Chef and food writer Rajyasree Sen looks into the histories of some of these famous sweet recipes and speculates about the ancestry of others in her book The Sweet Kitchen: Tales and Recipes of India's Favourite Desserts. The book is a fascinating peek at the desserts we have consumed for numerous Diwali, Christmas, Eid, and Navroz celebrations by bringing together tales, historical documents, and recipes. The book highlights previously unnoticed details of Indian food, particularly desserts. An area's past, geography, and politics have geography, and politics of a place have all influenced its cuisine. The Sweet Kitchen does that very well. You can anticipate learning what links the Portuguese and chenna, Sandesh and the Bengal Renaissance, etc. @alephbookco @bookreviewscafe @brown_sahiba #books #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #food #booksaboutfood #bookreview #bookreviewer #bookreader #bookrecommendations #bookrecommendation #booklover #bookreviewer #bookreviewers #bookreviewing #alephbookcompany #storizenmagazine https://www.instagram.com/p/CqqCegdPK1e/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Review: Batter Royale by Leisl Adams
Publisher’s Summary: In Leisl Adams’s debut graphic novel, Batter Royale, an aspiring amateur baker enters the toughest, ugliest, most fearsome fight she’ll ever experience: a baking reality show.
When seventeen-year-old small-town waitress Rose impresses a famous food critic, she and her best friend, Fred, find themselves thrust into the tough world of competitive baking. The contest is an intense ten days of bizarre challenges, and the competition is cutthroat. Some competitors are willing to lie, cheat, and sabotage their way to the top. Rose may be in over her head, but she is determined to show that she can become a top chef. Batter Royale is a fish-out-of-water style romantic comedy about climbing out of the circumstances you’re in and making your dreams come true.
My Thoughts: Even before reading, I could see Battle Royale was going to be a treat. The jacket design by Andrea Miller was lovely and the endpapers are pink and cute with strawberries floating here and there. The dedication page even has a smattering of sweet looking little macarons. It’s really not advisable to read this while hungry, but if you do, you’ll be wanting something to munch on pretty quickly.
There aren’t a lot of huge surprises in the story if you read the summary, but sometimes I like a book that I can just read without having to worry about unexpected twists. There are some shenanigans during the contest, but it never really goes into nail biting territory. I appreciated that the characters had some high stakes things happening, but the book wasn’t stressful to read. It was mostly like a cozy evening watching a baking competition on tv. Of course you might be cheering on a contestant or two and having hopes or small disappointments, but mostly, it’s just fun to watch.
There is a question about whether or not the main characters are interested in each other so there’s a little romantic tension, but again, not super stressful.
There are recipes between quite a few of the scenes. I hadn’t anticipated them, but after reading, I knew I would have to try something. I gave the blueberry scones a shot. They had less sugar than I usually use so they definitely weren’t overly sweet which I appreciated. The texture was perfect and they made for a wonderful breakfast.
Recommendation: This is a fun and quick story that anyone could enjoy especially if they lean toward low-key romance and like the potential for yummy treats.

🇬🇧 “We never snacked like this and we never binged like this. We never had so many superfoods, or so many chips. We were never quite so confused about food, and what it actually is. This is a book about the good, the terrible and the avocado toast.” 🥑 . I’m reading The Way We Eat Now by Bee Wilson. Wilson is an acclaimed food writer, historian and author of five other books, and I’ll be reading all of them. I’ve just started reading this book and loving it already. It is well-written, highly informative and makes you think about your relationship with food. . 🍎 QUESTION: What kind of nonfiction books do you like reading? Any favourites? 🍏 . . 🍎SORU: Söz konusu kurgu dışı kitaplar olduğunda, hangi konu hakkında okumak hoşunuza gidiyor? Favori bir kitabınız var mı? 🍏 . . . . #beewilson #thewayweeatnow #nonfiction #nonfictionbooks #booksaboutfood #aboutfood #foodbook #healthbook #foodwriting #foodjournalist #eatinghabits #kitap #kurgudışı #okumahalleri #diversereads #readdiversebooks #yemekkültürü #yiyecek #kitapaşkı #kitapkurdu #lovereading #readtolearn #readtolive #foodismedicine #futureoffood #mustread #okumaklazım #booksandflowers #roses #plantmama (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByFo2DhJYMB/?igshid=1k98f0orygnrx

I went into Hungry not completely sure whether I would enjoy it or not. I love food but I wasn’t sure a memoir by Grace Dent, food critic would be compelling enough to interest me. How wrong I was. This is a wonderful memoir about Grace who grew up in Carlisle and always dreamed of big things.⁣ ⁣ As you might expect, food does play its part in the memoir - the title and Grace’s occupation may have given you a little hint there but I wasn’t prepared for the waves of nostalgia that would come over me for the staple foods of my own childhood - Findus Crispy Pancakes, Fray Bentos pies, cheese and pineapple on a cocktail stick…it was all here in glorious abundance. ⁣ ⁣ What moved me most though was the time that we spend with Grace’s family, especially her dad who in his later years suffers from dementia. At this point in her life, Grace’s career is really taking off and she spends most of her time in London however does move back and forth to help care for her father. It was the quiet moments, where she described his character as having a twinkle of the dad she remembers and loves that broke my heart the most. ⁣ ⁣ Grace is really an inspiration for any young woman who has a dream and is determined to make it happen. She is steely, independent works hard and eventually achieves everything she ever wished for. It was a pleasure to read about her life and her family and this book deserves every moment of praise that it’s already had. ⁣ ⁣ Five beautiful stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #bookstagrammer #gracedent #hungry #memoir #fivestarreads #fivestarreview #booksthatmovedme #bookreview #foodmemories #booksaboutfood #foodmemoirs ⁣ https://www.instagram.com/p/CUA4pUvgHc4/?utm_medium=tumblr

AD Now out from @abramsbooks Women on Food edited by Charlotte Druckman is a collection of essays from female chefs and food writers. . Women on Food unites the radical, diverging female voices of the industry in this urgent, moving, and often humorous collection of essays, interviews, questionnaires, illustrations, quotes, and ephemera.   Edited by Charlotte Druckman and featuring esteemed food journalists and thinkers, including Soleil Ho, Nigella Lawson, Diana Henry, Carla Hall, Samin Nosrat, Rachael Ray, and many others, this compilation illuminates the notable and varied women who make up the food world. Exploring issues from the #MeToo movement, gender bias in division of labor and the workplace, and the underrepresentation of women of color in leadership, to cultural trends including food and travel shows, the intersection of fashion and food, and the evolution of food writing in the last few decades, Women on Food brings together food’s most vital female voices. . A great book for anyone interested in cooking or the food industry. It's the kind of book you keep handy to pick up and read an essay here or there. And one full of strong and compelling voices. . . #AbramsDinnerParty #womenonfood #booksaboutfood #book #nonfiction #booksofinstagram #instabook #bookaddict #bookaholic #amreading #bookclub #bookstagram #abramsbooks #essays (at Riverbend, Montana) https://www.instagram.com/p/B43XCAVgQC6/?igshid=tg62xard94it

Giant turnips!! This week at the Read With River Book Club our theme is food, and I've got a few yummy favourites to share. But first and foremost, absolutely perfect for the season, is "Grandma Lena's Big Ol' Turnip" (2005) by Denia Lewis Hester, illustrated by Jackie Urbanovic. Technically a new take on a traditional cumulative tale, even after almost 15 years this book reads as fresh and modern, with none of the repetitive drone you sometimes see in cumulative stories. As Grandma Lena sets out to grow some spectacular root veggies and turn them into comfort food with the help of her extended family, Hester and Urbanovic's words and images give nothing but seasonal warmth and family togetherness in a beautiful read-aloud story with plenty of fun thrown in. 🍠🍠🍠 Play along with the book club this week by sharing your favourite food-themed books with the tag #ReadWithRiver_Food. “You are who you are, whether you like it or not, so why not like it?” ✨🍎✨🍎✨ Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen is a pretty and charming book about family, love, food and magic that touches on some pretty heavy topics throughout the story. Following the Waverley family, specifically Claire and Sydney, we learn about their gifts and watch as magic is presented in a beautifully mundane way. Claire’s gift is with plants and cooking, while Sydney’s is hairdressing, and Evanelle’s is gifting people with things they’ll need. We as readers follow along as Sydney leaves an abusive relationship and returns home with her daughter Bay, and watch as she and Claire repair their relationship, while also forming friendships with the people around them. This book was written in a way that the story and the characters were enchanting, and gripping. The characters were both imperfect but relatable, and I absolutely loved them. A beautiful, charming and magical book, I’d recommend this to anyone who wants a quick but lovely read. ✨🍎✨🍎✨ Garden Spells is book 17 for 2022. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #bookdragon #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2022 #auskiwibooksta #bookquote #gardenspells #sarahaddisonallen #waverleyfamily #booksaboutfood #booksaboutmagic https://www.instagram.com/p/CbFoicVLN6n/?utm_medium=tumblr

I forgot it's Shrove Tuesday. I'm the type of person who only has a Jif lemon in the cupboard on Jif lemon day! No pancake breakfast for me (unless I leave the house) 😅 Anyway, this Penguin Special is not about being rubbish at food shopping, it's about the issues facing Britain's food supplies during the war. First published in 1939, this is book number S32.
