13 Moons Reading Challenge 2024
Here it is another post about books, yay! Two more moons (always late but what can I say, at least I'm still keeping up) of the reading challenge by @readnburied c:
Reading goal for now — Penumbral Lunar Eclipse: 13 books
Sturgeon Moon
A novella: Of Mice and Men (Uomini e Topi), by John Steinbeck. ☆☆☆☆ All right, I didn't know anything about the plot of this story. And I didn't even have any expectations, because judging only by the setting and atmosphere, I hardly like straightforward writing styles and low emphasis on the characters' thoughts, even if I recon that they're just typical of this particular scenery. But goddamn it. This was good. And I don't mean it was perfect, but the author conveyed exactly what he needed to say in the best way possible. I look at the ambience, at the characters, at the dialogues, at the plot twist at the end and how it was hinted from the start, I look at the finale and how it made me cry after only 100 pages I had met the characters, and I think hell yes, this all fits so well, this book definitely deserves its classic category. Heart-shattering, fast-paced and recommended, please read it, especially if you don't know anything about it either.
Harvest Moon
An anthology: Tales of Mystery (Racconti del Mistero), by E.A.Poe. ☆☆☆ This little anthology is so old I can't even find it on goodreads. It's part of a collection I found at a thrift store, but I think it's actually quite charming. My version, in italian, includes The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Mystery of Marie Rogêt, The Purloined Letter and The Gold-Bug. I was intrigued the most by the first story, but The Gold-Bug was also pretty interesting. I didn't enjoy particularly Marie Rogêt, but that's just because everything was so linear and without any plot twists. I have to admit, perhaps, that this story is probably the one where Poe's knowledge and witty pop up the most. In fact, the death of Marie does not come from his imagination, it really happened; Poe just renamed the woman and set it all in Paris, instead. Every source Dupin uses are words from real american newspapers, and Poe, using Dupin's voice, proceds to disprove every hypothesis made by the press on the case. It was fascinating to read, even if the tale doesn't really have a proper ending, or even if the american investigations chose other ways. Highlight for The Purloined Letter too, which wasn't that full of events, but it was so funny to read.

Do you ever watch a show or a movie or any piece of media meant for kids and just think about how the story or character or that one scene or whatever just spoke to your heart and soul, or just how profound it made you happy or break your heart. And just sit their thinking that this is for literal children, who probably still couldn't 100% understand the gravity of what they are consuming or probably couldn't articulate how they felt about it other than say they liked it or they dont, or it made them happy or sad, and you, a grown ass person is just thinking about how this thing meant for kids is just so simple yet complex with so many layers of emotions and plot and etc. That explores themes and subject better than media meant for your age, in a way that is simple yet incredible done.

A lil' gift to the best father figure boss :]
Originally, I wanted to make a lil' comic, but I just don't have the energy for it. So instead, I'll write what I wanted the comic to be about here.
Basically, I was reminded of a moment in the Lost Legends comic, where Soos hears sobbing and said how he recognized those sobs- which then showed that it was Stan sobbing.
The lil' comic I wanted to make was gonna be set maybe around a year into Soos working at the Mystery Shack. After it had closed for the day, Soos had gone home to eat dinner with Abuelita. After they're finished, she gives Soos a gift for him to give to Stan as a thank you for the fair amount of money he pays Soos for his work and for being there for her lil' Soos when his father just isn't.
When Soos arrives back at the Mystery Shack, it's ofc closed, so he just let's himself in with the keys Stan had given him not that long ago. He calls out to Stan when he doesn't see him in the gift shop, but gets no answers. Making his way through the building towards Stan's office, Soos hears the faint sound of sobbing coming from there. Knocking on the door to the office and calling out that it was just him, Soos gives Stan enough time to compose himself before he enters the office.
Stan cuts to the chase and asks why Soos is here when he saw him leave earlier after his shift was done, to which Soos presents him with the gift from him and Abuelita. Soos tells him about the reasoning behind the gift while Stan just stares at it in silent surprise before finally opening it and finding home baked cookies. Finally, Stan smiles and gives Soos a lil' thank you- and asks him to forward that thank you to Abuelita- for the gift, and it makes Soos smile in turn.

(minor 4.8 spoilers) so lemme get this straight...
there's a really badly-written detective novel in the house of daena (Reasoning Knows Not Time of Day, but Suspense Always Follows a Blizzard) with a bunch of strange marks in it. so it became famous as people think the marks were left by different scholars looking for secrets, or notations made by members of a secret organization, or an encryption cipher leading to hidden treasure...
but it was actually just borrowed by kaveh a month ago, who noticed that one of the character's names was printed incorrectly, and circled it while drunk.
unbeknownst to kaveh, alhaitham found the book in the study and noticed that the name kaveh circled was actually the real murderer. so to offset the spoiler for future readers, he circled another name as a red herring.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
kaveh then told tighnari about the book and how bad it was, which inspired tighnari to borrow and read it. tighnari also noticed that kaveh had unintentionally circled the name of the murderer, so tighnari circled three random names to add more red herrings. (+ bonus lore of cyrus being a menace)
at this point, rumors about the book already started to spread, which dehya heard about and decided to read it. she couldn't figure out what kind of puzzle the name circles were supposed to be, so she just drew a random circle for fun. but later dunyarzad heard about the book and was fascinated by the mysterious markings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
dehya felt guilty about interfering with other people's reading experiences of the novel, and you can find her giving a confession (of guilt) to candace at puspa café LMAO
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then you run into dori, sethos, and cyno at the palace of alcazarzaray. after dori and cyno play a guessing game about the circles in the book, cyno reveals that he'd borrowed the book earlier and circled every single name to help tighnari throw the trail off the spoiler.
so you finally return the book back to the house of daena (dori's loan period is almost up) and tell the full story to kaveh, who decides to buy the book, as it's been annotated to hell and back.
Tumblr media
the last part of the quest is just kaveh and alhaitham talking together
Tumblr media Tumblr media
tbh i would totally keep that book. it's practically a collector's edition at this point.
