not to listen to Glenn despite Glenn distracting Lark and Sparrow as much as Darryl. There actually is this whole other thought I have about Lark and Glenn having a nephew-uncle relationship because Glenn takes Lark seriously, tries to understand him, and tries to accommodate his wants in a safe way unlike Henry, but that’s an aside.)

2) Glenn and Nick both actively lie to each other. Glenn has been telling Nick that he is on tour in non-holiday time with his band when he has actually been DJing alone. (An image that keeps haunting me is Glenn in a cheap hotel, calling/receiving a call from Nick and pretending he isn’t alone and ‘they’re getting into trouble with the law again ayyy!’ And it’s just Glenn pretending he isn’t alone, asking if Nick is okay when Nick is also alone, both missing the other and not feeling like there is any benefit to saying so because Glenn has chosen to support his son through DJing, something he can stand to do as a career and is good at, until GCT tour rolls around and he can do what he loves again.) With the facts about all of Glenn’s road shenanigans versus Freddie’s one dad fact of ‘The most damage Glenn ever caused a hotel was stealing a $15 wine corkscrew’, I’ve decided to doubt Glenn went to Disney World alone often, if at all, without Nick. Glenn assuming Nick sells laser pointers like how Glenn canonically sold laser points and weed in high school and could feasibly buy him a drone feels accurate though. (Aside, the Talking Dads episode where Freddie said at thirteen, Glenn smoked weed and listened to music alone in his room as a hobby is just... geesh, Freddie.)

Deciding to argue for Glenn as a good person and a good parent is just pointing out breadcrumbs where the cool guy persona cracks or there is an indication something is going on below the surface. Like Glenn’s surprise in ep 1 that Nick smokes and slightly discomfort with Nick getting the weed from him. Like ep 14, being the only dad to say Terry Jr. shouldn’t see his father’s rotting body. Like ep 18 when Grant points out that he doesn’t vape and Glenn says quietly, ‘Nick told me everyone at his school vaped...’ like Glenn is starting to piece together that Nick lies at times. Like ep 38 when Nick is implied to stop playing with the other kids to air guitar by himself (to not appear childish or uncool in front of Glenn?) and Glenn takes him at his word about being good. Like ep 39 of telling the twins how to smoke the wrong way. Like Glenn’s entire decision to not orphan Nick and protecting/accepting Nicolas’s decision to leave with Jodie as he proceeds to get more self-destructive in provoking Willy and seek out his father for revenge.

And there is something to be said about how Glenn does not think he can return to the relationship he had with Nicolas/Nick like how his father cannot be forgiven. Bill destroyed his life and took everything in Glenn’s eyes, but Glenn doesn’t stop Nicolas from leaving him with a down-nod and middle fingers because Glenn doesn’t feel able to argue.

(I look at Walter the Immoral who could push back at random mistakes not being his fault and Glenn silently mourning the loss of his son and have written where they talk because Glenn needs someone to just blatantly say, “The trial was unfair. The punishment was overblown. You deserved to have the changes in you acknowledged.”)

3) There is a meta acknowledgement that Glenn is the comic relief character. Freddie has talked on other D&D podcasts/shows how he always wanted to play a character who found mall ninja weapons in an apocalyptic setting and became convinced he found ancient martial arts secrets and also how for a period in his life he lived in the bizarre realm of ‘professional Guitar Hero player’ and ‘popular YouTuber’. Glenn is a combination of that desire to play a character who is ridiculous at his core and in a way to sort through that experience (which feels like I’m analyzing Freddie Wong the Person, and I’m genuinely not intending to. What I mean though is) Freddie is the player who knows when to drop a Dez Nuts joke and blow away the main villain. Freddie knows when his character, the first major character to do so, is dying his last words need to assure people he got the better joke in to lighten the mood. It works super well in keeping the podcast light! It buoys up the mood!

The meta approach just also translates into Glenn’s behavior and words though, so Glenn is letting himself be called the worst dad without arguing and make jokes in tense moments and be a character who gets Willy high in ep 29 as a distraction before being tortured for it. Glenn is the character who had the most death saves because Freddie’s characters (Witch is Dead magpie; Meryl Streep in ATMOD) self-sacrifice for the party to win.

So you have this goofy bard character who wears his wedding band six years after his wife’s death, who loses his son, admitting likely 70% of the things he has said are untrue because he is really a DJ but thought his son wouldn’t love him for it, and his reward for keep going is ending up as a distant person in a kid-who-isn’t-even-Nick’s life surrounded by his friends who are happier than him. And in hindsight, the greatest crime he committed was leaving Nick alone sometimes in the house and lying about why he was gone because he refused to make Nick sad about how sad Glenn was too.

4) Glenn is Frank Wilson if the man wasn’t married, Republican, and against weed-smoking. Frank Wilson is held up as the height of fatherhood for not letting Darryl know there were problems in the marriage and they were poor. Yet, Glenn is punished because (gesturing back at ep 1’s intro of Nick and him and then to Glenn not defending himself in the trial arc) he didn’t realize Nick has been finding his weed because Nick lies to him about things, like Glenn was lying to Nick about things. It is a relationship with an easy fix in communication. Glenn and Nick could have had a big emotional conversation if one of them initiated, but neither wanted to make the one important relationship they have with someone else tense unless it was absolutely necessary. It was an easy fix that someone could have explained to Glenn, but no one did.

Anyway, Glenn received a worse punishment than Willy Stampler, which is a ridiculous thing to say and have it be true. Glenn deserved to learn and grow like the other three dads did.

Okay so this au is just a rough idea i had where the teens personalities would switch (normal havings scary personality, she having links etc.). The story beats would be similar, althought slightly changed, their families would stay the same and their backstories would differ slithly. Penny for some thoughts about the clusterfuck that is Solar Opposites s2 (Contains spoilers)

Now that I am no longer drunk out of my mind and watched s2 four more times just to be sure I didn’t miss anything while I was crossfaded. it’s time to talk about it

Ep1 was great. It had more lore for shlorpians with a different perspective and i find it interesting that Korvo didn’t even know there were rich shlorpians. They also lived on floating platforms in the sky, like rich people lived in the clouds and working shlorpians lived on the ground, literally separating the two types of classes

The rich shlorpians said they wanted the pupa so they could get back to being rich, which means they don’t know that they will die, either way, they been jebaited

Did not expect shlorpians to be religious... kinda. but i’m not complaining.

The jokes hit hard and everything was kinda fast. The funniest thing about the season was a wacky plots 

I like how different Terry and Korvo are when dealing with negative emotions 

Terry becomes passive aggressive when dealing with negative emotions. specifically with anger. 

When Korvo basically changes everything about Terry in the Lake House episode, the only thing he doesn’t change is how Terry deals with negative emotions. Imagine not being understood and then becoming a goth because no one understands you, not even your partner, who is essentially the same person as you now. And it’s great.

I love violent goth Terry.

kinda shows how repressed he is to the point of “breaking”

Korvo becomes petty when dealing with negatives emotions too, but instead of anger, it’s sadness or when he’s hurt emotionally

S2ep2 reminds me of s1ep3, they both have something to do with parties and Korvo not being included and because he’s petty af he makes a complicated plan. the plot for the episode was just as mind-fucking as s1.

When Korvo’s sad/hurt, instead of talking about it, he makes a whole ass bill to ban Terry from having to hang out with his human friends because he spends too much time with them and not enough time with him. It isn’t until the shit hits the fan that he finally fesses up, which I find to be perfect. AND it ends with a uwu kiss. 

I find it odd and genius that Terry isn’t how you expect him to be. He looks like he wears his heart on his sleeves, yet he’s the one who shows less emotion than Korvo. Plus he doesn’t know how to express bad emotions and does the whole pretending that everything is fine thing

Could be due to being a laid-back person. By being laid-back, it means not worrying or at least showing it (which btw, if you express emotions, it means you care) 

Maybe someone hurt him enough for him to be passive aggressive OR it could be Shlorp, who the fuck knows

it begs the question, if he represses the bad feelings, what else does he repress?

Korvo LOOKS like he wouldn’t be the type to express emotions, yet he’s the one who is able to show sadness and anger— or a better way to explain, he doesn’t hold back on his emotions. He’s more open of the two adult aliens

AND THEY COME FROM THE SAME PLACE.

Korvo and Terry do things to cancel each other out. It’s cute.

I’d expect this from Korvo, but Terry also makes fun of them too, despite wanting to be liked by them. Dunno, maybe Korvo rubbed off on him.

Okay I don’t have time to watch dndads episode 13 yet so maybe it’ll be answered in the next episode but.... what exactly was Terry Jr’s plan here?

I mean, and spoilers ahead I guess?, but like,

The other dads killed the vampire who may or may not have been Actual Terry Sr, which yeah, traumatizing and all that, but like, kid. There’s only two ways this could have ended once you invited your father(?) in: one, he kills the four dads in front of you and most likely the garden witch as well. This is most likely horrifying to witness, especially since, to Terry Jr, the only person he has any beef with is Ron Stampler. Or two, the more unlikely option let’s be real, the dads kill your dad(?). (Which did end up happening actually) I’m just not seeing how this fight could have ended other than Badly, because this vampire dude is just too strong for the dads to try and restrain or capture or incapacitate in any way, so they can only run or fight- ohhh. Maybe he thought he was going to just scare the other dads away or something. I mean, that was still a pretty big gamble he took but I suppose the ones more at risk were the dads and I suppose Terry Jr didn’t particularly care all that much.

That still leaves the garden witch vulnerable though! Shame on you child, for almost making a witch lose her home!

because like, with every other character in this podcast, they have become more sympathetic as the story has progressed. darryl started as this bossy, macho alpha wannabe, and has become more honest with his feelings and more willing to lean on his friends for support than pretend everything is fine. ron started off as... well, barely a functional human being, and now he has friends, a symbiotic moustache, a real sense of self-worth and the ability to be emotionally open and vulnerable with his stepson. glenn hasn’t really had much in the way of concrete development from the shitty, quasi-neglectful manchild he started as, but the morgan of it all has given him so much depth and made him super sympathetic and it’s clear that development and real change are close at hand for him now that he’s been faced with this awful choice.

and then there’s henry. dear, sweet, shouty, unhygenic henry. the only character who has actually become less sympathetic as the story has progressed. like, okay, i wasn’t here at the very beginning of this podcast, so i don’t know what the fan reactions were early on, but henry was very clearly the most - if not only - likeable character from the word go. yeah, he was cheesy and a tad preachy and way too lax with his parenting style, but he was kind and gentle and considerate. he was the one who, every time something terrible happened and a dad lost their kid, was checking in emotionally with his friends, giving them space and encouragement to process their feelings without fear of judgement. he was the one who gave a pep talk to ron when he was angry and confused after killing terry sr and encouraged him to forgive and empathize with terry jr. i distinctly recall a point in one of the early episodes in which anthony piped up like, “henry is definitely the most functional human being out of all of you.”

oh how far we’ve com from then lmao.  

and don’t get me wrong, henry is still very much all of those things. he’s still kind and compassionate and encouraging and every wonderful thing that makes him who he is as a character... but as the adventure has progressed, more and more of his flaws have stared to show more and more clearly. 

and i don’t just mean the hygeine stuff ( a crime for which i will never forgive will campos lmao), but his bossiness, his hypocrisy, his condescension, and especially, his anger. and i just think that’s fantastic, because it shows that good character development isn’t always a line from low to high, “bad” to “good”. unlike the others, henry has not been emotionally strengthened by this journey, at least not in the obvious way they have. on the contrary, the journey has, more than anything, broken him down. it’s stripped him of his hopelessly optimistic idealism, his control over his circumstances and emotions, it’s forced him to make awful choices and compromise his own strong morals time and time again, and that shit has worn him the fuck down. it’s chipped away at his sunny, sensitive exterior and bared all his worst faults and attributes, not only to his friends in the world of the story, but to the fandom. rather than becoming his best self, like ron for example, henry is kind of on track to becoming his worst self.

but even that is a beautiful fucking thing! because even as the harsh world of the forgotten realms has worn him down, even as his firm stranglehold on his anger has been pried loose, even as he’s lost control of himself and his emotions and blown up with increasing frequency and intensity as the story has moved on... his friends still love him. even when he’s not his sunny self, even when his anger gets the better of him and he becomes the person he’s most afraid of becoming, they’re still there at his side. like, fucking hell, darryl wilson looked him in the eye just moments after a furious, screaming argument and told him that he was the best man he’d ever known, and that? that is just an incredible thing for someone like henry to hear, to know that he is still good and kind and deserving of love, even at his worst. 

and he can use that foundation of unconditional love and acceptance to rebuild himself into someone stronger, someone who accepts his faults instead of running away from them, someone who is able to fearlessly feel and express all of his emotions, even when those emotions are negative and ugly. someone who can be better because they’re no longer desperately running away from who they are at their worst.

and all of this is made even better when you realize that that very same Worst Self that he is afraid of becoming? that impatient, hypocritical man prone to rages and lashing out at and hurting those around him? the monster that henry has seen in himself his whole life and tried to bury under wholesomeness and enthusiasm and unrelenting, quasi-annoying cheer? that monster is barry, and now he’s staring that monster in the face for the first time in years, forced to finally confront him head on for the sake of the children he’s all but ruined in his attempts to protect them, which is the perfect jumping off point for all that amazing growth to really happen and like

y’all it’s just. it’s just so fucking good and i love this character so very very much and all the care that’s been put into his development and i can’t wait to see what comes next for him 

and just... yeah. even though i like to roast henry - because let’s face it, he is very very roastable - i just want to appreciate him for the wonderful character he is, and appreciate will for giving us all this beautiful and complex stankboi in the first place

What son names would Terry like? I feel he’d have several of them? And also like some daughter names :)

Oh, man, John would definitely be there as a name option. In the 80's, it is abundantly clear it would be, as a homage, as gratitude, and as a crown of Terry's and John's lifelong friendship and camaraderie. In present day, it is somehow far more insidious, worrying (and funny?) because Terry would be naming his kid John...after he put the original John in jail on trumped up charges. A kind of a you're named after the greatest man I know situation (because John still is the greatest man Terry knows, even with all this mutual baggage and messiness --- great enough to name his son after), except, Terry feels hideously betrayed by John. Hurt. Heartbroken. Done dirty. So, he'll produce and raise himself a more devoted John, singlehandedly through his own offspring, flesh and bone. A John that doesn't step out of line or bring him ache. Now, John will forever be his, in a sense, because this John is also his child, and his child will only ever love him.

Would probably utilize whatever Ponytail's real name was?

That way, all of his friends are always with him and part of him.

Terrence is always there as an option, of course. Naturally. Terry has a cult of personality, Terry is arrogant, Terry is haughty, so it is undeniable he'd have at least one kid named after himself. Terrence Jr? Terrence Silver the 2nd? There's something undeniably rich about all of these variations of names and he's well aware of that. That much is deliberate. The Valley is saddled with not just one Terry Silver, but two, and he's here establishing a dynastical order through naming practices. Might even make it a tradition. Immortalize himself through his sons and grandsons and great grandsons. Make himself into a living Ouroboros. Might even include whatever his father's name was into that concoction of titles. Doesn't matter what he feels his relationship with his own father was in the first place --- Terry is building himself as an Emperor in small. An Emperor needs elaborate legacy.

I always personally headcanoned that all of Terry's children would have insanely cutesy names. You know how all the OG Cobras have cutesy names? Bobbies and Johnnies and --- well, anyway, I imagine Terry doing something very similar and very much on purpose, where all of his slightly unhinged, very dangerous, very dastardly children all have names like Sammy, Timmy, Tammy, Terry (of course) Ronnie, Morty, Rory, Riley, Gary, Larry, Olly, Kerry and the likes --- a great many of which can be unisex. He definitely would have a daughter called Terrie or Terri. It gets more hilarious the more children he actually has. It think it is a personal joke of Terry's, meant to slightly trick the perception of the world around him. His kids would never be bad or misbehave. One of them is called Timmy, for crying out loud! Never-mind that little Timmy Silver broke someone's arm on the bleachers at his private school. His sons are a matching set of baby snakes with tremendously precious names, but watch out, it is all just a (marketing) ploy.

Possibly any (highly self-indulgent) name actually meaning or alluding to Silver, as in, the precious metal? Arian (Welsh) --- Arianell, for girls, also Welsh or Ariene in Irish. Airgead, in Irish, for boys? Aridai, in Hebrew, that is just...well, yeah, Silver? Going full VIP, upper class eccentricity and naming a son Sterling Silver? Crosses his mind, of course. Gives him a good chuckle.

Now, for girls; oh the girls get the full brunt of his excessiveness, I feel. They, again, sound wealthy, and that is very much a choice in the likes of Casiphia, blatantly meaning silver and money? That one is a bit giddy and on the nose admittedly, so he'd probably scrap that. But, dropping the references, I think a great many of Terry's idea's for girl's names would be very lofty. Downright fanciful. Aurelia? Gold and Silver in one name? A win. Allegra? Especially in reference of classical music? Another win. Octavia, just due to how it sounds as a nod to several Roman Empresses? Helena, after Helen of Troy? Anything and everything associated with Terry's own mother? Cressida? Again, a name meaning gold --- the synchronicity isn't lost on Terry. Olympia? Does get more haughty and victorious than that. Something traditionally fancy with a bit of archaic flare to it, maybe, like Beatrice? Ursula? Dahlia? Vivienne? Delilah? Who doesn't like a clever seductress who overcomes men ten times her size? If we headcanon that Terry has even an ounce of Irish in him, probably something like Ailonora (a version of Eleanor) or just Orla, which again means Golden Princess. Now his daughter can be his silver and his gold. That, or, he can just go full on control freak and flat out name his daughter California like he really owns the place.

Okay so this au is just a rough idea i had where the teens personalities would switch (normal havings scary personality, she having links etc.). The story beats would be similar, althought slightly changed, their families would stay the same and their backstories would differ slithly. Here are some headcanons (Are they headcanons if im the one making the au? Oh well that's what im gonna call the right now) and some schetches i have of their au designs:

Scary is her nick name actually, she got it in soccer because she is kibda scary when playing because she is so good, dislikes that she feels like she has to use it to distinguish herself from Terry Jr tho.

Still dislikes her step-dad, but more because she feels like her and her mom were fine without him and he just ruined their relashonship.

Actually good at soccer (also in a kinda wierdo way like link)

Will call you out on your bullshit

Will also threaten you and mean it

Is one to question authority

A pretty good leader actually (but can be a bit of a perfectionist and take things too seriously)

Still has a notlikeothergirls vibe but more in imoneoftheboys way

Kinda dislikes everyone else on the team at first

Dislikes the wellwellwell soccer kids, she just thinks they are fake and annoying

Doesn't really have friends, so she is pretty lonely

A bit of a soccer nerd

Does write poetry in her spare time, but only shows her mom

Is much more openly loving towards her mom

Is really honest, because of that she comes across as mean

His mom is the best, and he is still very spoiled, he does wonder where his dad is tho...

His mom told him a lot about him, so he just imagines this really cool dude, that had to go away because of something really cool (is slightly dissapointed with the reality of him divorcing his mom, deleting her and his memories and runing away from the fbi, he does find him kinda cool tho, although also scary)

Dresses like an offbrand Supernatural charakter most of the time

Learnt survival because of Grant (it has become a special intrest so he knows a lot)

Knows sign language and morse code

Still kinda sheltered (but he was allowed to do actual camping, he tried to be scout for a while but he disliked it)

As a little kid he went on hikes with his grandpa all the time (and grandaunt Kasey)

Wears a giant backpack with like everything inside (think milo from milo murphys law) with a lot of self defense weapons

Grant taught him a special code to use if he is in danger but cant let others around him know, they also have a text messege version

New to school (i think the li-wilsons just recently moved back in this au) so this is his first time in public school

A weapons nerd (definitly went to a shooting range a lot)

More of a games nerd than a weeb (unlike Taylor), he got it from his dads

Thinks its cool how his name is like Links from zelda games

Likes sports anime and shounen (watched all of my hero academia, he thinks it didn't age that well,but he watched it anyway to bond with his dads)

Honestly happy to get to do some normal teen stuff

Has a lot of online friends, but he still feels kinda lonely

Before they moved he played with norm and taylor as a kid

Thinks pokemon are cool as hell

Used to have this self incert oc "Teenie" that he was really proud of and drew a lot, he wanted to make a whole comic with himbut after he found out his dad isn't proud of him he started to hate it, he thought of it as really childish so he destroyed every drawing he could find (his mom saved a couple somewhere)

Uses a lot of self depricating humor, and just dark humor in general

Tries to seem annoyed at the other teens but genuenly likes them

Realized people thought he was cringy much earlier, it did still hurt a lot

Tries to control his emotions but then just ends up crying due to them being bottled up and he hates it

Goth clothes kinda fuck with his texture issues but he still wears them

Gets along better with hero than in canon

Idk when im gonna have time to actually make something for this au but i really wanted to throw my ideas out there because if i don't then they are probablly never gonna see the light of day.
