speaking of old furry media that shaped me as a kid....any of my followers know how the endless forest is doing? i know there's been a remaster (or remake?) in development for a while but other than that i got no idea how it's going. is the community still strong or is that game basically dead?

oh, i remember the endless forest! it was such a trippy concept of a game. now that i know you played it, i can totally see some of the influence in your art - mostly in the general tone of how you draw deer themselves. something about the pose and shape of them feels very similar to that game.

It was! It was so incredibly magical for the first few years, I've never felt anything alike before or after tef. You just had to be there to know the feeling.

I've cleaned out most of my screenshots of that game, but here's some for nostalgia's sake. I know some of my old fellow tef players follow me still!

Have you ever played Minecraft on a server, and spent a few minutes crouching and following each other? Doing that little wave? Have you felt that wonderful, wordless connection of someone just saying “hi” through nothing but in-game action, only to never see that person again?

What if I told you that there was an MMO where that’s the ENTIRE GAME?

Something you might not know about me is that I hate MMOs with a burning passion— I find them to be shallow, manipulative games that exist solely to drain the money and time of their players, offering little to nothing in return.

But so far, I have one exception.

“The Endless Forest” is an arthouse MMO. That’s right— an arthouse. MMO.

I’m talking “can be and has been put in museums”.

Now, let me tell you why you should play this game.

That human interaction I described earlier? That’s it. That’s the game.

There’s no chat. Usernames are invisible to players— deer can’t read, after all, so each player is given a unique, randomly-generated symbol, and is then plopped into a world with their fellow deer.

There are no items, no combat, no dailies, no crafting. You can’t customize your character on your own, but other players can change the appearance of your deer if you let them.

It’s just pure humanity.

It’s free. But actually.

TEF isn’t only free to download (the servers are funded by various cultural institutions), but there are zero micro-transactions.

Zero.

There’s no manipulation. No reward for playing frequently. No pressure to log on at certain dates or times. No bullshit.

There’s actually two versions of this one!

It’s based on this really old mmo type game I used to play when I was younger and comparing it to a mmo game I currently play.

The Endless Forest is it’s name. You play as a deer with a human face in a forest. There’s no global chat so the only way to communicate is with emotes and calls. It’s still available to download and play. It’s community is still somewhat active on the official website’s forum, but it’s definitely a lot more quiet than it used to be. I hear there’s a remake in the works.

Unlike The Endless Forest, Sky does allow chatting unlocked and such. But it hit me in the middle of the night that “oh I’ve done this before but different”. Which resulted in me digging up my old TEF account and booting it up on my slowly dying laptop that runs it at 5 fps.

Will the Texas Energy Fund Work?

Seriously? The Texas Energy Fund was set up to boost power to the electric grid. But then a company lied on its application to cash in. Now, angry lawmakers are taking a closer look into the PUCT's vetting processes.

The Texas Energy Fund (TEF) was supposed to be a safe bet for boosting the state's power grid. But recent events have raised serious doubts about how secure it really is. Some now worry the fund might be as risky as handing over the keys to a 16-year-old for a long, costly joyride. Propping up new Texas power projects must be in good hands. But the TEF is off to a rocky start. 

The Texas Energy Fund Comes Under Fire

The TEF offers grants and low-interest loans to add dispatchable power to the Texas grid. The logic is that Texas will have more power making capacity in the future. Plus, these power plants can get the juice flowing in a jiffy. But not all projects can receive a loan or grant. Solar, wind, and battery projects don’t qualify for funding. So, natural gas plants are the primary target for this money. 

The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) denied a loan to Aegle Power after it found serious problems with its application. Aegle Power claimed NextEra Energy as a co-sponsor for its 1,292 MW natural gas project. However, NextEra never agreed to be part of the project. In fact, it had no idea it was even listed. Oops! 

This raised major concerns about how the PUCT and its contractor, Deloitte, vet projects for the Texas Energy Fund. According to official documents, Deloitte has a four-year contract worth $107.4 million. And for that amount of money, state officials expect top-notch vetting. So, some explanation is needed. Soon, state leaders will get just that. 

Lawmakers Want Answers

Six lawmakers serve on an advisory committee for the TEF. That advisory committee’s next hearing, scheduled for October 8, will focus on how Deloitte reviewed the initial submissions. At some point, the advisory panel will convey more details to the Senate Finance Committee.  

Aegle Power’s fraudulent attempt now calls into question whether the process is tight enough to catch any other dishonest actors. The success or failure of the TEF could have a major impact on whether Texas has cheap electricity in the future.

NextEra’s requested removal from the Aegle project shook confidence in the Texas Energy Fund. The PUCT promised that Deloitte carefully reviewed each application before setting it to advance. Yet, lawmakers want to know how a convicted fraudster like Aegle Power’s CEO could slip through.

With so much money at stake, officials are concerned. The upcoming scrutiny should give Texans answers, but many wonder if others may game the system. But for now, PUCT must ensure the fund does what it should: support reliable power projects.

Really enjoyed the Frog event--got a nice couple more hours of play in before my phone bank today, the deck is in a great place--it doesn't walk away with games, but it also doesn't get run over easily, either, which is idea: solid play either way, so your decisions are what get you wins rather than some spinning wheel from emblems and stuff. I particularly like when you can sac something to draw, and even absorb some abilities--it doesn't come up too often, but every now and then it does, and being able to find those spots is one of those decision points I'm talking about. Some are gimmes, like the Offspring stun Frog, often can just eat the token for a free draw, or the hybrid ETB draw guys are usually free to sac for an additional draw, which is even better for the looter, since you see an extra card before discarding. The deck ended up shifting away from being too on-the-nose with Frogs and has control elements in a good amount of removal, but it's still pretty Frog-centric, so it still definitely felt in the spirit(/Frog) of the event. And the PWs can really drop the hammer: I had something like 5 going at once at most. The sweetest play was using my cowboy Oko to turn into a copy of the BG surveil land which had been turned into a creature by my Nissa, Who Shakes the World, and then I since Oko was a copy of the land, I then used him and one of my other lands to cast Jace, the Mind Sculptor off of them, who then bounced my opponent's scariest creature--Uro--and the rest of my board could fend off everyone else, so my PWs were ready to get cracking the next turn--fortunately never saw any mass bounce spell this entire event, so other than that, there was no way my opponent was breaking through in the meantime, so he scooped after Uro drew and his grave couldn't support an escape since it was obvious the PWs would overwhelm him in the coming turn. Another really sweet interaction that came up regularly was my Teferi that gets counters per draw, and Jace Brainstorming every turn--so Teferi makes a guy, and then the Brainstorm juices the PW and the tokens so they get out of hand extremely quickly while also making Teferi just about impossible to take down outside of PW removal, since there's always a burly blocker to contend with, which perfectly splits attention, cuz--and this came up--if you deal with Tef, that means you aren't dealing with these giant tokens who will only grow larger and, indeed end the game. And that's the main appeal of the deck--numerous decks--that split attention between PWs and powerful boards, such that your opponent can't possibly hand both sources of pressure and so you can win with whichever aspect he doesn't deal with--and if you're not in a position to close, your guys just accumulate advantages over time. Like I had Phyrexian Vraska once, proliferating all my guys, and it was incredible, cuz it's just making everything scary in its own way simultaneously, perfectly overwhelming my opponent on what to respond to. The deck has wonderful reach, that way--especially if they're focusing on clearing my creatures, then my PWs just mop up. Such a neat deck/event.
