The Gilded Age's Broadway Divas: Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski)
Christine Baranski plays the curmudgeonly head of the van Rhijn household who always has a sharp word for everything. A bastion of Old New York, Agnes detests change and challenges to tradition.
Tumblr media
In contrast, Christine Baranski has had a long and illustrious career in the theatre, even before earning mainstream recognition in movie musicals such as Chicago (2002 - a delight), Mamma Mia (2008 - an icon), and Into the Woods (2014 - the highlight in a dismal movie). In the theatre, she has taken on seven of Sondheim's finest works to much better success, including the original pre-Broadway workshop of Sunday in the Park with George (Clarisse, later named Yvonne), regional productions of Sweeney Todd (Mrs. Lovett), and the exquisite Encores! production of Follies (Carlotta) alongside Donna Murphy, our Mrs. Astor at large.
Christine is a two-time Tony winner for Best Featured Actress in a Play for The Real Thing and Rumors. We all know her iconic Tanya Chesham-Leigh of the Mamma Mia cinematic universe, so you'll forgive me if I neglect those performances in this list.
#1: "A Little Priest," Sweeney Todd (1999)
youtube
With Sweeney Todd raking in over $1.7 million weekly, let's start with one of many Sweeney Todd productions that's just so much better than what they've got going on at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre these days.
The act one closer is considered by many as Sondheim at his lyrical best. A comedic killer of a number, nailing the intricate lyrics would give even the strongest theatre veteran anxiety (I have seen many a delightful disaster and brutal butchery of this number), but Christine does so with aplomb.
This performance alongside Kelsey Grammar as Sweeney is from the 1999 Reprise! L.A. 20th anniversary concert production at the Ahmanson Theatre. Three years later, Christine would go on to reprise her role as Mrs. Lovett at The Kennedy Center opposite Broadway's leading man Brian Stokes Mitchell. Also featured in this production is another Gilded Age actress, but more on that later.
#2: "Everybody Wants to Do a Musical," Nick & Nora (1991)
youtube
Based on the book/film/tv Nick and Nora Charles, this musical is infamous for being one of the most notorious flops in Broadway history. It had a then-record breaking preview period of 71 shows, and closed after just nine performances, proving not even an all-star cast (including Joanna Gleason, Chris Sarandon, Debra Monk, and Faith Prince) and creative team can make a hit.
Here, Christine plays Tracy Gardner, a fading starlet whose comeback is threatened by an untimely murder. There's really not much that can be said about the plot, but if anyone wants me to recite an oral history of everything I know about this flop, DM me.
It's a miracle we even have a cast album to commemorate this...special show. A full bootleg can be found HERE on youtube, if you want to see this masterpiece for yourself. I can't imagine why you'd want to though.
#3: "A Fact Can Be a Beautiful Thing," Promises, Promises (1997)
youtube
Once again proving her comedic chops, here Christine plays a one-scene wonder barfly named Marge MacDougall in the 1997 Encores! production of Promises, Promises opposite Martin Short. The height difference really elevates the comedy. Her character shows up for one scene (and a half) and in every production, has stolen the show. You can see why. The number really has no plot value, but it's perfect in every way.
A note: Encores! for those unfamiliar, is a series of limited run concert-style productions put on by New York City Center. It was originally conceived 30 years ago to highlight hidden gems and forgotten pieces, but has included more mainstream shows in recent years (y'know, to keep the lights on).
Incidentally, Christine is not the only Gilded Age actress to take on this role to great success. The other actress has a...wildly different approach to the role. But more on that later...
#4: "I'm Still Here," Follies (2007)
youtube
I love Follies. I would commit atrocities you cannot fathom to have seen the 2007 Encores! production of Follies, starring fellow Gilded Ager Donna Murphy as Phyllis, Victoria Clark as Sally, and featuring Christine Baranski as Carlotta. Here, singing one of Sondheim's greatest hits, Christine plays an aged former Follies girl whose big number was cut, but is happy to serenade her audience with it now. My kingdom for a high quality bootleg of this show, please someone must have it.
Full disclosure: this is not my favorite rendition. That honor goes to Elaine Stritch in the Sondheim 80th Birthday Concert. But this one is damn good, now that I'm reviewing it. It showcases Christine's fantastic vocal and acting abilities, and that's Sondheim for you.
In 2015, Christine would go on to play Phyllis in the Royal Albert Hall production of Follies. And I love you, Christine, but you are a Carlotta through and through.
#5: "Welcome to the Theatre," Applause - Kennedy Center Honors (1997)
youtube
This past week, Christine Baranski honored opera diva Renee Fleming at the Kennedy Center Honors, but that was not only time. In 1997, she was one of three mega talents honoring the gorgeous, the glamorous, the golden girl from the Golden Age of Hollywood, Lauren Bacall.
She opened the tribute with a song from Bacall's Tony-winning Applause, a musical based on All About Eve. Side note: people have divisive opinions on Lauren Bacall's singing voice. I love it.
While Christine's isolated performance can be found, I elected to link to the full tribute so you can all enjoy this delight. Following Christine is my beloved Bebe Neuwirth, and the late Ann Reinking (singing songs unrelated to Lauren Bacall, but fuck it). The final trio of all three women is the stuff of my dreams. I need you to witness it too.
Bonus: "Hot for Howie"
Nothing I can say will add to this. I'll just let the song speak for itself.

Bucky's (40/44)
***Contains gore!***
Chapter 40: The Monster Returns
Tanya waited a couple of minutes after Leon and Mr. Wolfe left, just in case the CEO had forgotten something and unexpectedly returned. When she was confident they were gone, she emerged from her hiding place and got to work. The private office was disturbingly dark and quiet, with only the steady hum of electronics filling the space. Tanya’s skin was layered with goosebumps, even though she knew she was alone, and the door was locked.
She circled around to the gigantic keyboard and tapped one of the buttons. The computer screen towering above her came to life, bathing Tanya in harsh blue light as it awakened from its slumber. Fortunately, the computer hadn’t been idle long enough to sign out, so she didn’t have to worry about entering a password. She gazed up at the huge screen, with its plain gray backdrop, and examined the icons to determine where to start her search.
She hesitated as she looked over the keyboard and mouse. She had seen Candy use office equipment scaled to Giants, but the task wasn’t going to be easy. She braced her hands against the mouse, bigger than her entire body, and pushed it using her weight across the mouse pad. She craned her neck back to glance up at the screen and line up the cursor with one of the icons. She thrust her hands down on the button and clicked on it. A screen came up with a row of files.
Operating the mouse and straining her neck to look at the screen was tiring, but Tanya soldiered on. She was on a mission, and she didn’t have much time. She didn’t know when Mr. Wolfe would be back. Combing through each file was tedious, especially when the mouse was so large, but Tanya needed to be thorough. She didn’t want to miss anything important, and she seriously doubted the CEO would be dense enough to label an incriminating file “super secret illegal stuff.” She had to comb through everything, searching even the most innocuous folders for critical information.
Her progress was slow, very slow, as she dragged the mouse across the desk, clicking and scrolling. Most of the files were full of boring, routine, business stuff, metrics and numbers that made Tanya’s eyes glaze over. As she pored over each page, she started to wonder if Leon had been mistaken. There was so much to go through, yet she hadn’t found anything of significance. There was no way she’d be able to look over it all before the two Giants returned.
Even so, Tanya was determined. She kept picking through the computer files, looking over every spreadsheet, report, and document. And then, just as she was beginning to give up, she found it. An inconspicuous folder tucked away, labelled “promotional mock-ups.” Tanya expected to see images of product labels or advertisements or things of that nature. Instead, she found something quite different. Her eyes widened as it dawned on her what she was looking at. She had struck gold.
The first page looked like any other profit and loss sheet she had scrolled through, dry and bland and full of numbers. But the numbers represented humans. Humans trafficked from the small side of the city, bought and sold by Big Corp Inc. to send to Bucky. But that wasn’t the least of it. There were invoices showing payouts to politicians, going both to and from Big Corp: clear evidence of bribery and blackmail. Specific names and stipulations were tied to these transactions.
Tanya pulled up Mr. Wolfe’s email and attached the incriminating files to a new email. She sent it out to every single person in the company. Ronny, Martin, and Leon would be able to broadcast the files to the media and other interested parties as needed. As she browsed through Mr. Wolfe’s other emails, she was shocked to find additional correspondences with his business partners that were blatantly illegal. She forwarded those email chains to everyone else too. She couldn’t believe that the CEO had been so careless, so arrogant that he couldn’t be touched that he made all his dealings in writing. She was satisfied that what she found would be enough to put him away for a long time, along with Bucky and some crooked politicians.
Meanwhile, Mr. Wolfe, rubbing his belly, strolled into the Big Corp building and got into the elevator to go up to the sixth floor. While he ascended, his cellphone rang. He checked the caller ID and saw it was one of his underlings, a high-ranking executive. He answered with a gruff “What is it?”
“Mr. Wolfe! What the hell are you doing?” the Giant cried from the other end. “Why are you sending out all these emails?”
“Huh? What are you talking about?” Mr. Wolfe responded, clueless.
The man on the other end was frantic. “Shit! This is going to ruin us!”
“Slow down,” Mr. Wolf commanded. “Tell me what you’re talking about.”
“It must not be you. Your email account is sending everything to everyone in the company! Records of all of it... the bribes, the blackmail, the human trafficking, tax dodging, all the illegal shit... it’s all gonna come to light! Fuck, we’re in trouble!”
Mr. Wolfe froze up. He swore explosively and hung up the phone, nearly crushing it in his hand with how angry he was. Somebody had accessed his computer. But how? He gritted his teeth. Leon must’ve had something to do with it. He couldn’t see any other way. He had locked his office after leaving. He frowned and checked his emails on his phone. They were still sending out. Whoever was sending them was still there. Mr. Wolfe clenched his hands into fists. He was going to destroy the traitor when he found him.
Tanya kept discovering more and more on the computer that shocked and appalled her. The situation was bigger and worse than she ever imagined. She was lost in files, buried, unable to tear herself away from the screen as she continued to send out all the evidence piecemeal. She opened another folder on the computer that supplied information about the pills: their overarching purpose, their specific functions, Giants who had been poisoned and killed in pharmaceutical trials, threatened, coerced into participation. She sent this information along as well. The more the better.
As she perused a description of how the shrinking pills worked, she was startled by the scraping of a key in the lock. Tanya panicked. She hadn’t expected the CEO to return this soon. She frantically glanced over the extensive surface of the desk, but there wasn’t a decent spot to hide. With only a few seconds of warning, she sidled up to the computer monitor as the door burst open and the Giant businessman stomped in, slamming the door behind him. Giants were usually loud simply by virtue of their grand size, but judging by his disruptive motions, he was enraged. Tanya shuddered, peering cautiously around the side.
His footsteps thundered towards her and around the desk. Tanya only had a moment to think as she scurried to the other side, keeping the monitor between her and the hulking CEO so he couldn’t see her. He cursed to himself when he looked at the monitor. His hands thumped the desk hard, making the surface shake. Tanya nearly lost her balance at the impact. She blanched and trembled. She didn’t have the chance to close anything out on his screen. All the files she had pulled up were still on full display. He knew somebody had been poking through his personal stuff. He knew somebody was in his office, with the door still locked. He wasn’t stupid. He would figure it out; he would find her.
Tanya realized she needed to call Ronny to save her, but she was petrified. She feared light or noise from the phone would reveal her presence. She didn’t know what to do; she was paralyzed with fear and indecision. She fumbled to pull Candy’s phone out of her pocket, but her hands were shaking so much she nearly dropped it. She didn’t get a chance to call before the enormous monitor lifted up behind her, exposing her. She squealed with alarm as a Giant hand roughly snatched her up off the desk.
“YOU! You little rat! This was your doing!” the CEO roared. “I should have never trusted Leon! Dammit!” He rammed his other fist into the desk, making Tanya squeak. His fingers coiled around her tiny body tighter, painfully tight. She struggled to access the phone, but she couldn’t move her hands at all in his grip. The phone was compressed at an awkward angle against her torso.
“Who are you anyway? You’re not one of my human employees,” the Giant observed. He shot her a seething glare that cut to her core as he regarded her contemptuously. He flopped down in his chair with a huff, raising her up and dangling her between his fingers by her shirt. “You’ve caused a lot of problems, but nothing I can’t handle. I have connections. I can still figure out a way to cover this up.” Tanya’s heart sank. Her plan had failed. She tried to hide the phone from the Giant’s prying eyes and call for help, but of course he noticed right away what she was doing.
“Give me that,” he grumbled, seizing the miniscule device out of her hands and throwing it on his desk far below. Tanya gulped. He examined her closely, making her squirm with discomfort. “I think I figured it out. You’re that human that escaped from Bucky’s, aren’t you?” He sneered at her. “I’ll be sure to send you back.”
Tanya failed to maintain her cool at his words. “No! Y-you can’t do that!” she wailed with abject terror. “Please...” She started to cry. She knew how pathetic she must appear to the heartless Giant, but she couldn’t help it. “Don’t send me back... please don’t...” The life she had built up for herself after escaping from that awful place was crumbling before her eyes. She would never see Ronny again. She’d be trapped, eaten again and again until she was unlucky enough to be slaughtered. Her heart couldn’t bear it.
“You’re lucky I’m already full from the big meal I just ate. Otherwise you’d be my lunch,” Mr. Wolfe scoffed. He patted his belly and a wicked grin cracked open his face. “Your precious little Leon is dead, in my gut. I ate another human too, and it’s been long enough that she’s probably dying too. I can’t feel her moving around much anymore.” Tanya’s eyes drifted down to the vast expanse of his midsection below her. She struggled not to scream. She didn’t want to know who was perishing inside him.
“Now I just have to decide what I’m going to do with you,” Mr. Wolfe remarked. He shook her with his hand and Tanya cried out. He smirked. “Hmmm... if you don’t want to go back to Bucky’s, I might be able to find a use for you... hmmm... you are quite pretty after all, for a human...” His smirk deepened, and a disturbing glint appeared in his metallic irises as they roved over her body. Tanya felt dread welling up inside her. She could only guess what the deplorable Giant’s intentions were, but the way he was inspecting her made her skin crawl. “I can keep you... perhaps as my pet. My personal assistant. You could indulge my every whim.” He ran his tongue over his teeth.
Tanya shuddered, and Mr. Wolfe chuckled. He set her down in his roomy palm, playing with her with his massive finger as she shirked away from him. “Yes, yes... I think I like this idea...”
“I-I don’t belong to you... let me go...” Tanya stammered. She was trying to be assertive, but her quavering voice betrayed her obvious fear. She tried to escape, but Mr. Wolfe easily pinched her shirt and dragged her back to the center of his gargantuan hand. She pulled on her shirt but couldn’t extricate it from his grasp. He chuckled again.
He opened his mouth to speak, but abruptly a strange expression crossed his face. His hands vibrated and smashed into the desk, displacing Tanya onto the surface. The Giant grabbed his stomach and doubled over with a groan of agony. Then, he exploded, splattering the walls, floor, desk, chair, and Tanya with blood and guts. His torso erupted like a volcano of gore as something huge ruptured out of him with a loud tearing sound, splitting through his flesh and skin. An impossibly large object, smothered with blood, collapsed out of his body onto the floor alongside chunks of meat and bodily fluids. What was left of Mr. Wolfe whimpered in pain before slumping over in the chair. A gaping, leaking hole had been blown out of his torso, shattering his bones and spine and damaging his other organs. There was no recovering from such an injury; he was dead.
Tanya wiped his blood off her face in shock. She leaned over the side of the desk, careful not to fall off, to gaze down below. The object that had blasted open Mr. Wolfe’s core was none other than a man. Upon closer inspection, Tanya recognized Leon, morphed back to his Giant size, but his whole body was drenched in red so she couldn’t tell if he was hurt. He wasn’t moving; she wasn’t sure if he was dead or just unconscious. She saw a smaller body shifting below, also soaked in scarlet. The human Mr. Wolfe had eaten. She was wracked with sobs, her limbs splayed out at unnatural angles.
“Oh my goodness! Little Debbie!” Tanya shouted when she discerned who was drowning underneath the mess.
“H-help me
” she choked. “I
 got crushed
 I’m
 broken
”
“R-right away!” Tanya stuttered. She raced into action by grabbing Candy’s phone and calling an ambulance. Once emergency services were on their way, she called Ronny. He was relieved to hear she was okay but horrified to hear that Leon might be dead when she briefly explained the situation. He skipped the elevator and sprinted up the stairs instead. When he arrived at the CEO’s office, he was winded.
“Tanya! Thank God you’re okay!” Ronny proclaimed, snatching her up off the desk. He sacrificed his shirt sleeve to wipe the blood off her tiny form.
“I’m fine. But Leon
” Tanya whined. Ronny bent down to check on him.
“He’s still breathing!” he announced. “He’s alive! But how?”
“I
I think it was the shrinking pill,” Tanya explained. She pointed up at the computer screen, hardly legible through the coating of blood. “According to this, the scientists were experimenting with combining the effects of the human pill and the shrinking pill together in the latest prototype. Mr. Wolfe must’ve failed to realize that Leon could survive his digestive juices when he ate him.”
“Damn,” Ronny breathed. “Leon got lucky he didn’t chew.”

who do you think is going to shine in the play? who do you think is going to flub it?
oh ho ho feeling nasty are we anon <3 but to be honest, i cannot speak against the swynlake summer play, a true town tradition! even the flubs shall be ICONIC! love a surprise, a costume malfunction, a late light or sound cue. that's what makes it all pop, sugar.
so i'm keeping it positive~ and predicting...
Ting Ting Qin will be the STAR. This is obvious. Her connection to Donna cannot be understated. A single mother (okay the harried guardian to two much younger sisters and one of them is Mei Qin who loves her yikes! moments), a sexy single, whose One True Love (John Darling) betrayed her or something (tbd) all those years (one) ago...! why yes, i think tonight swynlake will fall in love with Ms. Qin. I expect for her to be SHOWERED in roses.
Likewise, Reza will surprise everyone with a surprisingly robust baritone, and a performance that is as tender as it is challenging. I am hoping the sparks between himself and Ting Ting might ignite off-stage too!
As for our teen casts? Well, I have heard rumours that the MOST interesting casting decision of the year (Simba's choice of Pip as Tanya and Vanessa as Pepper) is NOT TO BE MISSED! Does Your Mother Know is bound to be a powerful LESBIAN showstopper! literally i am already so proud of those kids!
Meanwhile I'm hoping Tallulah's total girlboss moves as her Tanya might scare Martin's Pepper out of the closet. đŸ€

BDRPWriMo Task #28 - Closet
BDRPWriMo Task #28: Your character’s closet! Or, 15 iconic Franny Robinson outfits
1-4. Franny’s (four) wedding dresses
Cornelius and Franny’s wedding was heavily influenced by Cambodian wedding traditions. [read here and here, later I’ll post a full HC post about what Khmer traditions they followed and how, and which ones they forwent - like obviously Neil didn’t pay a dowry for Franny]
A traditional Cambodian wedding is comprised of many ceremonies, music, meals, gifts, and guests lasting for three days and three nights. Cambodians choose the number three because of its relation to “three jewels” of Buddhism: the Buddha, the Sangha, and the Dhamma. So Neil and Franny’s wedding ceremonies lasted three days, only family and close friends were invited to the majority of the ceremonies, with the Actual Wedding and reception happening on day three.
Neil paid for all of her mother’s surviving (post Khmer Rogue years) siblings and extended family to fly in from Cambodia if they’d remained there, or from the other countries they’d been resettled as refugees to. For some of her siblings and cousins, the lead up to the 2002 wedding was the first time Sophea “Sophie” had seen them since before the fall of Phnom Penh in April 1975.
They wore traditional Khmer wedding costume for all three days, but Franny changed into a Western style dress shortly after the first dance.

Day 3 - The Actual Wedding

Apart from her wedding, she has four aesthetics:
Stage
#vintage
Professional pencil skirts and pantsuits
Dress to DEPRESS
5. Nature Dress
Franny wore this nature scene dress when she accepted her most recent Grammy award.

6. “Who’s This Farmer’s-Wife-Lookin’ Girl?”
... was the first thought Atlanta Jazz Festival 2005 festival goers had when Franny Robinson stepped onstage in a dress and boots straight from her closet.
“I didn’t have things like stylists or sponsored outfits back then,” said Robinson in a 2014 interview. “I’d already made a bit of splash as far as songwriting went; by then I’d had full or partial credit for writing and-or composing twenty-two songs. Mind you, I’d only graduated from NYU with my Bachelors’ in ‘02, and finished my Masters’ in England in ‘04. But as a singer, I had only released an EP and featured on other singers’ tracks. I wasn’t, you know, Franny Robinson yet. The 2005 Atlanta Jazz Festival was the first in a series of test runs.”
When asked why the Atlanta Jazz Festival when she was already living in England at the time, Robinson answered, “Atlanta is my home. The jazz festival was one of my favorite things about growin’ up here, so I wanted to launch my music career here.”
To this day, the outfit remains one of the most iconic Franny Robinson looks. Instagram captions of fans wearing similar outfits often read “channeling my inner Franny Robinson today.”
Tumblr media
7. Baby Pink Cherries
In 2009, Franny and her lifelong friend and song-writing partner, bluegrass and folk singer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Maitland (fc: Martin Sensmeier), formed the duo Dara & Danny.
From an article:
Robinson and Maitland have known each other since middle school, when Maitland moved to her small town outside of Atlanta from Alaska. They started out as fiercely competitive rivals before Maitland proposed they marry their talents and begin playing music together. It was a match made in music heaven.
Even when Franny went to NYU and Daniel went to East Tennessee State [the only university with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Bluegrass, Old Time, and Country Music Studies, which he holds], they remained in steady contact and spent their summers at home playing and writing together. The first few years of their music careers were spent breaking into their respective primary fields - jazz music for Franny, bluegrass and folk for Daniel - and coming together to write music and lyrics for each other.
It was again Maitland who proposed they perform together, this time, professionally.
Dara & Danny, a duo made up of jazz musician and bluegrass musician, flirts with jazz music but is primarily influenced by bluegrass, folk, and indie rock a la Rilo Kiley.
“Dara & Danny is where I get to explore the music besides jazz that made me. I grew up in rural Georgia, bluegrass, country, folk music, that was all around me. And I loved it. I love all music,” Robinson said. “Like, I love hip-hop. My husband got a crash course in Outkast and the rest of the Atlanta hip-hop legends when we started seeing each other.”
The pink cherries dress was worn at the 2010 CMAs when Dara & Danny performed. They weren’t nominated for anything that year, but were super jazzed to have been invited to perform.
Dara & Danny, funnily enough, has been Franny’s most commercially successful project. Meaning, tracks have featured in movies, tv, and its what gets the most radio play. Her work in jazz is more highly critically acclaimed, and she is much more prolific with composing jazz music than anything else, but there are more people who first discover her through Dara & Danny that then find out she’s a world class jazz musician than the other way around.

8. Met Gala 2018
You know, the Catholic-themed one. She wore a dress depicting Adam and Eve.
Tumblr media
9. National BIcon Franny Robinson
Franny is known for not changing gender pronouns when she sings songs originally performed by men. Prior to her coming out as bisexual in 2017, Franny dodged the questions by simply saying, “That’s how the song was written.”
In 2018 she appeared in a 1940s aesthetic music video for a song by her friend, fellow jazz singer, and out lesbian Lora Lopez. Franny starred as her love interest. There was seduction, there was making out, there was stealing from men. It was so gay.
The ‘Making Of’ video is hilarious because Lora kept laughing every time she grabbed Franny and kissed her because the first time she grabbed Franny she was like “oh my god I’m sorry, was that too rough?” and without thinking Franny went “you’re good, I like it rough, you can make it real kinky and slap me if you want.” Because that’s the kind of jokes Franny makes. And for like five takes Lora could not stop laughing when she grabbed her and kissed her.

10. Seoul Hanoi’d at Glastonbury 2016
Franny’s second most active music project - apart from her constant solo work - after Dara & Danny is Seoul Hanoi’d, the best pun I have ever made in my life. She is a founding member and co-lead singer of the band. Seoul Hanoi’d is a genre-bending performance group entirely made up of Asian-diaspora singers and musicians whose main careers are in various genres.
[I’ll make a full hc post about Seoul Hanoi’d later, too!]
The name, a pun on ‘so annoyed’ comes from the capital of South Korea and a city in Vietnam. Seoul Hanoi’d currently consists ethnic Korean, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Malaysian, Indonesian, Mongolian, Kazakh, Chinese, Nepalese, and Thai diaspora who rotate out for live shows as their schedules permit. The "core” members are almost all at every performance. Of the core members, Franny is absent the most however, because of her wildly busy schedule. She has a hand in composing almost every original song, arranging most of the covers, writing a huge chunk of their lyrics, and is the common thread between most of the other musicians, so she is considered the leader of the group.
Franny wore this outfit during their set at Glastonbury 2016, their first year performing there.
Tumblr media
11. Swynlake Adult Prom 2019
The Gatsby-themed one? That was Franny’s JAM. She killed it with her art deco dress!
Tumblr media
12. Postmodern Jukebox
Franny’s been featured in a Postmodern Jukebox video, and wore this green velvet dress.
Tumblr media
13. Twinning Pink Ao Dai at a Vietnamese Festival with a Vietnamese Friend
The co-lead singer of Seoul Hanoi’d is a Vietnamese-American named Vanessa Pham. Franny and Vanessa met when they were students at NYU through their involvement with the university’s Asian Student Union. Franny, a jazz studies and musical theater performance double major from Georgia, and Vanessa, an engineering student from Texas, found that they had a lot in common.
They were both the only daughters of war refugees who came to the United States in the 1970s. They were both from the South. Franny even spoke Vietnamese almost as well as Vanessa, as she spent her first four years living with her mother in the home of a Vietnamese couple who’d taken her mother in when she was pregnant with her. In both Franny’s hometown in Georgia and Vanessa’s in Texas, the small Vietnamese and Cambodian diaspora groups were very interconnected, so each other’s culture was almost as familiar to them as their own.
They both liked to put bacon in their cheesy grits and put hot sauce on their rice when their moms weren’t looking. They both loved authentic Chinese food as much as the next self-respectin’ first-generation gal, but they also could put away some crab rangoons because cream cheese was truly king. They both could absolutely destroy their older brothers in a fight. They both knew all the worlds to every Dolly, Tanya Tucker, and Dixie Chicks song, but also found their parents’ old Khmer or Vietnamese music comforting.
Franny could count on one hand the number of other Cambodian students she’d met in her time at NYU, so even meeting Vietnamese Vanessa who knew how to order in hesitant, broken Khmer at the Cambodian restaurant they found was exciting. More than that, Vanessa was hilarious! And smart! And such a good, loyal friend. She had a hidden talent as a singer and wanted to do music like Franny, but her parents made her go into STEM for ‘job security.’
Vanessa graduated with her engineering degree and went on to get her masters’, but after working as an engineer for four years she quit to pursue music. It was shortly after she took the leap that Franny approached her to form Seoul Hanoi’d.
On Franny’s Instagram, there’s a picture of her and Vanessa wearing matching pink ao dai at a Vietnamese culture festival earlier in 2019 with the caption, “Thank you for sharing your beautiful voice, laughter, and culture with me for twenty years and counting!”
“What I love the most about Asian cultures is just how many of them there are.” Robinson said in a 2019 interview. “I love when my Desi friends are like ‘hey! be my plus one at this wedding!’ and they invite me to wear their traditional clothing while celebrating with them. I love learning new Vietnamese phrases from my friends. I’m always so honored when I’m invited to participate in my friends’ cultures, because I know when I invite somebody to Cambodian New Year events, or a traditional wedding, its because I trust them to appreciate this important part of me and participate respectfully. Our cultures are so diverse, and beautiful, and vibrant!”
There’s a similar picture of Vanessa and Franny together at a Cambodian New Year celebration, where Vanessa’s wearing traditional Khmer clothing with Franny.

14. Plaid Dress
Franny wore and performed in this dress at the 2011 International Bluegrass Music Awards when Dara & Danny won the New Artist of the Year, and Song of The Year.
Tumblr media
15. That Kickass Outfit
Franny wore this outfit when she attended and performed at the 2015 BRIT Awards, and won Best International Female Solo Artist.

How to watch, who’s performing, who was snubbed and more
CLOSE
Tumblr media
It’s already been a big year for 18-year-old Billie Eilish who was just announced to perform at the Grammy Awards and received 6 Grammy nominations.
USA TODAY
Brace yourself, Billie Eilish and Lizzo fans: The 2020 Grammy Awards are shaping up to be a big night.
The Grammys are quickly approaching, and this year’s ceremony looks like it’ll live up to its rep as “Music’s Biggest Night.”
Will “Bad Guy” singer Eilish come out on top? Will Lizzo leave feeling “Good As Hell” with trophies in hand? Will Lil Nas X land some wins, or will the “Old Town Road” rapper be left in the dust? Oh, and when is it again?
From the breakout nominees to the surprising snubs, here’s everything you need to know going into this year’s Grammys.
What time are the Grammys?
The show will broadcast live from Los Angeles’ Staples Center on Sunday, Jan. 26. It airs on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
How can I watch the Grammys on TV or online?
Well, if you have regular TV, on CBS. If you donïżœïżœïżœt, the show is available for streaming on CBS All Access and on live TV packages through services such as YouTube TV and Hulu live TV.
You can stream all the red carpet arrivals on Grammy.com.
Notable 2020 Grammy nominees
Lizzo received the most nominations – eight, including album (“Cuz I Love You”), record and song (“Truth Hurts”) of the year. She’s followed by Lil Nas X and Eilish, who are tied with six nods each. Artists with five nominations include Ariana Grande, H.E.R. and Finneas O’Connell.
Eilish, 18, joins Lizzo, 31, in the album of the year category with her genre-bending, critically acclaimed debut “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” The trend-setting teen, whose music has amassed more than 15 billion combined streams across platforms, is also up for record and song of the year for No. 1 hit “Bad Guy.” That makes her the youngest nominee in Grammy history to be nominated in all four major categories, according to the Recording Academy.

Lil Nas X, 20, whose real name is Montero Hill, is similarly up for best album with his eight-song debut “7.” “Old Town Road,” his country-rap collaboration with Billy Ray Cyrus that topped the charts for a record-breaking 19 consecutive weeks this summer, is nominated for best pop/duo group performance, and his follow-up single “Panini” is up for best rap/sung performance.
Grande’s five nods include record (“7 Rings”) and album of the year (“Thank U, Next”). The best album category is rounded out by Bon Iver’s “I, I,” Lana Del Rey’s “Norman F***ing Rockwell,” H.E.R.’s “I Used to Know Her” and Vampire Weekend’s “Father of the Bride.”

Who got snubbed?
Though this year’s nominations shined a light on new artists, established favorites, such as Taylor Swift and Bruce Springsteen, were left in the dark.
10-time Grammy winner Swift made history in 2016 by becoming the first female artist to win album of the year twice, for “1989” and “Fearless” (a feat managed a year later by Adele, with “25” and “21”). Swift’s Grammys streak has slowed: Her divisive “Reputation” earned just one nod in 2018 for best pop vocal album, and this year, she garnered only three nominations, including song of the year for “Lover.”
Her critically beloved album “Lover” failed to land a best album nod but showed up in best pop vocal album. Her pro-LGBTQ anthem “You Need to Calm Down” eked out a nomination for best pop solo performance but missed out on record of the year.

Similarly, 20-time winner Springsteen has been a reliable Grammy presence since 1984 and was honored in 2013 by the Recording Academy’s charity arm as MusiCares Person of the Year. The Boss returned this summer with the country-tinged “Western Stars,” which marked his first album of solo material since 2012’s “Wrecking Ball.” Voters didn’t welcome him back with open arms, snubbing “Western Stars” and Springsteen entirely.

Who’s hosting the Grammys?
After hosting the 2019 Grammys, Alicia Keys is back and ready to take on the gig for the second year in a row. With 15 Grammy wins, Keys is certainly qualified.
“It’s almost like a marathon: You can’t just run a marathon (once),” Keys said of her desire to host a second time. “I feel like now, more than ever, I’m familiar with the space on multiple levels. It’s going to be an exciting, inclusive, beautiful experience, and that’s what I want to create.”

Who’s performing?
This year’s Grammys should be a big night for Eilish and Lizzo, not just because of their nominations but also because they’ll each make their Grammys stage debuts.
Demi Lovato will also take the stage, marking her first live performance since she was hospitalized after a possible drug overdose in 2018.
“I told you the next time you’d hear from me I’d be singing,” Lovato wrote on Instagram Tuesday, along with the announcement.
Also returning to the show is Grande, who didn’t attend last year after a dispute with Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich.
Ehrlich will be honored in a tribute performance Sunday featuring artists involved in his 40-year career. Performers will include Camila Cabello, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper and Ben Platt, among others.
Power couple Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani will perform together at the show for the first time. Additionally, Billy Ray Cyrus, Lil Nas X, BTS, Diplo and more will join forces for an “Old Town Road All-Stars” performance.
Aerosmith, Run-D.M.C, Charlie Wilson, Bonnie Raitt, Camila Cabello, H.E.R., the Jonas Brothers, Rosalía and Tyler, The Creator will all also take the stage.
Sunday’s show will also pay tribute to rapper Nipsey Hussle, who was shot to death outside his Marathon clothing store in the South Los Angeles neighborhood where he was from in March 2019. DJ Khaled, John Legend, Roddy Ricch, Kirk Franklin, Meek Mill and YG will honor Hussle’s legacy with a performance. The late rapper is nominated for three awards this year including best rap song.
Who’s presenting?
Famous faces set to hand out the golden gramophones include Trevor Noah and Jim Gaffigan, who are both nominated for Best Comedy Album, as well as Brandi Carlile and Tanya Tucker, who are also set to perform.
Also presenting are previous Grammy winners Common, Cynthia Erivo, Dua Lipa, Billy Porter, Smokey Robinson, Shania Twain, Keith Urban and Stevie Wonder, as well as past Grammy nominees Ava DuVernay and Bebe Rexha.
Music industry titans Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne will also hand out trophies.
How are the Grammy Awards different this year?
This year’s Grammys will have more women, people of color and young people choosing who wins.
Responding to criticism that the awards show has lacked diversity among nominees and winners, the Recording Academy invited 900 members to join the voting body, emphasizing women, people of color and those under the age of 39, or some combination of the three.
Who will be honored at Grammy Awards events?
Grammys fun kicks off way before the main awards show begins.
One of the most famous lead-up events is record producer Clive Davis’ star-studded pre-Grammys gala, held this year on the Saturday night before the show.

By now, most of you know that I’m a connoisseur of ABC’s The View and CBS’s The Talk – two daytime gabfests hosted by quintets of opinionated women from various celebrity walks-of-life.  When they open up their daily discussion topics to receive feedback from at-home viewers, I view it as an exercise in contributing to social commentary and pop culture.
The following are statements made by me over social media throughout the last two-and-a-half months, retweeted by the shows’ producers.  Following my “Spring 2017 Edition,” here are 103 tweets of mine – disseminated through my Twitter handle of @eichy815 – displayed in front of millions of other Americans who also enjoy The Talk and The View.  The text of each of my tweets, as each one of them had appeared in front of a national television audience, is denoted in bold.
The first 11 are my tweets broadcast by The View during this two-month period.

Women’s History Month began as a week-long celebration by in Sonoma, California in 1978 which was centered around International Women’s Day on March 8. A year later during a women’s history conference at Sarah Lawrence College, participants learned how successful the week was and decided to initiate similar in their own areas. President Carter issued the first proclamation for a national Women’s History Week in 1980. In 1987, Congress (after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project) passed Pub. L. 100-9 designating March as Women’s History Month. U.S. Presidents have issued proclamations on Women’s History Month since 1988.
Here at the UCF Libraries, we have created a list of suggested (and favorite) books about women’s history in both fact and fiction. Please click on the read more link below to see the full list with descriptions and catalog links.
Almost Astronauts: 13 Women Who Dared to Dream by Tanya Lee Stone What does it take to be an astronaut? Excellence at flying, courage, intelligence, resistance to stress, top physical shape, any checklist would include these. But when America created NASA in 1958, there was another unspoken rule: you had to be a man. Here is the tale of thirteen women who proved that they were not only as tough as the toughest man but also brave enough to challenge the government. They were blocked by prejudice, jealousy, and the scrawled note of one of the most powerful men in Washington. But even though the Mercury 13 women did not make it into space, they did not lose, for their example empowered young women to take their place in the sky, piloting jets and commanding space capsules.  Suggested by Jamie LaMoreaux, Acquisitions & Collections
Enter Helen: the invention of Helen Gurley Brown and the rise of the modern single woman by Brooke Hauser Chronicles the rise of a cultural icon who redefined what it means to be an American woman. In 1965, Helen Gurley Brown, author of the groundbreaking bestseller Sex and the Single Girl, took over an ailing Cosmopolitan and soon revamped it into one of the most bankable--and revolutionary--brands on the planet. At a time when women's magazines taught housewives how to make the perfect casserole, Helen spoke directly to the single girl next door, cheekily advising her on how to pursue men, money, power, pleasure, and, most of all, personal happiness. Bringing New York City vibrantly to life during the sexual revolution and the women's movement, and featuring a rich cast of characters, including Hugh Hefner and Gloria Steinem, Enter Helen is the riveting story of a polarizing pioneer who bucked convention to define her own destiny, baiting a generation that both revered and rejected her. Suggested by Richard Harrison, Subject Librarian
Fight like a Girl: How to be a Fearless Feminist by Megan Seely Fight Like A Girl offers a fearless vision for the future of feminism. By boldly detailing what is at stake for women and girls today, Megan Seely outlines the necessary steps to achieve true political, social and economic equity for all. Reclaiming feminism for a new generation, Fight Like A Girl speaks to young women who embrace feminism in substance but not necessarily in name. Suggested by Mary Rubin, Special Collections & University Archives
Flow: The Cultural Story of Menstruation by Elissa Stein Flow spans its fascinating, occasionally wacky and sometimes downright scary story: from mikvahs (ritual cleansing baths) to menopause, hysteria to hysterectomies - not to mention the Pill, cramps, the history of underwear, and the movie about puberty they showed you in 5th grade. Suggested by Megan Haught, Teaching & Engagement/Research & Information Services
Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution by Sara Marcus Girls to the Front is the epic, definitive history of Riot Grrrl—the radical feminist uprising that exploded into the public eye in the 1990s and included incendiary punk bands Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, Heavens to Betsy, and Huggy Bear. A dynamic chronicle not just a movement but an era, this is the story of a group of pissed—off girls with no patience for sexism and no intention of keeping quiet. Suggested by Carrie Moran, User Engagement Librarian
Juliette Gordon Low : the remarkable founder of the Girl Scouts by Stacy A. Cordery In celebration of the Girl Scouts' centennial, this biography is a salute to its maverick founder. Born at the start of the Civil War, Juliette Gordon Low grew up in Georgia, where she struggled to reconcile being a good Southern belle with her desire to run barefoot through the fields. Deafened by an accident, "Daisy" married a dashing British aristocrat and moved to England. But she was ultimately betrayed by her husband and dissatisfied by the aimlessness of privileged life. Her search for a greater purpose ended when she met Robert Baden-Powell, war hero, adventurer, and founder of the Boy Scouts. Captivated with his program, Daisy aimed to instill the same useful skills and moral values in young girls, with an emphasis on fun. She imported the Boy Scouts' sister organization, the Girl Guides, to Savannah in 1912. Rechristened the Girl Scouts, it grew rapidly because of her unquenchable determination and energetic, charismatic leadership. In this biography, the author paints a dynamic portrait of an intriguing woman and a true pioneer whose work touched the lives of millions of girls and women around the world. Suggested by Richard Harrison, Subject Librarian
Letters to Alice on First Reading Jane Austen by Fay Weldon Alternating between passages from Jane Austen’s novels and accounts of her own career, Weldon reveals the connections between art and life, and charts Alice’s trajectory from unpublished writer to celebrated author, her success ultimately outstripping that of her famous “aunt.” Letters to Alice puts Austen’s works into a contemporary perspective as it explores the craft of writing fiction, the pitfalls of publishing too early, the conventions that stifle the creative impulse, and more. In paying tribute to Austen, Weldon opens an illuminating window onto reading, writing, and why literature matters. Suggested by Jamie LaMoreaux, Acquisitions & Collections
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott Lovely Meg, talented Jo, frail Beth, spoiled Amy: these are hard lessons of poverty and of growing up in New England during the Civil War. Through their dreams, plays, pranks, letters, illnesses, and courtships, women of all ages have become a part of this remarkable family and have felt the deep sadness when Meg leaves the circle of sisters to be married at the end of Part I. Part II, chronicles Meg's joys and mishaps as a young wife and mother, Jo's struggle to become a writer, Beth's tragedy, and Amy's artistic pursuits and unexpected romance. Based on Louise May Alcott's childhood, this lively portrait of nineteenth-century family life possesses a lasting vitality that has endeared it to generations of readers. Suggested by Cindy Dancel, Research & Information Services
Mercury 13: the true story of thirteen women and the dream of space flight by Martha Ackmann In 1961, just as NASA launched its first man into space, a group of women underwent secret testing in the hopes of becoming America's first female astronauts. They passed the same battery of tests at the legendary Lovelace Foundation as did the Mercury 7 astronauts, but they were summarily dismissed by the boys' club at NASA and on Capitol Hill. The USSR sent its first woman into space in 1963; the United States did not follow suit for another twenty years. In addition to talking extensively to these women, Ackmann interviewed Chuck Yeager, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, and others at NASA and in the White House with firsthand knowledge of the program, and includes here never-before-seen photographs of the Mercury 13 passing their Lovelace tests. Despite the crushing disappointment of watching their dreams being derailed, the Mercury 13 went on to extraordinary achievement in their lives: Jerrie Cobb dedicated her life to flying solo missions to the Amazon rain forest; Wally Funk went on to become one of the first female FAA investigators; Janey Hart had the political savvy to steer the women through congressional hearings and later helped found the National Organization for Women. Suggested by Jamie LaMoreaux, Acquisitions & Collections
My Life, My Love, My Legacy by Coretta Scott King The life story of Coretta Scott King--wife of Martin Luther King Jr., founder of the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change, and singular twentieth-century American civil rights activist--as told fully for the first time, toward the end of her life, to one of her closest friends. Coretta's is a love story, a family saga, and the memoir of an independent-minded black woman in twentieth-century America, a brave leader who stood committed, proud, forgiving, nonviolent, and hopeful in the face of terrorism and violent hatred every single day of her life. Suggest by Missy Murphey, Subject Librarian
My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem Gloria Steinem had an itinerant childhood. Every fall, her father would pack the family into the car and they would drive across the country, in search of their next adventure. The seeds were planted: Steinem would spend much of her life on the road, as a journalist, organizer, activist, and speaker. In vivid stories that span an entire career, Steinem writes about her time on the campaign trail, from Bobby Kennedy to Hillary Clinton; her early exposure to social activism in India, and the decades spent organizing ground-up movements in America; the taxi drivers who were "vectors of modern myths" and the airline stewardesses who embraced the feminist revolution; and the infinite, surprising contrasts, the "surrealism in everyday life" that Steinem encountered as she traveled back and forth across the country. Suggested by Carrie Moran, User Engagement Librarian
Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers by Lillian Faderman As Lillian Faderman writes, there are "no constants with regard to lesbianism," except that lesbians prefer women. In this groundbreaking book, she reclaims the history of lesbian life in twentieth-century America, tracing the evolution of lesbian identity and subcultures from early networks to more recent diverse lifestyles. She draws from journals, unpublished manuscripts, songs, media accounts, novels, medical literature, pop culture artifacts, and oral histories by lesbians of all ages and backgrounds, uncovering a narrative of uncommon depth and originality. Suggested by Missy Murphey, Subject Librarian
Olivia by Dorothy Strachey Captures the awakening passions of an adolescent girl sent away for a year to a small finishing school outside Paris, where she develops an infatuation for her headmistress. Although not strictly autobiographical, Olivia draws on the author’s experiences at finishing schools run by the charismatic Mlle. Marie Souvestre, whose influence lived on through former students like Natalie Barney and Eleanor Roosevelt. Olivia was dedicated to the memory of Strachey’s friend Virginia Woolf and published to acclaim in 1949. In 1999, Olivia was included on the Publishing Triangle’s widely publicized list of the 100 Best Gay and Lesbian Novels of the 20th Century. Suggested by Megan Haught, Teaching & Engagement/Research & Information Services
Olivia by Ian Falconer A new and unexpected heroine emerges with the irresistible Olivia. Olivia is a spunky little pig with an abundance of energy and enthusiasm. Her daily activities of singing the loudest of songs, creating art on walls, and building skyscrapers do not tire her in the least. Rather, when it is time for bed, she asks for a plethora of books to be read! Olivia's mom, on the other hand, is drained. Parents and kids alike will marvel at Olivia's abounding energy and her mom's abounding patience and love. Suggested by Susan MacDuffee, Acquisitions & Collections
Queen Victoria: A Personal History by Christopher Hibbert The unearthing of lively, telling anecdotes is the special province of Christopher Hibbert, who delights in forcing readers, in the most entertaining way, to reassess all their notions about some of the world's most intriguing historical figures. His biography of Victoria is no exception. We learn in these pages that not only was she the formidable, demanding, capricious Queen of popular imagination, but she was also often shy and vulnerable, prone to giggling fits and crying jags. Often puritanical and censorious when confronted with her mother's moral lapses, she herself could be passionately sensual, emotional, and deeply sentimental. Her 64-year reign saw thrones fall, empires crumble, new continents explored, and England's rise to global and industrial dominance. Hibbert's account of Victoria's life and times is just as sweeping as he reveals to us the real Victoria in all her complexity: failed mother and imperious monarch, irrepressible woman and icon of a repressive age. Suggested by Peggy Nuhn, Regional Librarian
Rise of the Rocket Girls: The Women Who Propelled Us, from Missiles to the Moon to Mars by Nathalia Holt In the 1940s and 50s, when the newly minted Jet Propulsion Laboratory needed quick-thinking mathematicians to calculate velocities and plot trajectories, they didn't turn to male graduates. Rather, they recruited an elite group of young women who, with only pencil, paper, and mathematical prowess, transformed rocket design, helped bring about the first American satellites, and made the exploration of the solar system possible.  Suggested by Megan Haught, Teaching & Engagement/Research & Information Services
Savage Beauty: The Life of Edna St. Vincent Millay by Nancy Mitford If F. Scott Fitzgerald was the hero of the Jazz Age, Edna St. Vincent Millay, as audacious in her love affairs as she was in her art, was its heroine. She embodied, in her reckless fancy, the spirit of the New Woman, and gave America its voice. Nancy Milford was given exclusive access to Millay's papers, and what she found was an unimaginable treasure. Hundreds of letters flew back and forth between the three sisters and their mother - and Millay kept the most intimate diary, one whose ruthless honesty brings to mind the journals of Sylvia Plath. Suggested by Larry Cooperman, Research & Information Services
When God Was a Woman by Merlin Stone Documents the ancient worship of the great creator Mother Goddess under a diversity of names and details the rewriting of myths, the recasting of rituals and religious doctrines, and the transformation of the Goddess into a wanton, depraved figure by invading patriarchal tribes. Suggested by Megan Haught, Teaching & Engagement/Research & Information Services
Women in early America: Struggle, survival and freedom in a New World by Dorothy Mays "Women in Early America: Struggle, Survival, and Freedom in a New World "provides insight into an era in American history when women had immense responsibilities and unusual freedoms. The coverage begins with the 1607 settlement at Jamestown and ends with the War of 1812. In addition to the role of Anglo-American women, the experiences of African, French, Dutch, and Native American women are discussed. The issues discussed include how women coped with rural isolation, why they were prone to superstitions, who was likely to give birth out of wedlock, and how they raised large families while coping with immense household responsibilities. Suggested by Peggy Nuhn, Regional Librarian
You Learn by Living: Eleven Keys for a More Fulfilling Life by Eleanor Roosevelt Eleanor Roosevelt, one of the world’s best loved and most admired public figures, offers a wise and intimate guide on how to overcome fears, embrace challenges as opportunities, and cultivate civic pride: You Learn by Living. A crucial precursor to better-living guides like Mark Nepo’s The Book of Awakening or Robert Persig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, as well as political memoirs such as John F. Kennedy’s Profiles in Courage, the First Lady’s illuminating manual of personal exploration resonates with the timeless power to change lives. Suggested by Carrie Moran, User Engagement Librarian

'He totally said it' or 'complete BS'? Sanders and Warren voters dig in

'He totally said it' or 'complete BS'? Sanders and Warren voters dig in
Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. | Scott Olson/Getty Images
DES MOINES, Iowa — Every Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders supporter seems to have an opinion on their infamous Dec. 2018 meeting.
One side believes Warren’s account that Sanders told her a woman couldn’t beat Donald Trump:“He totally said it! Women are watching, Bernie.”The other is just as convinced she embellished or lied for political advantage:“We obviously know that it was complete BS.”
Interviews with more than two dozen voters at events for Sanders and Warren last weekend made clear that the hard feelings between the two progressive icons have extended to their supporters. The situation has injected a volatile mix of gender politics and alleged sexism into the final weeks of the campaign, and added another layer of uncertainty to a primary where any number of outcomes remain possible.
Despite Warren and Sanders’ attempts to move on, the fight’s aftermath poses risks for both candidates — potentially hurting Sanders’ standing with female voters and undermining Warren’s attempt to portray herself as the candidate best equipped to unite the party.Even though many voters expressed a desire to move forward, the interviews show that the collision has at least temporarily colored the opinions each candidate’s supporters have of the other.
Many Sanders voters see a cynically orchestrated hit piece by Warren or her allies to save her candidacy and hurt Sanders in the final stretch of the campaign, coming more than a year after the meeting took place.
“I mean, it was a mugging,” Kurt Ehrenberg, who served as Sanders’ New Hampshire political director in 2016 and left his 2020 campaign earlier this year, said of the dispute. He added it caught the Sanders campaign flat-footed: “They didn’t have a good plan to deal with it clearly, except to react angrily, and that was the wrong way to react.”
“I think she feels she’s slipping and losing a little momentum and she’s a little bit frightened by that,” Sanders backer Dale Howard of Nashua, N.H. said after a town hall the candidate held on Saturday. “I can’t imagine him saying it.”
Or as Kristine Acevedo, a 48-year-old Boston activist who traveled to Exeter to see Sanders at a town hall, put it, “We obviously know that it was complete BS.”
Several people supporting or strongly considering Warren, however, see a stubborn man defensively insisting he said nothing wrong and trying to paint Warren as either oversensitive or a liar.
“I would have rather him said: it was wrong of me to ever give you that impression. Boom. Done,” said Tanya Keith, 48, who works in historic preservation in Des Moines and attended a Planned Parenthood event with Warren on Saturday. Her reaction to the back-and-forth: “He totally said it! Women are watching, Bernie.”
“I know what men say to us in rooms and then what they say to us in person to gaslight us, and I just want you to know that I believe you 100 percent,” Keith told Warren during the event, prefacing her question about uniting the party for the general election. She hasn’t decided whom to support but is seriously considering Warren.
“I believe her, just put it that way,” said Brian Guillaume, 32, who works for Iowa House Democrats and is leaning toward supporting Warren. “As the father of two daughers with a wife who sees how misogyny works, the way she looked at the debate, you could tell she seemed shocked when he denied it.”
For Alison Ver Schuer, a staffer for Democrats in the Iowa statehouse, it boils down to this: “Believe women. Just believe women.”
The irreconcilable nature of the two accounts — and why the issue may linger with voters — was highlighted when Warren confronted Sanders on stage after last week’s debate. “I think you called me a liar on national TV,” she said. After initially suggesting they talk about the matter another time, Sanders shot back: “You called me a liar.”
Since then, both candidates have tried to get past it. “I have said all I’m going to say on this. You can keep asking the question, but I’m not going to make an additional comment,” Warren told reporters Friday in Newton, Iowa, a sentiment she repeated again Sunday in Des Moines. The two candidates also marched together, arms locked, in South Carolina on Monday ahead of a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event at Zion Baptist Church.
Sanders has mostly declined to commented, too, but the fraught politics was highlighted Sunday when he seemed to equate the obstacles female candidates to the his own challenge running at 78 years old. “I think everybody has their own sets of problems,” he said. Many Warren supporters saw his remarks as evidence that he likely did tell Warren a woman couldn’t beat Trump.
Passionate supporters and even some campaign surrogates have also kept the argument alive.
“Meaningful progressive unity also should include meaningful accountability — Bernie Sanders, his campaign owe Sen. Warren, her campaign & supporters an apology for accusing her of bad faith lying, unspeakable online abuse before we talk unity,” Murshed Zaheed, a Democratic strategist who supports Warren, wrote on Twitter.
Victoria Dooley, a Sanders surrogate, also weighed in on Twitter. “When I lie on my good friend I always make sure it’s a year after the fact, and only once they’re hammering me in the polls, she wrote sacastically. “But that’s just me.”

I upped my reading list this year by 50 books.
I have no idea what I was thinking, honestly.
Actually, I do. I got a little overzealous after upping my goal last year by 50 books and reading 10 more books than I’d challenged myself to.
200 books. That’s how many I thought I could read this year. And, surprisingly, I’m actually pretty much on schedule to reach that goal.
Below are the books I’m likely going to reach for to finish up my goal. Many of them are the shortest books that are currently on my bookshelf, the shortest audiobooks that are in my Audible Library already, and a few highly anticipated books I picked up recently on Kindle.
Bloom by Kevin Panetta, Savanna Ganicheau
Now that high school is over, Ari is dying to move to the big city with his ultra-hip band―if he can just persuade his dad to let him quit his job at their struggling family bakery. Though he loved working there as a kid, Ari cannot fathom a life wasting away over rising dough and hot ovens. But while interviewing candidates for his replacement, Ari meets Hector, an easygoing guy who loves baking as much as Ari wants to escape it. As they become closer over batches of bread, love is ready to bloom . . . that is, if Ari doesn’t ruin everything.
Writer Kevin Panetta and artist Savanna Ganucheau concoct a delicious recipe of intricately illustrated baking scenes and blushing young love, in which the choices we make can have terrible consequences, but the people who love us can help us grow.

Georgie loves planning children’s birthday parties and making people laugh, just not at her own expense. She’s determined to fix herself up into a Woman of the World
 whatever that means.

STEP 1: Decide on a FC you wish to create resources for! You can always do more than one but who are you starting with? There are links to masterlists you can use in order to find them and if you want help, just send us a message and we can pick one for you at random!
STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNG’s, fancasts, alternative FC’s - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didn’t use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.
THINGS YOU CAN MAKE FOR THIS TASK -  examples are linked!
Stumped for ideas? Maybe make a masterlist or graphic of your favourite faceclaims. A masterlist of names. Plot ideas or screencaps from a music video preformed by an artist. Masterlist of quotes and lyrics that can be used for starters, thread titles or tags. Guides on culture and customs.

‘Dwarf Fortress’ Is Abandoning Its Text-Based Graphics, but Not Its Soul
Dwarf Fortress is a hard game to classify. It’s part simulation, part RPG, and part rogue-like. It generates a 2D world and tasks the player with managing a fortress and helping its dwarves survive. There are goblins, gods, mysteries, quests, geese, drinking, cats, and more, and all these elements can interact in unpredictable ways. After one update, players began to notice cats padding around drunk and vomiting. The update had added taverns for the dwarves, which led to spilled beer, which cats walked through. Later, when the cats clean themselves, they imbibed the alcohol and got drunk. That’s how deep the simulation gets.
But players had to imagine the cat vomit because Dwarf Fortress is rendered entirely in ASCII—a vast fantasy world created with less graphical fidelity than you’ll find in a Word Document. There’s nothing that looks or plays quite like it. Now, that’s changing.
For 15 years, Bay 12 Games gave away Dwarf Fortressthe game for free and supported development through donations and a Patreon. On March 13, Bay 12 Games announced it would begin selling Dwarf Fortress through Steam and Itch.io. Selling the game isn’t the only radical change—the Steam version of Dwarf Fortress would abandon its iconic ASCII art style in favor of a 2D tileset.
The unique ASCII art style defined the game for the better part of two decades. Moving away from the iconic look will change the game but it might change it for the better. Developer Tarn Adams, (who founded Bay 12 games with his brother Zach) wants to give Dwarf Fortress to a whole new group of people. The Adams brothers teamed up with developer Kitfox Games (the studio behind Shrouded Isle) and its own modding community to update Dwarf Fortress’ art style without abandoning its soul.
In fact, Adams thinks that the 2D change presents unique opportunities to make the game more accessible and fix legacy issues with Dwarf Fortress.
“ASCII is not purely an aesthetic choice. It is restrictive,” Adams told me over the phone.
According to Adams, the decision to use ASCII in the first place was pure happenstance.“[ Dwarf Fortress] started as an ASCII game called Mutant Miner
it was supposed to be this little throwaway game.”
But Mutant Miner kept evolving. Bay 12 Games kept adding elements, tweaking it, and eventually realized its simple turn-based game about mining had turned into a procedurally generated real-time strategy simulation. They kept the ASCII style because working with it was fast. They effectively didn’t have to worry about art.
“We released in ASCII and kept working in ASCII for that reason—the development was so fast and we were not qualified to draw,” Adams said.
As Bay 12 Games continued to develop Dwarf Fortress, it ran up against the limitations of that choice. There’s only 128 ASCII characters to choose from, which is why a goose, a goblin, and a gremlin all use the same letter—a lowercase g. “Even with color, I’ve run into overlaps now,” Adams said. He pointed out a six pointed star which Dwarf Fortress uses for a turtle, a campfire, and a gem. Adams said he thinks Bay 12 Games has used the six sided star for 15 different objects.
Adams is conscious that, while ASCII has its limitations, there’s something iconic about the art style. He knows that leaving ASCII behind will change the game, but he still wants to preserve its soul.
“In some sense, it’s not possible,” Adams said. “It really is a distinct look. At the same time, the people that we’ve brought on to make the tileset have both been with the community for ten years each. They’re modders. They dig it. They really understand the game.”
Bay 12 Games partnered with developer Kitfox Games. Kitfox Games’ Creative Director Tanya Short brought on Dwarf Fortress modders Mike “Mayday” Madej and Patrick “Meph” Martin Schroeder to build the tileset for the Steam release. “I’m really happy with the dwarf that Mayday Mike drew,” Adams said. “It has a harrowed look to it, it’s not a happy little Snow White dwarf. These poor dwarves. They don’t know what to expect. I’m super happy with how this is going.”
But the 2D facelift isn’t just about changing the art style, it’s about opening the game up to more people, making it accessible, and fixing legacy issues.
“All of the accessibility questions for Dwarf Fortress are on the table,” Adams said. “We’re going to look at the interface and the menu structure and common problems that new players have that make them bounce off the game.”
One of the big issues Adams is hoping to tackle is topography. Dwarf Fortress allows players to build a fortress with multiple levels and that’s hard to navigate in ASCII. In its current form, players move between layers of the game individually and have to keep track of the whole fortress in their mind. It’s like leafing through pages of a book. With some clever shading techniques, it’s easier to create a multi-leveled fortress in a 2D space.
“Before, when I had 16 colors, I couldn’t do that,” Adams said. “If the lower level is a darker green, well, there’s only one darker green available, and it might clash with some of the darker green stuff that’s above. And then you can’t tell what’s up and what’s down. It’s just confusing.”
Adams also pointed out that the ASCII art style alienated a number of different potential players. People with color blindness and dyslexia had a hard time picking up the game. Dwarf Fortress uses color to distinguish between creatures—a goblin and a goose are both the letter “g” but the colors are slightly different variants of white. If you can’t see color, you can’t tell the difference.
Adams is excited for the future of Dwarf Fortress, but he knows some people will always love the ASCII original. “There’s a crew of ASCII people who really liked the fact that like, a dragon is a capital D, because then they can imagine the dragon, that’s been in their mind their whole life,” he said. “Now we’ll have a great looking dragon, but it’ll have more properties that are assigned to it by the artist rather than the player. That’s the trade off.”
But Bay 12 Games isn’t abandoning the ASCII version of Dwarf Fortress. It plans to keep updating the game with more unicode pages (an enhanced superset of ASCII) and design tweaks and every copy sold on Steam and Itch.io will come with the ASCII version. “Everyone everywhere can experience [Dwarf Fortress] the the way they want to experience it.”
