Whether kids can afford all the "stuff" that goes along with Barbie is still a dividing issue today. The basic doll itself is reasonable priced, but the clothes, accessories, and bigger items such as houses and can add up quickly. And there is no end to them. There is always another outfit to buy for Barbie. The consumerism related to the doll is over the top, making her accessible mainly to the upper-middle class. Of course, that's what companies do- create a product that is popular and continue to expand upon the things customers can buy for it. But what does it say about the materialism? Is having a lot of things supposed to make us happy?

Suddenly I am very glad I went a little overboard on that "queer your bookshelf" sale at the start of the month. It looks like the train I am taking to Portland doesn't have WiFi if the online data is still accurate.
I haven't read any beyond a couple pages yet but still thought it might interest some. Caution most fall on the adult side. A couple are on the darker side(I tried to note them but again haven't read them yet and might have missed some). And tend to be sci-fi/fantasy.
Tidal Wave by E.M. Lindsey (Motorcycle Club/Gang)
For Real: An M/Mx Romance by R.A. Frick (BDSM)
Double Crossed: A Why Choose Military Romance by Adora Crooks
Stumptown Spirits by E.J. Russell
T.A.G. You're Seen by D.G. Carothers (BDSM/Kink)
Rough Sketchers by MJ Green (Mafia)
Soulmates by Liv Rancourt
Wormwood Summer by Kai Butler
Silent Truth by Samuel York
Acoustics by London Price
Changing His Tune by Blake Allwood

no love for ned is on wlur from 8pm until midnight tonight and i hope you can join us.
i just realized i'm starting off the show tonight with a song from the spinanes who i was introduced to almost exactly thirty years ago. they opened for the afghan whigs at the famed city gardens (jon stewart was a bartender there in the eighties!) on april 8th, 1994. i remember the exact date because it was the day kurt cobain's body was found. the radio announced it that afternoon while we were in the car. i know there was a lot of talking about it that night, especially since both bands were on sub pop (where nirvana got their start). not sure i have much else to say- just a memory that was prompted by a band and date.
anyway, i've also archived last week's show on mixcloud for you to catch whenever you'd like if you're busy tonight!
no love for ned on wlur – march 22nd, 2024 from 8-10pm

Quote
There is no one way for a doll to represent women as a whole. It would be an insurmountable task for any company to do that. We come in too many different packages and live lives too varied for any doll to capture us- as it should be.

What's Here Wednesday: Hidden History: War
Welcome to the first in a series of posts called "Hidden History"!
This set will run throughout the academic year as one of the many series included under "What's Here Wednesday." It features books in the TMC on stories that are typically silenced. Many events and people have been left out of the mainstream, often because they are from an oppressed group. These stories generally aren't featured in the main curricula in schools at all, or are quickly rushed over in favor of other topics. Fortunately, authors and publishers out there have shed light on these diverse, "hidden" aspects of history.
The first of these features are the unknown people who made contributions during wartime. From Native American codetalkers, to the Tuskegee Airmen (Black World War II pilots) or Harlem Hellfighters (African American World War I regiment) or the Triple Nickels (first Black paratroopers), people of color have taken valorous actions to be commended. There are also other less known stories, often about individuals, such as the transgender Civil War soldier, Albert D. J. Cashier, or the black Revolutionary War spy James Lafayette.
You can find these books (pictured above), or go explore more, in the Teaching Materials Center:
Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac
The Harlem Hellfighters by Walter Dean Myers
Courage Has No Color by Tanya Lee Stone
The Fighting Infantryman by Rob Sanders
Black, Blue & Gray by James Haskins
You Can Fly by Carole Boston Weatherford
Chester Nez and the Unbreakable Code by Joseph Bruchac
A Spy Called James by Anne Rockwell

Comic Book Saturday
This was a cool book about the women in space. From the first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova, to NASA’s Group 9, and just all the awesome women who went past our atmosphere.
I also really loved the art in this by Maris Wicks, from Massachusetts, whoop, whoop!! Oh, and, I can’t forget that there’s also some… let’s go with really fun to read discussion, on some of the designs of spacecraft as well. Awesome.
You may like this book If you Liked: Almost Astronauts by Tanya Lee Stone, Space Explorers by Libby Jackson, or Moonshot by Brian Floca
Astronauts: Women on the Final Frontier by Jim Ottaviani

Just the ENDS! -a look at endpapers created for many of my picture books
Not every one of the 38 picture books I’ve illustrated to date have end papers art included… perhaps only about a third do. (usually it’s a publisher’s budgetary issue) But when the publisher does give the green light on a picture book project to include the end papers, I’m thrilled! It’s always fun and challenging to devise and create a thematic pattern reflecting the subject and feel of the story.
Posted here are some endpapers I’ve created over the years for various picture books:
^ above: endpapers from, Wild Child -written & illustrated by Steven Salerno -August 2015 Abrams Books for Young Readers. (gouache & digital)
^ above: endpapers from, Wild Horse Annie Friend of the Mustangs (nonfiction) written by Tracey Fern & illustrated by Steven Salerno - April 2019 by Farrar Straus Giroux. (gouache & digital)
^ above: endpapers from, The Secret Code Inside You -all about your DNA (nonfiction) written by Rajani LaRocca, MD & illustrated by Steven Salerno -Released in 2021 by Little Bee Books. (digital)
^ above: endpapers from, Pantaloon -written by Kathryn Jackson & illustrated by Steven Salerno -March 2010 Golden Books/Random House. (gouache & digital)
^ above: endpapers from, Love from MADELINE -written by John Bemelmans Marciano & illustrated by Steven Salerno (in the style of the creator of MADELINE, Ludwig Bemelmans) Released in Jan 2022 by Viking Books for Young Readers (Penguin-Random House) (gouache & digital)
^ above: endpapers from, PRIDE The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag (nonfiction) written by Rob Sanders & illustrated by Steven Salerno -April 2018 by Random House. (digital)
