Learning to Smelt - 1
I've been wanting to talk about this for a while. Last year, I wanted to pick up smelting. It seemed fun, and felt right up my field in the realm of making things. I did all the research, got the equipment and earlier this year I finally managed to start! My goal is, once I'm comfortable enough to do it solo (since I had help from my insane uncle during my training adventure) to have it livestreamed and smelt things on request! Honestly at this point I reckon my skills have advanced to the point of almost competence (huzzah!) Nonetheless I want to post some stuff showing the process, just in case anyone's curious!
First off, I made an AGGREGIOUS error when it came to choosing the smelter brand. The one I bought didn't have a connector that worked with Australian Gas tanks, only US ones. I was very luck my uncle had a bunch of spare fittings/hoses lying around otherwise it would've been impossible to do anything from the start. Funnily enough too, despite it eventually getting to +1000 C temperatures, it didn't need that much fuel overall! Only had to slightly open the valves with one full rotation on the gas tank. I guess that's by design, since the whole idea is keep heat in (this just in, local hoplite PNGTuber discovers how heat works!) Also, fun fact! Don't buy a shitty $50 temperature gun that says it can get to 1000+ C and expect it to do so! So many infrared sensors are so pricey and there was no way in tartarus that I would use that kinda money on a glorified nerf gun but then it turns out the cheap one I got was incapable of reading anything beyond 400 C. Fortunately you can just eyeball it when it comes to smelting using this simple rule! If metal = solid: Wait If metal = liquid: Congratulations, you've done it!
Have to make sure it's done in a well-ventilated area too. Doubly so if you're melting brass since that garbage can burn and make zinc oxide which is NOT GOOD. First time I melted stuff was just done to make sure I knew what I was doing, not to cast anything. All I did was melt down brass and copper separately to make small ingots.
(btw if you ever plan to make casted finery, don't bother with a specific ingot mold, those things are pricey. Just get a cast iron muffin tray w/o the teflon on it or something similar. You can make a lot more that way and they're more likely to fit in the crucible if you want to re-melt). Also another piece of advice: DON'T OVERLOAD THE CRUCIBLE. My uncle wanted us to melt down all the copper we had (which was a lot, I had been going to town on the neighbourhoods wiring/plumbing in preparation for this) since "it was more energy efficient to smelt more instead of letting it cool down!" While technically true, a crucible full of copper is VERY HEAVY and picking that thing up with crucible tongs is gonna be a legendary struggle. We did end up spilling a bit, fortunately it didn't go anywhere. The vid attached to this post shows it: A crucible full of copper and regret for our lack of forethought. Following day I did try to cast one thing: My channel emblem as a medallion. I poured molten copper into an open sand mold and well, you be the judge:
Still, twas a good first go! Thanks to the ingot molder we used the cast metal in it's default form comes out in a style akin to that of a paperweight.
I'll be posting details on the second and third smelt soon, so stay tuned!

Mai Tai experience 2024
Adventures of 60 somethings on board a catamaran.
On the 31st of January 2024, we became the proud owners of a Lagoon 400 2010 model, located in Opua New Zealand.
On the 27th of February, after a few family engagements, we flew to Auckland and drove 3 hours to Opua Marina, gathering some simple supplies on the way. I felt so cold and exhausted when we arrived that I nearly cried at the thought of living on this small, damp and smelly boat for the next 5 years. What had we done, we had a perfectly good life in a house. Why why why?
The next day was better.
28th February 2024, we sorted out a few things and organized a few others. Where to put clothes, towels, and did we have enough. Sheets were on board, but I threw most out as they were thin and barley reuseable. I started a list of things to but for us and the boat to be comfortable and livable for the next…..years?
So first trip in our hire car to Whangarei, (Pronounced Foneray) we found Spotlight, Countdown, Kmart and Bunnings. We loaded up and drove the 1 hour back to Opua.
1st March 2024: Next day we though we would take her for a spin and charge batteries and empty the black water tank, (the wee and poo tank). So we got out to open water and came into the bay of Russell. Lovely little spot but the anchor wouldn’t go down, so I suggested David just drive around and Ill cook breakfast/brunch.
So we did that and headed back to the marina. On our approach, on an outgoing tide, she was hard to handle. The birth spot was big enough for a catamaran but not big enough for us to park in with our limited experience and a tide that wanted to push us where we did not want to go. So I am running around the deck shouting directions to David. More like, “STOP, YOUR GOING TO HIT THE WHARF”. More things like, “Oh what the FUCK, we are going to crash”. Came out of my mouth on several occasions. We had the neighbours, folk from boats near us, on the dock along with the harbor master Shane. He was speaking calmly to David about pulling back and not so heavy on the power, but I don’t think he could hear him over my screaming, “We are going to crash.”
Yes we hit the dock and crushed our port side sugar scoop with an indent of about 25cm long and 10cm deep. Not too much damage to the boat but our self esteem was shattered, and I was a nervous wreck. One of our neighbours from a boat named Scallywag, was on the dock to console us. He had just had a similar experience and the tide pushed him into the bow spirt of another boat punching a hole in the side of his 50 ft catamaran…..Ouch.
2nd March 2024: Olly the previous owner came by and he sorted out the windlass, (anchor) not working problem. He said he cleaned up some loose wiring and maybe some got lost in the process and he unplugged the windlass. Not sure but he got it going and answered a lot of David's questions. We told him about our encounter with the dock and he said, “You know what they say, “You haven’t been around if you haven’t run aground”. I’m not sure if that made me feel better but, there you have it.
3rd March 2024: We gathered up our torn confidence and broken dreams decided we had to get back on the horse….so to speak. So out we went for another attempt at having fun on our new boat. This time we dropped the anchor in Russell, and I just put the kettle on when the afternoon storm that was expected at 1pm came early and interrupted our 10am brunch. So up came the anchor and we headed back to the marina. Before we even arrived my stress levels were off the chart. But we listened to Shane and came in on a slack tide and we managed to berth Mai Tai without incident. This was cause for celebration, so we had a shower and went into Paihia for dinner and a bottle of wine.
8th March 2024: Flew back to Sydney for my 60th birthday cruise on board Celebrity Edge to …..of all places, New Zealand. During this cruise we saw parts of the South Island and the sounds that were absolutely breath taking. The enormity of these places that we could now explore in our own boat! So we decided to skip the Rally to Fiji this year and explore New Zealand for 12 months. Plus we are not experienced enough in operating our boat yet. We need time and some nautical miles before we conquer open water.

Just a few weeks before my mom passed away my 23+ year old female leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularis) Diego died too. Ever since I have been trying to figure out what to do with the enclosure that she left behind, and here are some of the ideas that I have come up with:
- Turn it back into the aquarium that it originally was; it could make for a rad freshwater species aquarium of zebra danios and beautiful blue freshwater shrimp, or it could be a second saltwater tank. Right now the thought of entering into another expensive-to-equip aquarium adventure makes me mentally hyperventilate though, especially when I still have yet to finish stocking my Fluval Evo reef tank which I've dubbed Purrling Reef. Sure the thought of a seahorse tank or an angler fish is fun but do I really want to enter into another aquatic pet like that at this time? Probably not!
- Get a small (male) snake! This is the original thing that I wanted to do but my mom wasn't on board with snakes. My dad? He's fine with it. So far the most likely species for me is the Plains Hognose (Heterodon nasicus,) Rosy Boa (Lichinura trivergata,) or the Anthill/Pygmy Python (Antaresia perthensis.) I am really not interested in Kenyan Sand Boas (Gongylophis colubrinus,) and I like that hognoses and rosy boas are both from North America - in fact the plains hognose is native to a few Canadian provinces! (Thankfully not mine though which means that hognoses are completely legal where I live, yay!) Rosy boas are unfortunately hard to find here, and so are pygmy pythons (which are from Australia, and not from the Perth region as their name seems to suggest.) Hognoses are easy to find - but only if you want a fancy colour morph, which I don't. I love the regular wild type morph of hognose but so far I haven't seen any available in Canada. (The fancy morphs are considerably more expensive, like $200+ more at least.)
Considering my hiking hobby a snake who as an adult only needs feeding once every 1-2 weeks and a clean, topped up water dish is pretty ideal. Top entry enclosures like mine aren't ideal for snakes (reaching down to grab them is too much like a bird of prey swooping down on top of them,) but I just need to check myself over how I reach for the snake friend. All three species of consideration are relatively docile, with the hognose being likely the best. Considering Clint's Reptiles and Wickens Wicked Reptiles' enclosure size recommendations I feel confident that Diego's 20 gallon long enclosure would be just fine especially for a male hognose (which is twice the size of the 10 gallon that some recommend.)
A garter snake would fit too however a larger enclosure would be better, especially so that I could keep more than one as unlike most other snakes, garter snakes are social beings who appreciate having garter snake friends.
Why specifically a male snake? Male snakes are significantly smaller than females.
I'm not interested in a tricolour hognose (Xenodon pulcher) as they do not live long enough. (5-8 years at best is ow, especially for an animal that would cost $400+ here. Nope, hard pass.)
- Get another lizard, but not a leopard gecko (nothing against my beautiful late Diego but I simply don't want another leopard gecko.) So far my favourite option for this is the completely gorgeous Schneider's Skink (Eumaces schneider.) At first I really wasn't considering another lizard but watching Reptiliatus' videos of feeding his tokay geckos made me realize that I actually really miss feeding Diego and watching her hunt her crickets. Skinks tend to be personable and friendly; I'm still researching what other options might exist.
Bonus points for ease of care for my dad whenever I'm away. He's probably more comfortable dumping a bunch of crickets into a lizard's home than feeding dead rodents to a snake if I am gone for a long time as I would be should I succeed someday in returning to Scotland to finish the Scottish National Trail (and potentially hike the Hebridean Way.)
- Stow away the 20 gallon and get a bigger enclosure for a larger reptillian friend. I'm not going to lie, a Ball Pythons (Python regius,) would be awesome and their particularly slow metabolism would be ideal for my thruhiking hobby (some adults only eat once every three weeks.) I also really like Pueblan Milksnakes (Lambropeltis triangulum campbelli,) and Arizona Mountain Kingsnakes (Lambropeltis pyromelana)! In fact, a Pueblan Milksnake is probably my dream snake - I'd feel happy every single time that I looked at that thing.
Alternatively I could adopt a tokay gecko (Gekko gecko) because they are not only beautiful but hilarious but since they are vocal geckos I'd probably have to keep it in my room.
Downside to an animal requiring a whole bigger enclosure: I'm not... financially well at the moment. This will change eventually, but right now? Right now things are hard.
But building an enclosure from scratch woukd also be really fun!
Wait, aren't fish really high maintenance? No, not really, not when you have automated systems in place like I do already and plan to add. An automatic feeder will eventually give my fish a daily breakfast meal of mixed pellets (currently a blend of Vitalis, Piscene Energetics, Fauna Marin and Northfin carnivore/clownfish diets,) an Automatic Top Off system guards my salinity against evaporation, my lighting is programmed with a full day/night cycle and an Inkbird temperature controller regulates the temperature of my water. My USB air pump will keep running and oxygenating my water for up to 36 hours in the event of a power outtage. All the coral species which I plan to keep are photosynthetic so they don't need to be fed actual food for their survival while I am away. My fish won't get any tasty frozen food when I am gone but they will have the pellets to munch on as well as the tiny live copepods which also call my reef home. For maintaining water chemistry I have extensive rockwork and porous media for biological filtration and I will soon be introducing macroalgae to one of my filter compartments. (Plants are the original filters and will - along with my future corals - lap up my nitrates and phosphates like greedy puppies.) Additionally, I have other plans for autominously maintaining other properties of my water and I will be purchasing a chiller before next summer (because fans suck at cooling aquarium water.)
If I do adopt another reptile I will be giving it UVB as well as a bioactive setup just like Diego had. Due to Keplar's very strong prey drive and my tendancy to deeply bond with my pets rodents are not on option for me as pets. I will be fortifying the terrarium similar to how I have fortified my reef tank against Keplar being a pest to my other animals.
I also have vague plans to build or buy some taller, better stands so that he can't go nose-to-nose with my non-feline pets anymore.
(Keplar is so cute but he is such a pest to non-feline organisms.)

They're really screwed the exhaust tip no the exhaust is awesome and the way that it's designed is awesome maybe put a seat back on the fender the fender is cool you need one in the front Nathaniel's way too small they made these changes that kind of ruined the bike you can incorporate some of them exhaust is awesome they make one like it it's a kerkr and it does look like this the factory can get them cheap and put them in and they would have a motor that's probably going to be like a 3 or 400 cc and some beginner bike. I really like the tire and I like his idea. Right here they didn't drop the seat but you could and you'd have us a higher up seat in the back and it would look real great and work awesome and the reason you can't do it here is because of the motor configuration but you can do it with a regular V-Twin and a 400 would be smaller maybe you would single cylinder and yeah it would be much easier it's a small bike that's the idea
Thor Freya
We're going to go ahead and try and make this and it is a prototype idea in the seat idea is great and the rear fender and having a single cylinder liquid cool and incorporating larger tires yet you'd be lower to the ground and it makes for a fast bike it's like a light cycle but bigger tires and he's seen them on a Harleys and stuff and they really actually move out and they do go fast
Posieden and Goddess Wife
we want to see these things in production and just never happens but this episode has to go by and we're waiting for it and people to see now
Olympus
We like this bike we like the concepts we like the design we know that it really works this bike will go fast the way he's designed it and the size is perfect the size of the engine's perfect we already have something like it is not true we are going to and we built something that was similar no we're talking about it I just didn't happen and we see looks like a primary design he saw or something that's true but no it didn't happen maybe the adventure bike is thinking of and the tank is too huge this great idea for a beginner bike with a bigger tank better seat rear suspension will be double shock the motor is a 400 is great and really the look is nice and hug her arms would be fun hug her Orange Street tires but really decent tires size tires it'll look like a performance bike and really it probably go fast
Mac daddy we do have a bike like this and we tested it and it goes real fast and with the 400cc it's like a Harley it's they don't make it 400 or 300 or anything like that the bike we made goes about 280 mph with the same design components even the seat and some people have done it and it's fast as hell and it's cuz the tires are high and big and the seats low it's pretty sharp kids our kid really kids

Is the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 Mileage Suitable for Long Road Trips?
The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 has been making waves in the motorcycle community with its classic aesthetics, robust performance, and reliability. However, a key consideration for potential buyers and road trip enthusiasts is whether the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 mileage is suitable for long road trips. Understanding the fuel efficiency of this motorcycle is crucial for planning extended journeys and budgeting for fuel expenses.
The Interceptor 650 mileage averages between 25 to 30 km/l under normal riding conditions. On highways, with consistent speeds and a steady throttle, some riders report achieving mileage close to 30 km/l. This is a respectable figure for a 650cc twin-cylinder motorcycle, considering its powerful 648cc engine that delivers 47 hp and 52 Nm of torque. The blend of power and efficiency makes the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 a solid candidate for long-distance travel.
The fuel tank, with its 13.7-liter capacity, provides a practical range that complements the Interceptor 650 mileage, making it possible to cover approximately 350 to 400 kilometers on a full tank under optimal conditions. This is sufficient for a day’s ride before requiring a refill, particularly on well-planned routes with fuel stops.
When planning long road trips, fuel efficiency isn't the only factor to consider. The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 boasts a comfortable riding posture, well-cushioned seats, and an ergonomically friendly handlebar position, all of which contribute to a pleasant long-distance experience.
However, the mileage can vary significantly based on riding style, terrain, and load. Aggressive acceleration, steep inclines, and carrying extra weight, such as luggage and a pillion, can reduce the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 mileage. Riders who prioritize efficient fuel use should maintain moderate speeds and adopt smooth throttle control.
The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 offers a reasonable blend of performance and fuel efficiency, making it suitable for long road trips. Its mileage, while not the highest in the motorcycle world, is balanced by the bike's overall comfort and engine capabilities. For those who appreciate a mix of style, power, and moderate fuel economy, the Interceptor 650 mileage supports extended adventures without excessive fuel stops, provided riders adopt sensible riding habits.

Silent Power: Best Inverter and Solar Generators for Camping Adventures
When you’re out in nature, the last thing you want is the noisy hum of a generator spoiling the serenity of your surroundings. Imagine setting up camp, surrounded by the sounds of rustling leaves and chirping birds, only to be interrupted by a loud machine. Thankfully, there’s a solution: quiet portable generators for camping. These generators allow you to enjoy your outdoor experience without the disruptive noise. In this article, we'll dive into the best inverter and solar generators that provide silent power for your camping adventures.
Why Choose an Inverter or Solar Generator?
When it comes to camping, choosing the right power source can make all the difference. Inverter and solar generators are designed to provide reliable energy while minimizing noise. Think of them as the gentle breeze on a summer evening, unlike the thunderous roar of traditional generators that can feel like a storm intruding on your peaceful retreat. These generators are compact, easy to transport, and environmentally friendly, making them ideal for outdoor adventures.
Benefits of Using Quiet Generators
Using a quiet portable generator for camping offers several advantages:
Minimal Noise: These generators operate quietly, allowing you to enjoy the sounds of nature without interruption.
Eco-Friendly Options: Solar generators produce clean energy, reducing your carbon footprint.
Versatility: They can power a variety of devices, from lights to small appliances, ensuring you have what you need for a comfortable camping experience.
What to Look for in a Quiet Portable Generator
When shopping for a quiet generator, keep these factors in mind:
Noise Level: Look for generators with noise levels below 60 dBA for optimal quietness.
Power Output: Determine the wattage needed for your devices, including phones, lights, and cooking equipment.
Weight and Portability: Choose a generator that is lightweight and easy to carry.
Fuel Efficiency: Consider how long the generator can run on a single tank or charge.
Top Inverter Generators for Camping
Here are some of the best inverter generators that will keep your camping experience peaceful and enjoyable.
1. Honda EU2200i
The Honda EU2200i is a top choice among campers for its reliability and quiet operation. With a noise level of about 48 dBA, it won’t disturb the natural ambiance around you. This generator provides 2,200 watts of peak power and can run for up to 8.1 hours on a single tank of gas. Its lightweight design makes it easy to transport, perfect for any camping trip.
2. Yamaha EF2200iS
The Yamaha EF2200iS is another excellent option, operating at a noise level of 57 dBA. This inverter generator delivers 2,200 watts of starting power and features a smart throttle that adjusts the engine speed based on the load, enhancing fuel efficiency. Its compact size and built-in handle make it incredibly portable, allowing you to take it anywhere.
3. WEN 56200i
For campers on a budget, the WEN 56200i is a fantastic choice. It operates at around 51 dBA and provides 2,000 watts of starting power. This generator is lightweight and easy to transport, making it ideal for weekend getaways.
