#Repost @toocoolformiddleschool with @get_repost ・・・ It’s kind of cool to see when one of your best practices takes off! One thing I’ve been doing for a few years now is something called “Starbucks Time.” I recognized that sometimes my students needed to work independently, without me yapping at them, and without working with a partner. But it kind of felt wrong, like I was being lazy, you know? Then I realized that as a college student I had to sit for extended periods of time in a coffee shop, without talking to anyone, without checking my phone, and without getting too off task when I had the whole internet at my fingertips. It was a skill and a discipline I had to practice! . So now when we are doing writing projects I give my students time to practice this skill as well. They can listen to whatever music keeps them motivated, and I even let them take out a snack if it’s not too distracting. We pretend that we’re at a Starbucks where we don’t know anyone, so there’s no talking. . We usually do this for about 15 minute sessions. I’ll check in with students at this point and see where they’re at, and if they need more instruction. I have 6th and 8th graders, so I feel like working independently like this every so often is good practice for them. . I first posted about this in 2017 (and I mention it a lot in stories) but recently I’ve seen lots of teachers trying it! It’s cool to see that one of the things my students really like is working well in other classrooms. Feelin’ “too cool” today! 😂 . #starbuckstime #independentwork #iteachmiddleschool #iteachenglish #iteachhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/BuXw55nh3oq/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=rreqcg2ptj8n

DID YU KNOW??? That Martin Luther King Jr didn’t die from the gun shot on that balcony? Nope...He actually survived that gun shot and was suffocated at St Joseph’s Hospital by a Doctor named Dr Breen Bland who was the chief neurosurgeon. #ITeachHistory #LittleKnownFacts https://www.instagram.com/p/CVal_WsFIFq/?utm_medium=tumblr

Of all the incredible people to be honoured this Black History Month 2020, and as part of the Read With River book club's Courageous Hearts theme, one of the ones I'm most proud to shine a spotlight on here on Instagram, for an international audience, is Viola Desmond, sometimes known as Canada's answer to Rosa Parks, and the first Black Canadian woman to appear on a Canadian banknote (the $10 bill). The beautiful "Viola Desmond Won't Be Budged!" (2010) by Jody Nyasha Warner, illustrated by Richard Rudnicki, tells the story of this amazing Nova Scotian, who never set out to be an activist, but was determined to be treated fairly and with respect. And so, in 1946, when she was told that she couldn't sit in "the good seats" in a movie theatre, Viola simply refused to accept it, and became an icon of civil disobedience for her troubles. A gorgeously colourful, wonderfully important picture book to remind us that civil rights struggles took place outside the familiar stories of the United States, and that we ALL have a responsibility to know our history. For more amazing stories of brave, bold, and courageous hearts, follow #findmestories_heart, and check out our other club members, tagged on the final slide! ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #noodlenuts_blackvoices #violadesmondwontbebudged #jodynyashawarner #richardrudnicki #violadesmond #violadesmondbill #canadianblackhistory #africancanadian #blackhistory365 #blackhistorymonth #blackcanadianwomen #blackcanadians #blackcanada #ireadcanadian #canadareads #montessori #montessoriteacher #iteachhistory #canadianhistory #canadianhomeschoolers https://www.instagram.com/p/B81gz5Tn2cH/?igshid=d30lhgmjzzkx

The Embrace
Next Fall, Boston will welcome a 22 foot-tall bronze monument depicting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King mid-embrace.  The Embrace is based on a photo of the couple hugging after Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.   The poignant sculpture will sit on a new plaza in the country's oldest public park named after Dr. King's 1965 march from Boston's Roxbury neighborhood to Boston Common. 🗺Colonial Capital Tours ☎️ 800.334.3754 💻 www.ColonialCapitalTours.com 📧 [email protected] #studenttours #schooltrips #grouptours #educationaltours #fieldtrips #daytrips #onedaytrips #studentgroups #schoolgroups #educationalstudenttours #nycdoevendor #seniortrips #multidaytrips #studenttrips #educationalprograms #americanhistory #mlk #ihaveadream #mlkmemorial #boston #theembrace #MartinLutherKingJr #historyteachers #iteachhistory #bostoncommon #colonialcapitaltours @colonialcapitaltours

I've always loved tradition, and the comfort of old favourites, so it's no real surprise that one of my newest favourite Chanukah books is based on one of the most beloved series from my childhood. I was so excited to see that Emily Jenkins had adapted Sydney Taylor's adored characters to a picture book for younger children in "All-Of-A-Kind Family Hanukkah" (2018), and the results, stunningly illustrated by Paul O. Zelinsky, are everything I could have hoped for. They give the most beautiful glimpse into Jewish-American family life at the turn of the 20th century in New York, with large families, poor but full of love, crammed into tenements and celebrating the holidays with noisy good cheer. A heartwarming look at Jewish history and community in a time when we could all do to recognise and embrace each other's fundamental humanity and similarities. Highly recommended. ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #jewishnoodlenuts #noodlenutschanukah #allofakindfamilyhanukkah #allofakindfamily #emilyjenkins #paulozelinsky #sydneytaylor #sydneytaylor #jewishbooks #jewishstories #jewishbook #jewishholidays #jewishlife #iteachhistory #iteach345 #iteachsecondgrade #iteachthird #homeschooling #schoollibrarian #libraryhaul https://www.instagram.com/p/B6JS1MOHqJL/?igshid=ank32lffvo31

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Almost one decade ago in Washington D.C., the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial was dedicated to commemorate the Civil Rights leader's efforts to advance civil rights in the United States and around the world. Located next to the National Mall at 1964 Independence Avenue, the thirty-foot high granite memorial's address serves as a direct reference to the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Explore the Washington Spy Trail, a stretch of about 50-miles on Long Island's North Shore that was used by a Revolutionary War spy ring working for General George Washington. During the Revolutionary War, the Culper Spy Ring, a group of local patriots, used the route to evade British troops and deliver secret messages to General Washington.  The Spy Ring is credited by General Washington as being a leading factor in turning the tide of the American Revolution against the British.   Notable historical sites along the trail include Robert Townsend's (Culper, Jr.) family home at Raynham Hall in Oyster Bay; Target Rock National Refuge; Execution Rocks Lighthouse; and The Brewster House. 🗺Colonial Capital Tours ☎️ 800.334.3754 💻 www.ColonialCapitalTours.com 📧 [email protected] #studenttours #schooltrips #grouptours #educationaltours #fieldtrips #daytrips #onedaytrips #studentgroups #schoolgroups #educationalstudenttours #nycdoevendor #seniortrips #multidaytrips #studenttrips #educationalprograms  #covidfriendly #hikes #trails #historictrails #takeahike #georgewashington #longisland #washingtonspytrail #americanrevolution #iteachhistory #americanhistory #schoolfieldtrips #colonialcapitaltours @colonialcapitaltours

Online Art Exhibition ~ Unsung Women
Boston's Museum of Fine Arts celebrates women across cultures and millennia in eight extraordinary online artworks.  These unknown women, who passed techniques down through generations, are a reminder of how art brings people together. The presence of women artists and makers in museums and the art world has been unsung compared to that of their male counterparts. These online works, selected from the array of extraordinary works attributed to women in the Museum's collections, span the globe and millennia. Mostly by unidentified artists, they include examples of a lack of recognition despite difficult technique or working conditions as well as how women shared art with other women. Across cultures, the use of techniques such as pottery, weaving and dyeing were passed down through generations, emphasizing how art draws women together. Also available to enjoy online is Tamar Avishai's Podcast series about works of art in the Museum's exhibit, “Women Take the Floor.” The exhibit focuses on the overlooked and underrepresented work and stories of women artists. Although currently closed, the exhibit, with more than 200 works drawn primarily from the Museum’s collection, runs through May 3, 2021. The Museum of Fine Arts is the 17th largest art museum in the world. It houses more than 450,000 works of art, making it one of the most comprehensive collections in the Americas. 🗺Colonial Capital Tours ☎️ 800.334.3754 💻 www.ColonialCapitalTours.com 📧 [email protected] #studenttours #schooltrips #grouptours #educationaltours #fieldtrips #daytrips #onedaytrips #studentgroups #schoolgroups #educationalstudenttours #nycdoevendor #seniortrips #multidaytrips #studenttrips #educationalprograms #art #iteachart #arthistory #historyteachers #iteachhistory #iteachushistory #iteachamericanhistory #ushistory #americanhistory #socialstudies #iteachsocialstudies #mfaboston #boston #womenshistorymonth #planatrip #colonialcapitaltours @mfaboston
