I adore picture book biographies because they can be such an accessible, interesting window into history for kids. Today's biography comes from my own collection, and is a great example of that. With "The Extraordinary Music of Mr. Ives: The True Story of a Famous American Composer" (2012), author-illustrator Joanne Stanbridge goes beyond just examining the life of composer Charles Ives, looking at how we was affected by one of the great tragedies of his time, the sinking of the Lusitania, how it influenced his music, and the unusual manner in which his previously unpopular compositions came to be a part of the culture. Possibly the only thing I love better than pie is traveling. So it's really no wonder that Marjorie Priceman's gorgeous "How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World" (1994) has been a favourite of mine for many years. It starts with the sweet premise that "an apple pie is easy to make" as long as the store is open to buy your ingredients, but what do you do if it's not? This sets off a wonderful 'round-the-world adventure to find everything from semolina wheat in Italy to cinnamon bark in Sri Lanka, and all the way home and through the steps involved in creating food from its components. Remarkably fun to read given how informative it is, the book even concludes with a simple recipe for apple pie. ⚫ This week we're gathering books about food with the Read With River Book Club. Activity books aren't usually my purview, but when the Read With River Book Club announced this week's topic, "Creativity", this one sprung immediately to mind: MaryAnn Kohl's "Storybook Art: Hands-on Art for Children in the Styles of 100 Great Picture Book Illustrators" (2003). Full of engaging but very doable art projects based on the familiar styles of favourite illustrators fro Don Freeman ("Corduroy") to Clement Hurd ("Goodnight, Moon") to Ian Falconer ("Olivia"), I still have the copy that I used 16 years ago, and it remains in print (and available in an e-book version) to this day! Teachers are so underrated. It wouldn't have happened decades ago too. A student in my school had cancer (in the '90s, in elementary school) and absolutely no one ever laughed at the situation. I am so pleased with how this activity went in class today. Thanks @curiousmindsatwork for the idea! I was a little worried that the kids wouldn't quite get it, they have just started nursery and I wasn't sure if it would be too abstract but they loved it!we started by looking at our smooth happy paper heart and then discussed things that might make our heart sad. We folded it with each unkind thing we thought of, giving it "wrinkles". Then we role played being kind to make the heart feel better and unfolded it with each suggestion. The children really seemed to understand the concept of the wrinkled heart and we talked about how even when we say sorry, unkind things make us sad for a lot longer and the wrinkles dont always come out. Hopefully we will have no wrinkled hearts in nursery now! 😊 #nursery #eyfs #wrinkledheart #teachersshare#teachersfollowteachers #psed #earlyyears

So excited about our new imagination tree! Each week we will hang different themed pictures as an invitation to create. The children can interpret this as they wish and will have a range of creative materials to access, no limitations!
