On this day (9 October 1957) in old showbiz history: House of Horror premiered on Portland, Oregon TV station KPTV. Like Vampira (Maila Nurmi) before her and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (Cassandra Peterson) afterwards, cadaverous cutie Tarantula Ghoul (real name: Suzanne Waldron, 1931 – 1982, affectionately known by fans as “Taranch”) provided campy comedic introductions to horror movies as the morbid Morticia Addams-like hostess of the weekly TV show from 1957 to 1959. Sadly, not a single frame of House of Horror survives (as was routine at the time, KPTV wiped and re-used the tapes of her shows), but backed by rock’n’roll band The Gravediggers, in 1958 Ghoul cut one immortal Halloween novelty single in her brief heyday: "Graveyard Rock" / "King Kong". Both songs are seasonal staples – crank ‘em up LOUD today! Her 1950s TV show may be long forgotten, but "Graveyard Rock" lives on every Halloween. Pictured: 1955 portrait of Waldon when she was appearing in the play "Oh, Men! Oh, Men!" As you can see, even out of Tarantula Ghoul drag she possessed a nicely macabre quality. Horror Hostess Miss Tarantula Ghoul- 1958

Back with the ghoul headcannons! But this time I’m gonna try going more in depth with the different elements the ghouls embody. Each element will get their own post and to begin, Imma talk about Quintessence Ghouls!

So the basics, Quintessence Ghouls are the healers of the Ministry, often being assigned roles such as midwives, doctors, nurses, and even counselors for the other ghouls and occasionally the humans running the Ministry. Their element is the most mysterious to the Ministry, so not much is known about them but from the records of past summons, they worked out that there are subspecies of quintessence ghouls.

First are the most common Quintessence Ghoul summoned, Moon Ghouls. Moon Ghouls are the biggest of all the Quintessence Ghouls, and also the easiest for the Ministry to handle. Omega, Aether, and Phantom are Moon Ghouls though Phantom is still growing and could be due for a growth spurt soon now that he’s in a stable environment. Moon Ghouls are fiercely loyal to who ever summons them but with a small ritual, that loyalty can be transferred to the next Papa.

Appearance wise, Moon Ghouls have more bat like traits, big leathery wings, sensitive hearing, nocturnal habits. Some are even seen using a form of echolocation. Their pack structure often follows a matriarch and inhabit the dark cave systems of the Pit, but will occasionally venture out if food gets too scarce.

Next up are Shadow Ghouls. Shadow Ghouls are far smaller than Moon Ghouls and have a bit of a rivalry with them, it being the reason not many Shadow Ghouls are summoned for the Ministry. They are also more challenging to work with, not having the same loyalties their Moon counterparts have, and if it’s a Blood Moon, yeah there will be at least one death in the Ministry.

For Shadow Ghoul’s appearances, that’s a mystery seeing they are mostly made up of a black fog like element that is in the vague shape of a ghoul. They do have the ability to take physical forms, but it’s often how the ghoul would feel in that moment. Like Moon Ghouls, Shadow Ghouls inhabit cave systems but are more solitary, not having a pack structure and only seeking company to either make kits or take down large prey items.

And the last known subspecies, and the one the Ministry has the biggest headache trying to figure out, Weaver Ghouls. The best theory is that Weaver Ghouls are the normal ghouls of each subspecies but with recessive genes, seeing they are found in both species, but are slightly more common in Moon Ghouls. They get their names from how they manipulate their element, channeling their quintessence into threads and tying them together to create web like structures.

Appearances vary the most with Weaver Ghouls, with the known ghouls who have those trait in the Ministry vary in appearances. The most drastic Weaver Ghoul they have is Omega’s father and Nihil’s Quintessence Ghoul, Tarantulas. That ghoul, though having traits of Moon Ghouls, also had strong traits of Weaver Ghouls, it mostly being his mixture of both bat and spider like traits. That boi gave the best hugs with his four arms. He also had a biting problem so often times had to wear a muzzle to keep him from chewing on furniture and doorways. As for the other Weaver Ghouls summoned, they often either took the appearance of normal Moon Ghouls or normal Shadow Ghouls.
