Fandom Ask

1 - What originally drew me to it

Back when I was a teenager they played reruns of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon series on Teletoon Retro and that's the piece of GB media I was most familiar with. I think I did watch the movies on TV at some point, but not all the way through. I was mainly hooked on the cartoon then.

GB was not my main interest in my younger years however, as my heart belonged to Alice in Wonderland (especially American Mcgee's games). After a while I depressed and wanted to move away from the tale of a girl who was lost and alone in favor of something more friendly. Queue the announcement of Ghostbusters: Afterlife and me rediscovering my love for nerds chasing ghosts together :)

6 - A character I'd like to frame and hang on my wall and admire like a work of art

Well, it's not in a frame, but I am very fond of my Peoplebusters art poster designed by RichiCrypt.

These are some of my favorite villains from the cartoon for the concept alone. I'm a sucker for evil dopplegangers in fiction. Their designs kick ass and I love Richi's take. His inclusion of a demonic Flip Winston is great too since he was missing from the original episode that introduced them.

17 - The line of dialogue I quote most often

This franchise has some great quotes. "He slimed me" "Get her, Ray" and "It's true, this man has no dick" still slay me every time. Although I admit I don't actually quote anything specific that often? My friends tell me I sound a lot like Egon so I've tried to say a few things in his voice for a laugh in VC. Other than that, I was saying a few of Peter's lines on Halloween like "Back off man, I'm a scientist" as a warning to the ghosts in the haunted house (Ironic, since I was cosplaying Phoebe).

20 - Fics/fanart I'd love to see

Right after watching Afterlife I was 100% convinced we were getting a cartoon spinoff to bridge the gap between that and the next movie. This... Does not appear to be happening, much to my profound disappointment. All I really want is to see Pheebs and the gang going on adventures around their haunted town. If anyone out there wants to write more of that in fanfic, I'd be very grateful.

I'd also love to see more art and stories focused on the villains delving into their origins and motivations. This franchise has so many cool ghosts and creatures too offer, I can't get enough!

So, @i-masunka actually told me about a sighting of weight gain in an episode of a French show I never heard of. But apparently, it is a really popular one.

It’s called Copy Cut, and it’s a cartoon (well, a “dessin-animé”) about cosplay. Basically, a group of teenagers drive around with their grandmother in a van and they go to all sorts of cosplay conventions, contests and other pop culture events parodying actual fictional works. This show was created by Canal+ around 2009-2010, and is still being aired today on Teletoon+ (the last times the episodes were aired was apparently February on this year).

However, despite this success, I found barely anything about this show... It is not disponible online (through streaming or official buying), there is not even a Wikipedia article about it, nothing. The two things I could find where :

So yes... this French show that is still airing after nine years, has 53 episodes and was dubbed in English seems completely absent from the Internet, outside of the free stuff that were officially posted five years ago. 

But, there is a weight gain sighting in there. A Youtube user posted a video of a weight gain instance in one of the episodes. I searched and found out that the episode is episode 50, called “Sumo Story”. I’ll make a series of posts about it. Unfortunately, my only source is this video, and this video is someone filming a screen so... it’s not the best quality. Also, since it’s in French, English speakers won’t understand what is happening, but happily I do :P

Sailor Moon in 90s Australia

Since the news about Saban Moon broke again with the new documentary about it (here’s a post about it with youtube link: https://www.tumblr.com/blog/view/luna-whiskers/693308308231159808?source=share) I got interested in my own ‘lost’ Sailor Moon experience.

I lived in Australia until I was nine, and the first tv show (not just anime) which I ever watched was Sailor Moon. I vaguely remembered that it was part of a long tv segment which included actors who would sometimes cosplay as Sailor Moon characters, and wanted to find some more information about it. It is not as obscure as Saban Moon, fortunately, and I did! For anyone else who is interested in the Aussie history of Sailor Moon, here’s what I’ve found so far.

Moon Kitty has a page about Sailor Moon in Australia, though their air date of 1994 is not accurate; the DiC dub of season 1 was only recorded in 1995:

There’s no date beyond ‘96 listed, but the Sailor Moon episode which airs is episode 18 by the DiC dub count: ‘Worth a Princess’s Ransom’. This episode first aired September 22, 1995 in the US during Sailor Moon’s first run, according to Wikipedia. I’ve never been able to find a definitive date for when Sailor Moon first started airing in Australia, but based on this it must have either been early ‘96 or late ‘95. As the screencap before shows, it’s not possible for Moon Kitty’s date of ‘94 to be possible, since DiC only dubbed season 1 in ‘95.

This Agro’s episode features an entire Sailor Moon episode, as said, starting at 31:06. Another neat tidbit can be found a few times in this segment, an ad for Sailor Moon dolls! One repeat of the ad is at 22:10. I actually had some of these dolls as a kid!

These are from a ‘Sailor Moon Week’ they did in ‘97, but I do recall that this was not the only time the cast cosplayed as Sailor Moon characters.

I can’t say for sure when I first started watching Sailor Moon, but now I know that it could have been as early as when I was five (my age during ‘96). It’s pretty incredible to get confirmation of just how long I’ve been into Sailor Moon; pretty much my whole life!

Actually, in the middle of writing this my parents called and I asked my mum about it, and got a bit more dating done. My school had a Halloween party in year 1, 1996 (I did not remember which year it was, only that it happened) and I was desperate to dress up as Sailor Moon for it. My poor mum drove all over Melbourne trying to find a costume for me and finally managed it (thanks and sorry, Mum!). So by that point I had already been obsessed with Sailor Moon for ages, ergo I did in fact start watching Sailor Moon at the age of 5 (I also still have my year 1 Japanese schoolbooks from back then, yes, my school taught Japanese back in the 90s). Incredible!

Sailor Moon ran pretty consistently in Oz all the way up until we moved to Canada in 2000, as far as I recall. I’ve heard that it had a much more bumpy road in the US, though? I never saw it airing in Canada (though I only watched Teletoon and YTV, so if it wasn’t on them I would have missed it), and when we moved to the US I never saw it airing at all.

At a very young age, he was rejected. Even that his mother dumped him in a dumpster the first moments he was born. It was an old woman who heard his cries and decided to take him  has her own son. She always wished to have a son and called him after her late husband : Charles Bédard. However, the old woman called the child protection services not long after because she felt like she was having an heart attack.  After the child protection took him , she died has he was taken away. He can barely remember her since he was barely a few couple months old when this happened. He was taken into an orphanage and was waiting to get picked. Unfortunately for him, he waited a whole 15 years with no success. He was teased for being a ginger while he was there. But at the same time, he became quite familiar with computers and even started hacking. When he was 13,  he’d always sit in front of the TV to watch Naruto on Teletoon. There was something about this character that made him more confident about himself and inspired him to become stronger even without  feeling  love at a young age as well. Eventually, he discovered the wonderful world of anime and became addicted to it. At the age of 15, he stole money from some rich entrepreneur and bought himself an apartment and got himself a high performing laptop. He didn’t feel like working so he just stole whatever he sees fit from his apartment in Chinatown. Eventually, he was got after he had stolen half a million from Umbrella Corporation at the age of 19 from the backtracking Ada Wong did on him. He was offered a job has the lead hacker of the U.S.S. He is the type to be very laid back , nearly lazy and fun to be with. However, he is very good at hiding his emotions.
