Hi I hope you are well! For a while now I've been wondering why Gon used nakama ao instead of tomodaichi to refer to Killua at their farewell, I've been thinking about this a lot but I haven't been able to get answers😭

Hello! I'm feeling great now that Togashi is back!

Here are two posts on the topic that I think are insightful, both from @telehxhtrash: Post 1, Post 2

The first post gives more thorough definitions of these words for context. I more-or-less agree with the second post in that the use of the word nakama may have been unintentionally hurtful to Killua because he had been so concerned about the delineation between whether they're friends (友達, tomodachi) or comrades (仲間, nakama).

I think there's one important piece that gets left out of discussions on this topic a lot, and that's that Gon was quoting Kite when he used that word. It makes sense Kite would use a less-strong word because he has a different relationship to Gon and Killua than Gon and Killua have to each other. Gon may have been trying to reassure Killlua that everything's fine now in a larger sense--Kite isn't upset about what happened, and the three of them can still consider themselves part of the same group.

I think Gon chose to quote Kite here rather than use his own words because he knows what he did hurt Killua deeply, he knows Killua is leaving him to pursue his own newfound purpose, and he doesn't want to push his feelings or ideas about what role they have in each others' life on Killua at this time because everything is so complicated and delicate. He's trying to be considerate and let Killua go because he blames himself for what happened between them, and pushing strong friendship words on Killua right now might backfire: Killua might refute them and make their parting hurt even worse, or it may make Killua change his mind about what he's steeled himself to do (leaving him). Gon doesn't want to interfere with Killua's decision.

Killua isn't shown reacting negatively at all to the use of the word nakama when it's initially used. (I'm not a big fan of the way it was translated, but anyway.) Of course he looks terribly sad when he turns away from Gon when they're leaving each other, but whether that's primarily because they're separating or also because of the use of that word, it's hard to say. I do think it's a factor, Togashi is smart and careful about wording and I doubt it's a coincidence that Killua happened to have a crisis about exactly that word and then Gon happened to use that word when they were separating--even though it was a quote rather than his own personal appraisal of their relationship.

I'm torn with this because the separation is complicated: I don't see it in an entirely negative light, I don't think it's a doom and gloom thing where things are horrible between them when they part, but the separation has a bunch of complicated emotional things going on between them and Gon's use of nakama (not intended to be hurtful but unintentionally hurtful) is one of those things.

As usual, I want to reiterate that my belief is in time they will reunite and make things right in their relationship. My only caveat to that is Togashi's ability to reach that point in the manga, but aside from that I remain optimistic about where their relationship is headed even though there are a lot of painful and difficult miscommunications between them currently.

Gon is forced to spend time with Marigold, when he'd rather chase Killua. It seems Marigold considers Gon a hero and wishes to impress Killua by proving themself one too. Gon's insecurity grows.

I saw the previous question you were asked about the ending D of hxh. Along those same lines, I wanted to ask you, do you think killugon will continue to be “something” in hxh? By something I mean that I thought that Killugon was something subtextual in hxh but done on purpose, and that the ending was going to be them being "canon" but in a subtextual way like "we will be together forever" or something like that, do you think that killugon will continue to be “something” or Togashi never saw them in that way? thank you for your answer. I really enjoy your hxh takes.

I think the Killugon subtext is on purpose, as you said, 1) because Togashi is an intentional writer, and 2) there's just SO much subtext, it would be hard to have written it that way accidentally. There's tons and tons of posts on Tumblr about this, I'll try to find a few when I get home. I know @hunterxhell and @telehxhtrash have written a few posts about it and I have a few at the link:

Whether Togashi will continue to keep them together - even subtextually - I don't know. He does write shippy subtext often, sometimes even becoming quasi-canon like Illumi's murder-engagement to Hisoka. And when they part at the world tree, they say it's "for now" and Alluka says she'll "give Killua back" to Gon after she's monopolized him for a while.

Then again, YYH had the shippy subtext, too, but Yusuke still got married to Keiko in the end...

I don't expect them to **officially** end up together, unless something really changes at Weekly Shounen Jump between now and when HxH ends. There's a reason his pitch for a baseball(?) manga about gay and trans characters was rejected in the 90s.

Personally, I'd want to see "something" in the ending... Or honestly more than something... Like they are "partners" in a business venture but maybe another kind of partner too, you know? Unstated but we'd all know what it means. That kind of thing. As close to officially together as you can get without bringing down the wrath of the editors / close-minded fans. HxH is often ambiguous so something where they're ambiguously together would be right in line with how the manga is. I think it's equally likely they'd end up with other people though - the first love you lost before you realized what it was.

But I'm not a fan of this "Gon is with Noko but he really loves Killua" stuff because like I said in the other ask, it just makes me feel bad for Noko!

this is just a simple super subjective meta (?) that i thought of while i was reading the manga before and remembered when you mentioned them as catalysts to gon’s feelings in your previous post.

ok knuckle and shoot. it’s amazing how togashi managed to insert meaningful characters in hxh and i think knuckle and shoot are two of the most important ones in chimera ant arc, relative to the characterization of gon and killua, as we can see how they both PARALLEL and CONTRAST each other in a way. i believe togashi deliberately wrote their characters as such because:

he wants to showcase varying types of love; bcos

he wants readers to read through his contexts

at face value, knuckle and shoot are much like gon and killua, right? nen ability aside, it’s too obvious how their personalities kind of match. knuckle is much like gon, whereas shoot is much like killua.

BUT WHAT’S INTERESTING about them is how they CONTRAST gon and killua and how this contrast plays a role in chimera ant arc’s storytelling, and in togashi’s excellent ply in exposing romantic gay undertones throughout the arc. chimera ant arc, after all, is a romance and an epic in itself. togashi had to meticulously throw in characters that would represent something somehow, and not just there because he thought they looked cool.

and knuckle and shoot; well, for me, they represent what dudebros on redditors think of gon and killua and hunter x hunter in general, (i hate to say it but--) NO HOMO.

i think togashi placed their characters, that somehow parallel gon and killua personality-wise, specifically in this arc because he wanted to present a kind of love between two male friends. and by friends, i literally mean just close friends. and that he wanted to show us that this type of love that they have is very much different from the type of love gon/killua (who are also two male friends) has --> which, on the other hand, parallels more, in so many levels, with meruem/komugi’s (romantic love).

i really really hate to admit the “no homo” take but i feel this strongly as intentional for knuckle and shoot. although, of course, we never know they might turn out as lovers in the end. but at that point of the story, they are bros in battle. they are fighting to protect everyone and plan on surviving after that. none of them considered the possibility of leaving everything behind and of dying *ahem-killua-ahem* together because of sheer love for their bro. did they? if so, i don’t remember ever reading it in the manga.

also, aside from the one you initially pointed out, of shoot saying that his job is to act calm and stop knuckle (again, a parallel), i find that specific scenario play interesting because it’s shoot basically breaking down in front of knuckle (knuckle shedding his share of tears) and telling him to go and kick youpi’s ass for him. THIS is a contrast -- because what happened to gon and killua during that war was the complete opposite. and looking back i find that contrast funny because this is basically telling me that this is what would happen if there are no romantic feelings involved between the smol bois. would gon still push killua away? if so, would killua take it personally? if anything, killua might even smack gon in the head to bring him back to his senses and call him an idiot. but nooo, he didn’t because of an internal conflict caused by many things in his heart including his feelings for gon.

for me, while meruem and komugi represent romantic unconditional love, knuckle and shoot represent platonic love in this arc -- and somehow the story suggests that, at their young age and with everything that has happened, gon and killua are swimming in between those at that point.

There’s glitter on his cheeks, a sparkle that plays hide-and-seek between highlight of the moon and shadows of the night. It enhances his beauty, the swell of his cheeks and the cupid bow of his lips; his eyelashes and hair shimmer with it, like a fresh snow or—

Gon can’t help but reach out, cupping Killua’s cheek so that he meets his gaze. His blue eyes are shadowed navy in the dark, wide with confusion.

“You’re like a star,” Gon breathes, awestruck. Even with just the moon’s pale glow, he can see the pastel pink that spreads over Killua’s face, a familiar warmth against his palm. Before Killua can protest, he murmurs, “Can I make a wish?”

Killua’s lips tilt up at that, what must seem like a corny, childish request. He indulges him with an affirming hum.

Gon takes a steadying breath, inhales slowly and holds it in his lungs for a moment before wishing, “Stay with me forever.”

The skin beneath his hand heats up so quickly that he’s almost afraid Killua will spontaneously combust. Flustered, Killua jerks back just a little, enough that Gon’s hand slides away as he stutters, “W-What are you saying, idiot?”

Undeterred, Gon reaches out to grasp the back of Killua’s neck, the fine hair there soft against his fingers as he pulls Killua back towards him. He’s grinning, giddy with hope, as he presses his forehead to Killua’s in a comforting gesture. His shoulders relax and he nudges his nose against Gon’s in a silent apology.

But Gon doesn’t care about that, he’s used to Killua’s embarrassment and how he automatically flinches away from it. What Gon cares about, what he wants, what he’s wishing for—

“Marry me, Killua.”

oh wow i haven’t even looked at the leopike 5 + 1 fic in like a year and had convinced myself it was all unusable garbage, but i looked at it again & it’s shockingly salvageable?????  thank you so much for sending in this ask bc it made me actually open the doc again & see that it’s got some potential!!!!  here’s the first 250 or so words

“I just don’t see why you couldn’t have picked up your goddamn phone!” Leorio shouts, for perhaps the eighth time in this conversation.  “Gon needed you!”

“Gon had you.  He had Killua.  What was I going to do that you two couldn’t?” Kurapika’s tone is cool and clipped and it drives Leorio crazy, how he can remain so infuriatingly calm in the midst of an argument.

“What about me then, huh?  It wasn’t just Gon who needed you. I needed you, Kurapika.”

For just a moment, Kurapika looks disarmed and strangely vulnerable.  But the look passes.

“Believe it or not, I have obligations in my life besides attending to your every emotional need.”

Leorio laughs, but there isn’t any humor in it.

“Oh, right, your noble crusade.  When are you going to admit to yourself that it’s not even about the revenge anymore?  When are you going to admit that it’s just you refusing to actually sit with your grief?”

Kurapika’s eyes go wide.

“I beg your pardon?” he demands.  Finally, a bit of anger.  Leorio knows it shouldn’t feel like such a victory, but it does.

“You’re not righting some great injustice, Kurpaika!  You’re not really avenging anyone.  You’re just unable to find any other way to cope with what you went through!  And it was awful, I know that.  Or maybe I don’t.  How could I know, really?  But the point is you’ve gotta figure out a way to work through it, because I am done watching you destroy yourself and the people who love you over this.”

I really love reading the stuff @telehxhtrash writes so I happened to see her post about a possible HxH/Nier:Automata AU with Killua as 2B and Gon as 9S.  Since I heard a lot of good things about this game (I own it myself because of my best friend who ADORED the game, but I didn’t get to play it yet) so I was ...kinda excited about the idea! Since then I started watching a lets play of the game to catch up with the story and the characters and of course I had to draw the character designs.  So have Killua as 2B (or 2K) and Gon as 9S (or 9G)! I also really wanted to draw Killua in 2Bs dress, ngl

hiiii! of course i have ahhhhhh! saw this ask the minute i woke up and i love it because i can’t stop thinking about killugon dating the whole damn day! but i’m writing this while i overtime at work bcos i can’t hold it in any longer ;-;

ok the day (or night) they made it official, they’re flustered little beans that can’t wipe wide smiles off their faces. gon can’t contain his happiness he kept telling killua “i love you!“ while on the way home and not letting go of his hand. they hold hands so tight if either were an ordinary person their knuckles would break

gon kisses killua’s cheek before parting ways that night. he didn’t want to kiss him yet because he wanted it to be *special*. killua, on the other hand, wanted a kiss on the lips (damn it, gon!!), but ok he maybe some other time. he had to calm his freakin heart first from beating too fast

they wouldn’t be able to sleep. they’d keep talking all night and dawn

if they’re not talking, they’re thinking of each other. all the damn time. they would associate everything they own and see with each other. oh, a leaf *gon < 3*. oh, the clouds are pretty today *killua is prettier*

gon, for the life of him, just WON’T SHUT UP about how he loves killua. this boy sends “i love you i love you i love you” texts at random times of the day. killua LOVES it but he always replies with “yeah yeah i know idiot......... i love you too” killua’s i love yous are like a drug to gon. they feel like he rarely says it so when killua does say it, gon’s high -- so high he almost breaks his phone in his hands from giggling too much, or almost crumples killua into a tight hug

gon showers killua with kisses on every inch of his face ASIDE from his lips. doesn’t kiss killua on the lips YET. he keeps telling himself that he’s saving it for the *perfect moment* BUT IN FACT he’s a nervous little shit. gon feels like he would EXPLODE when he finally kisses killua on the lips. damn, just looking at him makes him want to melt. so... he doesnt yet. not yet not yet

KILLUA WILL BE THE ONE TO GO IN FOR THE FIRST KISS.

i picture it as something like this: walking home from their date, gon just won’t STOP saying “i love you” -- partly bcos gon loves seeing the color of killua’s cheeks when he tells him “i love you”, and partly bcos he likes to tease him. he says “say it back say it back say it back :D” killua would be like “no dumbass shut up” (teasingly) so gon keep saying it and mid-talking killua just smacks his lips onto his and says “that’ll shut you up idiot!” GON IS 1000% STUNNED he doesn’t move for SECONDS and killua will start to worry but then gon pulls him in for another kiss and stealing kisses will be their thing from then on

LOTS OF HUGS. holding hands will never be enough

RANDOM BITES. gon will bite killua’s arm, killua will bite gon’s shoulder, in between cuddling gon will bite killua’s cheek, killua will bite gon’s nose and ear FOR NO REASON OTHER THAN BECAUSE A KISS JUST ISN’T ENOUGH lmao

AND LASTLY (not the last in my head believe me i have tons of headcanons), they’d always look out for each other from the corners of their eyes, from across the room while they’re at a party, while eating. killua sees a crumb on gon’s cheek so he wipes it off with a thumb while gon’s busy talking to leorio over dinner. gon brushes away strands of hair from killua’s face while killua’s busy playing a videogame aksdfjdskfjkdslfj

look at me getting carried away lol like i said i have tons of these on my plate but this answer is already getting longer so i think i need to stop myself here HAHA thank you so much for sending this ask. i love it i love talking and thinking about killugon in a relationship because the there’s so much FLUFF potential and i really think that they’d make a really cute couple!

18. Do any of your stories have alternative versions? (plotlines that you abandoned, AUs of your own work, different characterisations?) Tell us about them.

this is a really interesting question, but i actually don’t think i have any.  coming up with ideas/plot lines is one of the hardest parts of writing for me, so once i’ve decided on a direction for the story, i rarely, rarely veer off course.  i actually much prefer writing the story to coming up with the idea, so once i’ve got something solid, i tend to stick with it.

Hey everyone! Thanks to your votes on tropes, Fae!Killua and Prince!Gon are about embark into a magical wilderness on a treasure hunt and discover romance along the way. The story will feature many tropes not listed in this post. We need to vote on the treasure as it will influence the shape of their story from the very start.

Their story will begin...

In a Magical/Fairy Tale AU:

Killua Zoldyck is an ex-assassin, part of a deadly fae family of assassins for hire. To avoid trouble, he keeps his fae identity and his past a secret. He now works to protect lives, as a bodyguard for hire, but believes himself a monster and unloveable due to his past. He’s starved for love, affection and touch, yet keeps his relationships distant, not wanting to risk being known for who he is.

Gon Freecss is Prince of Whale Island, a small kingdom. His father vanished when he was small, lured away by fascination with all things fae. Gon’s adopted mother, Queen Mito, fears losing him the same way, particularly since Gon displays some of the same rare talents, perhaps due to an unrecognised strain of fae blood in their family line. But Gon’s royalty and talents make it hard for him to meet peers. 

Gon left Whale Island to satisfy his wanderlust, and also hoped to end his loneliness. But to keep Queen Mito happy, he vowed to return and not marry while he was away. Therefore, Gon never puts down roots and keeps his romantic relationships shallow. He keeps his identity a secret. True love is for others, not him.

Fae Bodyguard! Killua and Prince! Gon arrive separately in an isolated town on the border of a magical and dangerous region that attracts treasure hunters. Gon finds himself on a quest that will take him into its heart. Despite his physical skills, he would be wise to hire a bodyguard.

The object of Gon’s quest will influence the shape of the story. What treasure is he seeking? Anyone can join in and VOTE HERE!
