tarik's death is even more devastating when you consider how much he would never know.
tarik died thinking abeke and meilin were dead and he had failed them.
tarik would never know shane was the devourer all along, he never knew abeke got her heart broken, he never knew her relationship with meilin changed for the better, that meilin and jhi were freed from the bile, that they mended their bond, that the war was ended. he never knew rollan and meilin got together.
he never knew conor got infected, that his own nephew summoned cabaro and rollan and abeke took him under their wing, that abeke reconciled with shane in the end. he never knew that abeke lost uraza, but that she got her back.
tarik never knew that rollan would eventually create a bond token, his own talisman, from tarik's old cloak. he never even knew rollan took his greencloak vows -- he could only hope. oh god. i am in so much pain.
he never got to see the four grow up. change. mature. become stronger. love each other deeper.
i'm choosing to believe erdas has an afterlife of some kind and tarik has been watching over his kids the whole time bc it's too painful to imagine otherwise.

Remember how stressed Tarik was about letting the kids go to Mulop's island alone? Completely fretting. Completely dropped the serious warrior mask. This close to fighting the Kingray. Made them promise to be safe.
And then he never sees the girls again.

Occult Club AU!!!
I’ve actually got two different versions for this AU but they both share some common characteristics:
- Abeke has an obsession with the occult and wants to start an occult club at their high school
- Meilin is a supoortive gf and immediately gets on board
- The club needs at least 3 members to become official so they need at least one more member.
- (Tarik eventually becomes able to see the ghost boy in both versions bc of occult accidents that he stumbled into.)
Version 1:
- After no one else in school expresses interest in the occult, they try to recruit someone they’re more familiar with.
- Abeke and Meilin manage to recruit their classmate, Rollan, after promising him that he doesn’t really have to do anything for the club and that he just needs to show up to meeting to prove that they actually have enough members.
- After some introductions at the first meeting, Abeke tries to summon a ghost with an old book found at their local library and they actually manage to summon a ghost.
- Conor is the Victorian ghost they summoned and has no memory of his previous life.
- He ends up not being as creepy as they were expecting. He acts just like a high school kid, except much more clumsy and bashful.
- When a teacher interrupts the meeting, Rollan, Abeke, and Meilin are all scared as to how they’ll explain the floating boy in the middle of the room above a summoning circle, but it turns out only the three of them can see Conor.
- The four of them try to live their days normally while simultaneously trying to figure out how to bring Conor to peace so he can be sent to the afterlife.
- When they try to figure out what to do with Conor after school (Abeke refuses that he be left alone), he ends up being dumped onto Rollan and stays at his house.
- Conor keeps managing to accidentally cause poltergeist shenanigans at school while the other three scramble to fix his messes.
- Rumor goes around that the school is haunted by a ghost, which draws attention to the occult club. The three (and Conor but he keeps failing) try to keep the hauntings on the low so that the club doesn’t get banned.
- (Rollan lives with and is adopted by Tarik, a teacher at the school. Tarik is also the faculty advisor for the occult club.)
- (Olvan and Lenori are principal and vice principal, respectively. The rest of the adult Greencloaks are teachers or staff. The rest of the child or younger cast are students.)
Version 2:
- Conor is a member of the student council and known for being very reliable and helpful so Meilin and Abeke go to him and practically beg him to join their club.
- Conor CANNOT PHYSICALLY say no so he agrees to join since he has the free time for it.
- After some introductions at the first meeting, Abeke tries to summon a ghost with an old book found at their local library and they actually manage to summon a ghost.
- Rollan is a ghost that they suspect is from the late 1800’s, who was very visibly poor and most likely homeless based on the rags he wore. He has no memory of his previous life.
- Turns out he isn’t into the whole scary part of the ghost business and instead of the creepiness the club was expecting from the ghost, Rollan just throws out insults and attitude instead.
- When their faculty advisor interrupts the meeting, the three members are scared to explain the floating boy above the summoning circle but the advisor doesn’t notice him. Only the three of them can see Rollan.
- After the advisor leaves, Rollan attempts to leave to go do his own thing, but he’s stopped by some sort of force connecting him to the other three.
- After some experimenting, it turns out he has to be within a certain distance of at least one of the club members at all times.
- Abeke is convinced that they have to help Rollan go to the afterlife. Meanwhile Rollan is not very fond of this idea and argues against it but Abeke is very adamant about it.
- After club hours are over, the three high schoolers (all Rollan is doing is complaining about his situation) try to figure out who Rollan’s going to stay with. After Meilin and Abeke ask Conor to keep him, he says yes because he can’t bring himself to say no.
- Conor stays with his parents and two brothers so he tries his best to seem normal while also trying to stop Rollan from messing stuff up in his house.
- His parents and brothers get kind of concerned over Conor’s nervousness so to avoid suspicion, Conor decides to lock himself in his room and tries to convince Rollan to stop causing chaos. It doesn’t work.
- Conor comes to a revelation that he’ll spend a lot of time confined to his room so that he doesn’t look crazy in front of his family for speaking to thin air.
- After that, Rollan keeps causing at least one of the club members trouble by messing with things in their classrooms.
- Rollan’s determined to have some fun by convincing the school that the school is haunted.
- As rumors of a ghost haunting the school starts circling, the occult club is in danger of being shut down. So Abeke, Meilin, and Rollan try to play nice with the ghost in hopes that he’ll grow to like them enough to stop trying to get them in trouble.
- Rollan is not convinced of their friendliness and is sure that there is a different motive in them being so friendly with him, which at first is true.
- While staying with Conor one night, he annoys Conor a bit too much while he’s trying to study and Conor breaks down angrily.
- Conor explodes at Rollan in a mess of tears and yells at him about how Conor’s been trying to be as good of a student as he can possible be, to get as many scholarships as possible so that he can get accepted into college, which is why he’s joining all these clubs. The fact that Rollan keeps distracting him because Conor has to always chase after him like a chaotic toddler is stressing him out so much along with the burden of wanting to be the first person in his family to go to college since they could never afford to.
- Rollan is silent after Conor’s outburst and Conor just decides to call it a night.
- Afterwards, Rollan seems to have reigned himself in a lot, to the surprise of Abeke and Meilin. They’re even more shocked when Rollan tells them about how he wants to help them figure out how to get him to pass on (Conor feels a bit guilty but doesn’t bring it up).
- The only problem is that Rollan needs his memories to do that so as they try to help Rollan regain his memories, they also try to get the club to stay active since the schools convinced they summoned a ghost to haunt the school.
- Rollan reluctantly agrees to stop intentionally haunting the classrooms but accidents happen.
Thanks to whoever got this far in reading my rambling! This AU is pretty popular among my friends so I’ll hope you guys like it too! As you can probably tell, the Ghost!Conor version is a lot sillier than the Ghost!Rollan version. Which is also why there’s less of it written because most of the storyline is hilarities and hijinks rather than the angst that is the Ghost!Rollan version.
This first came to me when I thought of Abeke and Meilin being occult club girlfriends and the Ronor plot kinda developed from there. Meilin and Abeke are very much involved in the plot and that’ll be clear as day whenever I write a fic or two about this. They all very much become an occult club family!

ah, nostalgia
So, when I was in elementary school, my sister had this book series called Spirit Animals by various authors, and I picked up the first book and read it and was obsessed for a year or two, then put them down and never thought about them again.
But it’s always nice to revisit your old books, so if you’re in the, like, 5-person spirit animals fandom, welcome! If you’re not, you should be. It’s fun. We get a new piece of fanart every few years. You’ll also be hopelessly confused by this post without having read the books.
Now, in blood ties we meet what I think is one of the most underrated and underutilized characters of the series: Lishay.
What do we really know about Lishay?
It’s basically canon at this point that she and Tarik were in love. Her brother’s dead soon before she meets our main characters. Her spirit animal dies at the end of the book, widely considered the worst thing that could ever happen to you. She’s a native of Southern Zhong (in the book of Shane). Oh, and she and her brother were twins. She’s around Tarik’s age, so middle-aged, probably in her forties or at most, late thirties. Tarik describes her as “one of [the Greencloaks’] finest.”
And you can do so much with just that information!
I would actually go so far as to have her and Tarik be married. This is how you can tell I typed this at midnight and that I have too much time on my hands, but seriously, it makes them more than two greencloaks who maybe have a thing for each other trying to keep four kids alive in the middle of a war; they have lives that they left behind! It makes Tarik’s eventual death and Lishay’s entire existence in the series even more tragic. And think of the old married couple jokes there could’ve been!
She and her brother were twins, and I feel like he maybe deserved more than a single sentence in passing. Maybe her brother and Tarik were also friends, and now they have to both cope with their grief. Maybe Lishay’s used to always having her brother guard her back, so Tarik notices that she fights less effectively without him--two halves of a whole, as the whole ying-and-yang thing goes. And with her spirit animal dying, we open up room for Meilin to have flashbacks in Fire and Ice about Lishay helping her through the grief of losing her own father right in front of her. Part of what makes Lishay’s character so interesting to me is that she’s probably the character we see go through the most and worst losses in the least amount of time. Her homeland is being attacked, she’s under constant physical and emotional stress, and she loses her twin brother and spirit animal in what, two weeks, AT MOST? And then she still has to fight a war?
Lishay is a native of southern zhong and seems familiar with the jungles of that region, so why not have her explicitly be a native OF THE JUNGLES? Make up a tribe for her to belong to. That makes the fight in the jungles more personal, because this is her home. Show her skills at hunting, climbing trees, swimming in the rivers, and archery, etc., skills that you could only pick up in the jungle. Give us a perspective of Zhong that goes beyond Meilin’s rich girl, general’s daughter life; give us women of the jungle who are trained to hunt and fight alongside their brothers, people who live in treehouses or wooden huts. And Lishay is supposed to be one of the greencloak’s finest warriors! Give us a taste of her swordfighting or archery skills that makes her so remarkable. Give her a more crucial role in the final battle; show her being close to other powerful greencloaks, like Olvan and Lenori.
And in the book of shane, make it undeniably obvious that the only reason he got away was because of the talismans, not because she couldn’t shoot him out of a tree.
In short, give her the fucking credit.
Anyways. End rant.

Things in Spirit Animals that piss me off:
Abeke and her father making up. He's abusive to her her entire life and then he suddenly makes up with her because she's a hero now? Wow, well, wonder where that change of heart came from. I do indeed wonder. It drives the idea that you should forgive family for everything because they are family. Where did my found family themes go? What about Rollan and Tarik?
Lord MacDonnell not getting what was coming for him. The guy sucks. He's horrible, I don't care if he's on the good guys' side. In fact, it makes the story more complex that he's on the good guys' side. I quite like that, actually. Lord MacDonnell was a good addition to add to the nuance of the Greencloaks not being the source of supreme good all the time. Proves how low the Greencloaks are willing to stoop to get allies to defeat the Conquerors, shows how desperate they are. Rollan literally seethes with rage at him during their last encounter in Hunted. Then suddenly he's fine with him in later books because he's on the Greencloaks' side? Rollan joining the Greencloaks eventually makes sense. Rollan immediately forgiving all the Greencloaks' allies for everything ever because of joining the Greencloaks does not. Look, I understand that in fiction, people can be bad people, have the audience understand they are bad people, and still not get what they deserve. I get it. (That's actually what happens with the Lord of Trunswick. He actually gets a semi-happy ending. But it's made explicitly clear in every possible way that he absolutely sucks and did not deserve that ending whatsoever.) But that doesn't change the fact that the whole narrative about MacDonnell shifts in the later books in order to make him out to be some sort of hero. And that harpist never gets justice.
I like that Kirat got character development. Look, I really do. But doing it by telling the kid that he's related to a hero was not the way to go. Please. What was that. Again, it drives home very family-defines-who-you-are vibes which I am not a fan of.
The two legendary bond tokens being lost to sea. Please, what the hell was that. And everyone just accepts it? Why. It couldn't have been difficult to write in a single paragraph, nay, a single sentence in the last chapter expositing that the Greencloaks searched the sea and found them eventually. Please, what is this.
Conor's entire personality changing in The Dragon's Eye. That was not character development. That was character assassination. I honestly would've been down for Conor ending up the way he is in The Dragon's Eye, but it needs to happen over the course of several books, not off-page between the last and second-to-last book.
Rollan and Meilin's jealousy and miscommunication arc in Stormspeaker. Despised it. It was vile, and ruined everything I love about them. Thankfully, we go back to normal Reilin in The Dragon's Eye. So at least we didn't finish their relationship on such a horrendous note.
Shane and Devin/Worthy never interacting on page, as far as I am aware. Correct me if I'm wrong. Then, in The Wildcat's Claw, we're given a bunch of lengthy exposition from Worthy talking about how great a leader Shane was and how he taught Worthy to fight and all those other stories. They always felt so empty to me because Shane and Worthy's bond has next to no canon basis whatsoever.
Connecting to the last point, Shane not appearing in Hunted. Perfect opportunity for him to bond with Devin, manipulate him a little, be a disingenuous lying little shit, appear sympathetic toward Abeke while trying to get her back (and failing), then disappear right when times get tough and leave Devin and Karmo stranded in the dungeon. This would give Worthy mixed feelings about Shane, complex-ifying their relationship. Then, before the Redcloaks-are-former-Conquerors reveal, we could see Shane and Worthy fighting side by side. Abeke and Rollan could note their mask designs, which would help identify then as Shane and Worthy later.
The Tergesh not being able to summon spirit animals. Please, what is that nonsense. I hate it. Also, if they can't summon spirit animals because of their existing connection to rhinos, the logic follows that Conor shouldn't be able to summon Briggan because of his existing connection to his sheepdogs. (Although it is interesting to think about an AU where Stetriol gets its hands on this knowledge and tries to use it to their advantage. They start animal shelter programs and such to try to keep people from summoning spirit animals and contracting the bonding sickness.)
How the heck did Meilin's father get his hands on the Bile? How was he convinced to give it to his only daughter? I adore the Meilin-Bile arc, okay, but its origins are kind of a plot hole.
The Wyrm as a villain. You're telling me after all the complexity and nuance we get in the first arc, the second arc's villain is a stereotypical giant blob of fleshy goo that, get this, literally wants to eat the world? Who came up with this? You could argue that the real villain is Zerif, but even then, he's incredibly flat as an antagonist. You could also argue that this is meant to redeem Kovo and Shane, but that also feels weird, as there are almost certainly better ways to do that.
Shane dying right as he was getting redeemed. I'm going to be so honest, I think Shane had to kick the bucket. I love him, but he had to die. But not before he and Abeke could have a proper conversation and get to a better place and have some bonding moments that are full of trust and friendship! Please, what the heck is this?
The other Great Beast summoners getting little to no fleshing out or understanding. By far, the most interesting one is Anuqi. She hates the Greencloaks, and for a valid reason, too. This is literally so interesting. Please, they could've done so much with her during the second arc. Raisha is a close second. Not a fan of the fact that her backstory is literally just "I was a bored rich girl" which apparently voids her of any human compassion, but whatever.
Shane and Zerif's relationship never reaches a good climax. (Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fi-)
What do you mean Abeke didn't kill Zerif? What do you mean? After vowing to, and failing, not once, but twice, Zerif sacrifices himself? Where's the thematic significance in that?
Conor's Wyrm arc. He's next to useless the entire four books, he doesn't do anything of actual value to the quest, and he's treated like a burden the entire time. Honestly, if you hadn't read the first series, you wouldn't even realize he's a main character aside from the fact that he gets a few chapters. He gets very few moments to truly shine in the series. Instead, it should've been Takoda who was infected. It would also strengthen his relationship to Xanthe, because she'd first insist they leave him behind, then she'd grow attached to him and decide to bring him. It gives Xanthe a character conflict between wanting to leave Takoda behind because she's been taught all her life that the Wyrm is the supreme evil and not wanting to leave Takoda because she likes him. It also does the same with Kovo, who has spent his entire existence fighting the Wyrm, only for him to be bonded to someone who's infected. Conor would have more opportunities to act like a real main character. And Takoda has chapters from his perspective, too, so it's not like we couldn't have had some perspective on what it's like to be infected. But Conor is still a primary main character, and he does nothing except hike with the group and cough for the majority of that arc.
Zerif not being at all fleshed out and just being a mustache-twirling, evil-laughing cartoon villain that just wants power.
The bond tokens. Not the concept itself, but the execution. So many of them were just what they could already do, except stronger, and Meilin's didn't even work? Please, what is this.

Mk Spirit animals au.
I have read the book spirit animals and the four main character Connor, meileen,Rollan ans abeke who have the four fallen animals remind me.
Connor- Liu Kang both are peaceful, strong leader and are willing to sacrifice stuff for their families. Connor spirit animal was briggain the wolf and for Liu kang it will be different it could be a lion or a red bird.
Meileen- Hatsune (my oc) both are stubborn , cold heiresses but slowly warms up to the others and they are daughters of two rich corrupted people. Meileen spirit animal is jhi the panda and hatsune spirit animal is either a fox or red panda.
Rollan- kung Lao both are arrogant, cocky and pranksters plus they both don't trust people that easily and are a bit quick to judge people. They both have parental figures for rollan it's Tarik and for kung Lao it's madam bo. Rollan spirit animal is essix the falcon and kung Lao spirit animal could be tiger or crane I am more leaning on crane.
Abeke- kitana both daughters from a royal family that were different and the sister is very more favoured. Both had fallen for the villains schemes hinking what they were doing was good until the leader shows them to the right path. In this case Connor and Liu kang. Also abeke fell for Shane and Shane is like rain also rain was hinted to be kitanas ex. Abeke spirit animal is urza the leopard. Kitana spirit animal could be a humming bird or a swan.
When I think about it most characters from both are a lot similar.
Spirit animals create a bond with humans and they give them powers like no other like strength, speed, visions and sight hell they even got elemental affinity.
Hey, Dragon!💕
Well, I haven't seen the book so I'll take your word for everything😅
I really can't see Liu as a wolf, I get the idea of the Connor guy being one, pack leader, and all that, but I just don't think it suits Liu. Nor, I think a lion suits him. The red bird, however, reminded me of his new Animality, the Phoenix, and I'd like to see something leaning more towards that!
For your Hatsune, whatever you say, I'll agree, it's your gal! A fox is already her signature animal, but maybe a red panda could be an interesting change?
The tiger is already Kung Lao's new Animality, but a crane really does suit him!
I think any bird fits Kitana! Swan looks very regal, but the hummingbird's bluish tones suit her well!
This sounds like a really cool AU! I'm looking forward to seeing where you take it, Dragon!👀💕

Your unpopular spirit animals opinions?
Ooooooh okay. Good one, anon.
These are probably lukewarm takes, but I don't have anything hotter. I love everyone in this series. I can't fault the writing because Spirit Animals was marketed towards children. And despite that, I think the team of authors did most of it right. I'll add more if I think of any.
The third arc should not have been written;
Shane's death was not only unnecessary, but a disservice to his character and detrimental to the narrative;
I can't see Conor and Abeke's relationship as romantic;
Tarik is made out of cardboard;
Tellun sucks as a character;
I like that we were given no backstory for Zerif;
Shane and Abeke were canonically in love;
The Dragon's Eye and The Burning Tide are easily the worst books of the series.

Headcanon of the Day #5
The four fallen kids will casually have a sleepover out of nowhere. Like Meilin might showup to Abeke's room for something and next thing she's brought a blanket and they're just talking. Jhi and Uraza will just be there lazing around. Then, because Rollan is Rollan, he'll bang open the door Conor peeking in behind him. Before Meilin can kick him out, he'll make a bee line for Jhi and cuddle up with her. They kinda just come to the conclusion that their all going to sleepover. Their spirit animals also join the pile kind of? (I feel like Uraza and Briggan would sleep close to their respective partners but like also share their warmth with everyone else.) Jhi basically has all the kids cuddle piled around and on her and she's happy like that. Essix is Essix so she may just stare at them all or like sleep on top of someone's head. When they all wake up in the morning, it's to Essix screeching to be let out and Tarik banging on the door cause they're late.

Film Animasi Berdasarkan Game Lebih Baik atau Lebih Buruk?
Tumblr media
