On April 6th, I went to an event with my friend. It was hosted by GAWA (a creative collective based in San Diego). It was a mixer event called, "Backyard Soundcheck", where they showcase multiple local DJ's, along with a few Filipino-owned small business vendors.

One of the vendors is AKO, where they specialize in making teas, coffee, and matcha! While my friend order a hojicha latte, I ordered a matcha latte. This is not our first time discovering AKO, since the non-profit organization that I am in has actually partnered with them in a couple events throughout the year!

Back to the drinks, although I find that the flavors were really good in regards to their balance in sweetness and richness, the price seemed fairly expensive compared to how small their cup sizes were. But I would still buy and support them considering how it is a small Filipino-owned business based in Southern California.

I do say that their matcha is one of my top favorite out of all the other matcha places I have tried. Their drinks are not too sweet, but it distinct flavor makes me want to drink more of it! They also do not charge for oat milk substitutes, which I find almost every other coffee place does (even at the boba spot I work at charges for milk substitutes). I also find myself comparing this business with Kubo Coffee, considering how their markets are niche within a tight schedule.

I feel like they were a perfect vendor for this event, since their aesthetic fits along the earthy and neutral tone of the environment---similar to the Kubo Coffee place I went to. Their customer service is also top notch and very enthusiastic. They also seem like they are very knowledgable in their coffee and teas when you ask them questions about their menu.

I did not try these items at the event, but I have tried it before---and it is their lychee infused black tea and their sticky rice tea! I do say that these teas are strong, and has a taste that some might like or dislike. But, it is absolutely perfect for those who don't really have a sweet tooth. Overall I find that their drinks are perfectly refreshing when it comes to the hot summer weather that is coming up!

I had a great time at the event, and I would say that AKO was the only vendor that I had the initiative to purchase from during the entirety of the mixer.

They don't have a specific store location, but they do make profit based on the gigs they schedule with other notable brands alongside San Diego, Los Angeles, and Orange County. It is an underrated gem considering how you would need to find them through various events, and not through a weekly schedule.

Today was a pretty productive day, went to a lot of places, and ofcourse, a tearoom! I was supadupa excited to have some tea and rest after all that walking. And I have to say this tearoom was some sort of oasis. "Čajovna U Zlatého Kohouta" has a very different vibe, etho- but not in the extra way most tearooms are, very quiet, eclectic and vintage feel. Felt like visiting a grandmas house and sitting down for a tea.

Apparently the tearoom has been standing for like, 30 years, it's a surprising number, here in central EU, the lifespan of tearooms can be pretty short (atleast Slovakia-wise). Some even turn to cafes before they face their sudden death- that's why I feel a need to support tearooms.

Today we had a "Korean Sencha". Would say it is very similiar to a classic Japanese Sencha, but less fishiness? Biterness and even saltiness definitely overpowered the first few infusions until we figured it out. When the sweetness came out, it was like your tongue was tasting music!

I love rich black teas and Yunnan Sourcing has provided another great one. This brew is filled with smoky rich malt tones allowing it to pair with red meats.

The temp dropped a bit this week in Michigan, so my timing was perfect to review this rich brew from Yunnan Sourcing. Their Premium AA Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong is an incredible pine smoked black tea with amazing depth.

My initial thought was that this tea was one dimensional, but I was wrong. This tea has great acidity, body, and integrated smooth mouthfeel with rich flavors of smoked toasted malt, tobacco, and grilled/smoked meats.

Pairing this will be fun. I happened to just smoke some Canadian bacon and it was a perfect pairing. This tea will work with game meats like duck and ostrich but pair well with a steak or pork burnt ends.

This has quickly become my favorite nighttime tea. Can this be purchased by the pound?!?! This tea really surprised me. I’m not a huge fan of lavender, but I’m starting to enjoy it a little more, over time. The lavender in this tea is not overpowering…it’s just the right amount to give a gentle floral note. I. LOVE. IT. Of course, what would a nighttime tea be without chamomile? There’s a healthy helping of chamomile and the herbal magic of lemongrass that creates such a soothing brew. It also contains blue mallow blossom which is said to soothe an irritated throat and calm a dry cough. Perfect if you’re feeling a little under the weather. @tiestatea has so many fresh blends and, this Lavender Chamomile is no exception. Me and my partner decided to visit this beautiful city and do some tearoom visits (Czechia has a LOT more tearooms than my homecountry). These next few days I'll be updating my tumblr blog with teaposts from said tearooms!!!

First stop is "Dobrá čajovna", the interiors looked amazing, filled with old and new ceramics like- everywhere, the amount of teas to pick from was ok. Decided to go for a yellow tea "Huang Ya", never had a chance to try one before, and honestly, no regrets,

Taste was somewhere between a white tea (sweet and not so strong) and a green tea (a bit of grassiness and maybe even a slight bitter-ish feeling)

Darjeeling tea with eucalyptus and shiso. Without milk, it's not as nice. A little too herbal. With both milk and sugar, it becomes much more fragrant and it carries the milk very well. Would recommend for milk tea.
