expanding on that post about sophie devereaux backstories, grift ones and real ones and the things in between:
a year or two after they meet, tara and sophie are somewhere near drunk in a hotel room after a con, high heels thrown against the wall, dresses unzipped and halfway off. tara asks for her Story. the Story. and maybe she wouldn’t have asked if she were sober or maybe tara is simply a little too bloody brave sometimes, a little too determined.
so sophie tells her about a father in the military, a mother who died young, a family that moved houses, towns, regions, countries, all the time growing up. about lying to impress kids at every new school. about desperately doing almost anything to fit in for the months or year she’d stay in that area. about sweet talking her way out of a few little crimes here and there, cash that she would certainly never steal from her rich friends’ parents’ wallets, some driving rules she broke when she was too young to even have a license, yet old enough for a cop to encourage her flirting. sophie tells tara that her father died when she was 19, and the grief had led to recklessness. she made a mistake on a too-ballsy grift. she would’ve gone to jail. instead, she faked her death (for the first of many times) and never looked back. it’s the only funeral of hers that she didn’t attend.
and then, tara told her an equally untrue Story in return.
when sophie is duchess charlotte prentiss, her husband william asks far too many questions about her past. of course, charlotte has a Story. all of her aliases have Stories, even the ones she only uses for a day - they all have birthdays, childhood pets, first kisses, people they love. so she tells him that her parents died in a car crash when she was 16 and instead of going into the foster system, the authorities figured she was old enough to become an emancipated minor. she tells him how it was difficult at times, incredible at others, and sad and exciting and embarrassing and bittersweet. she weaves a damn good tale about charlottes life, if she may say so herself - one that’s just painful enough for william to stop asking questions. it works perfectly. but when she tucks astrid into bed that night, and the little girl looks up at her with big round eyes and asks if ‘charlotte’ misses her mummy and daddy and says that she’s sad for ‘charlotte’ because she knows what it’s like to miss a mama… sophie freezes. there’s a lump in her throat and goosebumps on her skin. she blinks down the tears and recovers just enough to fake a smile and kiss astrid’s forehead as she leaves the room. lying has never hurt like this before. it takes all her strength to shut it down, shove the emotions in some tiny box in her head that she simply refuses to acknowledge. she decides, then, that she has to leave this house as soon as possible.
the charlotte Story is one of many that hardison finds. it’s inevitable, when he has to cover all their tracks so thoroughly, that hardison would stumble upon various old aliases. he only learns about the charlotte one from the job in england - there’s no links between her and sophie, but he destroys a decent amount of excess duchess charlotte prentiss information just in case, and then looks for any other mysterious women who happened to pop up or vanish around that time. he notices that there are some things that all of sophie’s aliases share: their parents are dead, they have no siblings, and their life changed dramatically somehow in their mid-to-late teens (usually with those parents’ deaths, or gaining an inheritance, or moving far away). he knows that these are all pretty standard, convenient details for a fake identity. but he wonders, sometimes. couldn’t she have made up dead siblings? estranged but alive parents? a dramatic event in her early childhood or in her twenties? he doesn’t know if the consistent parts mean anything. he doesn’t ask for her Story - not outright, at least. though for the first couple months of knowing her, he does sometimes enquire about little things here and there. did she grow up with sisters, what was her high school like - that sort of stuff. information is his thing, sue him! sometimes sophie just smiles. sometimes she answers, and he eventually learns that her truths, at least, are very much relative. when he decides that she is family - which is pretty early on, to be honest - he also decides not to ask anymore. he destroys old aliases when necessary, but he never reads more than he has to. he loves sophie and that is enough.
eliot never asks anything about her life. not even the innocent, casual, unthinking questions that sophie is used to from other people: where’d you grow up? did you ever have any pets? i always had to share a room with my sister, what about you? eliot clearly avoids asking her any of it. she’s somewhat surprised by that. sure, he’s polite, but he’s also suspicious both by nature and due to certain unfortunate experiences, so she sort of expected him to interrogate her when they first met.
one night, they’re the last two left at nate’s apartment. even nate had gone to bed and left them there, long given up on shooing his team out at appropriate times. sophie’s been drinking tea and flipping through a latvian phrase book to refresh her memory for tomorrow’s grift, and apparently that 90-minute-a-day sleep schedule allows for eliot to be doing one-handed push ups in the living room at this ungodly hour. too tired to retain any more information, sophie studies eliot instead. he’s a straightforward guy. she decides to be straightforward too. she breaks the silence of the apartment and simply asks - is he ever curious about her Story? eliot pauses a moment. looks her in the eye, quiet. doesn’t brush her off gruffly like she thought he might. instead, he asks if she’s ever curious about What He’s Done. that is answer enough for the both of them. they don’t talk for the rest of the night, each going back to their own activities, but the silence isn’t uncomfortable. on the contrary - the mutual understanding ends up solidifying their relationship.
nate isn’t always so intensely careful about his questions like eliot. well, actually, there were many times back in his insurance days that he very much did ask her questions on purpose. and of course, for five years, he asks after her real name. sophie generally thinks of it as a fun game. she smiles at his useless determination and teases him when he comes back from jail. after a while, though, she realizes that the questions about her Story mostly stopped when leverage formed, and stop completely once he proposed. nate never hears any version of her Story. she’s here now, and that’s all he needs or wants to know - just like how sophie is her real name in any way that matters.
the moment that sophie realizes this is the moment she stops caring about the real Story, the burden of the secret and the guilt and shame of keeping it from her newfound family. in that moment, she understands that what happened back then is just a small drop in the ocean, irrelevant to the life she’s built and come to love. she never tells them the story, and she never needs to.
#leverageposting#leverage#sophie devereaux#tara cole#alec hardison#eliot spencer#nathan ford#nate ford#idk what this is. the spirit of sophie possessed me for a while at 3am the other night and wrote something that was part ficlet + partly#a list of hc backstories + part meta. and i just edited it in the morning then hung onto it for a day or so bc i havent written fic in year#and this is kinda a ficlet and idk what thats about! anyway#here it is. the linked post has more details + context abt some of my hcs/theories/General Thoughts TM on sophie#i didnt write anything abt parker even tho shes my fave actually lol. idk i wasnt even gonna mention hardison either!! this wasnt planned!!

Leave it to me to do things at the absolute last moment: I loved seeing all the pretty mermaids for mermay and decided to do a little backstory comic for a galemancer tav I made!
I disappeared into the fugue of modding and now have more characters than hours in a day and one of them is this lovely tiefling tempest cleric/tempest sorcerer: Kozah (he/they with a preference for he)
I imagine his mermaid form to be a gift from his gods Talos and Umberlee for his devotion. Maybe he was born in Cania or Dis around lightning and thunder and when he escaped Avernus, he was drawn to Talos and Umberlee because they felt like home.
I feel like Gale deserves a fairytale princess romance and I’m eager to rp this whole scenario of them figuring out that they’ve seen each other before.
Kozah is feral and nonbinary in the sense that they are an agent of chaos and I have no idea how Gale is gonna handle that — please send help.

This week I'm thinking too much about Lucy's "so why dream?" line, the way her whole demeanor changed as soon as Kate asked about her dream wedding had me in tears for real
The show needs to stop putting whatever drama Sam has going on and explain Lucy's backstory as soon as possible
#lucy tara#ncis hawai'i#I really like Sam but come on we're already short on episodes this season and now everything needs to be about * his * drama????#fanfic writers are doing more justice to Lucy than the show itself#also we don't need Kacy drama in order to get Lucy's backstory#I trust Jan Nash will understand how to do it

nightwatch 2 was a great episode! and it really built on all the good stuff that came from nightwatch 1: a look at the teams' personal lives, a killer fight scene, and good emotional storytelling. it's definitely meant to be a happier episode, though, and it does it well by showing positive progression for the characters (kai finally opening up to someone, chase helping ernie learn to stay still and being a friend) and in particular, lucy and of course kacy. as lucy sums up in the beginning of the episode, nightwatch 2 celebrates kacy's awesomeness as a couple (and as individuals) and how far they've come.
nightwatch 2 is filled with a lot of great parallels that help the episode come together as a fitting full circle moment:
lucy being called in during a date and being forced to go fetch whistler because she's the only one who knows whistler's routine vs. whistler already being there because she knows lucy's routine and taking care of lucy's a big part of whistler's routine now, and she immediately jumps to help lucy. whistler being asked to help in s1 on her off day because they needed her vs. whistler not being needed but staying on her off day anyway because she wants to be there to support the team and lucy
whistler outright asking about the cupcake and the anniversary message (in our fridge! bc they live together!), the open dialogue between them this episode compared to s1 nightwatch when they were walking on eggshells around each other because of confusing relationship status (are we friends or just exes) and things left unsaid (whistler's promotion and lucy's loved confession)
kate and lucy finishing each other's jokes, proudly showing off their chemistry in front of ernie, kate openly showing her worry and outrage in front of tennant when she could barely acknowledge lucy in front of their colleagues before (whistler even going as far as basically telling tennant she didn't agree with the decision to leave lucy alone with joe and keep hpd out of it).
their strong chemistry and banter is still there in 1x20, but it dies a quick death when the conversation, naturally, gets more personal and crashes into the gigantic wall erected between them after the breakup. throughout s2 (and especially in 2x19 and 2x20), it's allowed to flourish and develop, it's so apparent and obvious it ends up constantly on the receiving end of Ernie's teasing comments ('heart-eyes' and 'so now you're a comedy team')
lucy getting to show off how she's matured and grown since her time afloat, properly reading the situation with joe, talking him down, not panicking even with a gun trained on her and him getting violent with her, and handling the situation almost singlehandedly
kate showing her growth and experience as an agent, coming in with the timely rescue to save both lucy and joe (taking out the guy who hurt/tried to kill lucy ala lucy taking out andrea medina, whistler being able to prevent Lucy from looking like the bloody mess she was in 1x20)
1x20 parallel with the tables turning on lucy, she's the one getting scolded this time for going off on her own, whistler's the one getting upset at her for almost getting killed and fussing over lucy using the compress (an elbow to the face eliciting the same frustrated reaction as blood, head trauma, and a cracked rib makes me feel something). funny enough, both times their arguing is interrupted by their bosses arriving. while lucy talks up kate to curtis even tho she's mad at her, kate doesn't even attempt to hide her offense from tennant at lucy waltzing back into danger and leaving her ice pack. (also Whistler being so annoyed and concerned for lucy's safety she gets involved as backup on a case she and fbi have absolutely no role in Lol)
whistler hugging a crying lucy at the crime scene in front of their colleagues, whistler in nightwatch 1 having to stand there helplessly, watching lucy cry because lucy doesn't want her to talk or come closer, while whistler in nightwatch 2 is allowed to do exactly that to comfort lucy after her emotionally grueling day.
in 1x20, they end the episode separated with lucy walking away while 2x20 ends with lucy moving closer to kate at the crime scene and at the bar
kate spends the latter half of s1 chasing after lucy, trying to win her back. kate can't go after lucy at the end of 1x20 because of injury and lucy telling her not to say anymore, obviously asking for space and distance so kate's left there alone. after they finally talk in a roundabout interrogation (lol) in 1x21, they're friends again, and they're supposed to move on, kate finally stops chasing.
then we get to 2x20 and kate spends the episode trailing after lucy (she's still going): she heads to pearl to see lucy on nightwatch, goes after lucy after she walks out of the conference room to make sure she has backup, goes after lucy when she's in trouble on the boat, and walks up behind her after joe leaves. lucy handles a lot of the case on her own, but kate is always right around the corner in case she needs her.
lucy being on unsteady footing all of nightwatch 1 because she just came from a date and is now suddenly thrust into a case with her ex, had to see her looking hot at the beach, had to see the aftermath of said ex getting beaten up by a trained assassin knowing how close she was to dying, had to hear about a promotion her ex turned down to stay close to her and throwing everything she knew and assumed about their relationship for a loop, had to somehow pull herself together after finding out her ex did in fact care and was serious about them and still broke her heart anyway. lucy is hit with nonstop emotional blow after emotional blow and can't trust her feelings or her judgement. being around whistler just makes it worse so she puts some distance between them, moving back when she steps closer, leaving when she tries to talk.
lucy in nightwatch 2 is steady and sure the entire episode. she starts the case off in 1x20 rattled, but she starts off 2x20 happy and excited, she's in a good stable relationship that leaves no room for doubts, is able to trust her feelings and intuition about joe, is able to appeal emotionally to him and when she finally does let herself cry at the end, she can lean on whistler, wants nothing more than to be around whistler. whistler's a steady pillar for her in nw2 vs. the unsteady, emotional minefield she was in nw1
both cases in 1x20 and 2x20 leave lucy feeling terrible for different reasons. in the former, kate is the cause, the lingering pain from the breakup + seeing kate hurt + finding out about the promotion are a deadly mix for lucy. in the latter, kate isn't the problem, she's the support. she's there physically and emotionally for lucy, doesn't hesitate to tell her she was right and how proud she is of her while in 1x20 its more implied when she mentions medina's takedown, like kate is afraid she might say too much, push too far. the ending of 1x20 leaves both lucy and kate emotionally devastated, lucy finally letting all her emotions out and then steeling herself to go on a date to try to move on and forcing herself to have fun. at the end of 2x20, she goes on a date with whistler, nothing's forced (except whistler wanting them to diligently follow the script LMAO) lets herself be silly and do things like steal whistlers fries, breaking character, both of them laughing at themselves, being free and easy and comfortable
zero stakes because we're two strangers in a bar and youre only here visiting from dc so this'll be a fun hookup vs. zero stakes because this literally a zero stakes non-anniversary, we're just having fun on a date, reliving a moment neither of us knew would change our lives forever, in a comfortable, committed relationship we never thought we would have, sharing an intimacy we couldn't have before. zero stakes because ill never see you again vs. zero stakes because I love you and us and nothings going to change that
whistler being all touchy feely at the bar, leaning in super close and touching her hand, relaxed and comfortable vs. whistler in 1x10 still visibly trying to let her guard down even in an exclusive pop-up restaurant with almost no chance of seeing anyone from work, and still surprising lucy by reaching out across the table to hold her hand, being so hush-hush about their relationship that even something as simple as that in public was a big milestone for them. a whistler who's in love and not shy to show it vs. a whistler still trying to come to terms with everything and make the leap
whistler being hesitant about most of lucy's date ideas in s1 to now being super excited to recreate their first meeting, being on board with lucy's unconventional non-anniversary celebration, being able to let go and have fun with her unabashedly
lucy meeting whistler the first time at the bar she'd go to compartmentalize and be seen as a regular person outside of her job, whistler who was so remarkable she helped lucy forget for an entire weekend vs. lucy going back to that bar with whistler, winding down after a tough case and having someone shoulder that weight with her, someone who's ready to comfort her and stand with her (whether it's reassuring that lucy did the right thing or reassuring her that this date idea isn't silly and is actually super romantic), who also knows how to take her mind off it, whos helping her through it with love and compassion because she knows the job, understands the struggle she's going through, was there for her during the final confrontation and wants to be there for her now. lucy doesnt have to hide or swerve around her job, she can be open about it and share it with whistler, whistler who met lucy tara retail worker or lucy tara finance broker first, whistler who wanted things to be professional, but ended up falling for lucy anyway, whistler who's always seen and known lucy the person underneath it all. recreating their first meeting is a cute non-anniversary date idea, but it also helps separate them from the case and the day they've had, let's lucy be lucy from hawaii and whistler be kate from dc and lets them live in a happy moment from the past with all the perks of their present day relationship
I think Yasmine sums it up perfectly in the interview she gave about the episode: “That was fun to play in this scene especially because since it is a recreation, it’s the trying to be how we used to be and playing all of that out. But then clearly obviously we have a relationship now and just seeing the transformation from where I know Kate was to where Kate is and the fact that she even wants to do this is, I just think it’s so adorable and it’s so cute and Lucy loves that.”
how far they've come indeed
also kai trying to eat his spam musubi and lucy trying to eat her junk food and getting interrupted by a person (johnson and whistler) and then the case is the best parallel of all time
#ncis hawaii#kacy#lucy tara#kate whistler#it took me a few days but the ep finally hit me LMAO#og nightwatch is still my queen but nightwatch 2 is a very close second#nightwatch 2 electric boogaloo was so fun i owe amy my life#i was kinda neutral about the 2n3d backstory before but now youll have to pry it out of my cold dead hands#also lucy being worried that kate was upset about the non-anniversary thing turning into kate being so excited to celebrate it ill scream#I don't usually readmore these but jesus this got long I feel like i said the same thing 10 times LMAO#its funny bc nw1 kate cant do anything right and in nw2 kate checks every box perfectly#some of this isnt even parallels some of this is just me obsessing over stuff#like the whistler following lucy thing might be a stretch but come on LOL its cute#2x19 whistlers glued to lucys side 2x20 shes following behind her when is she gonna be in front of her kissing her again-

Chapter 5 of my Lia x Gale (and Rolan x Tav) story fic, Wild Magic, is out. BACKSTORY CHAPTER TIME.
We GET TO MEET THE THREE SIBLINGS AS KIDS! (YAY!!), as well as three of their parents, we get major backstory on the siblings, and major insight into how all this began - including Rolan's love of studying magic, a look into a potential root at Lia's tension towards Rolan (and wizards in general), and Rolan trying to become the most learned wizard of them all, even if he did get a bit later start.
Chapters 5/6 are also the last chapters without Gale in them for the forseeable future, and the romance plot starts to show up in earnest in chapters 7+
(Going forward i've decided not to mirror the full text of fics on Tumblr and will be posting them to AO3 only, but still plan to link to new chapters when I make updates.

The people voted for Boo! Thank you voters!!
@neuro-whump, @rosesareviolentlyread, @whumper-in-training, @mylifeisonthebookshelf, @pumpkin-spice-whump, @whumpsday, @firewheeesky, @why-not-ask-me-a-better-question, @highwaywhump, @noirineverysense (sorry, I forgot to add you way back when! let me know if you're not interested anymore)
CN: injury/hospital mention, BBU, dehumanisation.
“Hello?”
“Hi, I’m calling about the ad you placed about refurbishing pets?”
“Ah, hello. Yes, I can take them off your hands, no charge.”
“Amazing. Can you collect? We’re at Warrington Drive.”
“One moment please. I’ll just look you up… Yes, I can collect. What’s the designation and company of origin?”
“Security designation, from Euroboxies. HXUF8.”
“And your reason for having them moved on?”
“It failed. The primary is injured in hospital.”
“I’m sorry to hear that. I can collect as soon as tomorrow, if you need.”
“God, yes. As soon as possible, please. Every time I look at them…”
“I understand. I’ll fully wipe and retrain them. You’ll never have to see them again.”
“Thank you. Thank you so much. Let me give you the proper address…”
Kacie was standing with her arms tightly folded as she spoke into the phone resting on the dresser. She was framed in the bay window over the coastal view, sun pouring in from all sides to light her in a dazzling silhouette. Her hair crested her head like a wave, her mouth moved quickly, and she kept her gaze outward, eyes flicking across the scenery as she thought and responded.
She was beautiful even now, fierce and bold with her head held high. Her father’s injuries meant nothing to her in this moment but another task to organise, analyse and overcome. The treatment was one stage. The payment was another. The legal proceedings, a third. Finally, a distant fourth, was dealing with the sorry creature who had failed them.
HXUF8 sat with their knees pulled to their chest and their arms around their ankles. They were used to the cage by now, after so many nights with Kacie since the incident, but being in it during the day always made them restless. She wasn’t supposed to lock them up. They were meant to be out and active, patrolling her grounds or shadowing her around. She didn’t have any security of her own within her property. Everyone was at the gates. One person slipping by would be all it took, but her guard was locked up because…
The yawning abyss of grief never opened slowly. It was like a pitfall. The ground fell out from under them suddenly and violently.
Kacie thought it was their failure, their fault, because it went against everything they were. But HXUF8 knew there was nothing they could have done. A pet, no matter how well they were trained, couldn’t stop a bullet. Not even with their body. It had torn straight through them and nearly killed the primary anyway. Still could.
It was as if they weren’t there. It was luck that kept them from bleeding out before someone attended to them. But they’d lain on the grass, body flooded with adrenaline that made everything magnified a thousand times, and they’d remembered that they weren’t meant to be like this. They’d once had a name, a family and a life. They’d once had dreams.
Everything had vanished after, in a haze of bloody red and empty, empty white. But the feeling had remained. They had done everything right. They’d taken the bullet, but the bullet hadn’t cared. They were nothing.
So they didn’t mind the cage, except for the instincts. They had to patrol. They had to protect. But most importantly, they had to remember why they were grieving.
Not for the primary, the rich man who’d never once looked at them directly, much less spoken to them. They grieved for that moment where they’d been whole again. Just about to die, just about to remember, but it was forever out of their grasp.
And now Kacie was going to resell them, and they’d never remember again.
HXUF8 closed their eyes and rested their head on their still-bloodied knees. They would never be whole. They could never, ever be whole again.
-
Tara had once been someone who went on missions. She had worked doing the hunting and the retrievals. But even though she had excelled, there were always losses. There were always runaways she couldn't catch, simply because of who she was. She was tall, powerful and in control. She had to be. But some pets, especially the kind that had absconded, would see her and run.
That was why she had developed the plan for a new operative. She already worked with Refurbs. Why not use one herself? She needed defective pets to fix to keep her business going, and owners needed their losses recouped. She could purchase one and repurpose it, and it would be more flexible than she was capable of, because it would be a traitor to its kind.
The perfect candidate fell into her lap. The company of origin was dubious quality: Euroboxies were often poorly trained, as the market wasn't well-established and remained unofficial in many places, downright illegal in others. But fiddling with legal loopholes and border crossings allowed her to operate wherever her services were needed. Her hunter would be the same.
It would have to be disciplined and obedient, and trained for pressure and pain to a high degree. It needed perfect recall and flawless dedication. The guard pet that came onto her radar was a sorry sight, by the time she was arrived to collect, but the potential was there.
It had been trained for a guard, but not a guard dog, thankfully. It had restraint and could pass as a normal human, with training. The original principal had been failed, but such things happened and it was less of a disaster in her work. A dead pet was cheaper than a missing one.
She had memorised its designation before arriving. When the seller unlocked the cage, it didn't emerge. It was filthy, a miserable ball of hunched back and bunched limbs, with dirty, mousy hair and sunken eyes. There was intelligence in there, she could see at a glance. It knew its fate would be unpleasant.
"Out," she told it.
It barely had the room to push itself forward by the heels, scraping out of the wires. She watched its muscular body move with a critical eye. It should have had no difficulty in escaping from a dog cage. It showed a promising disposition that it hadn't.
"Stand," she ordered next.
This took an extra moment, the pet's face tight with pain, but it unbent its folded legs one at a time, and then came onto its heels to rise. The seller scoffed quietly and turned away. Tara ignored her.
"Follow," she said finally to HXUF8. She watched it glance to the seller, who turned her head away. When Tara walked to the door, it looked back, and moved in small, wincing steps to shadow her.
She had to let it sit in the car instead of putting it in the boot. She didn't want to risk pet cruelty crusaders snapping her licence plate. She strapped it in and drove, with the windows cracked open to dissipate the smell of the thing.
It was silent and stock-still for the entire drive, but for restless eyes that swept back and forth over their surroundings, assuming the role of bodyguard even without instruction.
Initiative. Another good sign.
The first order of business on their arrival was a cold shower. She worked from an old animal shelter, so it was well equipped to dispense a blast of freezing water. She didn't bother removing the clothes. It would stay in them until she had need to it dress differently.
It entered the wet room without hesitation. Perhaps it knew this part. She blasted it with the jet, and it held still, braced against the pressure. The only sign it recognised what was happening was that it closed its eyes. No cringing, begging or fawning strategies were deployed. Perhaps Euroboxies and their inadequate training would work in her favour on this blank slate of a creature.
One question did need answering, though, so after she was satisfied the thing was clean, she turned off the tap and said, "Do you speak?"
It answered readily enough, voice quiet and hoarse. "If required, ma'am."
"Mistress Tara," she corrected it sharply.
That, and that alone, prompted a wince. It didn't look genuine, more of a nonverbal show of regret. "My apologies, Mistress Tara."
"The first mistake will be corrected. Further mistakes are not tolerated. You are to be retrained and deployed. You will be of use or you will be wiped in your entirety and returned to your company."
She laid out each law with conviction. This part was the same process as always. New pet, new world, and she wanted it firmly controlled without ambiguity. Too many pets thought a new owner meant they could show their personality. She would have no such thing.
"Unless told to stay, you follow. Unless told to speak, you are silent. You follow every order you are given by me, and ignore the rest. You are my property."
It nodded once. No attempt to speak. It was listening.
"I will now test the quality of your training. This begins immediately."
It barely had time to process warning before she was running for it, fist clenched and ready to break it in two. It was fast enough to twist out of the way, but did not return blows. Extremely interesting, and not what a guard should be trained to do.
For a moment they were evenly matched, but the pet was tired and sore, and before long one of her blows caught it in the gut, after which it was child's play to have it winded on the floor. She continued the beating for half a minute after her victory, and then stepped back.
It rose to its knees immediately, face red with exertion. Tentatively, it set its hands atop its thighs neatly. Again, there was no wince of pain, only its slow movements giving away the bruises she had given it.
"Tell me why you did not fight back."
"I was not ordered to."
She turned and crossed the room. There were clothes here, but they could stay in their wet rags for now. It needed to be tougher than just one beating. Cold conditions, discomfort and exhaustion would be added on top. She would put them through the worst she could before allowing them the luxury of a mission.
Instead, she selected a new collar. Returning to her purchase with it in hand, she again noted its lack of expression. The presence of a collar should be reassuring to almost any pet, especially after its last one had been removed, presumably due to their failure. The collar was a conditioned reassurance of ownership and belonging. It should want the collar.
Instead, she saw nothing on its bland features. It waited placidly. She was going to have to hurt it badly, perhaps with the whip. She relished the challenge.
When she leaned down, its only movement was a slight, instinctual lift of the chin, so that she could easily secure the metal band around its neck. This close, she could see the slight tension of its neck and back. Was it simply from her proximity, or was there an old injury there? She would test that too.
She had a lot of work to do. But the early signs were promising, and she was confident she could turn it into something of use.

Anyways it’s about Ebony’s backstory and her joining the LCB and she sits next to Heathcliff and it’s like 16,000 words long so that’s fun

I....... I finished bg3.......
#my og playthrough has been fully played through#i#uh#im#idk what#i dont#what do i do now#i mean i got my durge playthrough (hust reached act 3)#and karlach (somewhere in act 1)#but it's..... over#romanced astarion and chose to look for a way to have him walk in the sun again#though i imagine we also stop in at the underdark vampire homestead#(which just... works so well for my tav's backstory [drow with complicated history w/ underdark])#but that's besides the point#you know. of all the companions in the epilogue seeing shadowheart so happy and free adventuring got me the most emotional#she just seemed to much.... lighter (no pun intended)#alao since her first stop in travelling was waterdeep i headcanon that she helped gale fish the crown from the sea#and they both made the journey to waterdeep together#(hence them having tea at his ans tara's tower)#bg3

I like to think that Kate’s parents either 1) die young, 2) unavailable, or 3) cut ties with her and that’s why Noah’s death hits her extra hard because he is - was her only family and now that he’s gone, she’s alone and in her grief she grew distant from all her friends and only focused on her career, which isolates her even more. I think that Kate is deep down a lonely person who either likes to think that she’s not, that she doesn’t care, or is just so used to it that she only realizes she hates it when Lucy comes into the picture. She is lonely but she also puts up walls to keep a distance from everybody because she knows first hand how it feels to love fiercely and lose that person forever, and Kate doesn’t think she can go through that again and survive.
(Side bar - I also like to think that Noah joins the army because of their parents, he wants to make sure that Kate can go to college, and joining the military is one way of doing it. Kate ended up getting a fullride to college anyway but can you imagine how guilty she must felt if she thinks that her brother wouldn’t have joined the army and died if not because of her?)
And then we have Lucy, who also doesn’t have the best relationship with her family, seeing the way she talks about rich people (aka her parents) and how she goes into law inforcement (not something the mega rich parents would approve). The difference is that she is more open and she is quick to build new connections and make them last and she joins a team with a great boss and colleagues that turns into her family. So even though they both don’t have a good relationship with family, Kate is so jealous of Lucy for having that team/family (as seen in ep 6) because it makes her realize that she’s lonely and that she wants something like that?
#kate whistler#lucy tara#headcanon#well kinda#a lot of these I feel like can be inferred from the show already#but i want a deeper backstory for them#so ive been thinking about this a lot#kacy#ncis hawaii#ncis: hawai'i

i love imogen but you guys gotta stop replacing tara with her in your fics
#when you see literal plotlines+ quotes from tara put into imogen's mouth... and its like why are yall so keen on this#it just smells mega funky#A. stop eliminating Tara's importance in the story. particularly nick's story and his friendships+coming out#B. just make imogen her own person? let her be an individual character with her own motivations and backstory?#C. also can we just validate that nick wasn't attracted to imogen? and thats not bc she's not gorgeous or kind etc?#its normal for bisexual people to not be attracted to literally everyone?? and its kinda incredibly biphobic to assume that we are#or that not being attracted to everyone makes us not bisexual#heartstopper

This women looks like she’s about to tell Spencer and Tara that her old house has been haunted for centuries, like in a horror movie.
