this post is for all the jews that have lost friends in the months since 10/7, that have had friends become antisemitic/go mask off with their antisemitism
i see you. i see your pain and grief, and I'm sorry. you deserve better from the people you love.
-sincerely, a very angry goyische ally

look, I'm sorry, the framing of this is ridiculous. there is plenty to say about the difference in military power between hamas & israel, but given that israel has spent billions of dollars building a high tech system to intercept bombs and rockets before they land, "we don't hear about buildings destroyed in israel" is a shitty comparison.
also, a screenshot of one person taking a selfie indoors is a shitty source. find a better way to make your point. otherwise you just look like you want to bash random (presumably) israelis for existing.
This. I have not seen ANY videos/pictures/media showing destroyed buildings in israel like I have seen in Palestine. We have seen Palestine being totally leveled: bombed hospitals, houses, schools, everything. But you know what I have not seen? The same in israel. And do not even try to say "oh khamas controls israels media!!!". How? Because thats makes you sound like an antivaxxer flatearther 💀 so your opinion is automatically worthless and waste of space.
Like people make it sound like what happened on oct 7 was like The Rumbling yet I havent seen anything of that level. Yet you could think that it happened in Palestine because of all the evidence.

some more thoughts about leftist antisemitism from a chinese american person:
whatever happened to "collapsing diverse communities into a monolith is bad, actually"? this seems to be perfectly uncontroversial when people talk about anti-asian racism
and yet certain people are all too happy to label every jew they don't like a "zionist" and act like zionism has one definition (that usually includes genociding palestinians, of course) and like. do you even know that there are different definitions of zionism? have you done the slightest hint of learning about different jewish thoughts about israel besides "israel bad"?
it's just. fascinating. and not in a good way.

so op didn't mention i/p specifically in this post which is why i'm making a separate post, but a lot of people are relating it to i/p, so i figured I'd just say.
the reason jews are asking people to stop comparing the treatment of palestinians to the holocaust is because of this little thing called "holocaust inversion", which is bad, actually! can we maybe not! invoking jews as nazis shows at best a wild disregard for the experiences of jewish people.

Here's the thing that interests me about the dueling scene in Gideon the Ninth. Yeah, the narrative phrasing Harrowhark rose to the occasion like an evening star is peak and the line "Death first to the vultures and scavengers" is pure fire but why is she in that position to begin with?
The situation is thus: Camilla Hect has just won a duel against Marta Dyas attempting to claim the Sixth House's necromancy challenge keys, but she was wounded in so doing. Naberius Tern, backed by Ianthe Tridentarius, is pressing a dueling challenge against the injured Camilla in a flagrant bid to beat Camilla down and take the keys for the Third House while she's already recovering from one match. Gideon is standing by watching things unfold and, to her relief, Harrowhark steps up to put Gideon in the ring as a substitute for the injured Camilla and thus shut down Naberius' vulturing.
Except...why? You'd think that in anything like a polite societal dueling code (I know, I know, but go with it-) Camilla and Palamedes would have the option to demure, saying something like "the Sixth House cavalier just fought a duel and is wounded to boot, piss off for a day and we'll see then." But that's not even floated as an option. Palamedes isn't a dumb guy - far from it - and even if he were out of his element, you'd think someone else could just lean in and say 'dude tell them to shove it.' Judith Deuteros objects by saying "There are rules" and Ianthe shuts that down by pointing out she pressed Marta's duel on incredibly flimsy pretext, so that seems to be an objection on the grounds for presenting the challenge, rather than probing for an option to refuse. If Harrow and Gideon (or Jeannemary, jumping on the bandwagon) hadn't interceded, Camilla was about to fight her second duel back to back.
(Even in the first dueling challenge, the tone of onlookers seems to be that people want Palamedes to default and hand over his key to the Second House to spare Camilla the fight, because they assume the Sixth House is weak and don't know how good Camilla is.)
To sum up: the Sixth House seems to have no recourse but to either accept the repeated dueling challenges or default; with no way to decline except to give the Third House something they want (in this case, a Canaan House key).
That's insane.
And if that's deliberate, rather than an oversight on Tamsyn Muir's part, that suggests so much about the Nine Houses' dueling culture. It suggests that a challenge from a cavalier primary can't be refused; you have to either throw down or roll over as if they won. It speaks to a distinct lack of value placed on human lives, that the cavaliers are forced to accept a challenge on pain of their house losing face at best, something material at worst. The defending house can only negotiate to a degree that the attacking house is willing to let them. This is, depressingly, fully in keeping with the series' characters' treatment of the cavaliers. The subsequent books and short stories (especially The Unwanted Guest) really hammer this idea in, that the cavaliers are nominally viewed as a source of blades and shields in the hands of the necromancers, even if the laypeople of the setting don't know all the reasons behind the traditions.
In real life, formal dueling typically had customs and rules for negotiation and ceremony, with multiple exit points for parties to back out of a potential threat to life without losing face. Only truly aggrieved parties would press a suit to the point of confrontation. The Nine Houses say screw that, put up or shut up. They've more or less raised up the informal tradition of 'swords now motherfucker.'
To steal a phrase from another tumblrite, 'congrats god that's the worst anyone's ever done it.'

on one hand, can't believe i had to read the words "Jews don't define antisemitism" with my own two eyes. on the other, not surprised at all.
anyway if you respond to multiple jewish people telling you the same thing with such a dismissive statement, i think you don't actually care about antisemitism, you just say you do because saying otherwise makes you look bad.
#tern talks#antisemitism#leftist antisemitism#yes I'm vaguing#thinking about that one ask someone got that's like it's not antisemitic to not like jews#that's what this feels like

Coronabeth & Naberius Tern Puppet: Me!
Ianthe: My good friend Sav!
💀 Time to smack some of my Naberius puppet photos on here! The "Babspack" was very light and quite functional, despite it being as big as it was. It's probably my best puppet work thus far!

things that are true: Anat Schwartz has shown bias against Palestinians, and that is bad. The NYT article was probably used to justify needless death in Gaza, which is also bad.
things that are ALSO TRUE: calling rape a hoax is extremely fucked up. Can we maybe not! We have so, so much evidence that people were raped on 10/7, claiming otherwise is actively denying reality.
The New York Times, however, does have rules and norms. Schwartz had no prior reporting experience. Her reporting partner Gettleman explained the basics to her, Schwartz said in a podcast interview on January 3, produced by Israel’s Channel 12 and conducted in Hebrew.
Gettleman, she said, was concerned they “get at least two sources for every detail we put into the article, cross-check information. Do we have forensic evidence? Do we have visual evidence? Apart from telling our reader ‘this happened,’ what can we say? Can we tell what happened to whom?”
Schwartz said she was initially reluctant to take the assignment because she did not want to look at visual images of potential assaults and because she lacked the expertise to conduct such an investigation.
This is stunning.
The fear among Times staffers who have been critical of the paper’s Gaza coverage is that Schwartz will become a scapegoat for what is a much deeper failure. She may harbor animosity toward Palestinians, lack the experience with investigative journalism, and feel conflicting pressures between being a supporter of Israel’s war effort and a Times reporter, but Schwartz did not commission herself and her nephew to report one of the most consequential stories of the war. Senior leadership at the New York Times did.
Schwartz said as much in an interview with Israeli Army Radio on December 31. “The New York Times said, ‘Let’s do an investigation into sexual violence’ — it was more a case of them having to convince me,” she said. Her host cut her off: “It was a proposal of The New York Times, the entire thing?”
“Unequivocally. Unequivocally. Obviously. Of course,” she said. “The paper stood behind us 200 percent and gave us the time, the investment, the resources to go in-depth with this investigation as much as needed.”
The whole piece is quite long, please go read it yourself, it's quite definitive.

thoughts on babs?
nothingburger. ok well im sure he was an interesting guy so to give it my best shot: i do like how he serves the distinct narrative purpose to Die. all perceptions of him are primarily framed by gideon "lesbian" nav and the tridentarii, of which ianthe steps forward and quickly summarizes him as a perfect cavalier, someone quite boring, and too trusting for his own good (and i saw another post mentioning how it was then particularly ironic that he died via being stabbed in the back). he doesnt have much personality to read into, but i think thats the intent. he was there to serve and to die, but MORE importantly he lives on through ianthe, who has recently come to face the nightmare that she is amalgamating with him. something something, post mortem you are defined by how other people carry you and how this is so hindering to someone (ianthe) who refuses to acknowledge the impact hes made on her, souls meshing whether you like it or not. if you write him in fics he better be the bus driver

fun fact: i recently went in for a sleep consultation and that description up there? is basically what i told him. and he raised his eyebrows and told me (multiple times, no less!) that i should not be feeling this way.
we don't know if it's a sleep issue or if there's something else going on, bc i haven't had my actual sleep study yet, but... yeah.
if you regularly feel so tired that you want to cry/feel physically ill, if you're regularly so tired that you're avoiding activities you want to do, that's not just ~life under capitalism~
The 40 hour work week isn't good for anyone. We know this, both on a gut level and from empirical research.
However
There are people, the majority of people in fact, who go through their 40 hour jobs and then come home, make dinner, and do something with their evening that is enjoyable and not just a dead-eyed zone out. They spend time with family or friends, play with pets or kids, engage in hobbies, or even just sit and enjoy media actively.
When they talk about how much it sucks to go to work, it's a kind of general grumbling (because again, nobody likes the current system).
If you approach going to work and feel like you might just die if you have to go in again. If you come home after work and can't do anything except stare blankly at the TV or your phone. If you can barely make dinner or keep your house clean. If you feel like you're actually drowning all the time and have no ability to actively engage in any enriching activities outside of work.
That's not just the general shittiness of the system. That's a sign that you have a mental or physical health issue that's being compounded by the system. It's a sign of disability.
The medical system where you are may suck donkey balls, but there's a lot you can do just by tracking your symptoms and trying to figure out what's going on. And if you can get medical help, you can vastly improve the quality of your life, even if you can't get out of the system.
#tern talks#i have a list now#of things that made him go hmm no you shouldn't be that tired#i can post it if anyone is interested
