one thing i'm really appreciating about tempest breaker so far is the narrative calling avar out a bit. don't get me wrong, i support women's rights and their wrongs, and one of my favorite things about avar is that deep down she's a mess. when we first meet her, she organizes this incredible feat between all the jedi at hetzal, she's labeled a hero because of it, but she had doubts and a bit of a dark side too. but there are times when the narrative calls out other characters for their mistakes, but nothing is ever said about avar for doing similar things (prime example: elzar's actions on starlight killing chancey vs avar almost killing lourna, and only failing to do so because she had keeve there to stop her).

avar is arguably the most hot-headed of the firebrands, and i think it was demonstrated really well in part 4 of tempest breaker. when she sees keeve for the first time upon her return to the temple, she immediately lashes out. to the point where even elzar is like 'hey, maybe take a step back.' and later avar tells keeve that elzar fully told her she was being hypocritical, and i don't think the narrative has done that so directly with avar yet, and it was kind of refreshing for her to get knocked down a peg. and i especially liked when she meets back up with lourna and keeve, and lourna asks what changed her mind, and avar basically says "i took a breath." avar told us in TotF that stellan was the head, elzar was the heart, and she was the hands of their trio. and i love how that line demonstrates that!! avar just charged right in after keeve's return, not thinking and not considering keeve's feelings right away. but when she had a minute to think about it, she came back more levelheaded. and it was just a really nice detail.

i just think avar is infinitely more interesting if they let her be a hero, a leader among the jedi, AND acknowledge her mistakes and let her own up to them. she can be really cool and formidable AND be a mess at the same time! and i like when the story lets her be both, instead of acting like she's perfect and has done nothing wrong.

(now i've only read through all the high republic material once, so i could be missing another time where avar gets reprimanded by the other characters/the narrative. i know it kind of came up in the comics, and she was questioning her own actions in EoD, but this, i think, is the most direct conversation we've had about it)
