yellow: What is something your OC wants but knows they can never have? How does it feel to never get this specific desire?

damian wishes so much that he could tell everyone around him that he's a demon hunter. he wants to share this cool, dark secret so that people will know just how cool he is. unfortunately, it's also a (somewhat) closely kept family secret, and it would also be kind of a dumb idea for everyone to know he was a demon hunter, otherwise demons would Come For Him, and he can't compromise his mission like that!

(the demon crew all 100% know his "occupation". he is not very good at hiding it. he's also not all that good of a demon hunter, his current killcount is at 0. but shhh. he has to hide his identity!!)

blue: How would your OC spend a single day of uninterrupted peace? Where would they go or who would they be with?

oh this one is fun... ves actually had to contend with this question a lot when he first "retired", because he didn't know how to HANDLE a full day of uninterrupted peace. his previous life of crime had this constant underlying sense of danger, urgency- so that even in the moments he was supposedly safe, he still felt that lingering at the back of his mind. he started picking up carpentry and odd jobs because he was so completely restless and at a loss for what to do with himself- eventually he figured out he liked it, that keeping his hands moving until he was exhausted gave him somewhere to channel all that restless energy.

as a result, though, he has a tendency to never slow down, to always be doing something. he's ostensibly retired, but between half-finished projects and repairs and odd jobs around the neighborhood, he's always working on something. and once he does take a day off, it tends to be full to the brim with people- giorno stopping by with coffee to chat, one of his neighbors dropping in with some extra tomatoes from their garden, sam and ori showing up to "have a few beers and play cards" (drink, get rowdy, fall into bed with him.) he kind of likes it that way, though!

he kind of has to be wrangled into having a true, real, genuine day of peace, but sam and ori sometimes manage. usually by keeping him in bed on some rainy day where his joints are achy and he's already a little tired and he's a little more willing to simply... laze around; draped over each other, a movie in the background, leafing through a paperback or dozing off intermittently. it's rare, but it's definitely worth it <3

Do you think (I hope this doesn't sound as if I hate the batkids but im just genuinely curious), if the bat kids (Jason, Tim, Damian, Steph, etc) came earlier, like Robin Dick and Batman when they have still a rather good(?) relationship and before Dick leaving and before canon time of Bruce meeting Jason) met Bruce, will he take them in and/or adopt them?

Tbf, Dami is biological son so Bruce might take him in either way, but what do you think?

No it doesn't sound like that at all! :)

Honestly I don't think it would've mattered if any of the robins had met Dick and Bruce when they had a good relationship. First of all, Bruce only took in Jason because he missed Dick and wanted a Robin. So if Dick was still with Bruce, Bruce would feel no desire or thought to take in anyone. Furthermore, Jason isn't the first troubled talented kid that Bruce has met over the years. Bruce and Dick have been solving cases and helping such kids for years so Bruce taking in Jason during Dick's absence was more of a "right place at the right time" sort of thing.

For similar reasons, that's also why he wouldn't have taken in Tim. Bruce took in Tim under Alfred and Dick's encouraging and also because Tim made a good point about Batman needing a Robin. B was literally killing himself through self-destructive techniques because Jason died and grief does that to people. He lost a robin. If Dick had been the one that died during his Robin years, then Tim might have ended up Robin but it's debatable because he would've been younger than 13 at the time. But if he waited until he was old enough, then Bruce would've killed himself in grief by then. However since Dick is still alive, healthy, and on great terms, Tim wouldn't have entered the picture. Although, if he worked up the nerve to reach out to Dick sooner, Dick would've had a new baby brother a lot earlier.

Stephanie only became Robin because Bruce was trying to manipulate Tim to come back. He knew that Tim would hate him if he endangered his loved ones so by making Stephanie robin, Tim would have to return because he knows the dangers of being Robin. So no Tim, no Stephanie.

Damian. Damian would become Robin and that's canon! THERE'S ACTUALLY A SAME AGE DICK AND DAMIAN STORY!!!!

In this story, Talia suddenly drops off Damian with Bruce and he finds out that his father has another kid-Dick. It's a heart warming story of them getting to know each other with Raven, Gar, and Maxine.

When the tracker doesn't work he gets really worried so he calls Bruce about it. And Bruce is just like, "Whatever, it'll be fine, Dick. He was raised by assassins, he can take care of himself. I need to go."

But Dick is in full Big Brother Mode. So what does he do? He spies on Damian through CCTV cameras and then gets even more worried that Damian might be kidnapped or involved in something dangerous because oh my god there's random people whose identification don't come up with Damian.

So Dick then rushes out of the manor and goes on a road trip, tracking him down. Damian's friends are surprised and creeped out to see a guy and when Damian looks, he is not happy. Damian does not like Dick. But Dick in any universe will always be a responsible older brother.

Teen Titans: Robin Issue #1

At this point Dick is fed up.

So they have a bunch of mini-competitions from archery to hacking to parkour to fighting to etc and Damian's getting more and more frustrated that he keeps tying while Dick is in it for a good time. I think Dick's genuinely happy about this because he's viewing it as a bonding experience but everything comes to head when Damian reaches his limit

Things don't get better but the event progresses because Slade's wife Adeline (to whom he's still married to) is working with an evil organisation that collects metas and non-humans is searching for Gar so they need to do something fast. There are also flashbacks from Damian's side of him being jealous that Bruce trusts Dick so much and how perfect he is which don't help. It makes Damian really furious that Dick doesn't even realize how Bruce trusts him and instead acts like he's best friends with Damian which just serves to tick him off more.

Dick and Damian end up working together, find out about Kori, escape Slade, and all's great in the end. They become the brothers they were always meant to be.

And then it becomes the real formation of the teen titans. Dick and Damian - brothers for life.

I wish there was an entire series on this! I want to see the continuation.

Putting aside the logistics of whether they would meet or not, if Dick had met any of the robins at any age, he would've adored the heck out of them. I think they all would've ended up in Damian's position but they would definitely warm up to him by the end because it's impossible not to love Dick, especially if he loves you.

There's also a canon comic moment where Robin! Tim meets Robin! Dick, and they get along far better than Damian and Dick here but still the same emotions run in the scenes.

The way Tim and Damian feel the same way - it's two different comics, but they both feel stressed by Dick for the same reasons.

They feel like the need to live up to Dick but Dick doesn't feel that they have anything to prove because he just genuinely likes them for who they are. This feeling is a source of friction on the Robins' side, but it's also important they have this because you can't really know someone if you don't overcome your differences. The fact that they have to learn about each other brings out both of their greatest strengths.

Like in the Robin comic, Tim suspects something is off and Dick goes along with it. Tim's right and in the end they catch the bad guy and figure out the escape plan.

Overall, I'd say that Bruce wouldn't take any of the Robin in during Dick's younger days. But if he did, Dick and the Robins would become the best of brothers.

Oh but you know what'd be exciting? Dick and Stephanie's same age Robin au! Tim, Damian, and Jason's would all be sort of the same. They would struggle with Dick's standing but love him possessively in the end. But I have no idea how Stephanie and Dick would go. Of course they would love each other but same age brother and sister?! I WANT THAT SO BAD!!! Their dynamic would be crazy!! The amount of grey hairs Bruce would have? The ultimate chaos duo, they'd feed into each others' energies! Gotham would be a goner.

Rambling about Damian in Batman #138

just lots of speculating about writing choices lol

I had a lot of peeves in the writing for Damian this issue, and it mainly stems from Zdarsky's impression of Damian still being an entitled brat, which tbf is how a large chunk of comic readers still see him as :/

Objectively, he uses this to his advantage to go from Damian going on about his place as Bruce's REAL confidant/son

to being this kid that had placed all his loyalty in Bruce only to be abandoned :(

This writing of an entitled Damian is what makes him being vulnerable in the end hit SO much harder. Not to say even if he was written in character it wouldn’t hit the same, but to those who’s only familiar with him being the “arrogant Robin” it's an impactful character moment like, OH through all that brattiness he's really just a kid huh :(

IDK kudos to Zdarsky for making him look more sympathetic I guess?? BUT THIS KIND OF CHARACTER MOMENT FOR DAMIAN HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE IN RED ROBIN #14 WHERE IT MADE MORE SENSE AT THE TIME (to be EXTRA fair, that exact issue is how I got into Damian so if this is another similar gateway for comic readers in giving Damian a chance THEN OKAY...I CAN SEE IT…)

I'm trying really hard to figure out if this is just a case of a writer using a character as a personal mouthpiece because the comfort Tim offers Damian after is such a contrast LOL Zdarsky seems to know the major events of Damian "fighting" Bruce/giving up Robin and then the latest Batman VS Robin book, which I guess equals to "all they do is fight!!" BASICALLY this just feels like a funny observation on Zdarsky's part with his limited knowledge on Damian and Bruce's relationship :/ this may also be me trying not to hate Tim for this because reading him in comics is one of the only places I can refresh my love for himsdfgh

Hey I absolute love your baby damian au and all the Talia Bruce custody shenanigan potential so thank you for introducing that into the world.

I have a niche question tho. Cause in that au, Tim side loses all plot relevance and doesn’t become Robin. And it made me think. What happens to a Tim that doesn’t become Robin? Or actually, what happens to Jack and Janet Drake???

My opinion is that they probs both die in Haiti because the only reason Jack survived was because Batman comes to save them and I don’t think Batman would’ve gone to rescue the Drakes without Tim looking sad at him in the cave. Like not in a callous way but like. They’re not in Gotham. And in the comic itself Bruce is already preoccupied with the money spider stuff. (So much so that he fully like interrupts mid-sentence his comforting of Tim to go hacker fight ms lol). And then I assume Tim gets to live out his sad boy arc without bats or even a fake uncle to adopt him.

But like what do you think would happen? I’m trying to collect the opinions of fandom creators who have actually read comics but no worries if this is a question you have no interest in. Tbf it’s got very little relevance to the au anymore.

Ive actually talked about this before and see I do actually disagree on the jack dying bc while I know obviously tim wouldn't be there to make Bruce focus on it I still think he'd go save them since Bruce has solved crimes outside of Gotham before and the drakes are famous gothamites so I can still see Bruce being compelled to go and save them - so yeah I do think Jack would still survive and go into a coma and tim probably wouldn't be effected much - jack would wake up 6 months later remarry and life would go on as normal - jack wouldn't even die later on consider he was only targeted bc he was related to Robin and if tims not Robin he's fine - so yeah then I can see one of two things happening either tim still trys to become a hero later on (17 to 19ish) but he doesn't have that bat training so he's more in the way then anything or he just has a normal life

Tbf I don’t think a single character is treated well by the fandom lol. Nuance dies in the Batman fandom 😂

This is so real!!!! It's actually a bit of a nightmare to have read literally any comics and also look for good fic, it's why it takes me so long to get to some of these fic requests. But I've been in fandom a very long time (well, for the average Tumblr user; I first read fic in 2008 or so), and I've seen a lot of characters get treated this way. I saw this problem in HP and in SPN and in BTVS and marvel where certain characters got flattened or completely mischaracterized by the fandom at large. The problem with batfam is that due to a combination of factors this happened to literally all of the characters. An average batfam fic has nothing to do with the actual DC comics characters and it's fucking bizarre, actually.

WFA I think made it worse somehow. For me, WFA was a gateway into the comics; I read it, got a good grasp on the basic players, read some fic, and then dove into whatever comics I could get my hands on. But for other people it seems as though the only material that exists is WFA and fanfic. A lot of really prominent writers literally just plain admit to not having read a comic. Now, some of those have read enough fic by competent authors that their characterization is still on point; others, tho, are uh... Very involved in the fanon.

Basically, it's not weird that some characters are completely flanderized or flattened by fandom. It's just bizarre that this happened to every single batfam character. Like:

Bruce is either a good guy trying his best or literally evil

Dick is a good older brother with a kind heart and a thick ass and that's it. Sometimes the writers have vaguely heard about Nightwing 93 but only sometimes

Jason has pit madness and is nigh on abusive to Tim or is babygirl who loves Jane Austen, no in between

Tim is woobified and is defined entirely by being a genius who drinks too much coffee

Steph is waffles girl

Damian is the literal devil and antagonistic towards everyone except Bruce and Dick and also nobody in any fandom can write children, fyi, y'all need to stick to writing teenagers and up bc y'all either extremely underestimate or overestimate what children can do

Cass is a sweetheart and everyone's favorite and that's literally it

Babs is a super genius but not as smart as Tim of course. The one and only good thing about fanon is that she's nearly always Oracle

Duke is not there

Kate is not there

Harper is definitely not there (although tbf she's in even less comics than Duke and I don't own any of her appearances)

And yeah this is the mess that the fandom has created. It does honestly get exhausting sometimes

Besides Anya would never be jealous of Damian because he did try to make her jealous of the attention he gets in his introductory chapter and the George chapter and she couldn't care less. She doesn't see it as a problem for the mission. In her eyes Melinda is her only rival with the opposing Plan C. Plus Endo stressed he would never do a love triangle for Damianya unlike TwiYor in the guidebook

TBF I never implied she would be a mini-fiona, I just said "she's genuinely in love with Damian" I never implied she would be like Fiona (hell in my idea if Damian got together with Anya she would be happy for them)

In the canon in my mind I ignore all the deaths and revivals and retcons and pretend that Jason was the only one to die because every time they kill another batfam member off only to revive them later, it loses its meaning in general, but especially because it's kinda like a slap in the face for Jason's arc every time it happens, as well as for why his relationship with Bruce became so strained. Bruce's grief from losing Jason is one of the most defining arcs of his character. Going from Professional but Warm to Cold and Distant and almost Brutal, being closer to the 'No killing' line than ever, only to be pulled back into the light and forced to open up again when Tim came around.

It goes unsaid that it's defining for Jason, Red Hood, ect. How his views on the afterlife would've changed, how his value of self was affected and relationships strained, how there's likely gaps in his memory.

I hate that every time they do a cheap kill for shock value it completely overshadows the trauma and affect on these characters that was caused by Jason's murder, that deserves to be explored, and that I personally want to see them actually, properly reconcile and heal from.

I would say Damian is the only other member to actually die but it was during his childhood with the League, and I doubt it happened only once. There was a headcanon somewhere about how he had brown eyes but they turned green because of the Pit and the family didn't realise Damian had ever died until they found old baby pictures of him and saw the colour change. I personally really like that idea too. So essentially they didn't know until much later.

Anyway, that's the Batfam storyline headcanon in my mind.

based sort of on this (link) wth babs telling cass it (her kill) is not her fault.

anyway because I love thinking about a ton of characters at once

wondering if any of the batfam members ever tell damian that his kills aren’t his fault? I can’t think of any who do and have a few hypotheses

damian has killed an objectively larger number of people than cass did at this point in her character development. The number is never made clear but we get the idea he had active missions (Whether they were stealing-stuff missions like in R:SoB or assassination missions like in flashbacks in B&R 2011 the proportion isn’t clear), whereas cass left after her first active mission.

cass expresses guilt MUCH more readily than Damian. I believe Damian regrets his kills, but the closest he comes to saying so in front of the batfam IIRC is saying he wishes he was like Bruce (to Bruce, after he killed Nobody V1). He articulates why it was wrong in front of Maya, and that he shouldn’t have done it, but not in front of anyone else. If anything, he is defensive of his actions when confronted with them* and when Tim keeps bringing up his past in B&R 2011 what he does is bring up the time Tim came close to killing someone in anger and accuse him of not standing by what he believes

Either way, it makes sense with the characters involved and his character development, but I think the closest that happens is Maya forgiving him because he changed (and TBH it shouldn’t be on her to say it’s not his fault when he killed her dad, also this was post robining and he HAD been introduced to the idea of not killing people before and tried to stand by it by this point in his character development). I don’t think any of the adults around him try to tell him it wasn’t his fault which TBF I don’t know how he would even react to that.

*which I believe in at least some cases isn’t because he really believes they were the right thing to do, but because he feels he HAS to be because to admit fault would be to admit weakness and give more ammo to people he doesn’t think like him anyway

THE SECOND SONG

Second song also by the name of Honey is by...Big Time Rush. Yep. The Nickelodeon made boyband. This song was written after their comeback and was released a few months ago. The lil thing about after their comeback is important cuz they knew by now that the fans they had that grew up watching their show and listening to them are now adults and shit so have allowed themselves the freedom to write songs more...mature. ANYWAYS, this song is mostly about Cap and his relationship with Damien (i-e-n or i-a-n ???)

Even though Damien never really gave him much attention, Cap was still going back to him because it was still some form of affection.

2."Ruined my night, ruined my life, controlled my mind I could've, would've, I should've, but never said goodbye I never learned, love how it hurts, give me the works"

Cap realizing just how much Damien took from him. And ofc when the piece of shit shows up at the Halloween party and he ruins his night and then Cap spirals thinking about how his relationship and all the things Damien revealed has now ruined his life in his new home surrounded by possible friends. And the last line, Cap constantly going back to Damien (before leaving to the small "quiet" town) despite that small voice at the back of his head saying it's a bad idea that he never listens to or acknowledges cuz it's still some form of affection.

3. "The way you only call at night I can't resist to save my life (You know that) In pieces when the morning comes"

Damien calling Cap for nothing more than just some fun and never for anything else. Cap realizes Damien was only nice and polite at the start of their relationship cuz he thought he had to to get Cap's attention and then began dropping that facade (imagine the cedille is there.) And ofc Cap still went to him for a decent while before giving him up. Last line...tbh idk but it definitely just gives Cap vibez in regards to his relo with Damien.

4. "I'm stuck like honey on you"

A short yet simple line. But sums up Cap and Damien's relationship so well. Despite everything that man's done to Cap, he still went back to him time and time again before finally leaving him and his old place behind. He was attached to the only form of "positive" affection he had received. And ofc th fear of never finding anything better would set in but PAT IS RIGHT THERE. But yes, he become slightly dependent on the man and then finally escaped only for the mf to appear outta fuckin nowhere and remind him of everything they had done together. As if Cap would always be stuck with him. (which ofc he isn't cuz my guy Patrick fuckin Butcher knows how to treat a man.)

yes, omg this is SO Cap thinking about how Damian ruined the actual specific night, but also how he worries that he's going to lose his friends and that he'll have to move again.

It's been a while since I've reread my own fic lol so I don't quite remember how much detail I went into about this but the Captain definitely knew it was a bad idea to continue seeing him, but any time he stopped, his nights/general free time would become solitary and he'd be inundated with thoughts of other mistakes he'd made (*cough cough* Havers) - going back to Damian is a way of punishing himself for that, and also a way to remind himself that this is probably all he deserves and that he's lucky to have even this.

yes for sure! i just imagine him always like, totally hollow whenever he leaves in the morning. there's a lot of self-hatred there and that's what Damian picked up on before realising he didn't have to try so hard to get Cap's attention.

it's the fact that he knows! (i am rereading the beginning of chapter 1 now)

he knows exactly what's going on and that makes it all the more frustrating for himself to be unable to break away.

yes! the thought of 'is this really it for me?' and the fear that even though everything was Shit with Damian, it might have been the best he'd have ever gotten.

jason todd just gets back up if you kill him. like, he doesnt have superhealing normally. but if he dies he pops back up like a daisy. THIS. like honestly. As soon as they had hum reunite w Talia instead of Bruce (I think, I'm not entirely up-to-date on the comics themselves but I've read overviews to keep up w the lore) I kinda got lowkey pissed off at DC.

Bc like I get it, they're going for drama or whatever, but Damian, as a character (imo) is stupidly loyal almost to a fault. So saying he would pick the woman who abandoned him at nine after p much treating him like a weapon his entire childhood rather than the people who (while not great to him) actually did care abt him (tbf this is. Less directed at Bruce and more at dick/the other siblings. Comic Bruce needs parenting lessons ASAP)

Like, if I were Damian, I would be pissed at Bruce too. But we are given no motivation for Damian being a villain other than "Bruce mean >:[[[[ Damian raised to be bad so he be bad >:[[[[" like ok being brainwashed by Talia or something is a totally viable reason but this sudden, complete 180° from how he previously behaved is. No. I've read fanfics better written than some of the stuff dc is putting out rn tbh.

I'm just so tired of taking perfectly sympathetic characters and bastardizing and demonizing them purely because they aren't like. Great people and model citizens, it's so annoying because someone can be 'evil' but also still be understand and sympathized with, regardless. (Different Fandom but I've seen this happen a lot with the bungou stray dogs Fandom and it absolutely breaks my heart to see the lack of effort put in to understand complex characters)

I think people really need to understand (DC WRITERS ESP MY GOD Y'ALL) that just because someone has a lot of flaws and isn't perfect, doesn't mean you can't understand them. I think the beauty of fictional characters is how you can see the multiple facets of them and the different sides of them and truly SEE them. Fictional characters can be complex, but they're honestly easier to figure out than most people to me.

So DC on their Facebook page put out some art of Damian punching the windshield of the Batmobile with Bruce in it.

They added the caption: You think your kid is bad...

And I'm angry over that because come on. Bruce is definitely not a saint or Father of the Year at this point. If anything with the way he treats Damian, he kinda had this coming. But bad writing is bad writing and DC wants to make Damian into a villain so damn bad.

But y'all. The comments on that post were just awful. I get people don't like Damian but holy cow some of those comments were just downright disturbing. And I think the biggest thing that gets me is that you can plainly tell that these folks don't read comics.

Tim centric fics are wild because I swear I've seen some where it's post!UTRH or something but Tim is somehow fourteen still. I remember one where they made Tim twelve to Jason's ~20 which is a. Choice. Like I know fanon loves disregarding canon ages but come on.
