So the new chapter just dropped and it’s finally revealed what drove Beel and Egyn apart

It’s over barbecue?!? Beel just loves barbecue so much ?!?? Which is adorable and pretty hilarious but also no wonder why he’s literally going to war for it, if his love for it split him and his brother apart then he’s more than obsessed with it

So they really do have Baal dinner parties on the regular. Yeah those are obviously parties out of hell, but I would not want to be around when they start fighting. They more than likely have Greek god tier squabbles and I would not want to get caught in the crossfire and turned into a bug or whatever, all because someone was served fish and their sister thought that was gross 💀

The beginning of the end of their sibling bond </3 (also thank you Kato for the crumb of Mephisto we got <3 love to see him being so fancy <3 and his dark suit is so dapper <3) But the way Egyn immediately thought of Iblis is so funny and cute. “OH a barbecue contest ?!??? My big sister would be SO good at that, she’s the King of Fire so I just know she would roast meat so well!!!”

I love to see Iblis being an overbearing big sister to Egyn. Also she’s so pretty <3 love the dress. But I get why this would upset Beel since her overprotective behavior makes it too easy for the Egyn to hide behind her. This seems to be a long point of contention between the two especially since Beel is much more assertive than Egyn. Plus while they’re both very childish even by Demon King standards (and tbh all of the Demon Kings are pretty childish), they get treated very differently by the siblings they’re closest to. It’s been shown in the past that Mephisto holds Amaimon accountable for his actions to the point of harshly abusing/punishing him. I imagine he has done similarly with Beel, even if perhaps not as often due to his soft spot for cuteness. So all that to say that maybe Beel has resentment and jealousy towards Egyn for his bond with Iblis?

Also damn :/ Egyn and Iblis were actually really really close… and he does care about all of his siblings. Iblis was probably the same too. Sucks that she’s dead bc it would have been nice to see more of their sibling relationship. Even if most demon emotions are either watered down or intense, so many of their bonds seem to be based in conditional “love”. It would be nice to see more of how they interact with each other

Overall good chapter, I love to see the family dynamics between the Baal. PLEASE Kato, let us see more human aspects of the demon kings !

It skips out a lot of important lore/character info, and doesn't really showcase each character properly since it tried very hard to focus on just 1 brother and failed. So the ganes/translations are 100% the way to go.

As someone who ships Turkfra because of how fascinating the history between France and the Ottoman Empire is (Franco-Ottoman alliance) I like to think that they would both really bond over each other’s rich poetry culture. no fr let’s talk about the tour bus situation I have SO many thoughts bc I am not built for that life idk how they do it!!!! first of all yes 100% self timer it’s set up on the back shelf of that big sofa thing I think but also like. humans are gross and that’s natural we all have to fart and some people are snorers (I would lose my mind tbh can’t stand the sound) and that one time they talked about literally having to ask to stop at a service station if you have to shit bc you can’t do it on the bus like. man wtf. and there’s ONE bathroom like having to wait for people to change? and brush their teeth? taking your skincare in there with no sink? waiting to shower in venues and only being able to do laundry out of there and living out of backpacks and suitcases when everything gets that kinda musty travel smell maybe im the weird one but i find travelling so exhausting and kinda icky after a while ignoring all the fun and whimsy of working with people like them on a tour like theirs it’s just a big nope from me

Has anyone reading this been on a tour bus for prolonged period of time? If so can you weigh in? Do you spend like 75% of your time holding in a fart? And/or desperately needing to poop? Do you get dressed horizontally in your bunk? Do you have to use bottled water to brush your teeth and wash your face? Do you really have to keep all of your stuff beneath the bus and the necessities are just kept at your feet in your bunk with you?

And ugh yeah the showering and getting dressed in weird damp public places. - neil: you’re on your own kid (the neil josten anthem, especially the bridge), getaway car (I SWEAR IM NOT TRYING TO BE FUNNY), snow on the beach (tbh i always see this as an andreil song, but it’s just like: neil had never expected to fall for andrew or even trust him in the beginning, so the fact that they’re even falling? fucking weird. also, the line, “you wanting me, tonight, feels impossible” like the idea of someone wanting to touch him without wanting to hurt him ahshajsgs)

- andrew: daylight (just listen), anti-hero (this could very well apply to all the foxes, but the line, “i wake up screaming from dreaming // one day i’ll watch as you’re leaving // cause you got tired of my scheming” seems to be his perspective on nearly all of his relationships), evermore (for me, this song is largely about depression and, tbh, i’ve been reading too many andrew character studies lately, and “that this pain would be for evermore” hurts SO bad when you’re thinking about him. then the song develops, and ends with, maybe this pain isn’t forever. im gonna write a fic on this i swear.)

Ancestry & Background

Zenobia’s a human, specifically a Palmyrene (yes I did have to look that up), but it seems the only thing FGO really knows or cares about her history is the siege and the sadomasochism, so we’re going to make her a little Stensian to help toughen her up. she’s under siege by romans, they’re under siege by vampires, it’s practically the same thing tbh. she gets +1 Strength and Charisma, as well as a Daunting presence for free proficiency in Intimidation. yes… that’s why she’s dressed like that. of course. she’s also Tough, so she gets a free +2 bonus HP per level!

you’re also a noble, so that’s some proficiency in history and persuasion! history’s always a freebie for servants, and good golly can you be persuasive! or maybe just distracting?

ability scores

your highest score is gonna be constitution, you got a guts, your whole schtick is how ya like not quittin, it just makes sense. after that is dexterity- you can wear heavy armor, but your whole thing is not doing that. also, even though you use a sword most of the time people might want a lil archery in their archer build. third up is strength, bc we need it for multiclassig and also bc you smack people around with a sword most of the time. your charisma is also pr good, bc again, distracting. that means your intelligence is a lil low, i know royals probably had tutors and all that, but it’s not needed for the build. that means we’re dumping wisdom! do I really need to explain why fighting people while chained up is an unwise decision? (also you straight up slept through a combat encounter? wild.)

class levels

1. Fighter 1: okay, we know zenny doesn’t use her heavy armor that often, but it’s still something she can do, so we need to start as a fighter to make it happen. speaking of stuff we can do, unarmed fighting! it’s a fighting style that’ll make your punches and kicks do up to a d8 of damage! you actually don’t use your sword all that often, it’s kind of weird…

you can also spend a bonus action to heal with a second wind once a short rest! healing helps you not die, and not dying helps you win a siege! basic maths.

you get proficiency with Strength and Constitution saves, plus Acrobatics and Insight to tell whether or not this weird princess idol can be trusted.

2. Barbarian 1: okay, enough of that nonsense, we need to get naked, now. thankfully, with Unarmored Defense you can do that without turning it into a death sentence by adding your constitution to your AC. furthermore, you can Rage once you’ve psyched yourself up enough to deal extra damage with strength-based attacks, have advantage on strength saves and checks, and you resist physical damage for up to a minute as long as you aren’t wearing heavy armor and keep fighting.

3. Fighter 2: okay, now that we’re nakie, let’s get back to getting those shoulder-mounted guns! at second level, a fighter can action surge for a second action in a single turn once a short rest! that’s like, twice as many attacks as before!

4. fighter 3: a level three you finally become a psi warrior, so now you can float up some crossbows to keep on hand! these shots are represented by psionic dice- you get two times your proficiency bonus in psi dice per day, and you can also recharge one die per short rest. you can use these in three ways- you can spend them on a protective field to further reduce damage, or you can float an object with telekinetic movement. for the latter, the first time is free, so just don’t let your crossbows fall and you’re good! mechanically it’s a lot less of a headache to just say they’re there, and add extra damage with psionic strikes, dealing a psionic die of damage to someone you’ve attacked this turn. it says this has to be immediately after you attack, but I’d let you walk away first, really get that “samurai slices up an enemy and sheathes her sword” vibe goin.

5. barbarian 2: at level two a barbarian can make reckless attacks, giving yourself advantage on all melee attacks for a round, at the cost of everyone else having advantage on attacks against you. thank goodness u also have danger sense, giving yourself advantage on dex saves against stuff you can see! wait, those two don’t cancel out at all! at least you have a ton of health!

6. barbarian 3: at level three you gain primal knowledge, making you proficient with perception! you gotta be able to see stuff to shoot it, after all. also you’re a zealot now.

thanks to your subclass, you have some divine fury you can toss on your attacks, dealing an extra bit of radiant damage on the first hit you land each turn. boom, laser crossbows.

you’re also a warrior of the gods, so you can be revived for free. we’ll get a guts later, but if you need a revive you need a revive.

7. barbarian 4: first asi! bump up your strength to punch stuff deader.

8. barbarian 5: at fifth level barbarians get an extra attack each action for up to four attacks in one turn with your action surge. some times you just gotta beat people into the ground, i get it.

you also have fast movement, increasing your speed by 10’ while not wearing heavy armor. yeah your np looks cool, but you’d probably have a much harder time doing spinkicks while wearing it.

9. barbarian 6; sixth level zealots have a fanatical foucus that lets you reroll failed saves while raging once per rage. roman emperors are known for trying wisdom save bullshit, so don’t let them get all buddy-buddy with you.

10. barbarian 7: seventh level barbarians have a regal/ feral instinct for danger, giving you advantage on initiative rolls, plus you can ignore being surprised by going full queen mode turn one. you got ambushed by like 40 guys that one time and still got to go first, remember?

11. barbarian 8: another asi, so bump up your strength again to hit more gooder.

12. barbarian 9: at level nine you have some brutal criticals, adding another die of damage to your critical hits! so now on a critical punch you can get 3d8+7 bludgeoning + 2d6+4 radiant + 2d6 force damage in one critical combo, between your fist, your laser crossbow, and your regular one. turns out shoving like three different attacks into one blow is good for damage!

13. barbarian 10: now that we have your combo game down pat, let’s get a skill- with fanatical focus you finally have yourself a charisma, using your bonus action to give up to ten other creatures advantage on all attacks and save for a round once a day. the cooldown’s rough but with the right army behind you, you can end a day’s combat right then and there.

you also get more primal knowledge for some athletics proficiency. obviously  zenny’s proud of her abs, just look at her outfits!

14. barbarian 11: eleventh level barbers get their first guts in relentless rage- if you’d drop to 0 hp while raging, you can make a constitution save to try and stay up instead. the first time’s a dc 10, and then it goes up by five every time after until you finish a short rest. it’s not quite siege material, but it’ll definitely help in a battle!

15. barbarian 12: another asi means another chance to- surprise tough feat! that’s right, the thing from the start of the build wasn’t a feat! it was just something stensians can do! with the tough feat added that’s another +2 hp each level, and it’s retroactive, so you get 30 bonus HP right now!!!!

16. barbarian 13: this level’s easy, just another bit of brutal critical-ing for a second extra die.

17. barbarian 14: as a fourteenth level zealot you can now siege like nobody’s ever sieged before, since you can rage beyond death! with this, dropping to 0 hp won’t knock you out while you’re raging. you still have to make death saves like usual, but that won’t take effect until you finish raging- and even then, getting any kind of heal will keep you alive!

of course you still need to stay raging, so this won’t be much good after a fight.

18. barbarian 15: just kidding! with persistent rage you can keep your rage going right up to the minute mark through sheer force of will! now you’ve five minutes a day where you literally cannot die unless you will it.

19. barbarian 16: you get one last asi, and we’re putting it in charisma. tbh it’s been kind of low this whole build, but we didn’t really have a chance to punch it up until now since we had to get your other stuff.

20. barbarian 17: another brutal critical die! it’s a bit anti-climactic, but you also get a sixth rage each day, that’s cool!

Pros & Cons

Pros:

you basically cannot die. you’ve got just shy of 300 HP, rage resistances, six minutes of “I literally cannot die” time, and you’ve got a proficiency on your save to avoid death a couple times even before that. you are 100% equipped to deal with a siege, no bones about it.

you only attack a few times a turn, but you’re built to deal big damage in single attacks, really banking on that increased chance to crit from reckless attacks. barbarians don’t usually put big damage numbers on the board, but you can defy stereotypes.

while you’re definitely not built for it, you can make ranged attacks if you need to. you know how so many of our builds list flying as a big pro? its because people don’t do this.

Cons:

your AC is bad even before we start giving people free advantage, and your rage doesn’t cover anything other than physical damage, so you could burn through that health faster than you’d like in magic-heavy encounters.

you’re also bad with your soft stats, which is mostly just awkward but it does also hamper your damage from psionic crossbow.

you don’t have much to do aside from hit stuff in a fight. don’t get me wrong hitting stuff is like 90% of a fight, but other builds have more options on how to deliver it. your two extra features are “everyone else hits stuff better”, and “I hit stuff a little bit more this turn”. not exactly Zhuge Liang here.

Oh I have. So many thoughts. You asking abt it even made me get up off my ass and draw again. Putting everything under the cut to avoid having a mile long post.

When I first had the idea I really struggled on who was a weapon/meister but after deciding on wanting to pair ruikasa/emunene up I was like tsukasa and emu need to be the meisters bc 1) it fits with them being the founding duo of wxs 2) I really wanted nene to be a gun 3) fitting tsukasa’s goals into the SE universe worked better if he was a meister. I elected to make rui a whip first and then I realized I could fit a bloodborne reference in there and reference becoming potatoes with the cane. I’m not entirely satisfied w the first pass at designs for the universe (not super close to the SE aesthetic, I cannot draw guns, I’m not very good at character design, etc) but i kind of tried to pull inspiration from:

- tsukasa and emu’s happy Phoenix costumes (split colors on tsukasa’s coat, tsukasa’s boots, the corset/bell sleeves/little cape thingie for emu)

- for tsukasa specifically: piano (b&w colors and stupid long coat tails), his second wxs costume

- emu: bc I drew her last and it was getting late I did less searching and more winging it but I did try to combine the style of her wxs costumes (shoes, dress, striped socks) & general darker Lolita (for lack of a better word) fashion.

- nene: her gaming event card (weird energy ball device thing? Which I would imagine functions similar to dtk’s shooting soul wave lengths thru the thompsons)

- rui: his ugly ass coat (fond) he wears as his first wxs costume. Also becoming potatoes cane handle thing. Him being a trick weapon (bloodborne term, essentially a weapon that can switch between two forms) also kind of lines up w him being a tech genius.

Ok done talking abt the designs onto the in universe stuff

- not basing any au story off the soul eater plot bc it didn’t work out very well (too many pjsk characters) (going with the main story wxs plot w a soul eater spin. Kinda. Gonna have to think abt that a bit.) but if I did mafuyu > crona, miku & the kagamines > dtk and the thompsons. Would that make cfm lord death. Emu would fill a similar role to maka with mafuyu in that situation but in general (besides the surface level similarities btwn tsukasa and black star) nene is too different from soul, emu is way too different from maka, and rui is literally NOTHING like tsubaki so I can’t justify just swapping out emunene/tsukasa with soul&maka/black star&tsubaki. No equivalent to that fucking cat in this universe. & the pjsk characters get to wear clothes when they’re in the weird place weapons’s bodies go when they’re transformed.

- idk maybe the regular soul eater plot is happening/will happen/has happened but this is the Japan branch (oceania branch in canon?).

- vocaloids are professors (not the kagamines. Forever babies.) but if there needs to be a lord death equivalent making that miku would be so funny. Also the normal vocaloid personalities and not the WXS ones for conveniences sake. Uhhh first thoughts for M/W would be meister miku, weapon meiko, meister kaito, luka can go either way tbh, kagamines are both weapons but are each other’s meister.

- similar to how rui did shows on his own for a really long time I think he was his own meister for a while (like Justin Law was). He doesn’t have many souls bc dwma in this universe at least pretends to give a fuck abt student safety so they don’t want to send him out alone on anything dangerous (despite his talent) and he can’t resonate soul wave lengths with most ppl bc they don’t get him. He ended up giving up on finding a meister when he was younger bc of this & just worked really hard on his own. He experiences a similar isolation from his peers that dtk did (ppl find him intimidating/envy at his skill/etc).

- equivalent of him transferring in to kamikou (? Spelling) second year is the kamishiros spending ~10 years in America. He’s still childhood friends w nene he just moved away after they drifted apart and then came back. Mizuki probably did something similar just 2 keep the mizuki & rui connection still there.

- tsukasa’s SE universe goal is to be the best meister - he wants to protect & help people (inspired by saki. I’ll get to that) but the equivalent of tsukasa forgetting he wanted to make ppl smile & believing he just wanted fame would be tsukasa believing he wants to be the best meister for fame/power.

- saki’s chronic illness is a result of black blood due to an incident w a kishin egg monster when she was younger. I think she would be a weapon but along with the canon typical chronic illness symptoms (not erasing those) she struggles for a long time w controlling her ability to change in and out of weapon form. Tsukasa & her *could* have been a m/w pair & have compatible soul wave lengths but 1) he’s overprotective and I think he realized he would not be able to fight without being too scared of getting her hurt 2) saki’s illness means she can’t really enroll in the dwma (yet. She gets there eventually.)

- nene was in the not classes before the plot picks up bc she didn’t think she had what it took to be a weapon. In universe equivalent to her forgetting her lines would maybe be freezing when she was supposed to transform during an important test when she was younger? Not baby age like in canon (bc I know the DWMA likes child soldiers but 7ish is a bit much even for them) but old enough to be taking classes & old enough to be put into not classes as a result. Im not reading SE NOT! to understand how those classes work though so thank god she gets out of those classes

- nene *is* a really powerful weapon she just lacks the confidence and struggles to resonate with people (& unlike rui she can’t wield herself)

- on that note emu can resonate with just about anyone but she hasn’t found anyone that felt right yet, and Tsukasa needs someone who can keep up w the intensity of his soul wave length and hasn’t found anyone who can do that yet.

- ^ similar to tsukasa being a piano prodigy or whatever in canon tsukasa *is* a really good meister, he just needs a really good weapon. Bc his peers would need more training to get to that level

- I toyed with making emu dtk adjacent (daughter of death) (bc PXL -> DWMA) but that would be too complicated with her brothers/dad/grandpa so I disregarded it. Maybe I’ll come back to it. I think it would make more sense for emu to come from a long line of really talented meisters so she grew up training for the job and running around the dwma.

- emu approaches tsukasa and is like we should work together!!! We’ll do better on missions and be able to take down harder kishin & maybe witches!! & he’s like sure why not every star needs a sidekick (obnoxious laugh) even though emu could kick his ass without breaking a sweat (in line with canon). & like the angel she is emu is like (ignores his pre main story dickheadedness) wonderhoy!! (Deathhoy?) okie dokie we need to find weapon partners then!! (bodily drags him to class)

- tsukasa sees rui training on his own and is like wow he’s really talented! Fitting for a future star like me! & approaches him to ask if they can pair up. Rui is like on the condition that you can find my friend a partner in your class (wants nene out of the not classes bc he thinks she’s far beyond that skill level). Emu jumps on the idea and is introduced to nene who is placed in the higher level courses to accommodate this partnership. Idc if that can’t happen in SE canon I think the Otoris have a lot of sway and any potential issues w nene being less powerful (not the case but it’s the assumption made abt not students) can be made up by emu’s skill.

- emu is instantly very taken with nene and they resonate well. I know what u are dot jpg. Rui & tsukasa can resonate but struggle to unlock their full potential (similar to soul and maka struggling with using the witch hunter form) bc tsukasa needs to realize what his real motivations are.

- tsukasa assumes nene has a low skill level at first (similar to his issues w nenerobo. God I wish I could think of a way to fit nenerobo in this au. sorry nenerobo) but is proven wrong when emu wields her.

- equivalent to the climax of the wxs main story in this is nene freezing again during an important mission and the group losing an important target -> tsukasa gets mad and yells at her -> rui fights w tsukasa over this and tells him that he’ll never be a good meister if he cares more about fame and power than people.

- tsukasa chats w the death scythe kaito & realizes the Error Of His Ways -> emu is considering dropping out bc she feels that she fucked up all of their futures as weapons/meisters by putting this into motion but tsukasa has the heart to heart with emu and they agree to continue being a team -> emu and nene partner back up -> they approach rui who has gone back to working solo and he refuses to partner back up w tsukasa

- idk what a good equivalent to the lonely alchemist show would be. Tsukasa and rui need to resonate & work together to help emunene because they’re in peril or something? & rui through the resonance realizes that tsukasa is genuine? Some sort of hand wavey plot device is used to resolve everything.

- I think that emu & rui and nene & tsukasa are also able to resonate and they do occasionally switch it up just for funsies. Emu and rui bc they just get along very well and nene & tsukasa argue with each other but can still function as a team.

- I don’t think that rui & nene can resonate because. Put down the pitchforks please. *Because* similar to their dynamic in pjsk despite their bond and their care for each other there’s a lot of baggage that needs to be worked through. Too many things left unsaid. Etc. they could probably achieve resonance later on but there’s not really a need to given that they’re both weapons and both have meisters.

- Rui thinks it’s a great training exercise to fight tsukasa “how do you expect to get better if you don’t try fighting against a weapon without a weapon… I’m just trying to help you… (fake crying)” “I’m already good at fighting without a weapon!! This is never going to be relevant knowledge anyways!!! You just want to fight me because you think it’s fun!!!!!!” “(switching manipulation tactics) Someone who wants to be a star would want to be prepared for any situation no matter how small the chance is of it happening” “hm…that’s true… ok let’s do it!!”

- cut to them in the nurses office. This is a weekly occurrence.

- emu also thinks it’s good practice to use tsukasa as moving target practice but this is less dangerous and more just continuing tsukasa’s never ending torment (he is a willing participant in said torment mind you)

- like in canon emu pulls nene out of her shell and hypes her up constantly which is huge in getting nene to have more confidence in herself and her abilities. It’s also incredibly helpful to have a meister who will never judge her for freezing and will always meet her halfway.

- also like in canon nene is very helpful with reeling emu in. She’s a very helpful voice of reason/impulse control but one that understands that even if emu’s ideas are unconventional they still have merit (even if they need to be refined a little)

- similar to the soul eater main cast having the self preservation skills of very small stupid suicidal animals hell bent on getting themselves injured or killed (Liz excluded), emu and Tsukasa are very prone to charging in to a situation w/out thinking. Tsukasa is more reasonable but unfortunately his weapon parter is not and rui usually cajoles tsukasa into doing stupid shit. Nene is suffering.

ahhhh this is so kind, thank you so much ;u; i like it too! i moved recently and at my new parish there's an older woman with a short slicked-back undercut and we're the only two women wearing suits rather than dresses/skirts or less formal wear and it's. idk, it's good, to see someone else. i spent a while wearing only skirts and dresses to Mass; this started partly just bc it's less hot lol--when you're walking in Florida summers there are only so many options that are both modest and practical--but since i moved away from Florida it's been genuinely so healing for me to start wearing suits tbh. i hadn't even realized how much i was internalizing a specific ideal of how "traditionally" feminine i had to be before i could be with God until i started pushing against it. so many Catholic spaces enforce (usually fairly anachronistic, lol--very "50s American calling itself Biblical") gender roles--either explicitly or implicitly--and this is more true the more traditional you are, which, i am... traditional enough to feel pretty alone among entirely secular/liberal/atheist surroundings but, well, also a butch lesbian, such that Catholic communities & even Catholic women's communities often leave me feeling pretty similarly. being religious + queer, and especially being side b, is really lonely sometimes, but it's also something i wouldn't trade for the world, you know? it's who i am & it's taught me so much & i am so confident that this is God's plan for me and will teach me more as i keep going, that this is what He wants. and that's what matters. i'm trying to be more unapologetically Catholic in secular/queer spaces & more unapologetically queer in Catholic spaces and both of these things are incredibly, incredibly hard, but they're also both. important and part of who i am. so .. yeah. yeah! & ultimately it is never Catholicism or Jesus that make me feel this way, Catholicism has been nothing but a balm to my soul & a comfort in hard times, i love Adoration i love Mass i love the Eucharist i love Confession. it's just, well, humans are fallen, i'm fallen, and all of that gets messy sometimes. sorry for the long response to a four-word ask but. yeah. i am Catholic i am a butch lesbian & despite what ppl may say these things do not contradict! and maybe i can be living proof of that for someone else the way so many ppl have been proof of that for me

Yesterday was a kinda rough day.

I had to go into school early. My college mentor group has 6 instead of 5, because our class has an extra person in it (this is bc an e22 had to repeat first year- repeating years is normal/not weird in med school btw, there is so much that happens in life and I really appreciate this person’s perspective and life experiences, and repeating is NOT a judgment on their intelligence or ability to become a good doc… I think their personal life just got really intense tbh). I hate “professional” dress because of how I look and feel in those kinds of clothes, strike 1.

Anyway, after that I had to be in class because we had our anti-weight bias content, which devolved a little. I would say most people want to be inclusive and avoid stigma and understand that even IF fatness was always “unhealthy,” treating individual patients with that bias leads to worse health outcomes. But some people just cannot see past the idea that some fat/adipose tissue is metabolically active and that can lead to increased inflammation.

Registered dietician who literally teaches a graduate level 16 week course in fat bias: “The research suggests that bringing up patient’s weight as a problem to address leads to worse health outcomes in these people.”

Classmates: “but isn’t our job to tell them that being fat is bad?”

RD: “you’re assuming they don’t ‘know’ that weight is associated with health risk. They know.”

Classmate: “how can they know if we don’t tell them?” (Note: really sassy and rude tone)

Oh IDK, maybe we know because we are told over and over and over again by every person who is even marginally thinner than we are?? No, a fat person doesn’t need to know the “chronic inflammatory disease process” of “excess adiposity” to understand that fat may, in some situations, contribute to development of metabolic diseases. Trust me, we know. I knew before I was fat, long before I even started med school, and it was one part that fueled my ED.

And I ended up being very vulnerable because I was just too angry… and told the entire class that I had atypical anorexia for 12 years (to give context about my opinion). My opinion being: weight is NOT within a patient’s direct control. Gain or lose or even just being weight stable. There are too many factors outside of our control that contribute (like thyroid function, but that’s just one of them). “Eat less and move more” doesn’t always work for fat folk. I ate way less than you all and moved way more and was so sick I couldn’t even go to class, and yet I still wasn’t thin. People are not fat for lack of education. They are not fat for lack of trying. So don’t focus on the weight. Focus on what is directly in their control. How are you moving? How are you eating? Do you have safe spaces to move your body? Do you have access to vegetables? What limits you? Become solutions-focused for those things they CAN control and let them know that just engaging in what they can do is helpful.

Anyway I only dissociated a little bit.
