anti-electricity cartoon, “The Unrestrained Demon” (1889). author unknown. It is likely that the man in the wires is John Feeks, a linesman who touched a high voltage line.

“Telephone linemen in New England's Connecticut River Valley festoon one of the millions of poles erected during the last three decades of the century. In 1876 there were only 3,000 telephones in the entire nation; by 1900 there were 1.4 million.”

“The Lineman” by Norman Rockwell (1948)
American Telephone and Telegraph Company, (AT&T) advertisement, 1948.
Although Rockwell's illustration would promote the image of AT&T, its effect was meant to be inspirational rather than commercial. In a letter to Rockwell from the ad agency, it was suggested to Rockwell that he portray the lineman on a telephone pole in the act of restoring service after a storm. "The work of the linemen for the Telephone Company," said the account representative, "is filled with opportunities for personal sacrifices and acts which stem only from devotion to national welfare, so that it seems a fitting work to honor by such a painting."

People were getting killed.
In 1897, "The Dangerous Trades Committee of the government’s Factory Department reported that there had been 14 fatal electrocutions over the past five years at electricity generators" (source)
"This new electrical power work proved to be much more dangerous than telegraph or telephone work because of the risk of electrocution. Between the 1890s and the 1930s, line work was considered one of the most dangerous professions in existence. Approximately 1 in 3 linemen were killed on the job, mostly from electrocution." (source)
"During the late 19th century, there was little safety regulation or standardisation in this emerging industry. Electricity lines were often not adequately strung up above the ground, and they would frequently fall, leading to numerous electrocutions from those who they struck or those had tried to remove them, unaware of the dangers of doing so. Not to mention stories like the grotesque deaths of linesmen like John Feeks that the cartoon allegedly depicted." (source)
John Feeks, a lineman in 1889, was killed instantly when he accidentally touched a live high-voltage line. His body dangled in the wires for 45 minutes before it could be retrieved. (source)
It wasn't irrational to be afraid of electricity when you didn't understand it, didn't know how to operate safely around it, and people were getting killed by it.

“DAMAGE CAUSED TO POWER LINES,” Montreal Star. August 13, 1931. Page 38. ---- From Yesterday's Late Editions ---- Shown above are some of the power transmission poles found damaged this morning, the photo inset at the left, showing one of the steel frames an Ile Jesus after being dynamited at the base. The large picture shows one of the towers carrying power lines from Shawinigan Falls after it had been unbolted at its base. The property is owned by the Montreal Light, Heat and Power Company, and it is alleged by the company that the damage was caused by some of their former linemen now on strike, or by sympathizers. //// “STRIKERS DENY SABOTAGE CHARGE,” Montreal Star. August 13, 1931. Page 38. ---- Three of Four Main Leads Put Out of Commission Yesterday ---- (From Yesterday's Late Editions) Sabotage, involving little material damage but endangering the whole electrical supply of Montreal, was committed this morning about 3 o'clock, when a tower carrying the power lines from Shawinigan Falls was unseated from its bed by dynamite and three poles carrying power from the Cedar Rapids plant were also dynamited. The result was that three of the four Shawinigan lines went out of commission and the damage done endangered the whole of the electrical supply from that source. Montreal was thus nearly completely deprived at water and power for a few hours.
The work on the tower was done an angle near St. Francois de Sales on Ile Jesus. Removing the two bolts from each of the outer uprights of the tower, those who did the damage, officials assert, expected that the weight of the wires would pull the top over to the other tower which carries the parallel wires. This it failed to do, apparently, and the men then placed under one of the standards, and thus unseated the outer base of the tower which fell to to its neighbor and an put out of commission the two wires on the one lower and one of the two on the other.
An explosion was heard about 3 o’clock this morning by neighboring farmer, who looked out of his window and saw the flash of the wires, but as he thought “it was just something wrong with the wires.” When he saw the leaning tower later this morning he telephoned the Montreal Light Heat and Power.
The Light, Heat, and Power Corporation attribute the damage to work done by some of their former linesmen who are now on strike because the company refuses to recognize their union. Officials of the union involved disclaim any knowledge of acts of sabotage on the part of their members and deny that they are responsible.
DAMAGE IN WEST END. Vandals were also busy in the western suburbs last night. A steel standard at Summaries hearing four high-tension circuits was partly destroyed by a blast that shattered half the bane of the standard, broke three of the lines, made a crater five feet in diameter and nearly three feet deep, and left the standard leaning precariously.
Elevators at City Hall Out of Order Four elevators at the City Hall could not be run this morning, due, it is understood, to power shortage. Officials in the civic buildings are apt to blame the lack of sufficient "white coal” to those who have recently, been deliberately wrecking poles and lines of the Montreal Light Heat and Power Company.
In order to cope with a power shortage which is estimated to have cut the normal service in half, lights were cut down to a minimum.
Strike Statement The following statement was issued this afternoon of the striking members of the Union of Linesmen and Helpers have been blamed for sabotage and damage to the Company's property, the men have organised 20 crews who are now patroling the city night and day in an effort to protect the Company's property and the public, so that there interference with the street lights, As we realize that if these are out Montreal would be at mercy of anyone who wished to the take advantage of such a situation to violate the law and embarrass not only the citizens but the large number of tourists who are at present visiting this city.
We are using every effort to co-operate with the police in their endeavor to track down those who are either in the employ of the company or other outside bodies and unknown to the men and endeavoring to destroy the men's cause. Every crew has definite instructions to inform the authorities of any suspects they come in contact with."

#it is so very weird how binary this has gotten#both of my grandfathers could cook and iron a shirt do the washing etc#both my grandmothers could do many agricultural and home repair tasks#my mother was one of the first wave of women telephone linemen and my father was a good cook#why would you want to defer big chunks of basic human competence to a binary gender system?
All of this! My grandmother drove a delivery route for a dairy, and my grandfather hemmed his own pants. How did we get here?
I just got exposed to the TikTok "pink task/blue task" thing and like... are y'all ok? My grandparents didn't even have a gender binary this regressive.
Do a lot of Gen Z women want to be stupid? Because I assure you, you are capable of using a screwdriver.

How to Guide Messenger Bag Properly?
They want little to no debut. They are available nearly everywhere in a metropolitan setting today. So far as style choices are involved, they are among those first hipster staples. Messenger bags for guys  are a safe bet, in regards to picking an accessory that is both functional and cool. They are available in assorted sizes, but are usually big enough to accommodate a man's most often used possessions--out of his can of spray paint into his course novels, to his most recent production MacBook Air and Beats with Dre cans. However, where would they come out of historically? What dimensions and substances do they come ? And, because most men are more prone to inquire --how are they best worn? Now's article attempts to answer those questions, so only keep reading to discover.
Tumblr media
History of the Messenger Bag
Messenger bags go by a handful of other titles, such as carryalls, and courier bags. As you've probably guessed by now, they were initially used for carrying letters and other postal dispatches, even as early on as ancient times.  Amongst others, bike couriers and Pony Express employees were the first to carry messenger bags. And nowadays in the united kingdom, some couriers of this Royal Mail use over sized messenger bags instead of routine Postbags.
The first modern messenger bag was really the bag worn by utility linemen from the 1950s. It was made from the De Martini Global Canvas Company and its purpose was to accommodate each of the tools that linemen required when going up utility poles to fix them. The first messenger bag was made of cotton wool and lined with waterproof fabric. The shoulder strap was also made from cotton and webbed, the bag closed with two straps plus it also had a pocket to the inside for invoices. These bags weren't sold in shops, but issued to and from different messenger firms located in New York.
Globe Canvas has been the primary bag supplier for many such companies in New York throughout the 70s and 80s. Back then, messengers obtained the bags out of their companies and you could tell who worked for that just by the colour of the luggage.  And therefore, with these simple additions, the trend craze for messenger bags begun. It's worth noting that before these bags specifically created for bicycle riders emerged, vogue brands fabricated comparable products modeled after map case luggage used by the military. They have been in use for more than a hundred years now.

Messenger Bags for Pros & Cons
Pros
Like most guys using a white collar occupation today, you probably ought to take your notebook from point A to point B, every now and then. Perhaps you work at home on many days, but have the occasional business meeting Caribbean. Perhaps you freelancer and want to bring your notebook to a media or brainstorming session.  Whichever the case may be, the messenger bag is the more economical choice, regarding both functionality and style. To put it simply, it is larger than a fanny pack (adorable, but not appropriate for larger objects ), and nearly as large as most backpacks. However, unlike a back pack, a messenger bag will probably appear pretty like a professional notebook bag. Bonus: additionally, it will allow you to keep from looking like a dorky collegiate child.
You require a pencil to quickly write down something. Your telephone is ringing off the hook, either in some nook or cranny of your own backpack. Meanwhile, you are fumbling to your items such as mad, arms behind your back as though you were giving yourself some bizarre type of reversed hug. Forget that type of distress and put on a messenger bag rather. With all their internal pockets and pockets, then it will become a breeze to get rapid access to a product that you want right now (rather than five minutes after, when you have finally was able to unload the back off your spine ).
Cons
Biking around town at the hot season can be enjoyable --it can be a horrible hassle.  , but in addition, it has to do with the best way to are armed. Any man who rides a bicycle on the routine, and sometimes needs to transport around milder stuff, like a notebook, a novel or two, or assignments for college will inform you backpacks are a last resort. They'll make your spine sweat like mad and are usually only acceptable for longer excursions, which require you to take a load. Messenger bags may be comfy for shorter excursions, when you want to make a few stops and are not carrying much.
Building on the above mentioned point, even in the event that you don't bicycle, you are likely to discover that messenger bags tend to be somewhat more unwieldy than backpacks sometimes.  If you are commuting in moist weather, for example, and your luggage does not include a shoulder strap which has a fantastic grip, the tote will keep slipping off.  In the same way, should you have to take a heavier load, then your shoulder will go sore using a messenger bag--which might not be the situation with a back pack.

step 2 understand that a sexual or aesthetic preference for non-8pack body types does not constitute body positivity or fat liberation. step 3 understand that exchanging the henry cavill standard of sexiest man alive for a different extremely specific archetype of muscular masculinity, one popular among your online social circle instead of among straight normies you don’t associate with, does not make you detached from the social dogma or sexually broad-minded. step 4
“Right-wing politics can, for example, emerge quite easily from a sentimentalizing of the armed forces or of blue-collar workers, a sentimentalizing which can itself prolong and sublimate a marked sexual preference for sailors and telephone linemen.”

State police returning to Portland following deadly shooting (AP) Oregon State Police will return to Portland to help local authorities after the fatal shooting of a man following clashes between President Donald Trump supporters and counter-protesters that led to an argument between the president and the city’s mayor over who was to blame for the violence. Trump and other speakers at last week’s Republican National Convention evoked a violent, dystopian future if Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden wins in November and pointed to Portland as a cautionary tale for what would be in store for Americans.
Snapped Poles, Shredded Roofs: A Long Road to Recovery After Laura (NYT) Hurricane Laura ravaged southwestern Louisiana, leaving weary residents to assess the toll and map a way forward. The damage the storm inflicted was so severe that it will be an immense undertaking just to clear debris. But beyond the physical labor, residents were also stepping into the thicket of bureaucracy that follows a hurricane, with insurance claims and applications for government aid. Officials said that roughly 368,000 customers in the state remained without electricity. Some 17,000 linemen were at work on repairs, but they had a lot to tackle: some 500 transmission towers were destroyed or damaged. In some places, utility companies said, it could be at least four weeks before electricity is restored. CoreLogic, an analytics firm in Irvine, Calif., estimated that the hurricane had caused insured losses of $8 billion to $12 billion. “The story here is going to be the wind damage,” said Curtis McDonald, a meteorologist with the firm.
Burning (NYT) According to researchers, somewhere between 4.4 million and 11.8 million acres in modern-day California burned every year in the earlier times. When people started moving there, and building there, and understandably preferring that their homes not burn, those natural fires were stopped. From 1982 to 1998, land managers in California burned on average 30,000 acres per year, which dropped to 13,000 acres from 1999 to 2017. The backlog is deadly, and one reason the state has become a powder-keg. A February 2020 study published in Nature Sustainability found California would need to burn 20 million acres to become stable.
A Zoom Thanksgiving? (AP) As the Summer of COVID draws to a close, many experts fear an even bleaker fall and suggest that American families should start planning for Thanksgiving by Zoom. Because of the many uncertainties, public health scientists say it’s easier to forecast the weather on Thanksgiving Day than to predict how the U.S. coronavirus crisis will play out this autumn. But school reopenings, holiday travel and more indoor activity because of colder weather could all separately increase transmission of the virus and combine in ways that could multiply the threat, they say. Here’s one way it could go: As more schools open for in-person instruction and more college students return to campuses, small clusters of cases could widen into outbreaks in late September. Public fatigue over mask rules and other restrictions could stymie efforts to slow these infections. A few weeks later, widening outbreaks could start to strain hospitals. If a bad flu season peaks in October, as happened in 2009, the pressure on the health care system could result in higher daily death tolls from the coronavirus.
Rethinking their slogan (Foreign Policy) The latest casualty of the coronavirus pandemic is the long-time slogan of popular U.S. fast food company Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). The slogan, “it’s finger lickin’ good,” has been used by the company on-and-off for 64 years, but KFC announced last week that it is suspending the slogan because it is no longer appropriate in the current health-conscious environment. Health experts discourage people from touching their faces in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, and users on social media criticized KFC for implicitly promoting unhealthy habits in its marketing campaigns. The company rolled out an advertisement in the United Kingdom and Ireland that ended with the tagline: “That thing we always say? Ignore it. For now.”
India’s economy contracts by nearly 24 percent amid pandemic (Washington Post) India’s economic output shrank by nearly 24 percent in the most recent quarter, the worst contraction since records began and the largest such drop of any major economy during the coronavirus pandemic. The stunning decline reflects the economic toll of India’s nationwide lockdown and illustrates the depth of the challenge now facing Indian policymakers as they grapple both with a hobbled economy and a raging pandemic. India is currently adding the largest number of new coronavirus cases per day of any country in the world. The Indian economy has not contracted for two consecutive quarters—the definition of a recession—in 40 years. Now the country appears certain to experience a recession and possibly one of unprecedented severity. That kind of economic slump would be devastating in a country like India, where 9 out of 10 workers have no job protections or unemployment insurance, leaving them with almost no safety net.
Indian army says foils Chinese attempt to encroach over disputed border (Reuters) Indian troops foiled an attempt by Chinese troops to encroach over the disputed and ill-defined border in the western Himalayas, the Indian army said on Monday, in a fresh flare-up between the two nuclear-armed countries. Pre-emptive action by the Indian troops was enough to deter the Chinese troops, and the confrontation did not escalate into a clash between the two sides, an Indian military official, who requested anonymity, told Reuters. China rejected any breach of the border by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops, but tensions between the two armies in the freezing snow deserts of the Ladakh region have been running high for several months.
Backing the monarchy in Thailand (Foreign Policy) Protesters gathered in a stadium in the Thai capital of Bangkok on Sunday to rally in support of the monarchy following massive student-led anti-government demonstrations in recent weeks. The event, which attracted around 1,200 people, was organized by the newly-formed pro-monarchy group Loyal Thai. “We insist that the country’s conflicts stem from politicians,” said Warong Dechgitvigrom, a prominent right-wing politician who founded the group. “The monarchy institution has no part in governing the country. The institution is the morale support that connects the people together.” Anti-government protesters have defied draconian laws against criticizing the monarchy in recent weeks to take to the streets to demand the ouster of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, fresh elections, and a new constitution that would limit the powers of the monarchy.
Facial recognition and bathtime bookings: How China’s universities are reopening (Reuters) As COVID-19 cases in China sink to new lows, the world’s largest population of university students is heading back to campus in a migration defined by lockdowns, patriotic education and cutting-edge surveillance equipment. The highly choreographed return comes as Chinese universities revert to in-person instruction for the fall semester after months of pandemic controls. Some universities have strict rules governing how students eat, bathe and travel. Students in Beijing, Nanjing and Shanghai told Reuters that they must submit detailed movement reports and stay on campus. At the same time, government procurement documents show dozens of universities have purchased “epidemic control” surveillance systems based on facial recognition, contact tracing and temperature checks. There are more than 20 million university students in China, and most live on campus in shared dorm rooms, presenting a challenge for health authorities. On Chinese social media, students have chafed at the controls, which mirror restrictions on the wider population during the height of the outbreak in March.
With a Wary Eye on China, Taiwan Moves to Revamp Its Military (NYT) China’s growing aggression across Asia in recent months has created fears that it may make brash moves in Taiwan, the South China Sea or elsewhere. The ruling Communist Party’s recent crackdown on dissent and activism in Hong Kong, a former British colony that has long been a bastion of democratic values, has added to those concerns. Beijing’s posturing has forced Taiwan, an island of 24 million, to re-examine with new urgency whether it is prepared for a confrontation, the possibility of which now seems less remote. But there are questions about its readiness to defend its people—with or without the help of the United States. “I have to be honest: Taiwan’s military needs to improve a lot,” Wang Ting-yu, a member of Parliament’s foreign affairs and defense committee, said in a telephone interview. Taiwan’s leaders have been moving to shake up the military and increase spending. Military tensions across the Taiwan Strait have surged in recent months as Taiwan has increasingly become a focal point in the confrontation between China and the United States.
New prime minister in Lebanon (Foreign Policy) Mustapha Adib, Lebanon’s current ambassador to Germany, is set to become the country’s next prime minister as it continues to grapple with one of its worst crises since the end of the civil war in 1990. Adib won support from all of the major parties on Sunday, as well as from former prime ministers including Saad al-Hariri. He will be designated prime minister today just before a crucial visit from French President Emmanuel Macron.
Israeli, U.S. officials on historic flight to UAE to formalize normalization deal (Reuters) Top aides to U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a historic first flight from Tel Aviv to the United Arab Emirates on Monday to finalize a pact marking open relations between the Gulf power and Israel. Even before discussions start in Abu Dhabi, the delegates made aviation history when the Israeli commercial airliner flew over Saudi territory on the direct flight from Tel Aviv to the UAE capital. Announced on Aug. 13, the normalization deal is the first such accommodation between an Arab country and Israel in more than 20 years and was catalyzed largely by shared fears of Iran.

Taking Care of Our Electrical Issues
Tumblr media
Basically, the Covington electrician is just like any other electrician in the world. On the whole, an electrician is one tradesman with the unique job of mapping out, installing, managing, and doing troubleshooting electrical wiring systems.
These systems exist in our homes, in industrial buildings, in factories and in machines and large pieces of equipment. Electricians are responsible in the installation and the maintenance of the wiring and the control equipment.
Electricians can work with high voltage wiring. They can also install and maintain voice, data and video wiring. In accordance to their level of skills and knowledge, some Covington electrician are able to fix engines, transformers and generators.
Inside wiremen
Electricians who are under this category do the installations and maintenance of the electric wires that go into large structures like office buildings, factories, even places like airports These structures can be new or old industrial buildings renovated for a new use.
As the names of this type of Covington electrician, they usually spend most of their hours working indoors. Expectedly, they are able to work with various blueprints for the building they are working in. Also, they troubleshoot problems that may come up in these older structures and systems.
On the whole, they specialize in troubleshooting electrical problems in their places of work.
Outside linemen
On the other hand, the electricians that work outdoors for most of their careers are called outside linemen. Their type of work usually has to do with transformers, transmission lines, and including traffic signs.
In contrast to their counterpart, outside linemen must have some moderate amount of physical fitness. The big reason is that part of their work is climbing telephone and electrical poles.
Their work conditions can be difficult. Sometimes, they have to endure harsh weather conditions in doing their work.
In a looser sense of definitions, this is also usually used in the classification of the work of an electrical contractor.
Job responsibilities
Here’s a random list of some of the electrician’s work responsibilities in line with his work. One is maintaining and replacing circuit breakers, fuses and wires in his assigned work place. He can install systems that help computers, security and fire alarms to function properly.
He can locate and replace faulty wiring that could pose a safety hazard, while being able to maintain and replace circuit breakers, fuses and wires in his place of work. He also should be able to work out the layout and wiring installation through an entire building or buildings.
Electricians need to teach and appraise electrician apprentices.
Apprentice program
If someone would like to become an electrician, that person needs to have to earn a license as a Journeyman Electrician. This involves finishing a two year degree. Also, he can have   four years of work experience under the supervision of a professional electrician.
As an apprentice, the main goal is to be able to be focused on absorbing and understanding every detail of the job. The main advantage of serving as an electrician apprentice is getting to learn and understand the application of various safety guidelines and job management over and above the basic skills taught by his mentors.

1964 Linemen in Barstow
Mainly for my kids and their kids I’ve completed digitizing all the families videos, tapes, films and pics, etc.. Now I am editing and enhancing them (inspired with software used for the "Get Back" documentary). Next job, categorize them and put comments in where memories might add context.
In the beginning my Dad is seen climbing a power pole. Yeah, maybe some background music would add to this, but it won’t be Wichita Lineman, that was a telephone lineman. Power-linemen have a much more dangerous job.
I say its 1964 (but could be wrong) because at end of this video, there I am, looking to be at least 5 at what I remember was the Barstow mobile park we often stayed.
I recognize some faces of the linemen as well, but can’t place their names but for one! Hey Danny Janelli and Debbie Janelli Dennis , at point 1:24, I bet you’ll recognize him too ;-) Joe Janelli, his wife and Paulene were my parents best friends during this era. They worked hard and played hard. The play hard part especially when the wives and kids were not visiting while on the road. There’s just a few seconds of footage of the world famous El Rancho Motel (off of Route 66) after another long day enjoying a beer (or two).
Then the film cuts to my Dad water skiing. Then back to work. This time sky high on Power Transmission Towers.
Many don’t know this about me but out of high school my dad got me a union ticket in IBEW. I was a groundman (AKA “grunt”) for almost three years. Not a lineman, just looking at this film gives me scardy-heightess.
So what do grunts do? Using ropes and pulleys they pull stuff up to the linemen, pull stuff down, get cussed at, drive the trucks, have to laugh at the Linemen jokes, dig ditches… It was digging ditches in hot scenes like this that made me realize more than anything else, manual labor was not for me.
