2 October: Comet
“to light up the sky if only for a moment”
“Captain Tanaka.”
--
“Open hailing frequencies.”
“Jaeger is limited to audio capabilities, Captain. Opening channel now.”
“Science vessel Jaeger, this is USS Phoenix, en route to escort you to Deep Space Nine.”
“Jaeger, this is Phoenix, please acknowledge.”
“Lieutenant, what’s their status?”
“Jaeger seems to be functioning normally, Captain. Shields are up, primary power engaged and functioning, engines online and idling. They seem to be…ignoring us.”
“USS Jaeger, this is Captain Ami Tanaka of the USS Phoenix. Please respond, or we will be forced to consider you in violation of Starfleet procedure and in need of either rescue or subduing. Do we have visual?”
“Yes, Captain.”
“On screen.”
“Time to intercept?
“Two minutes, ten seconds.”
--
“Captain Ami Tanaka.”
--
“Captain! Ship dropping out of warp! Cardassian warship, Galor-class!”
“Shields up!”
Boom.
“Direct hit! Aft shields at sixty-two percent… Captain, they’re…hailing us.”
“…On screen.”
“Captain. This is Gul Taret of the Marindar. You are currently in violation of Cardassian territory. I must ask you to leave.”
“The hell we are; we’re not even in the Demilitarized Zone. You just fired on us in Federation territory, Gul.”
“I’m afraid this sector is in the process of changing hands. The Federation will be ceding Terok Nor back to the Cardassian Union and the Dominion.”
“We’re supposed to escort this ship to Deep Space Nine.”
“Captain, the station is properly called Terok Nor.”
“Captain, the Jaeger is coming about!”
“Gul, it will be a cold day in hell before I call Deep Space Nine anything but that. Close channel.”
“Channel closed.”
“Ready phasers and photon torpedoes. Is the Jaeger doing the same?”
“Yes, Captain.”
“Mom, what are you doing?”
“Then get my daughter out of here and let’s get to work.”
--
“Captain Ami Renata Tanaka.”
--
“Abandon ship. This is your captain speaking. All hands, abandon ship.”
“I’m not going without my family!”
“Terese, you heard your mother. Your father and sisters are probably getting into a shuttle as we speak. Your mother gave me orders to protect you and get you off the ship, now get on that shuttle.”
“Well, I’m ordering you to stand down and let me wait for my mother!”
“You’ll make a great captain someday too, Terese.”
The hiss of the door closing and sealing.
“This is runabout St. Croix, departing the Phoenix. Destination set for Starbase 375. Doors sealed, preparing for launch. Terese Tanaka is on board.”
“Good to hear, St. Croix. I wish you luck.”
“Mom!”
“T, you’re gonna have to be brave. I misjudged, but I don’t want you to pay for it. I never wanted you to pay for my mistakes. I love you, T. All runabouts, launch.”
--
“Captain Ami Tanaka, killed in action, stardate 50975.3, over Bajor.”
“Final roll call complete. Crew of the starship Phoenix is officially disbanded and dismissed.”
The explosion as the Phoenix and the Jaeger rammed the Marindar had been plastered on Terese’s eyelids for days. We were a distraction. All three ships had gone out in a blaze of light that lasted only a few seconds in the vacuum of space. My mother died for a distraction.
The Phoenix was destroyed. The Federation was at war. And Terese had made her decision.
“T?” Her father’s hand on her shoulder. “You’ve been quiet.”
Terese looked up and told him matter-of-factly, “I’m going to apply to Starfleet Academy.”

I think I’ve decided on what’s going to be my next ‘silly little neighbours fic’ I have my sfbb, which will be posted in april (with ART!! The artist who selected my fic is actually familiar with neighbours and actually watched the elle/carmella era scream!!!!) and the first draft is nearly finished I think, only a handful of scenes left to write before i start editing :’)
I have already started the fic I want to put out after that, it’s sitting pretty at 3k for the first scene. it has a lot more plot that RVMS ever had, and has a very different structure focusing on locations for chapters rather than characters. The basic plot is mapped out in my brain, it’s set very earlier this year, post accident. Leo goes missing after giving Abigail to David and Aaron. Glen and Harlow team up to find him, most of their extended family believes that he has left of his own accord. Harlow thinks he has been murdered/kindapped/shanghi’d and Glen thinks he crashed his car and is in a ditch somewhere. Harlow calls Elle, who is sort of playing the part of a dime store detective in this fic to help them search and figure it out. It kind of becomes Elle, Harlow, Glen, and Nic vs. Terese, David, Aaron, Jane, Chloe with Paul being caught in the middle.
Ultimately, the fic is focused on Leo’s relationships from an outside perspective, and on peoples preconceived notions of him. Elle is not a very kind protagonist she’s petty and spiteful -- Especially toward Jane and David. At first, she is ambivalent toward Aaron, but realizes quickly that he is the source of much of the doubt over Leo’s vanishing being purposeful rather than an accident.  In the second half of the fic as she gets more desperate, she turns on Paul too believing him to once again be prioritising his relationship over his children.
The relationship I’m most excited is that of Elle and Nic. They don’t strictly ‘get along’, but they do have the shared goal of finding Leo and they both cared deeply for Britney. Nic thinks that the way Elle politely demolished David over Harlow’s mental health was funny and she liked that Elle would do that -- she would like to talk to him like that herself sometimes but doesn’t want to risk rocking the custody boat and she agrees that Leo probably didn’t just walk away from not just Abi but also his share of Britney’s ashes. She is Elle’s ‘man on the inside’ of the Daaron unit.
I guess the rest is not strictly set in stone, but the story ends when Rob accidentally cracks the case Jean from TDBM style, they find Leo and Elle decides to do something cruel but funny to amuse herself after finding out that Leo trusts her more than David. Melanie has a prediction about Leo that turned out to be correct. I’m thinking of naming it Robinson vs. Tanaka.

My own little retrospective. Part one
Best characters
This’ll be in no particular order. Many who aren’t featured are either ones I don’t remember or I wasn’t watching when they were in the show. But be warned. I’m a Pierce Greyson fan and a Nicolette Stone hater.
Daniel Robinson. He was Kylie Minogue’s son played by Sean Herman from ouat. What did you expect?
Paul Robinson. He should’ve been more unscrupulous. It’s what he deserved
Pierce Greyson. He’s Chloe’s should’ve been.
Madison Robinson. Her and her parents should’ve been in the finale together
Curtis Perkins. He was fun
Jesse Porter. They should’ve kept him around longer
Sam Young. Two months was not enough
Kyle Canning. Character development was unmatched
Kiri Durante. It’s a travesty that she ended up with Nicolette
Toadie Rebecchi. He more than deserved his ending with Melanie
Sonya Rebecchi. I will always hate how they killed her off
Callum Rebecchi. Just like Kyle. His character development was unmatched
Harlow Robinson. Especially during her compassion fatigue arc
Leo Tanaka. He was like Paul but with better hair
Amy Williams. Mostly because she looked like Natalie Portman.
Lauren Turner. So much better than Terese
Brad Willis. It’s just a shame that some of his kids were complete jerks.
Lou Carpenter. He was funny. Especially his rivalry with Sheila
Harold Bishop. How can you hate Harold?
Kate Ramsey. Her death was a great episode
Mark Brennan. He should’ve been ballistic a lot more than he was.
Aaron Brennan. One of the few lgbt characters they didn’t completely mishandle.
Tyler Brennan. I liked his original hair
Chloe Brennan. He should’ve gotten back with Pierce at the end
Mackenzie Hargreaves. Again. One of the few lgbt characters they didn’t mishandle
Chris Pappas. He deserved a boyfriend in the finale
David Tanaka. If only he weren’t so harsh to Paul
Jimmy Williams. One of the few who never expected more than Paul was capable of
Lucas Fitzgerald. I don’t remember much but I do remember him being a bit of a badass sometimes
Ben Kirk. Before Xanthe got to him at least.
Susan Kennedy. Mother hen par excellence
Karl Kennedy. His “music career” notwithstanding.
Melanie Pearson. She what Toadie needed in the end
Shaun Watkins. Deserved better than the family he had
Finn Kelly. Don’t worry. He’ll also be in the next list.
Levi Canning. I’ll never forgive Zara for what she tried to accuse him of.
Sheila Canning. Her overprotectiveness notwithstanding
Yashvi Rebecchi. Badass.
Ned Willis. When he moved on from Lauren of course.
Steph Scully. The way she punk’d Paul after he gaslit her was a stroke of genius.
Donna Freeman. She was one of Paul’s unofficial children.
Bridget Napier. The way she did was sad
Declan Napier. He should’ve stuck around longer
Rebecca Napier. She is the one who pushed Paul after all.
Oliver Barnes. Iirc correctly he was a good guy
Ringo Brown. The way he died was also sad.
Gary Canning. His death was right out of the hunger games.
Sky Mangel. She should’ve stayed instead of Nicolette Stone.
Sophie Ramsey. Everyone needs a good rebellious arc
Zeke Kinski. He was so kind with the way he turned down Sophie
Rhys Lawson. He was a prick. But he was funny
Summer Hoyland. Again. I don’t remember much. But the 2010’s version was good.
Madge Bishop. Her appearance in the 30th was amazing.
Bailey Turner. The was he was targeted by Gemma Reeves was horrifying.
Mason Turner. Mostly because his actor was on the h2o spin-off.
Amy Greenwood. I loved how she pissed off Dipi
Jack Callahan. One of only two main priests on the show and he was definitely the most interesting.
Paige Smith. Amazing secret baby plot. Twice.
Jane Harris. Away from her black hole of a daughter that is.
Byron Stone. Nothing will ever beat the scene where he told his mother he was a hooker for older women
Lyn Scully. The cat fight she had with Rebecca was hilarious.
Robert Robinson. Great villain. But like Finn he’ll also on the next list
Clive Gibbons. Not just a gorilla gram anymore.
Nate Kinski. I remember him being kind a lot of the time.
Amber Turner. Apart from the Robbo plot line of course
Georgia Brooks. Most of the extended Rebecchi family were great and she was no exception.
Angie Rebecchi. Battle axe supreme
Stingray Timmins. His death scene was amazing
Dylan Timmins. He had his moments but he was alright.
Mike Young. Only saw him in two episodes but I liked him
Piper Willis. Although her sleeping with Angus was a severe lapse in judgement
Jay Rebecchi. He was a good kid. An idiot. But a good kid
Shane Rebecchi. I’ll never forgive Dipi for what she did to him
Dee Bliss. It’s not her fault her biological mother and sister were criminally insane
Willow Sommers. Toadie should’ve formally adopted her
Nell Rebecchi. She’s gone through a lot in her short life
Hugo Rebecchi. Again. It’s not his fault that the woman that gave birth to him was criminally insane
Libby Kennedy. If it weren’t for the surrogacy storyline.
Kirsha Rebecchi. She was a good kid
Roxy Willis. Apart from the nudism that is.
Andrew Robinson. It’s safe to say that most of the Robinson’s will end up here
Jim Robinson. I loved his two returns to call his son out
Jade Mitchell. Good addition to the Rebecchi family
Dane Canning. Decent temporary substitute for Kyle
Des Clarke. He was a bit clueless but he was alright
Hilary Robinson. One of the only people who can worry Paul
Beverly Robinson. One of the few characters without an agenda
Lucy Robinson. Apart from the whole Glen thing I mean
Elly Conway. I didn’t like her ending but she didn’t get on with Imogen which is a plus in my book
Bea Nilsson. She could’ve been nicer to Levi though.
Faye Brennan. It’s not her fault her husband was a monster.
Andrew Rodwell. He was far more grounded than his wife was.
Shane Ramsey. He was alright. He should’ve asked Paul about the shadiness though
Malcolm Kennedy. Like father like son. Terrible taste in blondes
Gabe Smith. He was adorable with all that hair
Elle Robinson. She tried to help look for Zeke.
Doug Willis. I liked him better than Josh.
Matt Turner. I like Brad and Lauren together. But it’s shame he had to die for it to happen.
Scott Robinson. He did shockingly little in the finale.
Charlene Robinson. She should’ve sung the theme song at the end.

Neighbours star reveals all on David Tanaka’s fight for his life: ‘The accident is BRUTAL, viewers will be shocked!’
Next week’s Neighbours sees a huge stunt hit our screens as beloved character David Tanaka is caught up in a terrifying road accident that leaves him on death’s door.
We caught up with the lovely Takaya Honda, who plays doctor David, to find out all the behind-the-scenes gossip from the Neighbours set.
Neighbours fans will be on the edge of their seats next week as David goes out for a late-night bike ride after a fight with husband Aaron, only to get hit by a speeding car.
Terese Willis is first on the scene after the accident, and David is in a bad way. Injured and unconscious, it is a race against time to get him to hospital before it’s too late.
But when it is revealed that David has lost one of his kidneys it is a race to find him a donor, but as actor Takaya tells us, that’s not as easy as it sounds… “David needs a kidney transplant, but no one around him is a match which apparently is quite common.
“There are three tests that you have to have done, I couldn’t tell you what they are through, because I’m not a real doctor! It is a big waiting game and there are a lot of hurdles that need to be jumped over.”
But while everyone is frantically trying to find David a new kidney, he is flatlining in his hospital bed… “This storyline was a lot of fun to play as an actor – someone being hit by a car and then having to deal with their own possible death is really interesting as it is not one that we usually have direct experience with.”
But according to Takaya there is an upside of your character left fighting for their life in a hospital bed… “I loved it as I wasn’t the one having to say the tricky medical words! But the bad thing for David is because he has his medical knowledge, he almost knows too much.
“Most people might be oblivious to how seriously ill they are, but he knows that his hopes are being shattered and needs to try and not lose his fight.”
akaya also admitted that the crash scenes are so hard to watch that he hasn’t actually seen them himself yet… “I want to watch it at the same time as viewers and see it as they see it.
“Filming was really interesting… it was CGI and digital stuff, which often means you have to film it all in sections, but the small bits I have seen are brutal. The audience will be shocked, I was surprised I didn’t have any broken bones from it!
“It’s a brutal hit and it will be interesting to see how the audience react. There will be plenty of GIFs made of it! Lots gets watered down in Neighbours because of the time we are on, but this is a real measure of what the audience was willing to watch. It’s not very Neighbours!
Whether or not David’s loved ones manage to find him a kidney remains to be seen, but things don’t look good for the character in the lead up to Christmas. And Takaya has admitted that he would miss his character should he ever get written out… “It’s hard not to love David,” he jokes.
“But I will admit that he infuriates me with how easily he forgives people. It doesn’t take long before he is the one apologising to them… he is just so nice!”

Neighbours spoilers: Will David Tanaka be killed off as star teases ‘possible death’?
NEIGHBOURS favourite David Tanaka is going to be embroiled in a tragic storyline in upcoming episodes as he becomes a victim of a horrific cycling accident. However, will the incident lead to his untimely death?
David (played by Takaya Honda) has been a pinnacle of the Neighbours community since he arrived on the Channel 5 soap back in 2016 alongside twin brother Leo Tanaka (Tim Kano). As the long-lost sons of Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis), the pair have featured in many climatic plots. With his character set to endure tragedy in upcoming episodes, soap star Takaya, 32, has hinted death could be on the horizon for the doctor.
The drama begins following the creation of a cycle group David is a part of with his husband Aaron Brennan (Matt Wilson), Karl Kennedy (Alan Fletcher) and Pierce Grayson (Tim Robards).
After an argument with his beloved, the doctor believes the best way to clear his head would be to go for a bike ride in the dead of night.
Unfortunately, the Ramsay Street resident becomes the victim of a car accident when Kyle Canning (Chris Milligan) falls asleep at the wheel.
With fans set to see his character fighting for his life in light of the tragedy, Takaya has teased “death” could be on the cards.
In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, the actor explained some of the ramifications of his character’s ordeal as he described the tragedy as an “extension” of Leo’s departure from Erinsborough.
“There will be quite a few times we’re really not sure whether David is going to make it or not.
“Which goes into exploring really interesting stuff for me as an actor.
“To play the character going through the ups and downs of having hope and then having that hope taken away from you and having to deal with the concept of contemplating your own mortality and possible death.”
However, could the idea of death come to fruition if the beloved character is killed off in such tragic circumstances?
Whatever happens, the backlash on Kyle is likely to be huge following his already troubled relationship with Paul and the fact he is dating David’s sister, Amy Williams (Zoe Crammond).
Could the doctor’s death lead the lovers to split as the Erinsborough heart throb is sent down for killing Aaron’s husband?
Takaya also opened up on what it was like to film the crash scenes and teased what viewers can expect to see.
“It’s a pretty brutal scene so I’m really interested to see how the audience reacts. I think they’ll be quite shocked by it.”
With the soap venturing into the darker realms of late and featuring gritter storylines, the soap actor also gave his take on the new direction.
“Audiences are craving it in a way,” he began.
“They want to see how the psychology of these situations play out, rather than just seeing the situation itself play out.”
Takaya continued: “As actors, we love that, we love getting a chance to really dive into a character in a situation and not have to move on really quickly from it.
“I think it’s a really great step forward for the show.”
Viewers will have to stay tuned to see how David’s latest plot unfolds, but will his time on Ramsay Street come to an end?
How will Aaron react if the love of his life is cruelly snatched away from him in the lead up to Christmas?

Neighbours star Takaya Honda reveals life-or-death Christmas plot for David Tanaka
Will he survive?
Neighbours star Takaya Honda has revealed that David Tanaka will be among the characters taking centre stage at Christmas this year.
Viewers will see David's future remain uncertain over the coming weeks, as he's told that he needs a kidney transplant in the aftermath of his hit and run incident.
After being knocked over while riding his bike one evening, David is rushed to hospital and one of his kidneys is removed as part of the efforts to save him.
David is later told that his remaining kidney is failing, which means that a donor needs to be found as soon as possible.
Confirming that this plot will run all the way until Christmas, Takaya told Inside Soap: "The whole family's Christmas wish this year is that David survives.
"His condition is serious, and his loved ones spend a long time not knowing whether he'll make it or not. It's a big rollercoaster of emotions – but David is trying to remain positive."
Asked about the possibility of a long-lost relative being a match for David, Takaya replied: "I reckon that he'll take what he can get right now! David is very open-minded and forgiving, and willing to give people second chances.
"So if someone is willing to provide him with a kidney, that's a sign that there must be something good in them."
Meanwhile, Takaya already has a suggestion on what could be ahead for David and his husband Aaron in 2020 if he makes it through his ordeal.
He said: "A baby storyline of some kind is what the audience is begging for – and we as actors are really keen for that too. There are so many different avenues to explore, like surrogacy or fostering – or maybe someone could just leave a baby on the doorstep for them!"

Note
what were the magellan crew like as kids
Terese was outgoing, curious, and determined to become a Starfleet officer like her mom Captain Ami Tanaka. Her mom was her idol, and that didn’t change when Ami lost her life in one of the first battles of the Dominion War.
Baki was a shy kid, especially after her mother also died in the Dominion War as part of the Bajoran Militia. She clung to her older brother Tann for the most part.
Benny was a wild child. Being half-human, a quarter Romulan, and a quarter Vulcan, as well as being raised on starships, meant that she didn’t have much of anywhere to call home and very few long-lasting friendships. Her father died when she was four, and her half-Vulcan mother sometimes struggled to raise a child with a marked resistance to Vulcan emotional training.
Though childhood is defined differently for long-lived species like the El-Aurians, Likar was also something of a rebel, though on El-Auria, that wasn’t saying much. They were encouraged to explore their interests and, eventually, the worlds beyond El-Auria, and they took both opportunities eagerly.
Sindar was quiet before he was joined with Kee. He knew by the time he hit his mid-teens that he was trans, but he wasn’t sure how his family or his people would take that. He kept his head down, worked hard to qualify for joining, and, in his free time, learned as much as he could about engineering.
Shiraya was a fighter, through and through. Swordfights with sticks--and eventually with swords. She was tapped for the Imperial Guard at an early age, but she hated the militaristic bent of the Guard and opted for Starfleet instead of her Guard commission, shocking everyone.
Tyler was raised by a single Starfleet-officer father. He was a quiet kid too, content to observe. He’d been taught from an early age not to bother the crew when they were on duty, so he went to the ships’ computers with his questions.

1, 5 and 7 for whoever you like!
i’mma do this for the enterprise-f triumvirate, so captain terese tanaka, commander krya baki, and lieutenant commander benilde “benny” arisawa
1: List five basic facts about your OC.
Terese:
Half-Japanese on her mother’s side, half-Swedish on her father’s.
The second generation of Starfleet captains in her family; her mother Ame Tanaka was captain of the USS Phoenix, which was destroyed just after the beginning of the Dominion War.
At 51 years old when she takes the captain’s chair of the Enterprise-F, she is the oldest of the senior staff (at least of those with normal lifespans. looking at you, sindar and likar).
Her background outside of command includes studies in culinary arts, theatre, and music.
She loves berries, and she often complains that the replicator doesn’t make them right.
Baki:
She was born just a few months after the end of the Cardassian occupation of her homeworld Bajor. Her father was already dead, killed by a Cardassian soldier who didn’t like being taken out of his position of power over the Bajorans.
She was mostly raised by her brother Tann, ten years older than her, after their mother died in one of the last battles of the Dominion War.
At 29 years old when she’s promoted to Commander, she is one of the youngest first officers in Starfleet.
Bisexual as hell and married to both T’Nazzn Griffin, half-Klingon civilian bartender, and Lexanis “Lexie” Sentta, nonbinary Betazoid civilian counselor.
A martial artist in her free time. Naz has taught her to use Klingon weapons, but she still struggles with shielding her thoughts from Lexie when they spar so he can’t read her next move with telepathy.
Benny:
Half-human, quarter-Vulcan, quarter-Romulan. Her mother T’Kon was born to a Vulcan man and a human woman from Canada, and her father Tora Arisawa was born to a Japanese man and a Romulan woman.
Also second-generation Starfleet; both of her parents were officers. T’Kon is currently an admiral, and Tora died in an attack on the ship where he was a lieutenant and vice-chief engineer.
Can fucking shred on an electric guitar, thanks to a Teenage Rebellion phase that stuck with her.
Can speak five languages: English, Rihannsu (Romulan), Vulcan, French, Japanese. Can curse in several more.
Operations chief of the Enterprise in addition to duties as second officer, but her original Academy study was in transporter technology and artificial intelligence, which makes her a prime choice for the first Starfleet flagship to have its own artificial intelligence system.
5: Describe your OC’s physical appearance.
Terese is five foot four, but carries herself like she’s six inches taller. She still cuts a pretty impressive figure in her uniform; she has to, to be a captain. Her sharp dark eyes are complemented by a slightly asymmetrical bob of sleek black hair. Despite the severity of her on-duty look, she actually has a quick smile and an easy laugh.
Baki is taller than her captain. At five feet, nine inches, she has the signature Bajoran ridges on her nose bridge, straight-backed posture, dark eyes, and brown pixie-cut hair. She’s the object of the fantasies of a lot of wlw crewmembers, for an idea of her general Look.
Benny’s mixed heritage gives her an almost-alien look: slanted eyes and eyebrows over a long, stright nose in a heart-shaped face, framed by pointed ears and long, dark hair. She offsets it with a punkish look that she can still pull off in her mid-thirties: multiple ear piercings, hair pulled into a ponytail on the side of her head, and a flashy smirk.
7: Describe your OC’s fashion sense.
Terese on-duty is clean-cut, her uniform neat and well-fitted. Off-duty, however, she prefers bright colors and soft fabrics, often skirts and sweaters in blues and turquoises. She loves a good drapey skirt and shirt combo, often paired with a scarf. Comfortable, bright, breezy fashion.
Baki prefers a slightly military look even off-duty: pants tucked into boots, neat and nice-looking. But she does have a soft spot for off-the-shoulder tops and chunky jewelry.
Benny’s off-duty fashion is surprisingly feminine, for those who see it for the first time. She likes skirts and pink, and she loves wearing her butterfly hair ornament. But sometimes, even when she’s supposed to be off-duty, she looks like she’s on duty, wearing mechanic’s gloves, drop-crotch work pants, and boots. Sometimes it’s because she’s actually working on something. Sometimes it’s because she’s giving a noisy rock concert in a soundproof holodeck.

10 October: Blueshift
“spectrum shift: moving closer”
“I supposed I expected you to be more…”
“Vulcan?”
“Yes.”
“Tactful, Captain.”
“You can shove it, Commander.” Terese sipped at her synthwine, unperturbed as ever.
Benny grinned back at her. “You know I’m only a quarter Vulcan, right?”
Terese raised an eyebrow as she lowered her glass. “Oh?”
“I know, I know, pointy ears and slanted eyebrows. They’re dominant traits anyway. But only one of my grandparents was Vulcan. Mom’s mom. Dad’s mom, on the other hand, was Romulan.”
“Really?” Terese asked.
“Really really. And I grew up on starships. Didn’t have time to go to a Vulcan academy. Don’t know if they would have accepted me anyway. Things are still tense after Romulus…well. You know.”
“Ah. After its star went supernova.”
“I was twenty-two. Just graduated the Academy,” Benny said. “Hru’nanov—Grandmother—was still alive on a colony world somewhere in Romulan space. But Mom was the one who called me. Told me what had happened—the initial reports, anyway. She sounded more upset about Ambassador Spock going missing than Romulus. I called Hru’nanov. I was dreading having to tell her, but…she already knew. She said she’d known from the minute it happened, from a sudden hole in her heart. Well, not exactly that; she was speaking Rihannsu. But that’s the English equivalent.”
“You speak Rihannsu?”
“And Vulcan. Triple the heritage, triple the language lessons as a kid.”
“I don’t know if I’ve ever heard Rihannsu spoken,” Terese mused aloud.
“Turn off your translator for a moment, then.” Benny leaned across the bar. “T’Nazzn! Kaeha bontwe vr’qiuu’n!”
T’Nazzn shrugged his lack of comprehension, but Benny shook her head, waving off the sentence and laughing.
“What did you tell him?” Terese asked.
“That you’ll pay for our drinks.” Benny smiled again as she picked up her bottle and raised it in a salute. “Thanks for that, Captain.”
“In your dreams, Commander.” But Terese was smiling too.

11 October: Chaos
“a distinctive area of broken ground”
“The Ancient Greeks thought Chaos came first,” Tanaka mused. “From Chaos was born Earth, and from Earth the cosmos and the sea and every other facet of the universe.”
“How incredibly human-centric of them,” Krya answered dryly.
“The Ancient Greeks had no idea Bajor or Vulcan or any other planet existed, not even the ones in their own system.”
“But aren’t the Terran planets named after Greek gods?”
“Roman gods,” Tanaka corrected. “And their names came much, much later, when astronomers first realized that the stars that didn’t move with the others weren’t stars at all. And then five hundred years after that…we finally discovered that we weren’t alone.”
“I never expected this level of sentiment from you, Captain,” Krya said.
“Only when it comes to astronomy and my sisters,” Tanaka acquiesced with a smile. “But what do you think, Commander? Do you think Chaos came first?”
Krya considered the question, holding her captain’s calm gaze. “No,” she said finally. “It came last.”
“How do you figure?”
“The cosmos came first; we know that much. Then Earth and other planets, and then some of those planets made life. And some of that life developed sentience.”
“Krya, with that logic, everything came last if sentient beings developed the concept.”
“No, Captain, sentient life didn’t just create the concept. It created chaos itself.” Krya took Tanaka’s raised eyebrows as an invitation to continue. “Think about it. The universe moves in order. Gravity dictates the places of stars, galaxies, planets, moons. Non-sentient life lives by instinct, driven to procreation and little else. But sentient beings? Beings that can think, are self-aware, have consciousness? It opens up so many more possibilities. Each decision contributes to development. No matter how small. No matter how much order we try to bring, no one can predict exactly how a situation will turn out when sentient beings are involved. Chaos came last. Captain.”
Tanaka was truly smiling now. “I never expected this level of eloquence from you, Commander.”
Krya ducked her head, smiling at the praise. “If I may go?”
“Return to your post, Commander Krya,” Tanaka agreed. “And, off the record: I think I’m going to enjoy working with you, Baki.”

Never have I ever... written a poem? :D
Sindar puts down a finger. “Blame Korian.”
T’Nazzn tries not to draw attention to himself as he, too, puts down a finger, but Baki explains for him, “It was when we were first dating. Klingon courting ritual. I did the yelling and throwing things, though it was more a comment on the quality of the poem than a reciprocation.” T’Nazzn’s face is scarlet.
Terese also puts a finger down. “I practiced haiku with my grandfather when I was young.”
And Halla puts down her last finger. “Does it count if it was a really rude limerick about my stepmother?”
Bonus embarrassing fact about Halla: “My sneeze is really quiet and squeaky, but I’m apparently incapable of burping quietly. Probably ingrained habit.”
(Halla is out!)

16 October: Perihelion
“you will never be closer to light”
“To the Enterprise, and to one year of going where no one has gone before. May she have many more.”
“The Enterprise!”
Terese smiled as her crew raised their glasses and chorused her words back to her. “And to her wonderful crew. May she carry us to many more distant stars.” She turned her smile around the room, taking in each face, each person she’d come to know over the last year: Baki with her husbands, Tyler with his arm around Sindar’s shoulders, Benny and Shiraya on either side of them. Even Likar couldn’t quite keep up their irritated demeanor. “Enjoy yourselves, my friends. We’ve earned it.”
The observation lounge erupted in cheers as the crew toasted one another and drank.
“And to our captain,” Baki called over the din, “without whom we would be lost!”
“Captain Tanaka!” came the loudest collective cry yet as Terese bowed a little in acknowledgment.
The party broke up into conversation as Terese watched, sipping her champagne, a well of warm pride spilling in her chest.
“Eat, drink, and be merry. For tomorrow…we will fly.”
Terese smiled without looking. “Now that’s a new take on Shakespeare.”
“I’m not human; I have a ready-made excuse.”
Terese smiled down at Tann in his hover chair and at the two admirals with him. “I’m glad you three could make it out for the anniversary. Baki and Benny seem happier with you here.”
“As they should be,” K’Ralta answered. “How has Krya been getting on as first officer?”
“Admirably,” Terese said honestly. “I was worried at first, her working with Tyler, but I believe they’ve resolved their differences.” As if on cue, Baki gave Tyler a friendly punch in the shoulder as they both laughed.
“Mister Sloan seems to have shaped up well too,” T’Kon commented. “I had my doubts, but K’Ralta thought he owed Sloan after his father passed.”
“You’re lucky, then, Admiral,” Terese replied. “Your gamble paid off. Tyler has become one of my most reliable officers. I think I may put in for him to be promoted to full lieutenant. Along with Mister Ereen; she may be the most capable helm officer I’ve ever worked with. And Commander Arisawa has been a wonderful second officer, don’t worry, Admiral.”
“I had no doubts,” T’Kon answered serenely, smiling as her daughter slung an arm around Shiraya’s shoulders.
“It is truly remarkable how well this crew has come together in one short year. I believe Likar has unofficially adopted half my bridge officers.”
“More than half,” Likar said dryly from T’Kon’s other side. “Who else is gonna look after them? Sindar and Shiraya can’t go a week without one or the other or both injuring themselves. Where would they be without me?” Likar’s face softened, a rare thing. “And where would I be without them?”
“And where would each of us be?” Terese echoed. “Where would we be without the Enterprise?”

15 October: Meridian
“where does your compass point?”
“You know, being a captain should mean you can delegate your duties to other people so you have time to call your sister more often.”
“Unfortunately, it means something more along the lines of I’m the only one with the authority to do some of those duties.”
“Which is why Starfleet takes so long to get so few things done.”
“Don’t insult my people, Madeline.”
“Call home more often, Reese,” Madeline Tanaka retorted.
Terese sighed. “I miss you too. How’s Corinne?”
“Cory’s got a new boyfriend, as she always does. I keep telling her to try dating women instead, but to each her own.”
“Mmh. Is this one any different than the others?”
“He’s interested in old Earth planes rather than misconceptions about space travel, at least.”
“So he might not break up with her because she knows more about his favorite thing than he does.”
“Might not, yeah. She has two degrees in physics, and he has one in history, so maybe they’ll make a good team. Or at least it might last longer than it usually does.”
“And you, Mad? How are you and yours?”
“Henny’s running Josie and me ragged. She’s a nine-year-old genius and she knows it and is constantly a little shit about it.”
“How’s Josie?”
“Oh, you know.” Madeline waved a mock-dismissive hand. “Working on her fourth degree; I swear she’s never gonna stop going to university unless we put her on a starship. And maybe not even then.”
“You wouldn’t let her step foot on a starship, Mad.”
“One family member in deep space is bad enough. I nearly stopped you entering Starfleet, remember?”
“All too well…”
The sisters fell into a moment of silence. The destruction of the Phoenix was a hard thing to forget.
“Anyway, you’re living up to the legacy just fine on your own, Miss Captain of the Enterprise. You ever gonna get married, or are you gonna be in a relationship with your ship forever?”
“It’s a new ship,” Terese fired back. “Who knows if I’ll like her enough to make it serious?”
“It’s the Enterprise,” Mad said flatly. “No one is gonna pass up a ship with a legacy like that.”
“So that’s two legacies I have to live up to now?”
“No pressure, Reese.” Mad sighed and fixed her younger sister with a look. “Visit when you can, stay safe out there, and I’ll be happy. Okay?”
“I’ll do my best,” Terese promised. “My love to everyone there. I’ll send something for Henny’s birthday.”
“I love you too, Reese. Stay alive.”
End subspace transmission.
