Target 5k by Nikki Lee

Target 5k excited me in many ways. I really enjoy interval training. Whether that be swimming, running or boot camp. I get a buzz on intermittently flogging myself because I don’t have the fitness to flog myself for ages.

It’s hard working shift work and finding the time to come to training. T5k gave me something that was not only structured but it had something measurable at the end of the 8 weeks. I could do the training in the morning if I was on an arvo shift on a Tuesday or Thursday. I seemed to have a lot of shifts on these days so it meant solo training for me. I had a few questions along the way. The coaches were happy to answer them for me.

I’m also training for a half marathon in August so I wasn’t sure if I could do both speed work and distance training at the same time. Time will tell.

I had a few hurdles along the way. I suppose not really a hurdle, I had a holiday in Thailand from the 12th June to the 22nd June. This meant that I had to work the training into my holiday. I programmed my watch with the required intervals for that period and I was all set. I didn’t count on the humidity (I know! How stupid) or the heat rash affecting my ability to run. So the back up plan was to run on the treadmill. I put in a couple of sessions whilst there on the tready. I wasn’t used to running in such humidity and heat so I really struggled. But I got it done.

Fast forward to the end of the 8 weeks and I’d managed to complete maybe 75% of the sessions. I was feeling much fitter and most of all I was more comfortable with my running.

D day was the 21st July, I’d also booked myself in to do Sri chinmoy 10km the next day. That was a bit silly. We arrived at Lalor parkrun pretty early. About 7.20 am and it was cold. At least it wasn’t raining. Col and I went off on our separate ways to warm up. I walked a couple of laps around the boggy lake, did my activations and increasing sprints. It wasn’t long before Beaker was up on her debut as RD. You couldn’t tell. She was a natural. I spied Shona don the 34 min pacer bib and Clint had the 32 min pacer. They were my target today. My previous time here was 35.35. My goal was to get under 35 min.

We set off and I was in front of both of the target pacers but it wasn’t long before I was behind them both. Hills are not my friend, even little ones I slow right down. I managed to stay near Shona for most. I even overtook her from about 2 km to 3.5km. Then we turned around and that damn hill that never ends was there. My nemesis. Shona wizzed past me and tottered off into the sunset. I tried to stick with her as best I could but she was soon a blip miles ahead. I knew that once I got to the top of the hill I could go a bit faster so I just said to myself just keep going. One foot in front of the other and don’t stop. I got to the top of the hill and I knew the finish line was close. Judith and Paula had overtaken me some time ago and they became my new pacers. They got faster coming down the hill too so as hard as I tried I couldn’t catch them. I was running down the last straight and my watch stopped so I had to restart it. I came through under 35 min but I wasn’t sure how much due to the restart. Kaz asked me if I got a PB. At the time I thought I may have. But wanted to wait for official time.

34.53, I got my fastest time for this year and a PB for Lalor. I did it!

Would I do T5K again? Yes. I thoroughly enjoyed it and the results I achieved.

Cake mixing is a very important event in a hotel calendar. It's the beginning of festive season for the hospitality industry. Though it's more of an PR event, it also gives a chance for the establishment to reach out to their guests to launch various upcoming events till new year. Raj Kachori - popular snack from Rajasthan is very common in North Indian weddings and functions. However, it has been now commercialized as a regular snacks in food joints. Getting ready for lunch? How about some 'Pathar Jhol' (Bengali Mutton Stew), the Sunday one? The one in this picture is from #CallofBengal located in Gachibowli, Hyderabad served for as a part of their regular menu and also on special promotions. Currently, I consider it as the best Pathar Jhol available commercially in Hyderabad. A Bengali home staple which has reached a mythical proportion by the virtue of us bragging about it. Light on tummy, this dish is a #musthave Though the times have changed and goat meat or any read meat are slowly getting replaced due to urge of healthy eating, but the Patha'r Mangsho (goat meat) still holds a lofty place and cooked in all special occasions. . .
