TERRIFIER (2016)
Tumblr media
This movie blatantly plagiarized Hannibal Lecter and SAW. The damage tracking makes NO sense, someone will get stabbed directly in their brain or shot point blank in the face but is still alive to endure the next few blows. Multiple people come close enough to actually kill the clown but they never do and then he kills them. Not one iota common sense for any character and if I could unwatch this movie I would. Unoriginal and uninspired.
(Trigger Warning Suicide)
[Originally given 0 stars but changed one star for my tumblr rating system]
Tumblr media
Two girls get stalked by a clown, and I will hand it to them, he is good and creepy. They get taken by him and then the dumb blonde gets sawed in half like the the old torture maneuver but he saws through her bones SO easily it’s stupid. Then the brunette has the opportunity to kill him and fucking doesn't. She is beating the hell out of him with a plank of wood screaming, "get up motherfucker!" instead of just fucking beating him to death when bang(!) he pulls out a gun! He shoots her in the leg, then the stomach, she is still crawling away when he shoots her in the fucking cheek which (point blank from a handgun) gives her a little hole and she is STILL breathing… enough time for him to go, reload, come back and shoot her like 12 more times in the face.
Tumblr media
Usually psychopathic killers with all the costuming and such have rituals to there kills but this guy who is supposedly already an established killer moves from dissecting to axe murder to medieval torture to guns to blunt force trauma to skinning to suffocation to whipping to cannibalism and finally suicide, I mean it's RANDOM. The clown also sustains a lot of damage over the course of the evening but after a moment of rest he seems no worse for wear. Some bullshit goes down with the wacky homeless lady and the brunette girl's sister but the villain doesn't track for me. He doesn't seem the type to use a fucking gun and his motives are super unclear. Is it important that he scares his victims first? What is it about the killings that gets him off? It all just seems like violence but a gun seems a weird choice for him. Also he has mommy issues? Since fucking WHEN.

what's so fascinating about eddie to me is that like almost every problem in his life is a direct result of his own decisions but they're all decisions that don't even seem like decisions to him. like he has this mindset where there are certain things he Must Do or Should Do and then he never really stops to be like but do i Actually have to do this. Why am i actually doing this. who does this benefit and How. and that's a mindset which is like a perfect storm for compulsory heterosexuality. like eddie is a lesbian magnet and he's not a remotely bigoted guy but he struggles So Much with challenging his own entrenched beliefs about like love and masculinity When Applied To Him.
and i think what's hardest for eddie is like. if he accepts that he's gay then he has to reevaluate all of these past choices he made and accept that he basically never once did what He wanted to do and he made most of the big decisions in his life out of a sense of obligation. like the Only thing he ever did for himself was moving out to LA to be a firefighter and even then he sorta went to LA specifically because of shannon. and how the hell do you accept that yknow how do you look yourself in the mirror and say yeah i spent the first thirty years of my life and an entire marriage and my son's entire life just going through the motions of what i thought i was supposed to do and it didn't even WORK it just made literally everybody miserable. i am mourning an idealized marriage that not only never existed but never even Could have existed. did i waste and ruin the painfully short life of a woman i loved? have i been hurting my son by pretending to be something i'm not for his entire life?
like eddie's already king of hating and blaming himself for everything but in a way that's far easier to stomach i think than the can of worms he'll open when he realizes he's gay. and that's why he's continued to repress it for so long.

my thoughts on terrifier 3
i actually live for this shit so i have to write these thoughts down or else they’ll go away
• i have a SERIOUS appreciation for filmmakers who pay homage to the greats before them. this film (and the first two) were so obviously inspired by wes craven and nightmare on elm street. from the final girl vs. slasher dynamic, the film coloring, and the very 80’s synthy soundtrack, it seemed like a culmination of nightmare 1 and especially 2. the shining reference was cute too (i stan a here’s johnny moment in any film)
• this is such a campy film, it refuses to take itself serious. i laughed during every murder scene (not sure if that says more about me than the filmmakers but whatever) because if you’re chainsawing up someone’s ass crack, how am i supposed to take that seriously?
• DAVID HOWARD THORNTON CARRIED. the best thing about art the clown is he doesn’t talk, but DHT does such a phenomenal job through facial expressions and body language, it feels like he’s saying a whole lot. 10/10 comedic timing
• my last thought: it’s about fucking time the horror genre revived the slasher sub. it’s been way too long since we got a true slasher film along the lines of the 80’s greats. something that has a good storyline with continuity, is scary but doesn’t take itself too serious and you live for the death scenes.
my dream is to see freddy and art in a cunt off. idk who would be sassier (but i’m biased so freddy by a landslide) 🖤

why terrifier 1 was actually a good movie
I think I see a lot of people saying the terrifier movie (specifically the first one) was bad but this is why the movie is actually fucking amazing.
the special effects. this is pretty obvious and honestly not many people know this but the first movie had a budget of $35,000 now when you think of all the amazing gore this is insane. I think people forget this little detail that the gore was done with a very low budget
Lets talk about the plot problem. Yes the plot is messy in the first but lets not forget...Its a slasher. slashers have never been well known for their plot. sometimes its fun to watch a horror movie that's just suspenseful and crazy.
This first movie was a start up that never even reached its goal AND it was used to introduce Damien Leones practical effect work and further Develop the character Art the clown.
finally to keep this short I will say there is so many amazing comedic moments. when you think of this you may think of art on the tricycle that was far to small for him but in general art the clown is almost relatable. his reactions to dumb things characters do and his reactions to the world around him are sometimes so human you forget he got stabbed int he head and sort of just got back up...
theres so many other reasons but I feel I write wayyyy to much about this stuff and honestly I should be doing homework right now so... yeah. (and trust me Ill talk about his movie again.and probably review it)
terrifier series for the win!

A Terrified Teacher At Ghoul School
Another anime befitting spooky season with the yokai theme and such, but it’s a lot different than Dandadan’s spooky premise. Ghoul School focuses more on the comedy. However, the pacing feels a little awkward to me. It’s like they meshed a few chapters into one and the clunkiness shows a bit. Why does Satelight keep doing this? They did this with Cherry Magic back in Winter!
Tumblr media
The premise of the story is the MC Haruaki Abe who moves to Hyakki Island to teach at their high school. Haruaki is a sniveling crybaby who is super-sensitive to the point that his first teaching job at a public high school had him resign after thirty minutes. It’s only thanks to the school principal at his new school that he got a new job despite him having a lack of proper teaching experience. However, the biggest twist is that the school he’s teaching at is one specialized for yokai. Given that Haruaki is a big wimp, he does not take this fact well. Another big twist is that the school principal is also a yokai and that he hired Haruaki because Haruaki is descended from a famous onmyoji named Abe no Seimei, which means that he’s special in a way? It makes sense given that he deflected two yokai spells in the first episode alone.
Tumblr media
Because of the school setting, the comedy is mainly centered around poking fun at Haruaki and making him miserable whenever possible from embarrassing him in front of the class to getting chocolate shoved in his face because a student hates humans to getting German suplexed by another student towards the end of the episode. It does get hilarious with how much the author wants the MC to suffer yet at the same time, it gets a little tiresome seeing him so miserable all the time like one episode of misfortunate feels enough, yet we’re going to have to sit through 24 episodes of the same thing. I just hope the comedy gets creative enough. On top of that, the MC is a teacher who has a school uniform fetish, so it does get a little weird when he’s being bribed with a catalog book of school uniforms. The fact that it seems that he likes girls’ uniform more than guys does raises some eyebrows. It would be nice if he liked both genders’ uniforms…
There are so many students, so it’s hard to keep track of who is who, so for now, I’ll just talk about the major characters who appeared and how I feel about them. The principal himself seems like an enigma because he’s the one who hired Haruaki and is a yokai himself. I do wonder what sort of yokai he is. Then, there’s Sano, who is a Yakubyogami. Since he has ‘Gami’ in his name, which means god, does this mean he’s a god of misfortune and not a yokai? Anyways, Sano is usually composed, but does get irritated with Haruaki’s sniveling and whining. He brings misfortune to whomever he touches, so Haruaki gets the brunt of it most of the time. Mamekichi Maizuka is a mamedanuki, which is like a small Tanuki yokai. He’s super adorable! The fact that the yokai encyclopedia says that his kind transforms by putting their scrotum on their heads to transform is a weird fact and that Mamekichi has to protect his dignity by denying all claims makes it hilarious. Then, there’s Hijita who hates humans and was mean to Haruaki. At least he apologized later on, but it was still mean how he took out his anger on Haruaki just because his sister married a human; he’s a Dorotabou, which is some sort of mud/dirt yokai? Last major character introduced is Zashiki, who is a Zashikiwarashi. She’s a shut-in who got addicted to gaming via Hijita. Fortunately, she’s still willing enough to go to school. I do like how Zashikiwarashi brings either good or bad fortune depending on the color of clothes they wear. I do like learning these little yokai trivia while getting to know these characters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The voice cast is a mix of big names, rising stars and new faces. Haruaki is voiced by Ryota Osaka. This is actually the whiniest I’ve heard Osaka as he usually plays cool and suave characters. It’s weird to hear him shrieking and yelling, but it’s a nice change of pace from his usual roles. The principal is voiced by Jun Fukuyama. You know the principal is going to be important if he’s voiced by Fukujun. Then we got Ryota Suzuki who voices Sano. It’s funny how he played Kurosawa in Cherry Magic which was also produced by Satelight. Is he a Satelight staple or something? Mamekichi does sound like he’d be voiced by Ayumu Murase, which he did in the drama CD adaptation of this story, but he’s actually voiced by newcomer Reo Tanie who sounds very similar to Murase. That’s crazy. Hijita is voiced by Taito Ban whom I normally associated with stoic and aloof characters like Shizusumi from Given and Sung Jinwoo from Solo Leveling so for him to voice a hot-tempered siscon is a nice change of pace and it does show that Ban can be diverse in his roles. Zashiki is voiced by Akari Kito who surprised me because I normally associate her with sweet and cute characters so for her to voice the tomboyish and gruff Zashiki is also a nice change of pace. Seriously, the voice actors in this anime are just playing against their typecast and it shows how versatile they can be. I like that!
The animation was good, though. I can tell a lot of time and budget was poured into drawing all the students and their antics alongside Haruaki’s. You’re gonna need a lot of time to properly animate a lot of characters. Though, let me talk about the pacing a bit. It does feel like the anime meshed a few chapters together and made a clusterfuck of an episode. I never read the manga, but it does feel weird that Haruaki just decided to cut class to go find Zashiki to get her to come to school and that Hijita suddenly came back from Hawaii on the exact day he starts the new school semester. It feels as if the Hijita story and the Zashiki stories are supposed to be two separate stories, but got squished into one. Though, I do commend Satelight for making it flow, but the pacing still feels weird…
I honestly can’t wait to see what other misadventures Haruaki will have at Hyakki Academy and how much he’s going to suffer from his students’ antics. I want to know more about the other students too! I hope they get to have screen time! What are your thoughts on the premiere of this episode?

this halloween season im going on a journey of trying to understand art the clown. (talking At Length about the movies terrifier and, to a lesser degree, all hallows eve under the cut. so obligatory Spoilers warning goes here.)
when i first saw terrifier pop up as a title on netflix, i pretty much immediately wrote it off as a generic slasher/scary clown schlock movie, and for a while it seemed like that was the general consensus. i dont think i saw any real buzz about the terrifier movies until the second one came out, and after that it seemed like i blinked and the third one was already in theaters along with tons of art the clown merch and costumes on shelves. i did a little research about the general content of the movies and audience reactions, trying my best not to spoil myself in the process, and decided it was either the sheer grotesque spectacle winning people over in a "how much can you take before you puke" kinda way or there was really something to this series that i just wasnt seeing, and either one seemed like enough to make it worth the watch.
i figured if i was gonna do this i needed to go all in, so i started with all hallows eve, the movie art the clown actually first features in before going on to get his own franchise. theres not terribly much to say about this not-prequel. the art of all hallows eve shares some broad similarities with the final version and establishes a few reoccurring motifs: the use of a tv as a framing device, arts love of shit play and gruesome mutilations as performance. other than that, this version of art comes off as a lot more immediately supernatural in nature. hes sort of operating on a plane somewhere between looney tunes and the ring, apparating out of thin air with a sign cheerfully inviting you to see the circus one moment and hammering his fists on the inside of your tv screen the next. as an introduction to the franchise-to-be i think it sets the stage pretty well, but this is still very clearly a proto-art, not yet the real deal we will come to know.
moving on to the first terrifier movie, the first thing that jumps out is naturally the return of the tv, although this time we start on arts side of the screen in a nondescript location that seems to function as a green room where he readies himself for the next act. the lone survivor of arts apparent offscreen activities being interviewed on screen declares confidently that art is dead, that she personally saw it happen, but fans of classic slashers know that means very little. art could be a ghost, or a demon of some sort, but he could also be more of a michael meyers type boogieman, both human and innately unkillable until proven otherwise, or until his movies no longer brings in the crowds.
and thats something that, especially if youve started with all hallows eve, becomes very apparent right away: terrifier is a movie about movies, taking its inspiration from slashers and gory torture-centric horror of the late 90s and early 00s, which in turn evolved from the classic slashers of 70s and 80s. both the actions of art himself and the surreal horror-trope laden world he inhabits, from the dreamy-eyed woman cradling her porcelain doll child to the mutilated victim turned crazed killer herself, inform us that we are very much watching a movie, that everything we see is not reality nor meant to imitate it, but a shade of hyperreality that exists because we are choosing to watch and engage with it.
which comes back to the character of art himself. a clown, a mime, a performance artist who himself is literally Art. "he thinks its funny because hes laughing" explains the witness, or rather, by dressing and acting like a clown he turns murder into entertainment. you could also say this is what all movie slashers with their respective masks and gimmicks do for the audience. the delivery is what determines the tone is what determines how the performance is received is what determines what the action is. and what it is, is shit and smut and death. and what it is, is art.
currently my interpretation is that terrifier is a movie in conversation with horror movies as a whole. we're currently in a cultural moment where the so-called elevated A24 horror film reigns supreme, and while theres definitely still a place for over the top guts and gore in horror cinema, but theres a lingering stigma that labels this type of film unsophisticated at best and degenerate at worst. terrifier to me is taking the stance that no matter what you personally think of it you have to recognize that even a movie like this is a form of art, and that whether by simple shock value or by its messages or by the merit of the leading mans honestly very impressive silent performance, it has earned its place in popular culture.
at least until i watch the other movies and decide i hate them. we'll see what happens! ttyl!

Terrifier 3 was rated 18+, so why did these parents bring their baby and toddler to see it 🤨😂 lmao like first of all, baby was crying louder than the movie volume, and the toddler would not shut the fuck up????
Like I’m not saying parents need to stay home all the time cause they have kids, but like time and fucking place, if you know your kid can’t be quiet during a movie setting, that’s definitely not a children’s movie, or your baby is too young to not scream and cry 24/7, why did you bring them to a movie theatre? Just cause you don’t care how loud and annoying they are, doesn’t mean everyone else who paid for the movie also doesn’t care

Terrifier 3 (2024) dir. Damien Leone. 7.4/10
I wouldn't recommend this movie to my friends. I wouldn't rewatch this movie.
Honestly, poor Vicky. God, poor Charles Johnson. God, the ptsd of survivors is terrible. Bro, poor Gabbie.
Good gore. Sienna's really so baller. She's like I WILL live.
Damn, I just want to be killed quick. I don't want to be a part of this series. There's no winning, just hurting. Like, I don't even want to be the one who doesn't die first but I also don't want to be hurt like that.
Idk the plot was meh for me this movie.
