I started Afterlove by Tanya Byrne last night, cuz apparently the only genre holding my attention this month is YA romance, and it's cool. But the author made a choice with the story structure, and the choice is making me bored.
Basically, Ashana meets and falls in love with a girl. She's a fall fast, fall hard person, and I can see people bitching about insta-love, but imo I think insta-love can be done right and it is realistic. Some people are just Like That (I know, I'm one such person.) The story opens with Ashana dead and doing her new job as a Reaper. Then we switch to the last few months she was alive, and the author is really beating into the reader's head how in love she is, how she can finally see her future, how excited for that future she is, etc.
The goal (I assume) is to make it a lot more painful when she dies, or have that underlying sense of dread knowing that none of this will happen. But because we open the story with her already dead, this doesn't feel nearly as impactful as it would if we didn't know she was going to die. And it's going on and on to the point that I've been skimming the last like 15 pages. We're mostly in her head with some breaks for dialogue, so it's like "okay okay I get it, can we move on with the plot now?" And I understand and appreciate the author wanting to establish their relationship thoroughly before yanking it away, then bringing Poppy (the girlfriend) back in, but please. It's been 116 pages. As bad as this sounds, I'm ready for her to die. I'm ready for the next stage of the plot.
I do genuinely like this book, but it's dragging in the depths of the main character's introspection. I want the Reaper part of the story to start!
Speaking of Reapers, I also started The Keeper of Night by Kylie Lee Baker. Got about 20 pages in before I had to put it down. The combination of the MCs cruelty toward dying humans + the very descriptive cruelty and violent abuse she faced at the hands of other Reapers because she's biracial was so much all at once, and I needed something a little softer. I'll revisit it when I can handle that.

We have three books on our radar this week! Which ones have caught your eye?
The Worst Ronin written by Maggie Tokuda-Hall and illustrated by Faith Schaffer HarperAlley
Being a samurai isn’t easy. Sixteen-year-old Chihiro Ito knows that more than anyone. Her father is renowned among the samurai, but the only thing Chihiro is known for is spending way too much time on her phone obsessing over Tatsuo Nakano, Chihiro’s idol and the first woman to be accepted into Kesi Academy, a prestigious samurai school. So, when Chihiro’s father is conscripted for service and the opportunity arises to work with Tatsuo in his stead, Chihiro jumps at the chance to prove that she’s worthy of a spot at Kesi Academy and the samurai title. Their mission: kill the yamauba demon terrorizing a village. With a legendary samurai like Tatsuo by her side, Chihiro is convinced victory is inevitable. But Tatsuo isn’t at all like the hero Chihiro imagined. Foulmouthed, quick tempered, and a terrible drunk, Tatsuo completely turned her back on the samurai way and is now a ronin working for hire as a means of escaping the grief that haunts her. Forced to work together, the two are thrust on a treacherous journey filled with epic battles and twisted conspiracies as they must put aside their differences to save the village and face the demons of the past.
Liar's Test by Ambelin Kwaymullina Knopf Books for Young Readers
Bell Silverleaf is a liar. It’s how she’s survived. It’s how all Treesingers have survived, after they were invaded by the Risen and their gods. But now—thanks to some political maneuvering—Bell is in the Queen’s Test. She’s one of seven girls competing in deadly challenges to determine who rules for the next twenty-five years. If Bell wins, she’ll use the power to help her people and get her revenge on the Risen. But Bell doesn’t know how much she’s been lied to. She’s part of a conspiracy stretching back generations, and she’s facing much bigger dangers than the Queen’s Test. She’s up against the gods themselves. Getting hold of that crown might just be the least of her problems. Aboriginal writer Ambelin Kwaymullina has created a fast-paced, twisty narrative and an unforgettable heroine inspired by the strength and power of Aboriginal women.
In the Shallows by Tanya Byrne Godwin Books
Mara's ex, Nico, is the girl of her dreams: beautiful, wild and unpredictable. She's Mara's everything, even though Mara's never sure that she's Nico's anything. Then Nico goes missing ... New Year's Day: A girl is rescued from the sea. She knows she is called Nico, but other than that, she has no memory of why she was in the sea or what came before. When destiny reunites them, is this Mara and Nico's second chance? Can their relationship make it out of the shallows? And what will happen when they discover the truth behind Nico's accident? Because one day, Nico will remember everything.

Chapters: 1/? Fandom: Afterlove - Tanya Byrne Rating: General Audiences Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Poppy Morgan/Ashana Persaud, Esen and Dev Characters: Esen Budak, Isla Devlin, Ashana Persaud, Poppy Morgan, Deborah Archer Additional Tags: Sixth Form, AU, Fluff, sort of oneshots?, basically this is my random scenarios for the gang, this is an AU where they are ALIVE yay, Esen is my favourite book character ever in the world, also there's basically no fanfics in this fandom yet so here I am, I adore the original book, it is my life, tanya byrne Summary:
What I call a 'Beforelove' Afterlove AU, where absolutely no one has died, and everyone meets under completely normal circumstances at school.
AKA...
Ash and Poppy have finally started their A levels at a school they can attend together. In their tutor group, they meet some... Interesting other girls, and the four form an unlikely bond.
AKA character absolute shenanigans for a book I absolutely adore
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
SO GUYS I DID IT
I FINALLY GOT ROUND TO CONTRIBUTING FANFIC FOR THIS VERY QUIET MOSTLY NONEXISTENT FANDOM YAY
Essentially, as the summary says, it's my AU where the Reaper Gang And Poppy™️ all meet at sixth form instead of... Being dead or being close to dead, and I hope this becomes a running series of all my short almost oneshots of this squad's shenanigans
Their dynamic is gorgeous I adore it
Esen is my favourite character I warn you of possible Esen favouritism lmao
Anyway I'm super excited about this I absolutely ADORE this book and it's characters and it's author and story and everything so this is my homage to the great characters
Any support is much much greatly appreciated!

it's international lesbian day and since im ill and just sitting here reading, have some of my fav lesbian book recommendations!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
A Short History of Queer Women by Kirsty Loehr
Starting with a non-fiction one, this tells the stories of many lesbians and other sapphics from history and is really interesting and, at points, hilarious
Tumblr media
Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield
This is my current favourite book, I read it recently for a book club and just fell in love. It tells the story of Leah, a marine scientist who went on a deep sea mission that went horribly wrong and is now acting very strangely, and her wife Miri. It is a dual pov, with Miri's chapters following her trying to figure out what is happening to Leah post-mission return, and Leah's chapters following the events that happened on the mission itself. The strange supernatural body horror is part terrifying part intriguing and the love story is so tender and devoted, and the writing style is absolutely GORGEOUS.
Tumblr media
Afterlove by Tanya Byrne
In the similar realm of lesbian supernatural fiction, this is probably one of my all time favourite books. The first half is a sweet first-love romance between teenagers Ash and Poppy in Brighton, but when Ash dies on New Year's Eve and becomes a grim reaper, she can't forget what she and Poppy had, even if it means giving them only a few more days together.
Tumblr media
Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron
A lesbian retelling of Cinderella, this book follows Sophia, who grew up hearing the fairytale and is now about to be sent to the royal ball for choosing, where her life may be forfeit if she isn't chosen by a man. Sophia doesn't want to be chosen at all, and she fears the girl she loves will be chosen and they will have to part.
Tumblr media
She Gets The Girl by Rachael Lippincott and Alyson Derrick
I read this book while I was on holiday and loved it. It's a YA romcom which follows two perspectives:, Alex, a headstrong flirty lesbian who knows how to get girls but struggles to keep them, and Molly, who is very awkward and doesn't know how to go about talking to Cora, the girl she's completely in love with. When their paths cross at college, Alex begins helping Molly talk to Cora in an attempt to prove to her ex that she can be serious about romance, but as their plans progress, their feelings may have changed and they could be instead falling for each other.
Tumblr media
Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo
This is the book I'm currently reading but I'm putting it on here anyway because I love it already. Set in Chinatown in 1954, with Red-Scare paranoia and deportation looming over her father, seventeen year old Lily Hu risks everything once she meets Kathleen Miller and the two fall in love at a lesbian bar called the Telegraph Club
As a writer this is the stuff I aspire to be for someone cause as a reader I appreciate it so damn much.
I love when you find an author who just has a good flavor to their writing. It could be the way they handle characters, the way they use certain tropes or themes, even the specific lilt of their words. Its familiar and comforting and carries across different stories, like coming back to a place of comfort and recognizing the furniture.
My Esen Budak-inspired moodboard!
Tumblr media
Sooo I've been thinking about making these a bit of a running thing on here, obviously starting with Esen considering she's my favourite character
I had the best time making this lmao
I tried not to make it entirely goth, adding stuff like the bookshop and the music she played at Dev's party (if you look closely some of the CDs are like The Cure and Radiohead)
My Pinterest is now absolutely full of very emo things so thanks for that, Ess
