When Grey finally shows up to the hospital, Lucy had fallen asleep in the chair with the baby on her chest, still snoozing. Lucy is awoken by Grey gently poking her arm, and she lets out a groan at the stiffness of her neck as she opens her eyes.
“I see you’ve got things under control here,” Grey says, a smile on his face. Lucy chuckled.
“Yeah,” she said, sitting up slightly, being mindful of the sleeping infant on her chest. “Everything is going well.”
Grey nodded, looking at the baby. “Hows she doing?”
Lucy glanced down at her before answering. “Surprisingly, she’s perfectly healthy. She had a very minuscule amount of meth in her system, and the nurse said it’ll leave her system in the next 8-24 hours. Other than that, she’s perfectly healthy, and was most likely full term. Passed her APGAR test with a perfect 10.”
“That’s good,” Grey said, taking a seat in the chair across from Lucy. “Heard anything from DCFS?”
Lucy shook her head. “No, apparently they’re backed up quite a bit.”
Grey huffed slightly. “What else is new.” He shook his head. “Are you planning on staying here with her until someone shows up?”
Lucy nodded. “Yes, sir.” She took a deep breath, and then continued. “I’m also going to ask to take her in.”
Grey looked at her, a wrinkle in his brows. “You know it’s not your obligation to, right Chen?”
“I know.” Lucy responded with a smile. “I just feel very attached to her, and the thought of her going into a very broken system breaks my heart. I’ve been an emergency foster parent since I was 20, and have the means to provide and the room for her. I just want to know she’s safe, and I feel that the only way I will know that for sure is for me to take her in myself.” She finished. “A-as long as they let me, of course.”
Grey smiled warmly at her. “They’d be stupid not to.”
Lucy smiled, glancing down at the baby. “Thank you, sir.”
Grey nodded in response. “In that case, you will receive up to 12 weeks leave, 6 of which is paid. Now, you don’t have to take the whole thing, and you don’t have to take it all at once, that part is completely up to you. I know that you’re eager to finish your training.”
“I am eager to sir,” Lucy said. “But her being safe and cared for is more important. Will uh-“ she gulped. “Will Tim be okay with me taking that much time off though?”
“He’ll have no choice but to be okay with it. Besides, he’ll probably adore this little one.”
Lucy’s head snapped up at that. She completely forgot she would actually have to tell Tim about the baby, something she didn’t want to do. She didn’t want him to yell at her for making what he saw as a ‘stupid decision’ or to judge her in anyway.
“Actually, sir, I don’t want Tim to know.” She said. “I don’t want him to know why I’m taking some time off. I don’t want anyone other than you, Nolan, and Jackson to know. And the captain of course.” She explained. “Its not that I don’t want to show her off or anything, but I don’t want everyone getting attached in the event that DCFS finds next of kin or a permanent placement for her. And I’d rather my 6 weeks with her be calm, and as work free as possible.”
Grey raised a hand. “Completely understandable. I can just let everyone know that you are on extended leave, and will be back in a few months time. I legally cannot tell anyone why you’re off with out your consent.”
“Thank you sir.” Lucy said, just as the door opened, and a DCFS worker walked in. She came to a stop next to Grey, and smiled at Lucy.
“Hello, officer Chen.” She said. “I am Stacie Warner, from DCFS. I understand that you are the one that found the infant?”
Lucy nodded. “Yes ma’am, I am.” She answered. She watched as Stacie wrote something on her clipboard.
“Okay, perfect. I just need you to sign this paper signifying that you were indeed the one to find her.” She said, and passed the clipboard and pen to Lucy. Lucy lifted a hand from under the blanket, and signed off. Stacie took the clipboard and glanced at it briefly.
“Okay.” Stacie said, looking up at the infant and Lucy. “I spoke to the nurse, and she said that she will be discharged later tonight, so once that happens, I will take her with me to the office, and work on finding a placement for her.”
“About that,” Lucy said, sitting up straighter. “I am an emergency foster parent, and was wondering if it is possible for me to take her in?”
Stacie looked up, a little bit of shock on her face. “Oh yes, that’s right. I thought your name sounded familiar. I’m just going to call my supervisor and confirm, and get the paperwork started as soon as possible in order for you to take her home tonight. Do you have a car seat to transport her?”
“Uh, no-“ Lucy began but Grey cut her off.
“The station has some. I’ll have West bring you one.” Grey said, pulling out his phone.
“Perfect.” Stacie said. “I’ll be right back.” She then left the room, and pressed her phone to her ear.
“Okay,” Grey said, putting his phone away. “Jackson is going to bring you the carseat, and your car. He was actually wondering where you were, but I didn’t give anything away, just told him that you were here, needed a ride home, and an officer required an infant carseat.”
Lucy nodded. “Thank you, sir. I appreciate it.”
“Of course.”
Stacie walked back in a moment later. “Okay, Officer Chen, you are all set to foster her. Because she doesn’t have a name at the moment, you can either name her, or DCFS will make up a name for her on her birth certificate.”
Lucy looked down at the baby. “I’ll name her, if thats okay. Will she get my last name?”
Stacie nodded. “Yes. At least until we find her family, or she is adopted, either by you or another family.”
Lucy nodded. “Okay, thank you.”
“You’re welcome. Are you okay to fill out the birth certificate and discharge paperwork?” Stacie asked, and Lucy nodded.
“Yes I am.”
“Okay. Here is my card,” Stacie said, pulling out a business card with her phone number and email. “I will be the one in charge of her case, and if you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to call or email.”
“Okay, thank you so much.” Lucy said. Stacie nodded, said her goodbyes, and left the room.
“See?” Grey said with a smile. “Told you they’d say yes.”
Lucy just giggled, and looked back down at the sleeping infant.
“What are you going to name her?” Grey asked, and Lucy answered without looking up.
“Tamara.” She said. “It means the lotus flower in Indian, which represents purity and divinity.”
“Beautiful,” Grey said. “Any middle name ideas?”
“Oh, um.” Lucy said, looking up. “I’m not going to give her a middle name. In Asian culture, having no middle name is customary. I don’t have a middle name, so it feels wrong to give her one when I don’t, if that makes sense?”
Grey nodded. “Of course.” He stood up. “Well, if you need anything, just give me a call. I’m sure Jackson is on his way, and will be here soon. I’m going to head back to the station and get your leave paperwork started. Just stop by tomorrow at some point to sign it, okay?”
Lucy nodded. “Yes, sir. Will do.”
“Great.” He said, and headed out.
45 minutes later, Lucy had changed Tamara for the first time, and filled out her birth certificate and discharge paperwork. As she was handing the paperwork back to the nurse, Jackson came in the room with her duffle bag and an Graco SnugRide carseat in tow.
“Do you know wh-“ Jackson began to ask, but stopped when he saw Lucy being handed some formula and diapers from the nurse.
“You?” He said in shock. “You needed the carseat?”
Lucy nodded, a sheepish smile on her face. “Y-yeah. I found her earlier today, and am taking her in as a foster placement.”
“Oh wow.” Jackson said, putting the car seat down and peering into the bassinet where Tamara was fast asleep in her fluffy onesie that the hospital had provided for her. “She’s adorable.”
“Yeah,” Lucy smiled. “She is.”
“So I’m guessing we need to make a stop at Walmart on the way home?” He asked, and Lucy nodded.
“Yes, we really do. I don’t have anything for her other than what they gave me.”
Jackson nodded. “No problem. Has she been discharged?”
Lucy nodded. “Yeah, I can take her home right now.”
The next few minutes consisted of Jackson and Lucy buckling Tamara into the carseat, and gathering all their belongings up. Lucy darted into the bathroom and changed out of her uniform quickly, and before she knew it, Lucy was leaving the hospital, 7 pound 3 ounce baby in tow.
They made a quick stop at Walmart, and bought everything they needed for Tamara, at least for a little while. Lucy dropped Jackson off at his place, and Jackson wished her a goodnight, promising to come over after work tomorrow, and making her promise to call him if she needed anything.
Lucy glanced back at Tamara, who was sound asleep in her carseat.
“Well, baby girl,” She said, turning into the roadway. “Lets head home.”

Hey! Could I request a moodboard for an Ell (Eddsworld) kin who remembers being a werewolf, along with dating her 3 childhood friends?
I have had vivid memories of me dating Matilda, Tamara, and Tori. (All from eddsworld) With Tori being my main source of comfort?
You can do this only if you’re comfortable with it! I’ll have my respect if you’re not comfy with it, thx!

Creating Your Own History: Archival Themes in "The Watermelon Woman" [Part 3]
Continued from part 2
youtube
At the same time, the archivist treats the records dismissively, dumping a box of records on a table. As Alyx Vesey, founder of Feminist Music Geek, argues, the archivist appears to care little about the fragility of audiovisual materials even as she defends the lack of filing and indexing, saying that volunteers run the archives. [10] This may suggest that there is little interest in the materials and that the volunteers who work at the archives privilege material that they believe others will be interested in or that will be more heavily used. Although the archivist tells Cheryl about lesbian history in the 1930s and lets Cheryl look at the materials, she talks about the former in racially charged language.
Reprinted from The American Archivist Reviews Portal. Thanks to Rose and Stephanie for their editing of this article! It was also posted on my Wading Through the Cultural Stacks WordPress blog on Jul. 5, 2022. This review contains some spoilers for the film The Watermelon Woman.
Even worse, the archivist says the records are “confidential” and demands that Cheryl leave after Cheryl’s White female friend, Annie, films specific records; the archivist declares that researchers can’t do so in the so-called “safe space” without the consensus of the entire collective. Cheryl and her friend do not let these impediments stop them from subverting the archives itself. Cheryl predictably bucks these rules and her friend surreptitiously films what Cheryl needs before they leave. Furthermore, the film suggests that there is not a “right” way to archive materials, as Kostka argues in his post about postmodern relativism and archivists. [11]
The disorganization of the C.L.I.T. archives and the barriers Cheryl must overcome to access the materials demonstrate the power that archives hold over information. The archivist uses her power to select and control what records researchers can use; because of this, AfterEllen, a feminist pop culture site, called the archivist “humorless” and a “borderline fascist.” [12] The records on Black lesbians are excluded from the main collection of materials, resulting in those with privilege and power, particularly White individuals, comprising the primary cultural memory of the archives. This creates a “void in the collective memory” and contributes to archival silences. [13]
As archival scholar Rodney G. S. Carter has written, silences are often manifestations of those with power to deny “marginal access to archives,” which significantly harms efforts by marginalized people to form their own histories and social identities. [14] The Watermelon Woman asserts that archives can be challenged even though they are “spaces of power” haunted by silences. Although Cheryl is not physically denied entry into the archive, the archivist exerts power over her by enforcing institutional rules. She ensures that Cheryl, and her Black female friend Tamara, are marginalized within the C.L.I.T. archive, even though both are lesbians.
Archival erasure and fabrication are major themes in the film. For one, Cheryl makes a living off videos that either exclude or misrepresent those who share her identity, while she simultaneously exploits those videos to create counternarratives about Black women. She uses these films to supplant traditional images of Black women and articulates an alternate structure of Black lesbian relations grounded in “kin and multiracial queer community.” [15] The Watermelon Woman uniquely interrogates and exposes the scarcity of Black lesbians in film history, illuminating how queer people suffer historical erasure when they are made invisible in the present.

What (book(s)) are you reading right now?
i don't read !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
actually, i listened to the audiobook version of patty krawec's becoming kin: an indigenous call to unforgetting the past and reimagining our future recently. i think i finished it last week? i'm proud of myself because i "read" it for fun, lmao. i've been wanting to read jessica hernandez's fresh banana leaves: healing indigenous landscapes through indigenous science for a hot minute, so i might listen to it next ?? my goal, now that i've discovered audiobooks, is to get around to all of the brilliant ndn women thinkers i've missed out on. oh, and spare some weeks ago. loved that.
this week, for work stuff, i'm going to try to read adam rothman's slave country: american expansion and the origins of the deep south, thavolia glymph's out of the house of bondage: the transformation of the plantation household, and tamara walker's exquisite slaves: race, clothing, and status in colonial lima. light reading, obviously. i'm trying to finish my reading lists for colonial latin america and atlantic slavery and emancipation by next week, so i can move onto native america & the early republic for the rest of february through march. so :^) lots of reading, hopefully lots of writing.

4x17 Okay, that was a sweet and sad opener but police can't just call it. Right? They can't do the whole donor thing. You need a doctor to do that, surely? And even with an organ donor card, you still need to talk to the next of kin first, right? We Ah yes, the episode where Lucy is thoroughly retraumatised and gets no support from anyone aside from Tamara because story reasons, and where she should have dumped Chris' idiotic ass no question. All they would've had to do is a throwaway like by Nolan or Tim or anyone about Lucy doing trial prep today. Asking if they spoke to her or if they're seeing her later, how she seemed. Hell, one of them could have even offered to be there for her or meet her for lunch but then they got stuck at the hospital. S'all you have to do, writers. I'm not demanding feral!Tim finding out that Chris is a grade a fucking idiot, but just a mention. This is a big thing for her and they would know it. Also Chris should not be working on that case. He should've called Lucy the second Sarah called in sick and said they had to rearrange for another day, not waited for her to get there and then ask her if she wants to cancel. Or they could've gotten literally anyone else to trial prep with her. Wesley could've helped, right? Imagine if she'd had someone actually supportive taking her through this instead of Chris. He should have never been in a position to see that video or be on the case at all. Presumably he saw it all after he entered into a relationship with Lucy, and he should have told her. And if he saw it before then he definitely should have told her. Maybe humming it was an honest mistake, I get music stuck in my head all the time, but jesus man no. Just no. He apologises but then everything after that seems so blunt and insincere. "Well yeah, it's evidence." How about fucking grovelling for forgiveness, asshole? It's moments like this, Chris, that made us think you might be another bloody acolyte. I just don't like how he always smiles, even when he's meant to be upset or sorry about something.
Lucy, god, she just needs the biggest hug. She needs a Lucy hug for herself. Literally just a throwaway line from another character about hoping Lucy is okay or planning to be there with her but getting stuck at the hospital. That's all. You always tell us that everyone respects her and is there for her, so show us that too in moments like this.
Sidenote, they give up so easily when people flatline or 'die'. Also sidenote, zero sympathy for this couple. Love makes you do a lot of things, but also Meredith is selfish. Purely selfish. This wasn't her plan but she's going along with it. To let other people suffer because she doesn't want to die. I can understand wanting to do whatever it takes to protect the people you love, but doing the same to protect yourself? That I won't ever understand.
Oh, Lucy. Melissa is such a brilliant actress. Lucy is such a brilliant character. She's not perfect and that is perfect. I really wish they'd given her some kind of follow-up to this. Just a mention next episode or something. Anything beyond her going home/to dinner with Chris like he didn't completely fuck up beyond belief. I know they're showing that she's moving past it and she's strong enough to get through it now, but eh. They just wrapped it up way too neatly so they could also fit in a random kidnapping storyline? I know she's not the only character but you can't throw out breadcrumbs and expect us not to get hungry for something more substantial. I don't even need her support to come from Tim, but let's face it he would be there for her during this. Or he'd try to be. Just anyone else who isn't bloody Chris. Hell, have them all meet up at the end for the closer, Chris can be there too. Just someone asking Lucy if today went okay, if she's okay, and her saying she is or will be.
I have a lot of feelings and all of them are about Lucy and I'm not sorry whatsoever.

Fantastic question, I haven't thought of asking it, but it is really interesting topic
Myself, I read the first book in the summer camp by the sea, one of my roommates brought it from home. I was 12 or 14, i don't really remember. But I can recall how entertaining it was!! The book cover caught my attention from the first glance. I had rarely come across any childrens/young-adult book with an illustration like this - gloomy dark, with a skull and so on
I loved this book so much that i re-read it twice! In a week or less! The "cliffhanger" ending stayed in my mind for literal years. I neither was clever enough to figure out book piracy (i had no own money and couldn't ask my parents for buying me this series), nor could i forget Call or Tamara or Aaron (and especially Havoc) and their adventures
6 (SIX FUCKING YEARS) later i finally put my hands on the second book, and so on. I think that the reason for my obsession is that Iron Trial cliffhanger ending literally marinated in my mind for ⅓ of my life (not to mention that i love Call and his behaviour also kin him and i love Havoc he's the baby.. aaarhh) SO IT MARINATED. IT FUSED WITH MY MIND AND MY PERSONALITY. I COULD NOT STOP THINKING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED NEXT. For 6 years (or so)
When i finally finished the series for the frist time,, i burst in tears. I cried like i never had in my life before. Idk why, the book hit me but no this much?? I guess i was just tired. But this too made my connection with books stronger (we remember our emotions the most)
I loved the series so i bought it all!!! I was so happy to hold it physically at last. I re-read it twice in digital format and then three or five times in analog (idk paper???) format. Te-heee
Every time i read it, i get an enormous amount of inspiration and i draw more and more. No other fiction gave me that. I love this fandom because there are not so many people and i receive generous feedback which inspires me more
I listed a whole bunch of my other reasons to love these books, you may find this post in my blog by tag if you wish
how did you discover magisterium, and what made you obsessed?
It's honestly a miracle any of us are even here. I mean, how *did* you discover magisterium? It's a children's book series that ended in 2018 and unfortunately never got any mainstream attention. We laugh about our fandom being so small but I think we're lucky to be a part of it.
So anyway that intro came out way more poetic than expected. But now the question, how did you discover magisterium, and what made you obsessed?
As for me, my best friend gifted me the first two books for my 11th birthday. Not exactly sure why she chose those specific books when there's way bigger names in stores, but I'm fucking glad that she did.
I loved the iron trial right from the start, but what made me actually obsessed was the ending of the book. I remember being a fresh 11 year old and imagining how i would feel if i were call. Literal chills.
And what about you guys???????

Right! Time for another addition to the Stuart-Waddell’s home!
Tumblr media
It’s a bedroom! Very bare but hey. This is meant to be an inbetween spot for vampires so there is that. Let’s see. It’s been a bit since I checked in with Omar so what does he want? To eat popcorn. The popcorn he can not stomach anymore. ...on your head be it Omar! Let’s see, next whims are to create a drawing on the parenting board which...okay. I’ll take that as a leap off to learning parenting skill. And now all the vampires around here are getting thirsty. Including Harrison, who just got back from school.
Finally, I glance at the girls. Emille wishes to play with three toys for her aspiration and, well, now it’s a guessing game of which toy is it that she hasn’t played with yet. I managed to find one at least! Selena wishes to be alone at the moment so I would have her tell her sister to move away...and then it turns out they could be Best Friends Forever so let’s do so! That’ll top off that part of the aspiration! And then she can enjoy her alone time, reading a book while Emille heads off for the tv.
A good bit about parenting is bridging the gap between hated relationships so Omar is trying to mend his with his daughter Emille. And make food for them. ...I need to put clutter along the bathroom countertops in the basement because they keep wanting to cook down there! Done with that! ...it is only as Paris leaves that I realize that I could have the thirsty Roxana ask for permission to drink. Alas! And we also had some finickiness with the bed and monsters for Selena.
Next, I am just having Omar do some parenting interactions with Harrison, to gain that skill some more. Encouraging his cleanliness, having him mop puddles, and then influencing him to gain fitness. Tamara finally woke up and now I can actually see her skills. Not that it matters much, since I know what career she’s going to go into. Oh! And I thought to have Roxana take a picture of Tamara. I have some pictures of the family up on the wall and I figured it would be good to have one of her soon to be vampire kin.
With that it’s 5AM. Time for -
Neighborhood Watch!
Mio Blade-Gormotti in the Agnian Team household has died. Mio thought she could conquer a mountian but the mountian conquered her.
I can almost hear Noah screaming in anguish from here.
Houda Jaouad in the Jaouad household has died. Houda forgot her winter clothes and became a popsicle.
Oasis Springs: The Cardon household recently moved out.
Dang. I created this guy in order to check in on the new Calientes in a fresh file and I liked how he was generated so I stuck him in here. Goodbye and good luck, hot boy!

Also, in fate’s cruel irony: I get memories from someone’s fucking animation meme.
In other news, I guess I’m officially kin with Tamara! My memories involve only the future aspect, for now; I still wore the visor, experiments is what led to my monster form, and not only did the visor replace my vision, but ALSO was a way for the Red Army to control my monster form. Cause, uh.... I wasn’t very good at it.
(Also, while “Tamara” feels right, so does “Tom”, so I’m not sure if I was also NB then or maybe....genderfluid... Trans? IDK yet. Will keep ya’ll updated as the memories come by.)
(What I can confirm, is I did grow out my hair at some point. That feels right to me.)

Aesthetic for a genderfluid Tamara from Eddsworld who used to date Tori, but ended it because of hate, with themes of guns, knives, and lipstick.
