I adore picture book biographies because they can be such an accessible, interesting window into history for kids. Today's biography comes from my own collection, and is a great example of that. With "The Extraordinary Music of Mr. Ives: The True Story of a Famous American Composer" (2012), author-illustrator Joanne Stanbridge goes beyond just examining the life of composer Charles Ives, looking at how we was affected by one of the great tragedies of his time, the sinking of the Lusitania, how it influenced his music, and the unusual manner in which his previously unpopular compositions came to be a part of the culture.
