im seeing very little coverage (at least on here) about how moo dengs popularity on the internet is leading to her being harassed at the zoo as well as how the khao kheow open zoo has a history of multiple cases of animal abuse for sake of entertainment (tw for the last link specifically- its a video that begins with a few seconds of moo dengs image but shows a baby elephant being stabbed & swat with a stick by a keeper for ‘discipline’).

while im glad that moo deng IS bringing awareness & a new love for pigmy hippos (which have a dwindling suggested 2000-3000 number population in the wild), i think we should also take into account that not all zoos/animal sanctuaries take the best interests of the animals they are supposed to care for to heart- especially ones that put more of a focus on entertaining tourists than caring for their animals.

Skunks

A skunk had died on the road in front of my house when I was 15, it had been run over.

It was there for 2 or so weeks, and I saw it every day going to and from the bus stop.

Every day, it was less and less of what it used to be.

A tiny ball of black fur that you could smell a street away. The spray making you call out "Oh a skunk died!" As you drove by.

2 weeks.

And I saw it every day.

I saw the worms that formed in its belly.

Saw the vulture that picked from it.

Its bones were tiny, much smaller than ours. Of course, it was a skunk. A rodent. A creature so insignificant to us, even a nuisance to some, that we know its demise by smell and all we do is cheerfully declare its death and scrunch our nose in disgust just after.

Is that what I am?

Is that what they thought of me when I disappeared?

Did they hear of my attempt, and turn their nose up in disgust?

Did they cheerfully declare my death, and sigh in disappointment when I was confirmed to be alive still?

Were you happy when you no longer saw my face?

Could you see my bones as the time passed? Did you feel my absence? Did you see the worms that grew in my belly next to the Clonidine and water?

Did you know you were the vulture?

Or is all you remember the tiny stain of pink that was all that remained of my memory?

Do you shudder at my smell, at the faint remembrances of when I was around, causing you so much trouble that you had to bite at my throat and tear the sinew apart?

Am I bones or am I alive to you?

I am a skunk, not a rabbit. Not a wolf. I am a skunk. A creature to be declared a triumphant kill and to poked at with the stick long after my skin and fur has rotted.

I am the thing that you would know blind, in silence. And that you only hope goes away.

In the summer sun I am the odor that lingers for the memory of a desperate little rodent just trying to make it to other side.

I cannot be anything more.

I quite like skunks. They're just trying to live too.

this is Ukiaq, aka Uki, aka Little Miss Walrus. Ukiaq (whose name means 'autumn' in the Inupiaq language) is an orphaned Pacific walrus calf who was rescued by the Alaska Sea Life Center in July. she was found alone on beaches in Utqiagvik (Alaksa's most northern city), malnourished, dehydrated, and covered in small wounds. she was promptly rescued.

because of many circumstances, Uki can't be released to the wild. walruses are extremely social and need 24/7 care, meaning that two staff members have to be with her at all times, and she is too habituated to human care. there was also no way to reunite her with her walrus herd, as they had moved on and she needed 24/7 medical care.

the GOOD news is she got literally the best care possible. every single walrus-caring facility in the united states (all five of them!) sent staff to ASLC to assist in her medical care and hand-rearing. Uki has thrived, she is ADORABLE, and she is getting very appropriate care, as well as completely blowing up the ASLC's instagram. you want round baby animal pics go look at her and watch her playing in pools, blowing bubbles, and wearing playing with construction hats

Ukiaq has now been sent to her forever home. I'm very devastated that it's not at the zoo 45 minutes from my house, which was one of the options, and is instead the literally other end of the country, but her new home at SeaWorld Orlando is not only experienced in raising walrus calves, but has an experienced female cow who may become a surrogate mom to her, meaning she can start being less dependent on humans and learn walrus skills from an actual walrus!

SHE'S SO FUCKING CUTE GO LOOK AT HER AND THROW MONEY AT ASLC, THEY'RE THE ONLY PERMANENT WILDLIFE RESCUE CENTER FOR MARINE MAMMALS IN THE WHOLE ASS STATE AND THEY DID SUCH A GOOD JOB TAKING CARE OF HER!!!
