He was just a humble preacher's son. And yes, he had his demons, but they never stopped him from searching for beauty. Because when you find beauty, you find inspiration. If, that is, you stay as determined as Vincent. Never stop, no matter how many failures. When you know you're doing what you're meant to do, you have to try.
Ted Lasso, Season 3 Episode 6, Sunflowers
Van Gogh is the finest painter of them all. Certainly, the most popular great painter of all time. The most beloved. His command of colour, the most magnificent. He transformed the pain of his tormented life into ecstatic beauty. Pain is easy to portray, but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world. No one had ever done it before. Perhaps no one ever will again. To my mind, that strange, wild man who roamed the fields of Provence was not only the world's greatest artist, but also one of the greatest men who ever lived.

This episode means so much. Beyond my VIVID imagination. It was the episode that confirmed - like for real confirmed - that Roy and Jamie are something. Roy was in anguish and didn't know where to put it (I mean personally I'm sure he knew exactly where he wanted to put it... boom). But it wasn't until Jamie expressed how excited he was to spend a wild night in Amsterdam that Roy acted.
Maybe it was a bit of jealousy at the thought of Jamie getting drunk and hooking up with someone. Maybe all their early morning training sessions taught Roy that Jamie was the right kind of person to spend time with when you're emotionally distraught. Maybe he just wanted Jamie all to himself and faked a training session to get him off the bus so he could spend that night with him without all the others.
But Roy and Jamie had some honest moments of connection together. Roy allowed himself to be vulnerable and let Jamie teach him something for once. Jamie became the Dad figure and the Coach and then destroyed all our hearts with that traumatic reveal. These - even the awful things - were beautiful, beautiful moments that - like everybody else's moments - transcended sex. The beautiful moments between Rebecca and her Dutch guy. The connection between Trent and Colin. The team finally having their pillow fight, y'all. Ted, connecting with all the reasons he needed to go home to his son (and accidentally inventing Total Football 45 years after it was first invented).
Don't get me wrong. I love the episodes that show us AFC Richmond on the pitch, doing their thing, and I love the episodes that bring it back to soccer but this episode lives in my heart and it will always be my favourite.
PS - did Dani ever see his tulip?

I needed to make a post off of this one because... it just explains so much more. This hits so many new tones now- this show is known for their layers and callbacks and now going back to that moment even though it was wrong, he made Keeley practically bid for him as a trauma response. He had another lady he knew bid on him, almost guarantied as a safety net. This man has never known a lick of peace as a child. As a teen. Hell, his father took him to the redlight district to become a man at fourteen years old. A night that Jamie even now, comes to barely remember most likely because he blocked it out. Hell, if he was in the district, god knows if his father was making him do to forget or to be more of a man. a child being forced to lose his virginity to an adult because a parent said that was what you needed to be a man. From a man who abused him constantly. Verbally. Physically. Mentally. Every form imaginable up to present day. Topping that- his mother wasn't exactly in the picture- did she know how bad he was and left him with his father? His mother never fought for him. He has been alone. Building those walls to be like his dad because no one ever messed with him. Jamie Tartt as far as we know, up until AFC Richmond, has not known a father figure, a friend, no support system, no healthy relationships. The one person he found solace in as a kid, the man who he had a poster of on his wall, and someone who coached him one on one for several months while knowing he was being used as an emotional punching bag {and dealt with because in a sense, trauma response, used to it}, feels safe enough to tell him this. Feels free enough around him. Jamie found sanctuary in the one man who he idolized for years. and you bet your ass Roy Kent will protect his loved ones and family. Jamie has found a family in Richmond, and has found that and more in Roy fuckin' Kent.

Okay we've briefly turned into a Ted Lasso blog because I finally caught up tonight and holy FUCK sunflowers was unparalleled. Literally everything about the episode could be explored for hours but I really just want to quickly highlight one thing:
Obviously everyone is talking about the newest layer of Jamie's trauma that's just been revealed (and good on Roy for immediately acknowledging it as trauma!!), and I'm not going to try and do any sort of deep dive because a hundred people have already done it better than I ever could, but there's one thing that no one seems to be talking about, and maybe it's because I just binged the whole show in two weeks so I remember season one better than folks who watched it when it came out, but y'all remember the charity auction, right? First time we meet Jane, Rupert shows up and steals the show from Rebecca, Ted forces Roy and Jamie to sit at the same table because he's trying to make them get along, and, oh yeah, everyone's bidding on the players?
Now, we laugh when Roy and Keeley are messing with Jamie about having to have sex with the highest bidder and he sort of freaks out and then angrily overcompensates when he realizes they aren't serious. I think Jamie from this episode is mostly remembered as being a dick and a shitty boyfriend (and yes what he did pitting Bex and Keeley against each other in the actual bidding war was definitely an asshole move). On a first watch he seems unreasonably upset about what everyone else thinks is a harmless joke. And since not being able to handle people taking the piss plays into our already established understanding of Jamie as a self-centered jerk who's not all that smart, we don't think to wonder if there's any more specific reason for his reaction than wounded pride.
I'm not doing deep character analysis tonight, as I've already said. But. Uh. Reevaluating that scene after what we learn in Sunflowers about Jamie's sexual history and trauma,,, might give it a different context
Anyway, yeah, I'll just leave y'all to think about that. And fuck James Tartt Sr I hope Roy beats his ass

I like to think that the bartender at Prik sees the news after Colin comes out and just smiles and goes, "Good for him."

finally got my ted lasso/colin hughes inspired tattoo 😭 i’m so in love with it, my artist made something even better than i’d been imagining
highlight of the appointment was my artist saying “i didn’t recognize you at first because you changed your name, but i knew this request wasn’t from a cis man”

I need someone to draw Trent and Colin going to a museum after thunderdong. And Trent drunkenly info dumping about whatever exhibit they're at while Colin laughs. Trent drank vanilla vodka for Colin, they can do this too.

One thing I noticed when Jamie was talking to Roy isd that Roy says "that must have been traumatizing" and after Jamie goes "oh you mean for me. I don't know, i don't remember". Uh....that's....interesting....

If you’d told me in S1 that in S3 Jamie Tartt would be teaching Roy Kent how to ride a bike I would have said DAMN THAT’S THE AMAZING CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT I ABSOLUTELY NEED TO SEE.
