Thoughts on The Bad Batch Episode 6 - Infiltration - A Discussion Post

This week's two episodes really took us through another rollercoaster. Let's look back on all the details that got us excited!

Rex makes his return by delivering Senator Avi Singh and his droid GS-8 to Senator Riyo Chuchi on Pantora, who continues to recruit people for fighting against the Empire. I was surprised to see Senator Singh again; every episode that's happened in the series really had a good purpose for the story.

Howzer also appeared, and I'm so happy he's back!

One of the Clone X troopers had appeared, sneaking around and attempting to attack the senators. Rex and the others try to attack the trooper, and Howzer manages to stun him. The trooper ends up being another unidentified clone, and the boys take him into custody.

We arrive at the monastery on Teth, which had first appeared in the Clone Wars movie. Rex and the other clones have built themselves a base here, where they are safe and far away from the Empire.

Rex and Howzer go to see the CX trooper they took into custody, as they had the shocker removed from their teeth, learning from the scenario that happened last season. Rex tries to reason with the trooper, who refuses to talk.

Fireball had looked through the device that they found with the CX trooper, and Omega was shown on that device. Rex decides to contact Echo and Hunter, calling them here to talk to them about the situation. Everyone's after the poor girl, and none of the clones are able to catch a break.

The CX trooper that we've all got our eyes glued to appears once again on-screen, asking "Why have I been activated?" We finally get to hear this trooper talk, and his voice is very hidden by the helmet. He is given a mission to track down the CX trooper that went missing, and we go on to pay close attention to him throughout the episodes. When I tell you my heart was racing every time he appeared on screen, I was really trying to think hard and connect the dots. I'm a Tech believer, but with the new theories emerging on this trooper potentially being other clones as well, every theory is so intriguing.

While on the way to Rex's base, Omega copying Crosshair was the cutest thing ever. She went from copying Hunter in Season 1, copying Phee in Season 2, and now this in Season 3. (Hunter's definitely having flashbacks.) Girl's growing up too fast for me 😭

Can we just take a second and look at Wrecker's smile here? It was so heartwarming to see him smile like this while he was petting Batcher. He's so cute.

The crew arrives, and Howzer keeps his eyes locked on Crosshair. The little nod Rex and Omega shared was so adorable. Howzer speaks up to talk to Crosshair, who stays silent. He reminds him of Ryloth and what happened, and he has good reason to be upset.

Not gonna lie, I was expecting Rex to look at Batcher and be like when did y'all get a dog 🤨

Before leaving to go pick up Gregor (wherever he is), Echo gives Omega a new crossbow, replacing the Zygerrian crossbow she used to have before being taken to Tantiss. I still wonder what happened to that weapon, it was just completely lost. Omega loves her new gift and thanks Echo, and I can't wait to see her use it.

Rex and Howzer show Hunter and Crosshair the information they got so far from the device they obtained from the CX trooper they have, and Crosshair starts to open up about what he went through on Tantiss, talking about Hemlock's conditioning. Howzer continues to suspect anything Crosshair says, and Hunter gets protective for his brother. The boys decide to ask Omega about why they wanted her on Tantiss, and she says that it was so Nala Se could work for them.

I feel like I could tell that Omega does not want to talk about anything she went through on Tantiss and whatever she experienced. She looks so hurt at times ever since she became reunited with her family, and she wasn't even eating in this episode. She always keeps giving Batcher her food. Omega mentions "M-count", which Rex has heard of before, but doesn't know what it means. I wonder when they'll learn what it means and how they'll try to figure out why Omega is needed for this.

Meanwhile, the CX trooper sent from Tantiss had arrived on Teth and located the clones' base, and had snuck in without ANYONE noticing. Batcher's senses felt something was around, but she shrugged it off and continued eating. Not even Hunter's enhanced senses had felt something was around. I felt like maybe these troopers were designed to avoid those kinds of things, and maybe Hemlock learned about Hunter's abilities and attempted to avoid them.

Anyway, he looks around and spots Omega, immediately running out and contacting someone.

When Crosshair found out they have one of the CX troopers in custody, he goes with Rex, Howzer, and Hunter to see him. The second he lays eyes on the trooper, there is genuine fear in his eyes. What did he go through on Tantiss?

The CX trooper recognizes Crosshair and begins to talk, and knows the Empire is coming for them. Crosshair insists they leave, while the others keep wanting information, and Howzer gets more suspicious.

Right outside, the bombs CX-2 planted around the base are set off, triggering multiple explosions. He re-enters the base, firing shots, as everyone hurries to protect the base. The trooper manages to shoot the CX trooper they have in custody, making them unable to get further information. The fight continues until the base is wrecked, causing the CX trooper to be crushed under rubble, and the others get locked in the place they kept the trooper in custody after the rubble blocks their way out.

RIP to Fireball 😭

Wolffe finally makes his appearance! He continues to be a soldier of the Empire, but he definitely is no longer under the influence of the chip. The episode ends here, and I was screaming the entire time Wolffe appeared. Someone go summon the force ghost of Plo Koon so he can knock some sense into his son.

This episode was full of context, but there's still so much mystery behind everything. The next episode was full of even more action, and I had my eyes glued to the screen.

Rex had assigned you to be a bodyguard for Senator Riyo Chuchi after her own guards had been lost in an assassination attempt, especially now that she was neck-deep in her support of the Clones. She was going to need someone to watch her and she didn't want to risk anymore of her own security detail, so Rex entrusted you with that task, which you were glad to undertake. You and Riyo were similar in the fact that you both weren't Clones, but supported them in everything, fighting for their right to have a place in the galaxy. Though, after the Emperor declared the Clones were dangerous and would be replaced by his own order of stormtroopers, you knew that you and Chuchi had a lot ahead of you to help protect the Clones.

Soon after, Rex really began working hard on improving his underground network of Clones to fight back against the Empire while you helped Senator Chuchi from the inside. Neither side had it easy by any means. You and Rex kept each other informed of everything going on. He was always checking in on you, making sure you were safe. You were important to him, just as he was important to you. There was always something unspoken between the two of you that you honestly were a bit surprised hadn't been brought to light yet, given the constant danger you both were in. It didn't matter, though. You both had work to do and lives were at stake, so any feelings would have to wait.

A few months later, Chuchi was going to meet with Senator Avi Singh, the former Separatist Senator, and both you and Rex were going to be at that meeting for extra security. It wasn't long into the meeting that Rex got word something was wrong and then suddenly, there was a beeping noise in the room. A thermal detonator was thrown through the window of the room and Rex jumped into action. He caught the detonator and threw back out the window, nearly seconds before it exploded.

He had saved both Senators' lives, but seeing him throw himself into danger with such a close call made your heartrate spike with fear. He could've been killed just then had he only waited a few seconds more. Before you could say anything, he ran off to pursue the assassin while you got Senator Chuchi and Senator Singh to safety.

Some time later, he met back up with you, reporting that the assassin got away. Once you saw he was all right, you suddenly couldn't hold back.

"What were you thinking, jumping in front of the grenade like that?" you questioned him.

"I was protecting the Senators. It's my job to protect them," he stated. Then he looked intently into your eyes. "It's my job to protect you, as well."

You stepped closer to him. "I don't need you to protect me...and even so, I wouldn't want you to protect me by risking your life like that."

"I'm a soldier. It's what I do," he said.

"I don't accept that," you replied, laying your hands on his cheeks. "Do you know what it would do to me if I lost you?"

Rex's lips parted in surprise at the question, his eyes searching yours, but then he turned his gaze away, guilt etched in his features on his face as he whispered your name.

With a gentle nudge, you made him turn his head back to look at you and you stated, "Yes, we're soldiers, but we're also both human. That doesn't mean our lives are nothing to just throw away for someone else's sake. We both deserve to live...and to love."

Then, with those words having been spoken, you brought your lips to his and kissed the Captain softly and lovingly, enough to get your point across and hopefully not scare him away. After seeing him nearly have a brush with death, you were willing to take a chance at admitting your feelings. The time for waiting was over.

The sensation of your joined lips sparked a fire within the Captain that only been just an ember for so long. His arms were around you so quickly and tightly, nearly crushing you against him, and he deepened the kiss almost right away, seemingly wanting to lose himself with you.

After a passionate moment, he broke away, his breath heavy. "I know I said I was protecting the Senators," he said, "but all I could think about was you. I...I didn't want to see you hurt."

"I don't ever want to see you hurt either, Rex," you said back. "Please don't ever do something so risky like that again. We need to get through all this together."

He took your hands in his and gently kissed your fingers. "Together."

Poor Singh. Like even before this, he lead his people to war, thinking it was in their best interests only to be manipulated by Dooku. He wanted better representation for the Outer Rim planets only to end up in a puppet parliament while he thinks the business interest of the Separatist Council are the real power. Then the Empire comes to subjugate his people, all while he thinks this wasn’t already decided.

Echo and The Bad Batch

I've been rewatching TBB because I realised that I remembered very little of it and this time round I'm really picking up on Echo's role.

And by that, I mean that he feels underutilised (I very briefly mentioned this in a previous post).

As much as I love all of the members of TBB, Echo is my favourite, and a lot of that probably comes from an attachment built towards him over a longer period of time. But because he's my favourite, I tend to focus on him a bit more and sometimes it feels like he's just there.

I understand that S1 of TBB was to introduce us to the characters more, let us get to know them better. We already know Echo; we know who he is, what he's been through. So I can understand taking the focus off him a bit. I also understand that he's the odd one out of the group.

But I definitely don't feel like he's used to his full potential within the squad. Echo doesn't really have a specific role, his job is kinda similar to Tech's and because of that he doesn't necessarily stand out.

The thing is, we know that Echo is a brilliant tactician. He's good with strategies and could really flourish if he was given the opportunity. But that doesn't happen. He's a Reg, so he's used to strategies that the rest of TBB aren't necessarily on board with. There are some instances where had they listened to Echo, fewer things may have gone wrong. In the same way that Echo has had to adapt to the way the group do things, they should also adjust to allow Echo's full potential to be used.

And then there's Echo's trauma. This man has been to hell and back and sometimes it doesn't feel like the group really consider this. One moment that stands out is when they have to rescue Avi Singh, a separatist. Echo is clearly put off by this but TBB mainly point out his repeated complaints (part of which is just a habit of Echo's because you know, that's where the nickname comes from) but no-one thinks to ask him how he's doing. And then later Tech says that Avi being a separatist doesn't matter for their job to which Echo points out that it matters to him.

Yes, the whole group have had struggles due to the actions of the separatists, but it cuts so much deeper for Echo. Someone just needs to talk to him sometimes, ask him if he's really okay, because there's a lot of internal struggle that is brushed over by the rest of the team.

Obviously, Echo is still trying to incorporate into TBB. He's still the newbie. And I'm not sure that the slight barrier between him and the others will ever truly be gone because of their different backgrounds, but I hope that as the show progresses we begin to see TBB fully appreciating Echo and acknowledging what he's been through.

A/N: My tags and replies are FINALLY WORKING! This is attempt #4 at posting this and seeing how it goes. My tags and replies weren’t working so I was hesitant to post anything for a long time. Anyways, I posted a small part of this about a month ago but wanted to add onto it. So I took it down and am reposting it now.

Echo couldn’t believe he was sitting across from you. Another separatist -or well technically a former separatist. 

While his face didn’t hide any of his shock, it shouldn’t have really surprised him. Cid had a way of bringing the individuals with more interesting and unconventional backgrounds in the galaxy under her wing. Especially now since the empire had a lot of people on the run and in need of a “friend”.

Shortly after Senator Avi Singh had paid Cid for helping him escape Raxus, he had offered her double in payment if she could manage to get you out too. Of course Cid, a broker by DNA, was never one to say no to more money. That meant Echo and his brothers were sent on another job to rescue yet another person on Raxus. 

“Echo?” You waved your hand in front of his face trying to get his attention, “You still with me?”

You had gotten shot while being rescued. A small graze on your shoulder due to a blaster shoot. It wasn’t anything too bad or life threatening by the time you walked into Cid’s. But Echo very quickly sat you down at the bar, telling you he would help you bandage it up to prevent an infection. 

“Echo, you’ve been staring at my shoulder for the last minute -are you okay?” You asked again, your voice sounding considerably more concerned this time. You had just told him that you were an emissary for Raxus before the Empire before he stopped responding to you.

“You’re separatist,” was all he said. The words coming off his tongue quietly, just under his breath, but certainly intentional.

“Oh,” You nodded, exhaling and sulking down in your chair.

“You’re part of the CIS,”

“I’m a deserter, just like you Echo,” You clarified, your eyes looking back up at him, “I was just a little smarter to leave the Republic before you,”

“Yeah? Well some of us have a sense of loyalty,” He huffed back, taking offense to your words, “We didn’t care about the price we had to pay for democracy,”

The former ARC trooper leaned in close to you. Resting his cybernetic arm on the bar, making sure to give his attachment a good whirl for you to hear. It was a reminder to what the Techno Union had done to him on behalf of the CIS.  

“Echo, some of us were just trying to protect our planet. Our starving people, our children were dying and there was nothing we could do,” You pleaded for him to understand.

“Was that what you were trying to do? Save your people?” He scowled, “Tell me who shot first then?”

“Raxus joined the CIS because they were willing to help when the Republic wasn’t,” You tried to explain, “The Republic and the Jedi Order built an army before they tried to help any of the planets that joined the CIS,”

 “Yeah? Well the CIS went to war with the Republic. Killing innocent people and destroying everything else. You believe that was the best solution to your problem?”

“The Republic was corrupt, inefficient and greedy-”

“Describes a lot like the seppies I used to fight,” He scoffed back, not letting you finish. 

“Yeah? What’s your precious republic doing now?” You finally sneered back at him, raising your voice, “Both them and the jedi seemed to have really stood the test of time,”

“You’re just separatist scum,”

“And you’re just a blind clone,”

“That’s enough!” you heard Hunter yell from across the bar. 

Both of you pulled back, away from each other. Not realizing how close you had actually gotten to each other.

“You two managed to wake up Omega,” The sergeant glared a the both of you, “Took Wrecker and I an hour to get her to go to sleep -and you two ruined it,”

You and the trooper next to you softly mumbled out a couple of low apologies. However it was both very clear that you were only sorry for waking up Omega, not for what you had said to each other.

“Whatever the bantha meat the two of you have with each other, it’s ending it now,” Hunter warned, with a stiff grumble, “Besides we’re all on the same side now,”

“What side is that Serg?” Echo asked, glancing over at you, questioning if it was really possible you could be considered an “ally”.

“We’re not the Empire,” Hunter answered taking a few steps towards you both, “That is if you can focus on not fighting each other and you can focus on the bigger picture,”

“That is?” You asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Not getting killed,” He answered, making it clear the last thing he needed was the two of you going after one another’s throat, “Just because you’re off Raxus doesn’t mean you’re safe -it doesn’t mean any of us are safe,”

“So what’s your plan then?” You asked him, still with an arched eyebrow. While you hoped he had a plan in mind, you were really actually concerned if you were included in it. You didn’t have too many places to go with your home planet being occupied by people who wanted you dead and any remaining rebels still wanting your head because of your ties to the CIS. 

You were hoping Hunter wouldn’t mind one extra person around. He, unlike Echo, seemed to be living in an era where he was fighting to survive, not defending the bygone Republic.

“For now, we stay low, keep our heads down and don’t make any noise -that goes for everyone,” Hunter explained, still in a serious tone, his glare hardening even more at you for the last part, “The more attention you bring to yourself, the more danger you put us all in,”

You hesitantly nodded back, agreeing that you would keep a low-profile. You figured Hunter talking like he planned on keeping you around for the foreseeable future was the best deal you were gonna get. As much as you didn’t like the thought of getting comfy with a few GAR troopers, the last thing you wanted to do was end up with another target on your back. 

“Echo, fix up her shoulder up,” Hunter gestured to your shoulder that still bleeding, “Do it preferably before blood gets on the floor and Cid gets pissed,” 

“Yes serg,” He nodded. Although when Hunter then made his way out of the room, mumbling something about having to get Omega back to bed, Echo rolled his eyes and flipped his commanding officer off with the only middle finger he had.. 

But true to his word, Echo started with cleaning around your wound, trying to get most of the dried blood off your skin with a cloth. 

You hissed when he got too close to the open gash, “Kriff that hurt,” you flinched away. 

“Sorry,” He mumbled in a low tone, “If I could move your arm band would be easier to clean” He gestured to the piece of jewelry sitting high on your arm, just below your gash. 

“Sure, I guess you can if you have to. Just don’t take it completely off,”

“Fine” he nodded, tugging it down your arm just a little like he promised. 

His eyes slowly drifted to the center where a blue stone was situated. It softly glowed just like that of the krill on Kamino. He tried to finish taking care of the gash on your arm but even when he tried to solely concentrate on your injury, his eyes tended to flow back to the stone. 

“It’s a soul diamond,” You said, taking notice of his stares, “My mother was Corellian, it’s tradition when someone dies you take the carbon from their body and turn it into a diamond. The glow from the stone is believed to be her soul,”

“That’s nice,” Echo said, now studying it a little more. Taking your explanation as an invitation to get a better look at it.

“How did a Corellian end up in Raxus?” He asked.

“My mother was Corellian who fell in love with my father, originally from Raxus. They met while he attended Corellia University for engineering. After he graduated they moved back to Raxus so he could become the head engineer at the Raxus Spaceport,” You told him, “She gave her life during the war and I couldn’t transport the stone back to Corellia because both planets were on opposite sides of everything during that time so I decided that this was the best alternative,”

“Better that than being forgotten,” He said, trying to see the silver lining. 

He knew regular civies did stuff for the dead. He had attended his fair share of burials and traditional ceremonies of life for government officials being a part of the GAR and all.  But clones had never gotten the same treatment. Most of his brothers that died on the battlefield were left there. Only leaving a digital file that was probably long forgotten in the GAR database now. The whole thing made him a little bitter about the whole getting together for a dead person.

Some time passed as Echo finished wrapping your arm before you decided to speak again. 

“I’m sorry about your friends and what happened to them,” You said.

“Eh they’re not that bad,” Echo shrugged, pulling your arm band back up to its original spot, “They gave me a home when I didn’t feel like I had a place anywhere else in the GAR,”

You shook your head though, “Not those ones, I think you’re lucky to have them. I’m talking about your... sabacc squad? Or was it called the bakurat squad?” You guessed, trying to remember.

“Domino squad,” He said softly, with a sad smile on his face.

“That was it!” You snapped your fingers finally getting it. A little too caught up in your small celebration before you noticed Echo. The soldier clearly in a trance remembering his original batch mates.  

You leaned in close, “Omega told me about them on the ship -she’s quite the fan. I think she has your whole file memorized,” 

“Yeah? What’d she tell you?” He chuckled, not surprised at all.

“She told me you’re the only one left,” 

Echo nodded, his small little smile gone now.

“Well, maybe we had more in common than we thought we did,” You said.

You had lost your mother and planet. Echo had lost most of his brothers. Both of you had lost your way of life.

“I’m sure we were different people before the war but here we are,” He said looking over at you.

“Here we are,” You repeated, looking back at him.
