S1E2

Adjusting to life in Bath, DCI McDonald and partner DS Dodds are called to the Mara Retreat, a private rehabilitation clinic, to investigate the mysterious death of a wealthy patient.

*The title of this segment puts one in mind of Richard Condon's novel, "An Infinity Of Mirrors", a best-seller in the 1960s which has never been filmed (although director Guy Green spent some time planning a version of it soon after its initial publication).

McDonald & Dodds (series 4)

I really appreciate how this show continues to evolve each season. From its uncomfortable, odd-couple beginnings, through its buddy-cop sort of evolution the show improves with every return. By this fourth series, the title partners are very comfortable with one another’s predilections.

But this series, outside of some nicely complex mysteries, also focuses much more on the McDonald half of the equation. Tala Gouveia is very much off-balance the entire sequence, until the very end. We have some sense of her stressors, but it’s a thread that doesn’t resolve for a long time. And, in a reversal of the formula, Jason Watkins is more her foil than the other way around.

The three 90 minute tales are nicely paced and full of twists and humor. Definitely on the lighter side of mystery, it still has enough meat on the bones to keep me coming back. Whether than can continue on from the current series ending in a way I’ll find interesting or not remains to be seen, but I’ll give them the opportunity to make it work.

*The title of this segment obviously puts one in mind of Edgar Allan Poe's famous short story, "The Fall Of The House Of Usher", which has been filmed many times, most notably by Roger Corman in 1960.
