A sharp-eyed reader might notice that when I illustrated THE FLYING MAN every time Otto Lilienthal created a new glider design I introduced it to the reader in the same way. Same pose, same composition same emotional keyword for that page of illustration.

I adore silly books for kids, but one of the best things about the picture book format is its ability to make tough subjects like poverty and racism accessible to young children in ways that are age appropriate. One of the most moving picture book biographies that I've read recently is "Gordon Parks: How the Photographer Captured Black and White America" (2015). Written by the prolific Carole Boston Weatherford and gorgeously illustrated by Jamey Christoph, the book details the life of famous black photographer and movie director Gordon Parks, and his dedication to bringing images of the struggles of the black community, from poverty to racism, into the public eye, while reflecting his subjects' strength and determination. From his birth (which he nearly didn't survive), to his triumph as one of the first widely popular photographers of colour for major media outlets, it's a fascinating story, if sometimes a difficult one. A great discussion starter for school-aged kids about racism and discrimination. ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #gordonparks #howthephotographercapturedblackandwhiteamerica #gordonparksfoundation #gordonparksphotography #carolebostonweatherford #caroleweatherford #jameychristoph #blackcommunity #blackhistory #blackhistory365 #blackkids #diversebooksforkids #weneeddiversebooks #diversityandrepresentation #representationinbooks #picturebookbiographies #igreads #read #booksaremylife #picturebook #learningfrombooks #homeschoolideas #readwithriver_discussions https://www.instagram.com/p/B4QVp1tnEMk/?igshid=lt7baonwqtk6

I first read about Fatima al-Fihri creating the world's oldest continually operating university in the ninth century a few years ago, and I was so excited to learn that there was a new picture book about her life and work. One Wish: Fatima al-Fihri and the World's Oldest University by M.O. Yuksel, illustrated by Mariam Quraishi, is a beautifully told and gorgeously illustrated picture book biography about a sadly under appreciated historical figure. The story follows al-Fihri through her her education at home, her life as a devout Muslim, and her time with her family, before ultimately coming to when she used her inheritance to create a university that could be attended by all. The art is wonderfully expressive with lots of bright and warm colours popping off the page. The historical notes at the end help add even more context. As a whole this is what I hope for when I open up a picture book biography. Definitely recommended. #books #bookrecommendations #bookreview #booksofinstagram #booksofinsta #bookstagram #reading #picturebook #picturebookbiography #childrensbooks #childrensnonfiction #kidsbooks #kidlit https://www.instagram.com/p/CgcZh7gL0aD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Today I’m honored to have a post over on The Horn Book’s Calling Caldecott blog. I’m a huge fan of The Horn Book and a giant nerd for children’s book awards, so this is a true delight for me. You can catch the post, on James Yang's A Boy Named Isamu, here.

The Book Baby I Never Thought Would Get Published and the Human Baby I Never Thought Would be in the Army
The Book Baby I Never Thought Would Get Published and the Human Baby I Never Thought Would be in the Army
Um… I got the third TIME STOPPERS book in the mail – the one that’s coming out super soon.
In sad news, I didn’t actually get to open the box of books, which is the ultimate writer happy moment because someone else did.
I know! I know! This means:
No unboxing video
No glorious moment when I sob at the fact that I gave birth to a book baby
This makes me superstitious like: Why? Why didn’t I…

Here is the next installment in my Diana Kennedy project. (Swipe to see both halves of the spread.) 🏝 When Diana was a child growing up near London, her Aunt lived in Jamaica. She would drop in from time to time, bringing treats from the islands, which Diana and her sister loved. 🥭🍍🥥 . . . #kidlitart #kidlitartist #illustration #illustrator #kristinwauson #smartdummieschallenge #digitalpainting #dianakennedy #foodanthropology #historicalillustration #nonfictionpicturebook #nonfictionillustration #foodhistory #womeninfood #womenchefs #picturebookbiography #picturebookillustration #instaillustration #instaillustrator #childrensbookart #childrensbookillustration #kidlitillustration #authorandillustrator #childrensbookstagram (at Dripping Springs, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwkjUiNHD14/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=n8eirgs51u8d

Posted @withregram • @shahzia.sikander Books now available @themorganlibrary #rootsandwings #extraordinaryrealities Repost from @mutually.inclusive • Roots and Wings: How Shahzia Sikander Became an Artist is a stunning picture book biography, following the life of world renowned Pakistani-American artist Shahzia Sikander, written by Shahzia Sikander and Amy Novesky. Young readers learn about Sikander’s childhood growing up in a multigenerational, multicultural home in Lahore, Pakistan and how she passes her time skateboarding, swimming, and flying her kite. They follow along as she studies miniature paintings in art school, and finds a new home in America. Roots and Wings is an inspirational story of an artist who followed her passion, and found success doing what she loves. The illustrations by Hanna Barczyk are breathtaking. The color work is absolute perfection! Just look at these pages! I have a full review on my blog (link in bio) so be sure to check it out for more detail. Thank you to Abrams Books For Young Readers for providing me with a review copy of this lovely book! Today is #kidlitpostcard day and I have a question for you… What would you want to know about my work? For example, I could tell you that I LOVE adding tiny meaningful details to my illustrations. This is a fragment from my last picture book: DRESSING UP THE STARS, The Story of Movie Costume Designer Edith Head (written by #JeanneWalkerHarvey and published by @simonkids). Once, when Edith was starting out in Hollywood, her boss asked her to organize thousands and thousands of buttons. While this anecdote didn’t make it into the book, I drew this jar of buttons as a little wink to what was to come. Editors & art directors, I’m looking for new projects that ask readers to slow down, pour over details and soak up the mood of the story. ❤️ Agents, write me if you want us to work together! I’m looking for a new agent and excited to find just the right partnership. I've finished up the last of my picture book stack with these two gems. A Song of Frutas by Margarita Engle, illustrated by Sara Palacios, is a precious story about a girl who visits her Abuelo in Cuba and helps him sell fruit. It mixes Spanish and English together comfortably to tell a touching and poetic story, especially since we learn the girl can't see her Abuelo often because of travel restrictions to Cuba. The art is especially gorgeous here too. Definitely recommended! Sharice's Big Voice: A Native Kid Becomes a Congresswoman by Sharice Davids, Nancy K. Mays, illustrated by Joshua Mangeshig Pawis-Steckley, is a delightfully told picture book autobiography of congresswoman Sharice Davids. She tells of her childhood, how much she loves to talk, her passion for martial arts, her family background, and more, and she makes herself completely relatable to any kids reading along, especially as she breaks barriers as an Indigenous woman and lesbian. The art is super cute and works well with the story. I would definitely recommend this one too! #reading #books #bookrecommendations #bookreview #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #booksofinsta #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookbiography #kidlit #childrensbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CXzH6_srOEv/?utm_medium=tumblr

On Being Less
A lot of people spend a lot of time trying to make other people feel like less and it becomes such a big deal that we start to believe it. They put us in boxes according to our race, class, religion (or non religion), abilities, physicality, sexuality, gender. And they use those boxes to trap us. To make us feel less than…
Less than good
Less than perfect
Less than human.
