HOW IS THE GALE AND LIA MODDED KISS SO GOOD?!?

I think I'm one of like three people in the entire fandom that ships these two (to the point I'm writing an epilogue fic about their hitting it off when Lia accidentally (?) and humorously comes into magic postgame). And it turns out if you use the mod that lets you kiss anyone as Gale, with Lia, (using Minthara kiss animations) weeping bloody HELLS it's the best thing IN THIS ENTIRE GAME. (and another really good one I included as a bonus). THAT MAN GETS ON BENDED KNEE FOR HER IN THE ONE. WHAT WHAT WHAT.

useful/fun character development questions for couples

there are a lot of “otp questions” lists out there but I just wanted to make a list that was specifically helpful for writers, especially for working out the technical stuff of conveying Romantic Love. so, here ya go, stuff to answer for each character

What, specifically, was the catalyst for their physical attraction (if applicable) to the other character? In other words, what in particular had them like “Oh, they’re...hot...”

Does this change over time? What things do they find “hot” about their partner after they’ve been together for some time, and have had more time to, well, notice and appreciate?

By contrast, what was the moment that first made their ~heart~ Soft for the other person? Not necessarily a conscious realization of “I love this person,” but a moment that had them like “Oh...I adore them...”

Does this change over time? What will always reliably make them melt with how much they adore the other character?

How do they consciously realize that they like the other character? Does it take them a while?

How do they react to the realization that they like the other character? Is it an “oh my god I’m never going to think about this again” thing, or are they pretty comfortable with it?

Do they (or would they) pursue the other character’s affection, and if so, how? Do they tell the other character how they feel? Try to earn their admiration? Woo them with romantic gestures? Flirt with them, skillfully or otherwise?

What do they think about romantic love? Do they have baggage surrounding it? Do they idealize it? Is it an object of longing and wanting, or were they really not thinking about it until they started falling for the other character? What are their expectations like?

What do they think about commitment? Is a long-term partnership the goal? Are they thinking about building a life with their partner, or are they focused on the present?

What scares them about entering a relationship?

What fears, past traumas, etc. would be hardest for them to talk about with their partner?

How much independence do they prefer in a relationship—do they want to share their lives as much as possible with their partner, or do they prefer to mostly do their own thing and let their partner do their own thing?

What is their go-to for making a partner feel loved?

What makes them feel loved? Would they build up the courage to ask for it?

What, for them, constitutes a level of intimacy that they would only rarely share with someone? This can be physical, emotional, etc.

If they had the ability to just spend free time with their partner, what would they do? Would they go out or stay inside?

Under what circumstances would they want to be left alone by their partner?

They’re going through something incredibly difficult—perhaps they’re very sick, have lost a loved one, or have gone through a traumatic event. Do they ask for or accept support and care from their partner, or try to isolate themselves?

Are they okay with public displays of affection? Do they like them?

When would they say “I love you?” Do they say it first? Do they say it often, or is it reserved for special moments?

If sex is something that would be part of a relationship for them, do both or either of them have prior experiences? If not, how do they feel about it?

What does sex mean for them? Socially, religiously, what attitudes are they bringing with them? Is “virginity” something they care about? Do they want sexual experiences to occur within a certain “level” of relationship, or does that not really matter so much to them?

How comfortable are they talking about, and openly communicating during, sex?

What would their partner do that would really turn them on, perhaps unintentionally?

They accidentally hurt or upset their partner. What happened? How do they respond? What do they do to make their partner feel better?

They have an argument with their partner—what is it about? Do things stay respectful, or is there some shouting and accusing going on?

They have to apologize to their partner. Is this difficult for them? How do they approach it?

How do they feel about the prospect of parenthood? Do they plan on it? How would they react if they suddenly found out they were going to be a parent?

What compromises are they making in their relationship?

What completely petty topic (music taste, favorite food) do they find themselves completely at odds with their partner about?

What little thing do they find incredibly (though harmlessly) annoying about their partner?

How do their friends react to finding out they’re a couple? Do they have lots of mutual friends? Did their friends know, perhaps before they themselves did?

Under what circumstances would they feel jealous?

Under what circumstances would they feel protective?

Would they get a pet? What kind? Who brings up the idea, and who takes a little longer to convince?

They're great dancers and will dance with you

Our resident dancing kings and queens. They either know a few different dance styles or are very good at a specific one, either way they're more than happy to spin you around or be lead around the dancefloor. They're all highly in demand at parties and get togethers but they'll save a song or five for you ;)

The black horses out of the crew. You wouldn't expect them to sweep you off your feet like they do, but it's certainly fun going along with it. They don't dance often, and might only dance if you give them puppy dog eyes, but it's certainly a sight to see.

They get stage fright/have a reputation but will dance with you in private

The shy ones, or they'd just prefer to keep up their reputation. You'll never have any luck if you ask in public, but they'd happily waltz you around the living room while pretending there's music. It's all a very intimate and private affair. Just how they'd like things.

It's nothing against you, really. They simply just don't dance. They'll happily cheer on or roast others they see dancing a jig but you wouldn't catch them doing it. It doesn't matter how much you ask, pester, or beg, it's simply going to have to stay a dream.

If you are a fanfic author I genuinely think it is so important to be enthusiastic about your own work.

Posting fic can feel so thankless. It can be incredibly demoralizing because the care and time you put into writing can often feel like just shouting into a void as you wait for people to engage with your work. And I think a lot of new authors shoot themselves in the foot because they're scared of coming across as arrogant, so they post their fics with disclaimers about how it's probably not good, and unfortunately that scares away readers!

Be your own cheerleader! Someone's got to! You worked hard on that fic, let everyone see that you love it! Get excited about the parts you worked hard on and you think work well! Promote your own fic! Don't be afraid to be out here like "hey this is SUPER good, come check it out!"

Why I ship Gale and Lia

LOOK AT THEM. Two whole minutes. Everyone else's kiss animations arguably work better for them than they do their original characters.

We know (Rolan) that she is an EXPERT at dealing with wizards and how to short-circuit their hubris, ambition, and how to bring them back to Earth. (And ps for Rolan Nation: both Lia and Cal deserve top shelf grade A+ love too.)

What does Gale CLEARLY respond to? Passion and Intensity. What are two of Lia's main character traits outside her relationship to her brothers? You betcha.

What does Professor!Gale do in the epilogue? Teach and help people learn magic. What does Lia do the entire game? Give everything to help defend people and keep them safe.

However big or little you think "The Dekarios Clan" really is, it's clear that family is important to Gale. And we KNOW Lia would tear asunder all the heavens and all nine hells for hers.

They're perfect for each other. (When I wrote them, I decided to write a somewhat comedy involving Lia getting magic, but even if you visualize Fighter/Paladin/Ranger Lia, it works SO well.

Dark Rolan fix sounds so good. What/How do you think Dark Rolan would react if Lia & Gale brought Tav back (there are numerous ways to do so I DnD as we see with Isobel) to take down Dark Rolan?

Hi dear Anonymous. Thanks for the question, it opens up so many avenues of development for the story:

• Dark Rolan would have suffered a powerful emotional blow when he saw Tav. Despite all his cruelty and evil deeds, she could awaken his forgotten feelings. Perhaps he would have frozen in the first moment, gripped by memories and mixed feelings. Tav and Dark Rolan could have a tense dialogue that mixes love and hate. Tav accuses him of treason and murder, but at the same time expresses his pain of loss and his feelings. Dark Rolan, torn by contradictions, first tries to justify his actions, but then begins to have doubts. The dialogue becomes an emotional battle in which every word is like a blow, and he is forced to choose between his dark path and the possibility of redemption.

• Dark Rolan may also see Tav's return as a threat. If he is already deep in the dark, he may see her as an attempt to take his power or overthrow him. In this case, he may explode with rage and try to destroy her despite his feelings. This could also lead to a violent confrontation with the resistance.

• Dark Rolan, being cunning and manipulative, may have used Tav's return as an opportunity to consolidate his power. He could capture her and use her as a bargaining chip against his enemies, to control or blackmail them. He has conflicting feelings about holding her captive, torn between his love and his need to dominate. This creates tension as his enemies try to rescue Tav and he himself struggles with internal contradictions. This can lead to a devastating battle or an emotional breakdown.

• Dark Rolan might also have seen Tav's return as a new strategic opportunity. He could have tried to win her over by convincing her that his actions were justified or that he still loved her. He would then try to use her as an ally or symbol to increase his power and subdue his enemies.

• Tav's return could herald an epic final battle. Dark Rolan, realising that his path led to doom, could have chosen to fight a final battle pitting his forces of darkness against the forces of light, represented by members of the resistance led by Tav and Lia. This battle would have decided the fate not only of Rolan himself, but of the entire Sword Coast.

• Dark Rolan may try to use his feelings for Tav to his advantage, convincing her that his dark path is the only way to protect her and save the world. He talks about his plans and schemes, presenting them in such a light that Tav begins to question the rightness of his actions. This creates an emotional tension where Tav is forced to choose between love and staying true to her principles. She may even side with him for a time, setting the stage for future betrayal.

• Dark Rolan may become enraged at Lia and Gale attempt to use Tav against him. In a fit of rage, he vows revenge for their audacity and prepares a plan that will lead to their deaths. He uses Tav as bait to lure his enemies into a trap. This creates tension as Lia and Gale are forced to fight for their lives and Tav's as they try to overcome Rolan traps and devious plans.

• Tav's return is the last straw for Dark Rolan, and he is finally plunged into darkness. Seeing that his only love is now against him, he decides to abandon all human feelings and completely succumb to darkness. His transformation into absolute evil becomes the culmination of his downfall, and his vengeance and destruction becomes even more brutal and relentless. This will create a powerful tension as his enemies realise that they are now fighting not only their former friend, but a being who has lost all vestiges of humanity.

• Tav may have to sacrifice herself to save Dark Rolan. She dies again trying to awaken the remnants of humanity in him, and this event becomes a turning point for him. Realising the extent of his loss, he decides to use his powers to resurrect her. In the process of resurrection, however, he is forced to abandon his darkness. This creates a powerful emotional tension as he realises that the only way to bring her back is to give up everything he has gained on his dark path.

• Dark Rolan is able to face the fact that the Tav who has returned to him is actually an illusion or magical construct created by his enemies. Blinded by his senses, he fails to see the deception at once and spends his powers and resources protecting the illusory Tav. When the truth is revealed, he is faced with even more despair and anger, which can lead him to even more destructive actions.

Lia: … *kneels down and hugs them both tight, clacking her horns against theirs as Rolan starts to cry* you- you dum-… *sighs and nuzzles into them both* thank you for always looking out for us…

Cal: *scrapes his horns against his locking him there with them* now let us look out for you.

I love that we all just collectively love Rolan. That our Tav's love Rolan. That our Tav's are cheering on other Tav's that love Rolan. There's no competition. Just shared love.

belated WIP Wednesday I guess?

so I've been toying around with this no tadpoles AU wherein Gale is the wizard who has taken over Ramazith's Tower and Rolan is his apprentice. then of course I finally am writing Orla's and Gale's love story, which has obviously gone differently than with the canon story, but I do love me a good childhood friends to lovers trope. so here's a lil bit of that.

The golden eyes fell upon the tiefling briefly pleased. Then they glowed in recognition. “This is Rolan?” she repeated without taking her eyes from the landing. An affirmative came from Gale combined with some other related tangent until she slapped a hand against his chest. “You do realize your apprentice and his–” She then turned her voice in the direction of the other tieflings, who she assumed to be Cal and Lia, “–siblings have been staying in a hostel since their arrival, don’t you?”

Gale’s face fell as he looked up at Rolan. “I wasn’t aware, no,” he answered quietly. “Why wouldn’t you have mentioned that you hadn’t secured lodgings outside of a hostel?” Another slap came to his chest. His face twisted as his attention turned back to the woman he stood with. A hand flew to hold onto his now throbbing chest. “Seems wholly unnecessary.”

“Gale Dekarios, where exactly do you suppose three young people who likely just faced exile from the only home they ever knew would find lodgings in this city?” she scolded. “For someone who is so undeniably brilliant, it seems the simple act of common sense eludes you.”

His brows furrowed and lips pressed into a tight line. “Once again, these reactions are entirely unwarranted,” he grumbled, rubbing at his chest. His eyes briefly drifted toward the tiefling still standing above them. There was nothing unusual about Rolan being there as he arrived at least three tendays prior. Gale’s attention snapped back to his apprentice at the realization. Three tendays. “You should have alerted me, though, Rolan. We could have made arrangements.”

“And we will make those arrangements immediately,” the woman cut in before Rolan even had the opportunity to respond. Gold eyes were intense on the tiefling but no longer filled with the same concern they held upon her arrival. “You’ll be staying with us.”

“Excuse me?” both Rolan and Gale guffawed at her suggestion.

With one brow arched, she turned her focus back to the wizard beside her. She reached out to fuss with the collar of his robe, which had folded itself inward at some point during the shelving of books. Folding the collar right side out, she smoothed her palm over his clavicle and lingered with her hand on his chest for a moment. “Yes, your mother and sister will be staying with Aurelia regardless,” she explained, voice softer. “And Tara will certainly bear no mind to the additional bodies in the house so long as she finally meets this highly praised Rolan.”

Into the main clearing of the floor came one of the hooligans she had referenced when she interrupted. This tiefling was tall and broad, clad in worn potentially second hand leather armor. Though similar in skin tone and overall coloring to Rolan, his whole demeanor was gentler. More approachable. “So,” he began with a finger wagging in the air. Rolan’s dagger-like stare prompted him to clear his throat and fold his hands in front of him. “Apologies for the interruption, but… um… Mrs… Of Waterdeep, do you… perhaps have a couch…”

Tumbling in behind the first half of the ne'er do wells came the second. A slight tiefling with her ashy hair falling into her face and a bow perched on her back. “Or even a nice balcony,” she added with a hopeful grin. “Beggars needn’t be choosers. We’ll take the balcony, and you’re more than welcome to stow Rolan in the bathtub if need be.”

Gale

What does Gale ‘grand gestures are my love language’ Dekarios have planned for your first anniversary? Oh nothing special.

Just all your favorite meals cooked & ready for you. Starting with breakfast in bed. A small, light picnic at your favorite shoreline spot to watch the tides come in and enjoy the sea air. Ending with a romantic candlelight dinner that would put some of the finest Baldurian restaurants to shame.

He gives you a book of love poems as your present. Paper is traditional for the first anniversary after all. It is furthermore inscribed with his own, original poem on the front cover for you.

Astarion

He actually isn’t aware it’s your anniversary. Until he is reminded by someone. It’s not that it’s not important to him. Astarion has just never celebrated one before. How could he, when none of his previous lovers ever even stayed the whole night?

He has to work fast. But luckily Astarion is extremely clever and resourceful.

Playing it off like it was his plan all along to ‘pretend’ to forget, only for you to be further surprised is simply part of his plan. He plays it off so well that you believe him when he tells you that he got you a new necklace because ‘it reminded him of your eyes’. He makes a mental note to remember next year and be more genuine in his efforts.

A!Astarion

Of course, Astarion remembers the day you officially became his. Body, soul, and now legally.

Part of it may just be the celebration of having something that’s his. He hasn’t had anything for so long that he goes overboard. And with you, his most prized treasure, he can’t help it either.

The day, like all your days, is just about the two of you. He has a portrait commissioned for the two of you and commits to having one done every year, so you remember what you look like & how happy you are together. The old ones are kept in an archive below for safe keeping.

Wyll

He’s been looking forward to this day almost as much as getting married to you, the love of his life.

If he chose to stay in the Gate and become the new Grand Duke Ravengard, Wyll will host a ball so that you can celebrate with all those you hold dear. Old and new friends. He has the bard’s college compose a new song to commemorate the occasion, one that he can lead his partner out to the dance floor with and waltz them around all night.

If he went to Avernus to continue as the Blade, they will waltz together, alone, on the stoney rocks of the Hells. While Wyll hums a private tune between them to keep the music going.

Halsin

Halsin isn’t much for ceremonies or constructs of time. Nature and time move hand-in-hand with one another without making much note of their relationship, and he feels that they should do the same.

But…he can appreciate that something like this should be marked & remembered.

He will make time to get away from his duties as ‘Daddy Halsin’ to be a husband for a while; no matter how short it might be. He carves them a beautiful ornament. Something of a remembrance of their year to hang on a tree by their home. Halsin tells them that he hopes, one day, it will be filled with as many happy memories as leaves. The tree growing as with their love for years to come.

Who has time for such frivolities? Rolan has an acclaimed magic shop & literary archive to run, along with the magical commitments he has as the new caretaker of Ramazith's Tower. Surely, as his partner, they must understand that.

Lia gives him an extremely firm talking to about how selfish and narrow-minded he is being. That it’s not just about him anymore it’s about them.

Though Rolan will never admit that she’s right, he does make it up to his spouse. Apologizing to them for being so callous and making an effort to be more ‘traditionally romantic’. He presents them with a single white rose. Enchanted, so that it will never die, never wilt, and never fade. “It will always be as pure and radiant as my love for you.
