Collectively, these four high school seniors have volunteered over 538 hours at Blackberry Creek during their high school years alone (not counting all their hours in junior high)! While they have each far exceeded the 100 hour goal they set for themselves, they continue to come, simply because they love the animals and are just generally exemplary human beings. They’re here rain or shine, 100 degrees or 30, finish every project thoroughly, and have NEVER once complained despite the heavy lifting, dirty jobs, and eternal poop scooping volunteering here entails. Teenagers get a bad wrap in society, but these four turn that stereotype on its head (did we mention they’re also honor students and track/cross country stars??). We are beyond grateful for their dedication and are so proud of who they are. We can’t thank these amazing teenagers enough for all they’ve done for Blackberry Creek this year! Their commitment to our KEEPERS program has been incredible. Whether it’s monthly meetings, vegan donut making, helping with events, documentary nights, cleaning up after the animals, or coming early in the morning before school to feed and care for everyone, there is no more dedicated team of volunteers. One neat part about 4H/FFA is that students learn about finances. The not so neat part is they do so by raising and then betraying an animal who has learned to love and trust them (who they then sell to slaughter or breeding...followed by slaughter). Our KEEPERS students are learning about hard work through volunteering to care for the animals at Blackberry Creek and learning about fundraising through selling these raffle tickets the awesome folks at Disney donated! Ethical money making without exploiting others! Half of every ticket they sell goes to their college scholarship fund and the other half goes to the animals they love and care for at Blackberry Creek. ❤️ To support our KEEPERS program and our rescued animals simply click on the link in bio. Some of the high school students in our KEEPERS program, a compassionate alternative to FFA/4H, learned about foot care today and helped to give Huckleberry, Sunshine, Finnegan, Forrest, and Barnaby pedicures! They also showed some junior high students the ropes, mucked stalls, filled sandbags, and hung out with the special needs birds. Welcome Aurora! We recently took in eleven hens saved by a middle school boy whose parents were going to butcher them since they were no longer producing eggs. They are now all affectionately named after Disney princesses by the teenagers in our Keepers program! They learned how to do health checks, mite/lice prevention, identification banding and toenail trimming too.
