rwby fandom has a Particular very funny set of incentives where its like
a) rwby itself is a story written with and interested in nuance + moral complexity and it's most rewarding to engage with the narrative in that way;
b) rwby has a dedicated hatedom, which entails the development of a hate-fanon predicated on deliberate misinterpretation and bad faith reading of the text;
c) the fandom-wide persecution complex re: the preceding point makes platforming the hatedom [via mockery, rebuttal, or whining] broadly socially acceptable within rwby fandom spaces;
d) which serves to embed "[you/these people] don't understand nuance" into the fandom vernacular as an automatic response to perceived Bad Takes;
f) fans making hatedom watch a core part of their engagement with rwby fandom tend to gradually degrade their ability to differentiate hatedom bullshit from good faith discussion on parts of the narrative the hatedom fixated on (e.g., "ironwood right!" vs "ironwood's decisions all make sense from his point of view and it's reductive to read him as a one-note villainous caricature");
g) in a similar vein, because rwby hatedom constructs the hate-fanon primarily around (misogynistic) moral-reversal whereby male antagonists in prominent conflict with the main heroines are lionized while the heroines are reinterpreted as the 'real' villains (and female villains are variously either ignored, treated as accessories for male characters, or demonized), textual interpretations that engage with the moral complexity + nuance in the text (good characters can do bad things and be wrong in non-trivial ways, bad characters can be right and are always unapologetically humanized) become suspect in certain circles of the fandom;
h) ^ that is in addition to the general tendency, not at all specific to rwby fandom, among people who can't handle moral complexity or nuance to project their own black-and-white thinking onto everyone else.
…& the outcome of all this is to create a social environment in which the accusation of "lacking nuance" gets leveled at specifically readings predicated on the understanding that rwby is a story that wants and invites the viewer to think critically about its characters.
#reminiscing fondly about that time during v9 when people got really mad at me for pointing out that team rwby#fucked things up really bad with the red prince by reacting to him like he was a legitimate threat as opposed to#you know a toddler#<- not what prompted this post i just think that's the funniest example.#it's like. there's a pride the fandom takes in being able to Understand Nuance but that is defined in opposition to the hatedom#with the hysterical result that a subset of fans thinks sympathy for sympathetic villains and/or recognition of heroic flaws#evinces an inability to understand nuance

Yang and Qrow co-parenting Bby Ruby as tai goes through his whole family mandated mental breakdown fills my every waking thought
Qrow is single handedly handling all of ozpins secret missions now so all of remnant is on his shoulders, that combined with all the death and general tragedy in his family there’s no way the second he gets a moment of peace with his nieces he doesn’t pass the fuck out
Yang is just doing her best as qrow is usually busy saving all of remnant for months at a time to be home
(Additional hc because they’re living of of assumably two teachers salaries, Ruby and Yang wear a lot of school merch they get for free, cause buying new clothes is expensive and a hassle Qrow doesn’t really have the time for, and Yang can’t reach the counters)

#no you don't get it that's her SISTER#team rwby was SO much more of a family to weiss than her actual family#like she grew up in a mansion where. her father was abusive. her brother always took his side and helped him to stay out of trouble himself#her mother shut down and was entirely absent from her life due to her father's behaviour.#and her sister was hardly ever home bc of her military career and she counted each of her visits as a blessing#she idolized the shit out of winter but she was still never there. weiss grew up almost entirely alone. klein was her only present family.#and then she joined team rwby and she suddenly had 3 sisters she got to spend everyday with and she loved them all so much#and she even fucking says as much when she confronts jacques and says '[these aren't] friends. [they're] family.'#god everyone in team rwby has family trauma#yang grew up with no active parent for a long time since tai shutdown after summer's death and qrow was an alcoholic#(like yeah both of them loved her but neither was a good parent)#(if she can at 5 years old disappear into the woods for several hours with a toddler in a wagon behind her without any supervision#while said woods are filled with monsters then im sorry the parents aren't parenting)#and after the loss of her mother ruby was raised by yang who was literally only two years older than her#blake got the best deal but she got fucking groomed into hating and abandoning her parents by That Fucker#and we know how much his actions fucked her up for nearly her whole life#team rwby is a family and i would die on this hill i am crying as i write this#(the best deal parent-wise her parents are amazing. not saying she got a better deal overall)

Another thing about the ending of this fic that kills me: Penny's personality shift. After she kills Captain Soot and lies about it, she's less peppy, but more importantly: Penny begins to pick up on a lot of Captain Soot's verbal ticks. I like that little detail as a signal for "this wide-eyed optimistic character is starting to see the antagonist's point".

I just finished rewatching RWBY
And honestly i'm glad I did cuz it's been a long time and this show is frankly way better than I remembered. It starts out very fun and honestly funny and charming. But it always has a bit of that underlying hint at there being more at play. And then it takes its time to switch from rapid fire and more humorous, to weaving in more serious themes and ideas. Just like the characters uncover more and more of the truth.
And the way that it takes its time with every character. RWBY has never had a reason to think they'd get even 1 more season, but seeing how literally from the start they set up Ruby's breakdown in V9 with Oz telling her she needs to put her team above herself. The way the Mt. Glenn conversations come back with the Herbalist. The way the show consistently shows that those that came before failed because they gave into their fears and they closed themselves off. And showing how these kids push back against fear so much. And they fuck up and they fail and things keep going worse and worse and at the end of the day the thing that really matters is that they tried their best.
Idk, i'm having that empty void feeling after finishing a good story, and i'm very hopeful for the future of RWBY, but this show is honestly really good and doesn't get enough credit for the way it weaves in its themes so well. And how well CRWBY deals with so many real and difficult emotions with genuine care. That even when shit gets so dark in V7 and V8 there's still that gritted hope.
Anyway, my brain is too full of too many emotions, but RWBY is so good and underrated, and i'm really glad that CRWBY has poured so much love into this story.
