the thing about 2x08 is it’s established how much Jamie is struggling….
….before we even see his father ….
But Roy doesn’t know any of that. And yet he acts on the situation without hesitation ❤️🩹

You know how in the Beard After Hours episode Beard sends The Pub Lads to Richmond’s secret stadium entrance? So they can frolic on the pitch?
It only just occurred to me that this is a direct contrast to Jamie refusing to get James, Denbo, and Bug onto Wembley’s pitch.
PB&J never asked Beard to do that. He just realized that it is something they would treasure. And it is also something they, as genuinely decent people, deserved such a gift.
And I have to imagine that the idea for it came to Beard because of the James et als bullshit.

I’m particularly unhinged about how Roy offering to train Jamie is arguable a direct continuation of and parallel to the locker room hug.
Both are instances where Jamie must be feeling utterly alone, exposed in a terribly vulnerable situation he has no idea how to change or remove himself from. At Wembley, it’s a moment of acute crisis; at Richmond ever after Zava’s arrival it’s a slow, nagging thing – but whether it’s him being frozen in shock after punching his dad or very, very deliberatedly holding his emotions in after Zava steals his goal, it’s Jamie struggling to deal, and being all alone in that struggle.
Except, he isn’t alone, is he, because Roy is there. Roy is there and he sees Jamie and he chooses to act in both instances, giving Jamie exactly what he needs at each of these moments. A hug, for touch and comfort and safety when that is what Jamie clearly craves; a sense of agency and the means to change his unhappy situation when this is what will serve him best.
Just. Something about the grace of it; so unexpectedly being caught and held and held up when you thought you were all alone and falling. Someone’s there, and they’ve noticed you struggling and they’ve got you. The way that feeling must stay with Jamie after Man City, leading him to immediately trust and accept Roy’s offer of training at Ola’s, rather than say suspecting Roy of making fun of him for finding himself in this situation – not unreaonable given their history.
(And how heady it must be for Roy, too; for this angry man with such a bleak idea of how he affects the people around him to realize that he can be this for someone else? It’s not just Jamie who carries that hug and everything it made it feel with him. Roy’s risking something here, too, making an offer that might be refused or mocked by someone who was once an enemy – but he dares make it becaue the last time he reached out to Jamie, Jamie didn’t push him away but clung onto him for dear life.)
I mean. The way they are so good for each other? The way they put themselves out there to be there for one another and make each other better? Unhinged.

Because I'm in the pain fandom lol I rewatched Ted Lasso 2x08 but only the locker room post Man City loss scene and now I've got Jamie Tartt feels again so I'm gonna just feels dump for a moment.
When Jamie hit his dad and James Sr. stood up angry getting ready to punch him back, Jamie looked so fucking terrified! That look on his face just said "oh shit oh no he's coming he's angry I made him angry I fucked up I fucked up".
But Beard comes in and drags him away in time and now everyone including Jamie is too stunned to move in the aftermath a d the silence lingers and no one moves!
AND THEN THE HUG! THE HUG!
I have a lot of feels a out this hug but right now I'm focusing on one aspect of it. It's the sounds of Jamie legitimately crying into Roy's neck that is currently breaking me. You can hear him sniffling and gasping but it's the kind you make when you're trying to not full on sob but you can help but make some sounds and cry. Your breath hitches in your chest and your nose starts to run and the sobs start falling out of you but your trying so hard to not completely breakdown.
And this is happening in Roy's arms surrounded by the whole of AFC Richmond with whom he's still working on bonding with and they all just saw him being abused verbally emotionally and physically by his dad and it's clear that this isn't the first time and now they all know.
I desperately want to know what happened after this. Especially with Beard full on leaving and Ted needing to go back after having left to call Dr. Sharon. I want to know how long Jamie cried into Roy's neck. What was it like when he finished? How did the team react? What did Ted do when he returned to the locker room? Was everyone already on the bus when he got back? WHAT WAS THE BUS RIDE HOME LIKE?! What happened to Jamie in the aftermath!?
And another thought but this season they're going to go back and play Manchester again and this is in the trailer (Jamie looking stressed as he walks onto the pitch and all of the Man City fans are clearly booing him in the backgroudn) and I HAVE FEELINGS!
What Jamie must be feeling having to go back after what happened last time. And the treatment he's recieving from the fans is horrible but is Sr. there!? Jamie worrying about his dad showing up? Protective team maybe? Like I wanna see the team people protective of him and being like "he won't get near you" and I want to see Jamie go absolute beast mode on Man City and Richmond win. I want this to end on a high note for him (with some angst beforehand please)
And that ends my current Jamie Tartt feelings dumb. I'm sure I'll have more.

The thing about Jamie and Ted is that they're in the somewhat unusual position of being thematically significant to each other's arcs without their actual interpersonal relationship ever being particularly central to the show — arguably because of that thematic significance.
This isn't so much the case in the first season, when Jamie represents an external source of conflict for Ted and their interactions — the positive reinforcement conversation in 1x02, Jamie faking an injury and Ted shouting at him in 1x06 — tell us about both of them more or less equally. Once we get to seasons 2 and 3, however, Jamie becomes a vehicle through which to explore Ted's trauma in a lot of their shared scenes: he remembers seeing Jamie being abused by his father during a panic attack where he's also thinking of Henry, and James coming into the locker room at Wembley is what prompts him to tell Dr. Sharon about his father's suicide. He cannot imagine a father's presence being worse than his absence, and so he tells Jamie that his dad made him a better player, and later to forgive him. Jamie says he would tell his dad "thank you and fuck you", and it reminds Ted of his not at all comparable relationship with his mother. In essence, Jamie can't have scenes with Ted where he's open and vulnerable about his past and still have them be about him, not Ted.
#ted lasso#jamie tartt#ted lasso (the character)#when i first watched 2x08 i was convinced they put in the part where roy tells ms. bowen that phoebe's dad is a piece of shit to show why#he's the one to help jamie with his dad. ted has his trauma and higgins has... the societal tendency to assume the best of parent/child#relationships i guess but roy's willing to be like. yeah that guy sucks and has no redeeming qualities#i'm experiencing whatever the opposite of time healing all wounds is with the conclusion of jamie's arc with his dad#time has made me think of more things to complain about#or the same things but slightly to the left#i had such a hard time figuring out how to articulate this. still not entirely sure it makes sense#but i got tired of working on it so here you go#kvetch oc
